I love your attention to detail and the quality of your work. I also like how you've engaged your family in your craft. Well done. Thanks for all that you do and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

    I have four of these hammers. Different sizes and species combinations. They are beautiful. The videos as great as they are, do not do them justice. Knowing they are handmade by the King family, makes them that much more special.

    I just made a hammer of my own (tigerwood with a band of redheart through the middle). What finish did you use on these? I was afraid to put lacquer or poly on because I was worried about it cracking during use. I thought about using a light oil finish, but worried that it would soften the wood too much. Any advice would be appreciated.

    • @KingsFineWoodworking
      @KingsFineWoodworking  3 роки тому

      Hi,
      That’s a tough one to say. I usually use a mid size for most chiseled joinery. But a full size for hitting stubborn pieces together. But I think probably the mid size works for more applications than the full.
      If you get a heavy/high density mid size, then it’s even more useful. Something with a Lignum vitae head is ideal.

    Hiya--I bought the plans for this mallet and look forward to shaping it out of some olive wood. I think you upgraded the style since you first made the plans--the angle for the cut along the 6" face isn't listed in the plans, is it the same as for the full size Thor's hammer, the same as short angles away from the end grain, or something else?

    I'm thinking I might buy a full size Lignum Vitae "motivator" for myself for Christmas. The hard part is deciding what handle I want to go with it! I think it might live on the mantle when it's not getting uncooperative projects in line. Any chance I could add a request a leather handle added to it -- understanding that would cost extra? I really liked that design from your other videos. I totally understand if you guys (and gals) will be too busy for special requests, though!

    Which is the Australian timber?

    • @KingsFineWoodworking
      @KingsFineWoodworking  3 роки тому

      Sadly there is no Australian timber in this lineup. I have never found a company that imports Australian wood for our market here in the US. Which is very sad. I have many beautiful pieces of my own that were sent to me as gifts from friends and viewers in Australia. Things like Buloke, Red Gum, and Ringed Gidgee. And they are amazing. But I wouldn’t be able to make anything with these to sell since I have no source.
      You might check out our video on building an Australian Buloke Thor’s Hammer. It was awesome.

    A while ago I asked you why you used such fine wood for your work. You answered that you already had the wood in your shop. Surely, that wood must have been used by now?

    • @TrailTrackers
      @TrailTrackers 3 роки тому

      @Ewa Bergman Holmberg : What if he would have said, "Because I can."? Would that have satisfied you? His website clearly indicates they make these exotic hammers to order. What's the big deal anyway?
      People are way too hung up nowadays on what 'other' people are doing. If somebody wants something, and he has the means to make it for them, then what the heck is the problem with that? And he doesn't have to answer to you or anybody else. Tell me why he should have to.

    • @KingsFineWoodworking
      @KingsFineWoodworking  3 роки тому +3

      Hello Ewa, we do a tremendous amount of building with exotic wood. We developed a client base a decade ago for fine pieces. And so it’s always in and around our shop.
      I’m not sure which piece you were asking about. But for example it isn’t uncommon for me to use a 3/4” wide strip of purpleheart to fit in a miter slot for a table saw sled runner. To some people that might seem silly. But I have hundreds of pieces & strips of exotic off cuts here. But no scrap oak or maple. So I wouldn’t go buy a piece of maple just for that. I’d use what I had here.
      I don’t expect I’ll just run out since I use it all the time.
      But a note for anyone interested: all exotics we buy are sustainably harvested by honorable companies who nearly always buy dead or fallen logs and every piece is certified and taxed so that the country it came from benefits the most.
      There’s no such thing as woodworkers causing the decline of tropical rainforests. We use 1/100th of 1% of the lumber product from these regions. For every fallen tree we harvest a thousand acres of trees are slashed and burned by those countries to make way for farmland.
      We respect the the earth, and the trees it grows, and the countries they grow in.
