    Good last day of May Mr Daniel. This is a beautiful set. The thing that for me and most likely others is that as kids, pennies were always our first collections so even more special. Have a great weekend.

    i really believe that the designation should be changed from "artificial toning" to "questionable toning" i have seen and heard of countless coins that have toned naturally but look a certain way coming back artificial toning when we know for a fact that nobody ever influenced the patina in any way.... its getting pretty absurd on what is labeled as fake when it wasn't influenced at all

      I agree

    • @samlock2667
      @samlock2667 3 місяці тому

      Collectors use the labels of “artificial toning” and “cleaned coins” to buy good coins for dirt cheap.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  3 місяці тому

      @@samlock2667 not true, but cleaned coins and AT always sell for less. So it’s risk management not the use of labels. Also, there’s crooks that might, but most do not do that.

    I got a big surprise today, I called Anacs to check on my submission of 5 coins. She said it would be another 3 weeks. Because they were working on one of my coins as an attribution. That blew me away, wasn't expecting that.

    I started buying scrap silver jewelry and post cards and foreign paper for craft shows. Then I started a small collection of penny books which were fairly easy to fill and sold easy for $10 each; and that cash helped me keep the bills paid for many years.

    Working on trying to assemble a AU/BU wheat collection right now. Would be interesting to see you do a video on differentiating cleaned wheats, artificial toning, wheats to avoid, etc. Does the mismatched alloy detract from a AU collection? I’m kind of partial to the those coins as it adds unique character. would really help tho use of us who are in the process of assembling collections if you did a vid along these lines

    That would have been a heck of a 1909s VDB !!

  • @jrpcoins
    @jrpcoins 3 місяці тому +4

    i paused your video to make my comment on those cents. any novice collector would see this and think wow its complete and even has the 1909-s V.D.B. but! it is very obviously and harshly cleaned that 1914-D is probably the only real coin worth anything and thats looking like it would get a G-02 or 6 at best. its unfortunate because you cant really do much else with the other coins all common dates and either damaged or cleaned. in order for a first page collection to be worth anything you really have to have bright red examples throughout and the type of binder helps but not much, like Wittman's sell nicely once filled but the blue holders made out of cardboard not so much. im still trying to complete my Lincoln cent collection and have dumped an easy 3k into my dansco album and im still missing a ton of key dates but im also only going for ms 65 RED specimens and up ive bought coins that were graded a 5 cracked them out and kept the label as pedigree for said coin. overall very nice video to have posted Daniel this is a topic not much covered that definitely needs to be!

    Wow. That collection at a glance was a mess. So many cleaned or retoned, stuff no one would want in a collection. Fake s-VDB, not good. Someone isn't going to be happy with the appraisal my guess. Wouldn't want to buy that collection, only pick a few out.

    I search Lincoln cent bank rolls. For the last 4 years, I pull out (for Witman album) Lincoln Memorial cents that still have their red mint luster (no RB), problem free, and fingerprint free. Only non reds that I have not found in circ, over the 4 years, are ......
    61, 65, 66, 68, 73-S, 82 small date cpr, 2000, and 2001. A challenge, to say the least.

    I don't envy your having to go through sets like that one, trying to make a fair offer to the person who collected those coins or often, the family who inherits a collection. They might not know anything about cleaned, or artificial toning on coins. They might only know what prices eBay has on sets currently for sale.
    You probably go through this with some regularity. Then try to inform the owner / family how you come up with a price. They get upset, think terrible things about you and coin dealers in general.
    All you can do is your best, and from my experience in trading with you, I know that you do.

      Why do you waste time and effort on this? The US Mint begs to differ www.usmint.gov/learn/kids/about-the-mint/penny#:~:text=The%20penny%20is%20the%20United,on%20the%20penny%20since%201909.
      They make it and they call it a penny too, and a dime is 10 cents, a nickel is 5 cents, a quarter is 25 cents, all are what we call our coins, it's always been this way, so time to change you paradigm.

    • @jeffw1267

      @CoinHELPu I'm going to have to go with Kevin on this one, unless you can show me an official U.S. cent that says "penny" on the back.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  3 місяці тому +1

      @@jeffw1267 the US Mint calls them pennies, the one cent is the denomination, penny is another name we call our cent. No one's opinion changes that, the US Mint mints them and they teach and refer and label them as pennies. People's opinions and stuck on the UK penny, isn't authority over what the US calls their one cent coins. Five Cents isn't a nickel either and our ten cents isn't a dime, but that is what we call them and that is how it is on this channel. I am not going to be corrected when it is a 100% accepted in our English lexicon. Just like "ain't" IS a word. Just because one thinks something is improper usage, doesn't make them correct, when it is accepted by every authority that publishes dictionaries, encyclopedias, and linguistic publications.
