Layne has the best “Yeahs” of anyone ever.
@The_vocalyst370 not today ISIS.
What about James Hettfield? Yeeeeahh!! 😂😂
I love "it ain't like that" 80% just for the YEAH's
Layne Staley is a generational talent. Tragic story, but one of the best vocalists of his time and even ever.
Also, I love when bands can sound even better in concert than their albums.
Layne's live vocals were so insane. You could understand every word of the lyrics and the other sounds took you where he wanted you to go. Taken way too soon.
❤❤❤
Jerry should look into Brendan Maier for a season. He’s the closest to Layne I’ve ever heard.
Way too soon but I was surprised he made it as long as he did. If there was ever a guy who was going to die young it was him.
Way too soon but I was surprised he made it as long as he did. If there was ever a guy who was going to die young it was him.
Insane that a band like this is criminally underrated and never got the recognition they fully deserved. No Grammy's, not in the rock Hof. My favorite band of the grunge era by far.
Amen! They were the first on the Grunge scene and the best, in my opinion. Between Layne’s vocals and Jerry’s guitar and harmonizing… sigh. So underrated. Would? is in my top 10 fave songs of all time.
Who gives a shit about Grammys. All those award shows are political and don’t represent real life. Get your shit together and stop worrying about shit that means nothing. As long as the music means something to you on a personal level that’s all that matters!!
@@JeremyD325 It's more about getting recognized for their work, especially the writing. When people visit the HOF, their story should be in there right beside the puppets from the i stay away video.
@@ChadH2023 Unserstandable, but what’s more important, getting recognized by the industry, or being appreciated by those who truly live, love, and breathe your music/art? If you are making music simply for money, fame, and other accolades then you are doing it for the wrong reasons.
@@JeremyD325 I would say getting appreciated considering how they have be overshadowed. More people aren't aware how great AIC is, this would help.
Layne was barely 23 years old here. I have no words.
This is when he was at his strongest. He would blow you out of the room! POWER!
One of the most emotive vocalists I've ever heard. He made you feel it down in your bones.
@The_vocalyst370 mo. Go away
Beautifully said…he absolutely did. I am a huge fan of Jerry Cantrell and his writing but the 2 times I saw Layne perform with Alice in Chains, I couldn’t take my eyes off of Layne. So much power. I was almost frozen in awe. Incredible talent, presence and delivery. It always amazes me to hear him sing Jerry’s words so passionately and full of so much emotion. Unparalleled talent…sorely missed. My favorite singer of all time. 🙏🏼
Lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell considers this song the masterpiece of their debut album, that his own guitar solo gives him chills, and that Layne’s vocals on it are amazing. A tormented encapsulation of the fraught relationship Layne had with a girl named Demri Parrott, truly the love of his life. They used drugs together, got addicted together, and her death in October 1996 was a blow he never recovered from. Yet even so, it was as he sang here, “I still love you, but I still burn.”
He didn’t even know demri when he wrote this song!!!
That’s not what I’ve read from multiple sources on his life. With Layne and Demri considered by most as soulmates, the lyrics and song are intense enough to fit that very deep connection.
@@brianbennett6690 He and Demri dated before AIC started, around 87 or so. I’m not sure when this song was written (it got released in 1991) but I’m pretty sure they knew each other.
The mighty Layne in his prime, God rest his soul. Thanks so much for checking out some more AiC and sharing your insights with us.
Same vocal coach taught Anne Wilson, Chris Cornell, Geoff Tate, Layne Staley and many Broadway singers and movie stars. “The Maestro” David Kyle
Why does everybody forget Warrel Dane when making that list....? R.I.P Wally I remember...
I always wondered about that.
@@randominc.2251I don't forget.
R.I.P. Mr. Kyle. Your work showed through all your students. Had to be one of the best in the industry.
I recall reading somewhere that Jerry Cantrell once said Layne’s voice was so powerful that they could hear him over their amped instruments without a mic.
I'm so glad you did this video. It's important that people understand that AIC is so much more than just the unplugged set.
@@themidnightchoir referring to reactors. They tend to do the unplugged or sometimes music videos.
