  • Diagnosing and Replacing the Track Bar on my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport 4x4 with the 5.9l V8
    A loud "clunking" sound on the passenger side, followed by a harrowing "death wobble" experience on the freeway in a construction zone which turned into a thumping under my feet on the drivers side when hitting bumps etc. Diagnosed to be an EXTREMELY loose track bar!

    Track Bar (DS1413) - amzn.to/2YI1OR8
    Tools needed for this job:
    1/2" Ratchet Wrench - amzn.to/2QhEhDx
    1/2" Drive Socket Set (with 22 & 18mm) - amzn.to/2VBelDP
    Tuning Fork - amzn.to/2JU9oE4
    3 lbs Baby Sledgehammer - amzn.to/2M04cRJ
    Pry Bar Set (I didn't need this but you might) - amzn.to/2VHf9ar

      My death wobble was WAY worse than I made it sound in the video. I crossed 2 lanes on traffic and almost hit the right cement barrier! 😱 Cars scattered and I was very lucky none were right next to me when it started. Very scary!

    I'm doing my track bar now have a 97 Dodge Ram four-wheel drive you don't need alignment you can adjust your steering wheel by your drag link adjuster tube it's the one next to the steering dampener the shock absorber you just want to loosen the safety Rod then slide it out of the way loosen the two clamp bolts by spinning it it will just your pitman arm that moves your steering wheel best to have someone in the vehicle to tell you the direction the steering wheel is moving good luck thanks for the video

    Yeah very helpful. Unfortunately I was to late. Gave me the death wobble and when I looked the driver side end of the track bar was in two. Yeah luckily I was a quarter mile from my home when it happened.

      Mine made that clunking for over a year before I figured it out. This solved it for many years. I just sold that truck a few months ago and it had 306k miles. I miss it but LOVE my Ram Rebel! I owned the 99 for over 16 years. 😱

    That’s so crazy, I have an 01 ram with this same problem I’m also from Utah 😂 so I know the salt on the roads problem, I think I know which airport you were talking about I always hear the planes from my base

      I’m in Salt Lake county out near “airport #2”. We moved a little further south about a year ago so we don’t get the direct fly overs near as often now.

    Hi there. Iv got a 95 165k miles. Runs great. Wheel has play and is crooked and then there’s the play when in the highway probably a inch or two kind of like driving a boat lol. Im thinking about doing the track bar first and as iv heard that the main culprit for the loose steering. Im guessing a lot of the front ball joints need replacement and as you know there are allot. You think doing the track bar only first is wise and worth a shot ?

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  Рік тому +1

      I’d also bet your steering gearbox is a major part of it. Have someone turn the steering wheel while you watch from below (carefully so you get squashed of course). You should be able to see if the ball joints or track bar is loose. If the wheel has 2-3 inches of play before you see any movement from below then it’s the gearbox.

    The wheel has nothing to do with alignment. That is cuz u move axel while track bar was out

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  2 роки тому +1

      Correct, I think I was just saying I wanted to keep the wheel straight to get it aligned (going from my crappy memory though). You should always get an alignment after working on suspension parts.
