Perfect video, straight to the point, thorough walk through of every single setting, tools and links to purchase. Best EVA Cricut video out there. Thank you so much.
OMG I've been looking for something like this since I knew I was getting a Cricut.
You're welcome! Please be sure to subscribe to get more episodes as I release them :). Congratulations on your new awesome Cricut!! Woo!
Been waiting for this....highly suggest that you do a session on the "must have" accessories and how they work/use them.
That's a fantastic idea!!
Just bought a cricut maker for making eva costumes.. Thank you for this ...
Thank you. Thanks especially for putting the settings on the final video screen. Very thoughtful and helpful.
I've been looking forward to this for a while! 😀 Easyer details I can do while to tried to cut foam by hand? Yes please!
DeathBright AWESOME! It’s definitely saved me a ton of time and hard work!
I've been so excited to watch this! (since i saw your Q&A with Punished Props! -shout out to the PropTarts!) I look forward for more Cricut for Cosplay!
shereallean Woo hoo! I hope this video helps ya with your own projects! Also- Bill & Britt & Paige & the PropTarts ROCK! 🤘🤘🤘
I just ordered a cricut maker and it’s coming in the mail today! So excited! Thanks for your tips!
that's awesome! I am so excited for you!!!
Just picked up my cricut and I have to say, my Hylian Shield by hand took me over 2 weeks. This would have made it less than a week.
Can't wait to get started!
Thank you for posting this! Your videos have sparked inspiration!
We just got a Cricut Maker and I've been searching for useful videos which go beyond the everyday, crafty crap. Too many of the videos out there are focused solely on making stickers and "Home Sweet Home" plaques with Tarolo (or Babette) Font inscriptions.
SUBSCRIBED!
I hear ya! I have used my machine for SO many cool applications beyond paper crafts. It’s so fun to experiment with materials and accessories to achieve those “pro shop” looks on a crafter budget! :)
Fantastic thank you for sharing.. new friend yay😊
So glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the vid! I have subscribed and will be purchasing for my EVA foam builds :)
Excellent, though 2mm is so thin! When I think of eva foam, it's the rigidity of the thicker foam that draws me to it. But still, it's good to know the limitations of Cricut. No silver bullet.
Your videos are both adorable and informative hehe
Aww thank you!!!
That was awesome!! 😍
Midnight Crafter16 I’m so glad you enjoyed it! ☺️
Have you tried any thicker foams? Like 3mm or 5mm?
Yeeees! I just got an air 2 and was elated when you mentioned the modified settings for using it instead of the maker. Thank you so much for this video!
One question I had, is what purpose does the vinyl serve? Is it to act as a transfer medium of sorts?
Hillary Kuemmerlin you’re very welcome! The vinyl set upside down on the mat helps anchor the foam down, which is especially helpful with those tiny details.
Such a fantast vid. Easy to follow full walk through but still short and to the point. Thank you.
May i ask what hitting it with the heat gun does?
Glad you enjoyed it! The heat gun seals the Eva foam, so if you’ve scored the surface the scored lines will become very visible as the surface pores close when exposed to the high heat.
This is so useful! Thank you for making this video! I was wondering have you tried 3mm high density eva foam with this machine? I really want to get this for crafting but was on the fence since I'm not sure how well it worked. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! And OMG: I saw the Hawkgirl helmet in the back. Did you make it? From EVA foam? Looks so awsome!
Thank you! Yes, that was a commission piece for a friend. Even though I have the mold, I don't have the heart to tear off the master just yet :)
How thick of eva can u cut?
Very late to this video, but how thick of EVA foam can the cricut handle?
@@chaysebates2907 I don’t recommend anything other than 2mm and thinner for that machine.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, I've been all day long fighting for cutting foam, the vinyl technique really is a game changer. What did you use for the heating gun? I love the video.
That's great to hear! I used a variable temp heat gun but any kind of heat gun would work well! Cheers!
Thank you so much for the tutorial! This is super helpful. May I ask what does the vinyl do underneath the 2mm foam?
Devyn Coleman Ah yes, I wish I had made that a little more clear- the vinyl provides a better adhesion to the mat!
that Sims music thooo
!
I had a question! How often do you have to change the blade? Do you buy the third party deep blades in bulk? Or do you buy the official circuit ones? Thanks! I just got my cricut maker 3 today, and I'm so excited!
I’d recommend always buying Cricut brand blades to ensure you don’t damage your machine. I will change the blade when it starts to struggle making crisp cuts, which can vary for each kind of material you’re using. Congratulations on the new machine!
Great tutorial! Question-had you already created the shield's details in some kind of drawing programme?