@@themidnightchoir Most reactors who aren't familiar with the band tend to get pointed towards the unplugged set. Which was great, but not the best representation of the band's true sound. Pearl Jam has the same problem.
I got unexpectedly emotional watching this video. Something about watching the admiration light up this young lady’s face as she experienced this amazing performance from a long-gone era, much like my generation did decades ago.
I don’t know… Maybe it just hit me how old I’ve become.
Layne Staley is one of my favorite vocalists ever!
👌🤘🖤🤘
When William Duvall auditioned to replace Layne in Alice in Chains, he chose this song. Bold choice!
Jerry was doing a lot of unannounced shows in LA some time after Layne's passing, and William's previous band, Comes With The Fall, was often the opening act. (We're talking some shows with a few hundred people, if that.) So I'd heard William a fair amount, and when he was announced as the lead singer, I was skeptical. Bleed The Freak was the test for me. And not long after, I heard him do it, and nail it. (Man, I still look back fondly on that time.)
It would've been so nice to watch him get older, get clean, and have that cool middle aged mature voice. Almost like chris cornell or something. Rip to both. 😢
Layne was brilliant. Power, emotion, control, amazing sense of melody and harmony. Never be another. Please enjoy what he left us.
Bleed the Freak from that gig is also great.
Love how you move with him. Great reaction ❤
Pain makes beautiful art
I remember hearing AIC for the first time in 1992 on MTV. Layne's intensity gave me goosebumps, and my jaw was on the floor. I don't think anyone aside from Janis Joplin put as much raw emotion into singing as Layne did.
Yet another tormented singer that we have lost 💔
Layne and Chris Cornell were the vocal Beasts of this era.
This song is deep... The meaning will make you weep.
YES! FINALLY! More Alice in Chains, please. Bleed The Freak and Man In The Box should be next.
Even their their 19 80s glam stuff. AiC
At his peak, his voice was incomparable to anyone else. Funny thing is his voice was always the best
Layne is and I’m guessing will always be my favorite rock vocalist. He is in my top five for all genres. His emotional delivery is unrivaled and his dynamic rage is astounding.
There are many reasons I enjoy your videos. For one, many of the videos you analyze are songs by bands I love. This song is a perfect example. There is also your respect for the artists. And since I am not a trained musician or singer, listening to your analysis of the video is interesting as I gain insight into what is required to produce this music I love so much. But, the utter highlight is seeing you watch a video and truly feeling and becoming engrossed by the passion and emotion that some of these singers/artists put into their songs. Layne poured his heart and soul into his songs, his singing. And watching your facial expresses as you tune into those feeling, seeing your empathy is amazing. Why? Because I can empathize with you as I went through the same thing listening to Alice In Chains, Rush, Triumph, etc.... I especially love it when you are so engrossed that you lose yourself in the song and forget that you are supposed to be analyzing it. To me, that speaks volumes about how much the performance has captivated you. Keep up the AMAZING videos!
Such a powerful performance. Layne's vocals of course, but Cantrell's playing and solo are also fantastic.
The heavy metal roots of this famous 90's grunge band is apparent here. Spot on vocal analysis as always Bethany. 🎤
Welcome to greatness! The music industry got robbed of this vocal genius far too soon! RIP Layne.
Layne's voice will forever cut through the heart and soul of everyone who hears it, that's what makes him immortal.
So happy that you finally did this one. Love your reactions and analysis!
Love this one. Have all three albums (on both cassette and CD) and the Unplugged one too. The ending is pretty much the same on the studio version...but "Live" feels so much better when hearing. A couple of more great Layne songs (both by Mad Season) are: River of Deceit __ Wake Up. Studio versions or "live at the Moore"...either or.
Wake Up is one of my favorite Layne performances.
River Of Deceit plays regularly in my house, my truck, at work… such an amazing song.
@@SlitherWhisp Same here.
"Wake Up" - Mad Season
Live at the Moore….outstanding.
Rest In Power Layne🔥I hope you finally found peace brother. Missed beyond forever
Not only did you hear Layne's music ,you felt every word! One of the great's!!!
And there's the goosebumps ❤️
A little off topic, but Bethany’s natural beauty transcends her insightful analysis. Great song and video!
