Making a Mallet With Extra Weight

- I figured it was time to stop beating on my chisels with metal hammers, so I dug through my scrap bin and put together a mallet with some Ash and Black Walnut. I fired up my lead melting pot and added about 1.5 pounds of extra weight while I was at it.

I like this format, voice overs are not always necessary. Your videos and presentation is good enough viewer knew what was happening.
Thanks for the feedback.
thanks for quick reply. very nice job.
yeah man you do a good enough job getting the right camera shots and everything that a intro and a recap is good enough to show off your craftsmanship

Macronic . I agree with you. It was peaceful, relaxing, and INFORMATIVE. Talk when necessary. A video speaks 10,000 words
Beautifully done. No need for a voice over - anyone with a smidgen of talent can follow you and understand exactly what was done and why. I wish I had the equipment to do projects such as this. Actually this is not just a mallet - it is a work of art and an extension of your imagination.
Well thank you very much!
i did something very similar with hand tools, I'm sure you could too!
There are many mallet videos on youtube, but your mallet is my favorite - the choose of wood, design, finish. And your filmmaker skills is cool too. Keep going and good luck!
Thank you! I wasn't sure I was even going to do a mallet video just because there are so many others, but now I'm glad I did!
Gorgeous work. Non voice over perfect for this project. Pretty simple steps and self explanatory.
The ash is gorgeous and the mallet is stunning. Great work. Don't worry about the no commentary, the video came out just fine. In fact, these small projects don't really need commentary. Just take us along for the ride. lol. Many people seem to enjoy watching people make things and some people even fast forward through commentary. Find the right balance with your videos and keep making quality content like this. Thanks
Thanks for the great feedback Matt. Sometimes I feel compelled to explain too much, but I also hate to skip over important details that might not make sense as only a visual. Like you said, its all about balance.
Sorry to hear you have less time now, but thanks for keeping up with the videos. And that is one BEAUTIFUL mallet!
WOW ...that figured Ash along with the Black Walnut is absolutely Gorgeous !
Thanks Lou!
That's a gorgeous mallet!!!! I like how you show the whole build process! It helps me to learn. Thanks for another great video!!
Thanks Matt.
That was incredibly calming, I'd watch more of this format
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it!
That's not only a mallet, it's a work of art. I feel the urge to go out to my workshop now.
Many thanks.
Thank you very much Alan. Enjoy your shop time!
A beautiful tool that will last forever. Love the style.
Thanks Steven!
Great skill, great camera work, great editing.
Thank you very much.
It's an absolutely stunning piece, such a beautiful grain of the head.
Man this is probably the best mallet video on youtube. Great work
Well thank you very much!
Thanks for staying up late to make this. Great result.
I love how clean it is
Really cool use of focal point!
Great Job, the most beautiful mallet, i've ever seen. Thank's for sharing this video with us.
Greetings from across the Ocean.
Thank you very much!
I absolutely love that Mallet bud. Looks bloody awesome!!!
Great work and great video!! You are very meticulous and that is a quality that few people have. Congratulations!!!!!!
Thank you very much, I appreciate that!
That ash is beautiful!
Awesome video! Like the added weight feature. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Clark.
Gorgeous craftsmanship. I would not dare use it I would put it on a shelf.
Beautiful work.
Really nice for a quick little project. Might consider making that in couple more sizes.
Thanks Rick, when I knock a few things of my growing list I'm hoping to revisit it and make some variations.
Gorgeous piece of work, the ash is beautiful, great idea adding the weight.
Making one for my dad this father's day. Great work!
Thank you! Let me know how your's turns out!
One of the nicest mallets made that I have seen on utube.
Thank you Don!
it's already been said, it's to nice to use, I would put that up on display.
Beautiful. I am going to make one. Thanks
Mark, beautiful choice of woods. I think the mallet came out great. Keep the videos coming, either format is fine.
Thank you!
Beautiful video, beautiful mallet.
Beautiful mallet ,probably a great weight in use.
What a gorgeous mallet
Congratulations and Thank you for sharing
The first time I smacked something with a mallet that pretty I would probably cry. That is functional art, just beautiful!
Thank's Pat. I think that one is just going to be decoration and I will go back to the scrap pile and look for junkier wood to turn into a mallet to actually use.
This piece speaks for itself. Artistic!
Actually, I also liked the quiet, simple format, don't prefer when people speed up everything, or assume that we aren't already woodworkers, good job, and simple and beautiful mallet.
Nice craftsmanship!
Thanks!
Lovely looking tool; the wood grain is amazing. Super video. Best wishes
excellent video. superb work. no drama. Enjoyed!
simply wooooow. and the finish is totally awesome. Great choice of wood as well. Thks for sharing
Great design. Love how the top of the mallet turned out, awesome.