Yes, I had my original hand drawn pattern that I then traced in illustrator to create an .svg file to use with the Cricut.
So I iust found your channel today and then a little while later came across your etsy store by accident! I'm going to buy the sheild pattern and have a go at it but do you think you would ever do a tutorial or step-by-step on it's construction?
Oh gosh, just seeing your message now! If you need help with anything send me a message over on insta or fb! :)
Does the explorer can cut 5mm or more?
Im wondering the same thing as well. However, looking at the design of the machine, Id say most likely not. And for a bigger template, that probably wont do too.
Any advantage of the deep point blade over the knife blade?
Absolutely! The deep blade settings can be modified easily. Not so with the knife blade.
Is there a reason of why to put the vinyl down, rather than just sticking the foam to the mat? I bought some vinyl and am just curious
The vinyl offers more adhesive strength without damaging your mat. Another method that I have been using recently is using blue painter's tape instead of the vinyl. It can be added to the entire piece of foam first, and then you place it on the mat, do your cut, and then remove the tape from the foam. This can be a little less expensive that using the vinyl.
@@DownenCreativeStudios I see, thank you! And thanks for saving me a TON of time playing around with settings
Any settings for wonderflex and cricut air2?
Hi Amanda! I haven't yet tried to cut Wonderflex with the cricut, but I would imagine it would be with the same settings I cover in my other episode about cutting Worbla. With the added mesh fibers, you might need to add more cut passes by pressing the "C" button at the end of each cut until you are happy with the results. :)
I can't find a deep cut blade for the maker every time I search one on Amazon it's for the explorer even the link in this video is for the explorer
Could i apply these same principles to a cameo?
I believe so! But I haven’t tested it myself.
I'm assuming you did a cut pass and then a scoring pass for your shield components. Looking to get a Cricut next year to make scales.....
Unfortunately at this time it's not possible to cut and score in the same pass. I manually scored the pieces after cutting.
Can it cut thicker foam like 5mm and 10mm?
Can it cut 6mm foam? It’s for my stormtrooper cosplay
Unfortunately 6mm is to thick. I believe the thickest is 2-3mm.
the premium removable vinyl. Is that any of them or is there a particular one you use for putting the foam on?
Any removable vinyl should work. I have only used the Cricut brand but it's a good bet that others would do a similar job. :)
I don't own one yet but is there a way to set up the project to do a score and then cut pass on the same piece that way you don't have to worry about realigning the mat for a second pass to do your final cut?
At the moment you can only use one blade at a time, so unfortunately it would be very difficult to do both. What you could do is draw the outline with the pen tool, and then use the blade to score your details. This can happen in the same session. :)
Will the Cricut Maker cut 1mm and 2mm foam that comes with it's own adhesive backing?
Yes, although I would do several tests on scrap before cutting into your final materials.
What settings would I use it I want to score 5mm hd foam?
Hi Beverly, hope you are doing fine!! I already posted sometime that maker is on my shop list. I am going to NYCC and probably will be my chance to buy it!! I would like to understand how many acessories I should buy. I understand that Knife blade will be one, but since we know foam consumes lots of blades, how this will work for cricut, I will need to buy lots of them? :-(. also I checked that it will only cut 2mm foam. is it able to cut something as 6mm? I heard it also cuts leather. thanks in advance for any tip you can give !! :-)
Hello! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you! If you haven't already purchased the knife blade, you'll need ONE housing, and a few spare blades. In my experience, the blade doesn't need to be replaced super often, but once you start to notice the cuts aren't super clean, it might be time to replace them. I usually try to grab blades when I can, so I'm not stuck searching for them when I need them urgently. The max size to cut is 2mm materials. Yes, it can cut leather too!
If there a difference other than time ti takes to cut with the Explore Air vs Explore Air 2?
I haven't used the Explore Air, but I would imagine that the newer model would be faster all-around.
Can the critic maker cut through .093 in. Acrylic Sheet ?
ICEBOX SCENARIO I have etched on acrylic but I haven’t tried to cut through. My guess is that it can’t, but I don’t know for sure.
hey can you also use a knife blade instaed of a deep blade? I just got one becasue it's on sale right now on amazon.
Yarbrough Creates you use can! Sometime the smaller cuts will be harder to get with 2mm Eva foam because the blade is wider.
awesome thank you!!!@@DownenCreativeStudios
can you use thicker than 2mm foam?
I don't recommend using foam that is thicker than 2mm. I have fit 3mm but the quality was not great and I had lots of surface tearing.
can it cut 3mm depron foam?
The max thickness is around 2.1 or 2.2mm for Cricut machines
@@DownenCreativeStudios thank you for the reply ; )
