    “In Mande society, the jeli was an historian, advisor, arbitrator, praise singer (patronage), and storyteller. They essentially served as history books, preserving ancient stories and traditions through song. Their tradition was passed down through generations. The name jeli means "blood" in Manika language. They were believed to have deep connections to spiritual, social, or political powers. Speech was believed to have power in its capacity to recreate history and relationships.” This is so fascinating. Music with a deep spiritual connection and powers.

      @Cara Pilgreen Yep. We're doing a project on renaissances and specifically their innovations. We got the Mali Empire and we're making our innovation on music and the griots so we found this video.

    • @Leo-nz4nf
      @Leo-nz4nf 5 років тому +1

      @Cara Pilgreen Wow. We had to do 3hrs/4 pages of research for our first "phase..." then we had Phase 2... then 2A, 2B, 3, and now 3A, so our research journal, as a group of 4, is at 54 pages of information. We are one month in and a couple of months to go. The end goal is a 3-5min podcast on the innovations of our renaissance... so that's going to be great.

      Jorge Neri Precisely, almost all modern western music are African derived/ inspired.
      Blues, Country, Jazz, Rock , pop and of course hiphop.

    • @xzybit1984

      This kind of music in West Africa is very old. It dates back to the Mali empire in the 12th century

    • @SirAntonPowell
      @SirAntonPowell 5 місяців тому

      @@sjappiyah4071You don’t know what you’re talking about. Country, blues, hip hop all have their own root merits- and have no derivative basis of African music . While it’s all beautiful, That is inaccurate. 😂