Looks amazing. love the finish on it
Too beautiful to smack things with :). Well done!
Very nice mallet, and good video format.
Thanks Kevin!
I really liked the new format, very calm yet still informative. Keep up the great work sir.
Very very nice! I really like your video format - no chit chat, calming music, and good editing. Plus a gorgeous tool at the end. Well done, cheers!
Thanks! (and a Sig is my daily carry fyi)
Same here, my friend ;o)
Very nice mallet...great build.
Beautiful work, sir.
Well thank you very much!
Excellent.
Your craftsmanship is simply amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Handsome design and well made video.
Well done sir! Beautiful.
Thank you!
gorgeous work
Awesome work. That Ash is looking great. I love the soft music. Bravo.
Nice, relaxing video, beautiful piece of Ash, great job all round.
Wow, now that is one gorgeous mallet. It's amazing how the grain just pops when hit will shellac or even water. And the idea of melting lead to fill the mallet with to give it weight is brilliant. I plan on making some mallets and push blocks for my family members who are all in the "Wood" business. I hated the idea of using bebe shots that many other UA-camrs put in their mallets. Though working with lead without a respirator or even keeping the melting lead outside so it doesn't cause long-term harm, is a must for me. I figure I can set it up right outside my shop door. So far, I'm loving your content and even in this video you didn't speak during the build was fine. If I could follow what you were doing anyone could.
I'm glad you like it! And working with melted lead can definitely be a health hazard. In good weather I use that furnace outside. When I use it inside, I have all my shop doors wide open which makes for really good ventilation, and I have my vent fans running from the time I turn it down until it is cool to the touch again. Also, I don't let my kids with rapidly developing little brains in the shop on those days at all.
Great project and video.. This video was self explanatory and flowed very well with the music... Big thumbs on this one!
Thank you Kim!
Really enjoyed your video and very impressed with your craftsmanship. Very nice mallet.
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this. The mallet came out beautiful. Inspired me to grab some left over scrap and do my own mallets. Now I have a problem. They are so pretty I'm not sure if I'll be banging them up.
That is the conundrum isn't it!? I gave this one to my Dad and he just has it as a decoration.
Beautiful mallet.
As an amateur with woodworker, i typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxrYREG3-7f1Aqk9ams3ZESRNzGnfdUtyQ . Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness woodplans. Works i now work like a genius. That is great!
Beautiful great work
What an amazing piece... I love it! Thanks so much for knocking this project out and sharing it - great job!!!
Thank you, I’m glad you like it!
Gorgeous mallet brother!
Nice looking mallet right there. Great video!
Thanks Bruce!
Beautiful design!
Thank you!
Very beautifully crafted. I really like the calm music in this video too. A nice relaxing moment in a crazy, busy world. Thanks.
Thanks Chris!
Agreed!
Very cool!!!
Very nice craftsmanship, Keep up the good work!
Love it , great work
Thanks Brian!
Great video thanks for sharing! I love that you shared a link to the Branding iron and Melting pot because I'm in the market for both of those! Thank you thank you thank you! I am going to make a custom mallet now !
Awesome! And you are very welcome! You'll have to let me know how it turns out.
Very nice. No worries on the format change.
beautiful dude! love the contrast of woods. I will be making my first mallet thanks to this video.
I'm glad I could inspire you! YOu'll have to let me know how it turns out!
Beautiful
Never would've thought you could dump molten lead? Into wood without something combusting. I'm really enjoying your channel, our work styles are very similar.
Lead has a really low melting point, so as soon as it comes off the heat it starts to harden. It is still really hot and there is a little scorching and smoking, but I have spilled enough of it on my workbench that I was sure it couldn't light the wood on fire.
This is the best looking mallet I've seen built on here! Great job! I want to do one like this myself!
Well Done!
Great video, no need for voice over on this one. We could have used a little text on the screen explaining what the metal was, but I was able to figure it out based on the context.
Thanks for keeping up the content with the new work schedule, I know I appreciate the effort.
Thanks Ryan!
Good job guy, easy to do
Beautiful Tool.
Thanks Richard!
Nice mallet and the video was thoroughly enjoyable w/out voiceover.
very nice! thanks for sharing that.
Use that forge to pour aluminum into cracks and holes into wood like you would with epoxy, seen it somewhere and find out awesome
That's actually a lead melting pot. It doesn't get nearly hot enough to melt aluminum. But I like where your head's at!
I have just found your channel and I'm really enjoying your projects. I think this mallet is awesome.
Thanks Rob!
Work of art, love it.
Very nice. I liked your crucible, looks like that would be easier to pour the leas than if you had to pick up a hot pot. The woos choice was beautiful, and I liked how you did the kerf for the wedges.
That is a really handy pot, its designed that way for bullet casting... you get a much more consistent pour into a mold that way which results in a more accurate bullet.
Gunflint Designs would you share the make and model?
Great video,I been looking for ideas for me mallet, deffinatly gonna use a few from your build, but thinking I'm going more dead blow, and just use pellets, but your wood choices and assembly are spot for n,keep it up...
Using pellets is a good idea. I wasn't too concerned about a dead-blow feature - I just wanted it to be heavy.
Thanks for that
Gorgeous
That is a very nice mallet, and you did a fantastic job of burning your logo into the head. It came out so clean.
What finish did you use on that? It looks amazing!
Beautiful...love the branding iron...great finishing touch
nice result!
Amazing, thank you.
Beautiful!
I made one similar to this except I used lead fishing weights and epoxy to add weight to the mallet. I drilled the holes, filled them with the weights and poured the epoxy in with them. It took a good while to set up solid but made a good mallet, probably not quite as heavy as this one, but certainly usable. Good way to make it if you don't have a lead melting pot.
Yep, that's a good method too. I've also seen people used weights or bb's, but no epoxy, that way it acts like a dead-blow mallet.
Good job, bro. Format was great.
Thanks!
Nice Job Mate 👍👍👍👍👍👍