RIP Layne. You are missed.
Ooh, I had to watch this one! I can tell you before watching this is one of the most dominant displays of live vocal talent in rock you will ever see! Have fun
I can’t wait to watch your reaction to this ❤️
The greatest live performance caught on tape!! How in the world they are not in the hall of fame by now is just a musical injustice
Ah man always love seeing people reacting to this, laynes voice on the "I'm the only one, and dying to leave" absolute perfection
Just made my day with this one. ❤
Omg omg omg !! Have been waiting on this and a revisit to the unplugged album , thank you so much and keep em coming ! ♥️
Pure legend. Layne will be even more highly regarded in 100 years. Irreplaceable voice…
With how this next generation’s taste of music is, im afraid that most of these beautiful songs will be forgotten.
To see the difference between this and the unplugged session only 6 years later is truly sad. Its such a short time for the kind of pain and damage he endured. It's an absolute tragedy to have lost his unique talent at such a young age.
RIP to THE greatest vocalist of the 90's, hands down.
“This next song is about pain.” Well, that really narrows it down!
This is peak Layne! Love this performance, it optimizes Layne’s greatness
Great reaction Bethany. You were feeling this one. Layne had such a great voice and Alice in Chains as a group complimented each other very well.
Unreal performance.
It's not about technique or training with Layne......it's about passion. One of a kind vocalist, gone too soon.
Since I've found your channel I've been waiting for your reaction to this particular song/performance. Bums me out when people react to the Unplugged songs, especially as an introduction to the band, since Layne was nowhere near the level he was at during this show. Keep up the great work!

*Junkhead* by *Alice in Chains* LIVE is linked above. This is one of Layne's best archived performances.
This performance was on auto-play in every Guitar Center on the planet from 2000 on. Whenever I bought anything, there they were. Thats how important it is. Layne was so above the game.
one of the greatest songs
I can't explain how happy I am that you have finally done this video (I haven't even watched it yet, I came straight to comment). Out of every performance I have watched reactions to, this performance (Layne) is in my opinion the greatest live performance. My favorite reactor doing my favorite performance! Thank you so much, you just made my day!
btw, love that you're embracing the grey hair! it's an attractive power move IMO
this man was one of if not the best singer the world has ever seen no one can come close to matching it fucking legend
"ooo golly" lol you are exactly right
One of the best and most original vocalists ever.
Dope choice. Subbed. More!
Yes! I recommended this and I know you’re going to love it! Can’t wait to watch it
Excellent performance, my personal favorite.
Layne at his very best in my opinion!
And the feeling of calmness during the storm is exactly the mood I was searching for today, it upset the day Kirk Cobain died, I cried the day Lane died! R.I.P.
It was upsetting. I also felt awful when Dimebag was murdered. That lunatic shot several people that night. He wasn’t supposed to have access to a gun his stupid mother knew he was nuts and bought him a weapon as a gift.
Cried the day Layne died, but can’t spell his name correctly?!
Same with Kurt?!
I hate fake people
@@cfhfan2000 yeah damn autocorrect I seen it soon as I posted it, but thanks for pointing it out much appreciated, and don't hate anything, just don't give a damn what you think especially what you hate but if you going to hate on someone it might as well be me saves someone the misfortune of listening to your shit so throw it on hero. You're sure not bothering me, you probably wasn't even born yet poser. Did you ever see them live? Either of them? Loser.
I don't know if its true, but I've heard it said that Layne Staley had a wider range than Mariah Carey, because he was able to hit quite low notes as well as his signature high ones.
I haven't listened to a lot of Alice In Chains but every time I do I'm always impressed with how good they are! This performance is no different! This song showed off how great Layne Staley's vocals are! Your analysis helps to appreciate them even more! Oh, and your t-shirt is really cool too!
Layne easily draws you into his world and plucks at every soul-string on your body…..sometimes his rips them right out. His talent was far beyond what he was given credit for at that time. It makes me happy that ppl are still learning about him & his craft and are appreciating him in the manner that he deserves. He could swoon you with his gentleness and the next word, blow your doors off with his powerful, gritty delivery. @13:20 how he pushes put the yea-ah…even quivering at the end & puts his head down, you know THAT was his heart singing. Layne was in a class of his own.
