I just did my rear brakes on my 97 dodge ram 1500. This video was exactly what I needed to do the job! Everything about this video including the person doing it was very clear as to how it's done!!! Thank you so much! Couldn't have done it without this video!!!!!!!!
My additional tips is pay attention to the direction of the gear adjuster and the spring in front of it will affect the fitment of it. What they also failed to mention is that you need to first back off your brakes by using a screwdriver to lift up the tab and then turn the gear with another one or you’ll never get your drum off to start with. Also go ahead and buy another cylinder because 9 times out of 10 you’ll need one. Make sure to clean off the two cylinder pins really good with a wire brush to prevent dirt from entering the brake cylinder.
Thanks you for this video. I was almost to the point of panic when assembling my rear brakes. The video helped me a lot . The shop manual was not detailed enough. The last time I had done rear brakes was when I was in my twenties.
Q: I noticed your doing the driver side in the video. At the 28:05 mark you talk about the horizontal part with the spring on it and you mention the spring goes to the rear of vehicle. On my truck on the passenger side my spring is toward the front of the truck. Do I have the wrong piece on the passenger side, or is it supposed to be facing the front on the passenger side? My first time on drumm brakes. I have 94 dodge 1500 4×4. Anyone who know I would appreciate input. Thanks for the awesome detailed video!

Excellent video! My son and I just did his brakes last night and wished we could've watched your video first! Thank you, Sir. I'm gonna go back and relook at some things and make sure that we got them right.
For anyone watching, the left side at 22:22 should also have a spring retainer the same that you'll find at 24:22. It should also come in the kit. As you can see in the video, it was left out. It might not be necessary considering my old brakes didn't seem to have them installed either. I would consider installing them because it will help center the spring.
hello, I wanted to get some clarification before I did any adjusting. I replaced everything in the video, a long with the wheel cylinder, all the brake lines going to the rear. my question is should I adjust the brakes like in the video now? or wait until I bleed the lines? I'm doing all the lines in the front as well so I won't be bleeding everything until the very end. I wasn't sure if the lack of pressure will have any effect on the adjustment it's going to need. as of now the wheel spins freely like it needs adjusting but again, zero fluid and pressure going to the lines. appreciate any help!
Great video, doing my 99 and I took lots of photos, I neglected to take several overall shots and when I went back to see how it all went together I was stumped. Got me out of a bind in a big way. Did get tripped up a little moving over the the other side as the assembly is inverse in view and the flow of assembly is front to rear. Make sure you have yourself a great day 👍👊
Great explaining. Very clear and thorough without any chatter. And the video was very well lit and showed everything really well. Good zooming in closeups on details
Very helpful. Now I can put my brakes bact together. Wheel cylinder blew out 3 days ago and i took apart but had a few things that didnt fit. After watching this video i know exactly where everything goes without getting aggravated.
Wouldn't it have been easier to spend the $11 to buy a new hardware kit than to try and clean the old up? The pins looked a little too rusty and typically when they get so rusty they tend to get real weak.
There's only ONE caution that you forgot to share: If you DON'T "adjust" the star wheel, (thinking it will adjust itself), then your wheel cylinder will explode thereby ruining your nice new brakes AND the cylinder. I've already ruined 2 cylinders and my new brake shoes and now I get to buy some more.
The bar with the spring @ 9:00 and 28:00. My spring is broken and I’m having a really hard time trying to find the part number or name of it online. Any suggestions?
I have been attempting to switch out the drum a and breaks on my 1996 dodge Ram 1500 and it took an arm and a leg to get the springs on them I saw the top and bottom hook piece and it’s facing the opposite direction :/. Where am I going wrong?
I think I removed the spring for my emergency brake and am not sure how I put it back together. I'll try to reference the other side if the truck to see how it goes back together
Very well done video, but! When working on the other side of the vehicle, the ratcheting to loosen the adjuster is the opposite of what is shown here. Also, I have a 2001 Ram 1500 and it has a lot more parts, especially the way the E-brake shoe is attached. My E-brake is attached with a cable that runs from the shoe guide at the top, through a pivot down to another kind of complicated spring in a cage that attaches to the adjuster lever. What a mess!
I believe you doing the driver side. But on my passenger side my brakes are different. I'm concerned about it. The part the goes inside with the little spring is backwards.
@@adriananoelle4699 No kidding! I'm only watching to make sure I put the little shit back on correctly! And damn it!!! Nothing is the same! Except they are break shoes!!!
Good idea to put lug nuts on a few threads before you hammer on drum so you protect lug bolt threads while hammering. Clean around axle stub that contacts drum. Lube it too. A punch and hammer works good to release drum. Punch drum between lug studs. Simple n works. spray brake cleaner n clean rag before installing drum you have grease on shoes. GREAT VIDEO BRO, THANK YOU.

I did my rear brakes last week and used copper anti seize thread lubricant on the baking plate and adjuster. Is that going to be sufficient for the backing plate where the shoes move on it? Also, do you have a video on control arm replacement for a 1995 Ram 1500?
+Henry Enriquez Thaks for checking us out! We do not currently offer the brake spring tool used in this video. Please let us know if you have any further questions, thank you!
I replaced everything on drum breaks and new calipers and breaks on front. I've bled the breaks 3 different times and still have a soft peddle and the back left break grabs way before the rest do. Emergency break isn't to tight so I'm out of ideas. Back left break about 235 degrees and the rest about 115 degrees after a short drive. What am I missing?
Replace drums and shoes on my 98 ram 1500 2wd, now I have ABS and brake warning lights lit on the speedo panel, any mechanics out there want to help with info?
No brake clean and snap torquing the lugs... use brake clean to clean off the oil that comes on all brakes to keep from rusting on the shelf or in transit. May not look like it but it’s always good to do. Snap torquing is never good either.
Are you drums inspected for perfect rounding? Just installed new shoes and drums. I’m getting a vibration at the pedal and never had this before installing
At a cost of approx $17 or less per side you should be recommending replacement of all springs, clips and adjusting wheels. If you're going to spend the money to replace drums and shoes why on earth put them rusty critical pieces back in. Not to mention the time to clean up and put back in inferior parts is not smart. Especially for you braking system.