Jerry matches this with his sludgy riffs. He is a master at making that guitar ‘sing’. Sean & Mike perfectly round it all out. They were a young, but brilliant, group of talented fellas. Most definitely an Iconic band!!!
Prime Layne. This was very true to the album. They sounded that good.
Layne is Legend !!!!
Layne!!! Love
It's very close to the studio recording, I'm glad you reacted to it.
This is by far my favourite performance of Love, Hate, Love.
Great reaction, thank you. I always thought that the last bit was just Layne showing off, lol. An incredible singer with an incredible band.
Jerry Cantrell brought a lot to this band. The glue of the band!
One of the greatest to ever do it. RIP Layne 😭
Layne really was amazing with what he could do
Thank you for doing this. This is a good "alternative" to the subtle beauty/vocal harmonies of Down In A Hole (MTV UP), where it showcases Layne's unbelievable power when he was at his best. I always thought this reminded me of a 4 min song version of Romeo & Juliet : tragic love expressed by seminal artists : Shakespeare with his poetry, Layne with his voice.
That brings back so much, I remember 12-13 years old going everywhere with my walkman jamming to Alice in chains albums over and over again all the time, getting in trouble in school jamming out to this wow I forgot all about that, old guns and roses, Megadeth, Ozzy damn I remember all over again what made me so passionate about music in the first place. Thanks Vocalist you done it again I really needed that bit if inspiration today much appreciated, funny the unexpected places like can take you to find serenity isn't it lol. Hope everyone has a wonderful day, something about is calmness with his intensity that always inspired me it's like calm during the storm or something, whatever it was he was the master of it.
R.i.p😭 LS,,, We miss you brother. R.I.P Mike✌️
“This next song is about pain” aka every single Alice In Chains song.
"Layne's voice was so powerful that I could hear his voice coming out from his body. Like, out of his chest"... Barrett Martin sobre Layne ❤
please do bleed the freak next !! especially live at the Moore Theatre Seattle, WA - December 1990
Layne Staley, dude had some pipes!!!!
Layne! OMG! What a SINGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another vídeo that makes me cry!
Man this is the one I’ve been waiting for 🔥
Some Layne before he was a walking corpse
“I can’t remember” and “man in the box” are other great listens from this concert
Another thing this song shows about Layne is his love for YEAHs in his songs. I like to think that all the YEAHs are the rock versoin of scat.
I saw them a few times before his death. He was insanely clear and consistent. We lost a legend too soon.
Layne was an incredible vocalist. His tone is very powerful but he could be so delicate while harmonizing with Jerry Cantrell. You should check out Mike Patton from Faith No More- Ashes to Ashes is a great song to see his range.
YASSSSS, THANK YOU @TheVocalyst !!! PLEASE, PLEASE DO "BLEED THE FREAK" FROM THE SAME SHOW/NIGHT (The Moore in Seattle) ❤❤❤
“Sinister” Good word. I think that’s what he was going for. Great reaction
Loving your channel, hearing the technical side of singing/vocals is very interesting. Also watching you listen to music in a completely different way than we do is very cool.
I am wondering if after hearing a song, do you read up on any of the singers past or current history. Many of the singers you listen to have very sorted pasts or their current life (or no life). Some of the most powerful well rounded singers have had bad upbringing or have taken their own lives. It gives a different look on their ability to communicate emotion with the pain they are going through.
I'm so happy that there are still people who listen to real music, layne right here was at his best. Live at the moore is the greatest vocal recording because the audio quality is very good. But in my opinion live at dallas 1990 was the one where layne was at his vocal peak. The audio quality is shit but if you just concentrate on his vocals you will realize that he was other worldly. Layne Staley forever ❤
I actually had this on VHS makes me feel OLD! 😭😭
I saw your channel did this and knew it would be fun. Love your in depth. Thanks.
First! Love your channel! ❤
Awesome analysis!
I stumbled across your channel and I got to say....l love it. I love how you break it down. Rock on girl rock on
