Why people believe they can’t draw - and how to prove they can | Graham Shaw | TEDxHull

- Why is it that so many people think they can’t draw? Where did we learn to believe that? Graham Shaw will shatter this illusion - quite literally - in a very practical way. He’ll demonstrate how the simple act of drawing has the power to make a positive difference in the world.
Graham specialises in the art of communication and has helped thousands of people to make important presentations. He is perhaps best known for his use of fast cartoon drawings to communicate ideas and is the author of ‘The Art of Business Communication’.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The worst thing you can ever do is say that you can't do something. It's upsetting to believe that so many people have passed on never fulfilling a dream because they told themselves they can never do it. Always believe in yourself and give it a go, what's the worst that can happen?
absolutely true
Financially broke
It’s the same thing "I can’t be financially stable"
Bro there used to be someone in my class who could draw way better than me but know i own an art channel (not a good one but still) 😎😎😎😎
This needs some clarification.
It's okay to say and understand that you can't do something. But it's important to know that a lot of things you can't do because you haven't learnt to do it yet. Let yourself be a beginner.
My older brother taught me to draw when I was five. I recently retired from the Motion Picture industry after 41 years as a scenic artist in Hollywood. Thanks for the great story.
@Dr sonia He is. He didn't said he was one but he only told us that he retired from an art industry. It's somewhat obvious...
I just started to learn how to draw for my own personal gratification. Do you have any general advice on how I can improve?

It’s not that I think I can’t draw, its that I can’t draw *well*
This is the real problem for us, bro
No one can at the start, you just to have to draw to practice. No one is born good at drawing. I myself am an amateur but I am much better than before because I practiced.

As an artist, I will say, these are actually great drawings! If you aren’t an artist and you were thinking “oh well, no one would actually like this anyways” (idk if anyone would actually say that, but that’s smth I would say tbh) if I saw this, I would genuinely love seeing these. If I could get my own portrait in this style, I would genuinely frame it on my wall. I genuinely adore this type of art style, idk why, but I love it.

As an aspiring artist whos been drawing for over a year, getting frustrated, seemingly getting nowhere, seeing this really reminded me about the joy of drawing. People think that they cannot do things, simply because they do not know where to start. Information overload is a real thing, especially in todays world of seemingly infinite distractions. It's all about breaking things down into smaller parts, and analyzing them. To truly understand something, we must look at the smaller components that make up the whole equation. Same goes for time, something I am still learning is that to not be overwhelmed with life and to remain peaceful, you must treat each day one step at a time, literally and metaphorically. Focus on the moment. Seek clarity and understanding in things that you wish to, and for God's sake, do not forget how much potential you have. Remember, everyone who ever did anything amazing, was doubted by everyone around them, and a lot of our self doubt, comes from the fact that we tend to believe what others say at times we shouldn't. All I wish by commenting here right now is that maybe one person even reads this and decides to go on with something that they have been doubting that they could do for some time, and that it takes you on a journey that changes you life for the better, and I, will do my best to do the same.

People really think drawing is some impossible task when they've never spent any time doing it, but the way he demonstrated it really is all there is to it. I tend to draw more realistic or stylized images, but can confirm that the process is the exact same. I learned how to draw noses by copying one I saw in a comic book of mine, and all I do now is follow the same process making slight alterations when I want something that looks different.
People think that really? I’ve heard people say art is easy and “anyone can do it” like it totally doesn’t take 10 or 5 years
@@Silencer796Lol, if it takes you 5 years to get better at drawing, you're doing something wrong or you're really not drawing to improve like you said you are. If you're dead set on being better, you'd be focusing on REAL things that can make you better like learning Anatomy, perspective, color theory, etc... instead of drawing freestyle or copying a reference with no real objective. Sure, you're going to get a sense of it, but it can only take you so far. It's like doing an action, unable to understand what you're doing. Take for example, sweeping. Your mother told you to sweep and you did. The question is, are you sweeping the right way? Lots of people think that by just drawing everyday, you'll get better, but that's technically incorrect. If you do it the right way, you'll improve faster. If you don't, then you're going to spend more time.

I draw for fun, and if you're young or just starting off you should try to remember this:
Grades in school mean next to nothing, if you get a bad grade in arts don't let that destroy your interest in it.
This nearly happened to me, but luckily I was able to avoid it.
Extra note: Always finish a drawing, I personally keep all drawings in a little notebook with their date of when I drew them. While you're drawing something you might believe that it isn't good, or that you can do better but if you finish the drawing and look at it again a few months/years later you'll be able to look at it in a different way and truly appreciate it.
I also love sharing my drawings with someone, it's not needed to have fun but it personally makes me motivated to get even better, and the feedback/compliments you'll receive will be really helpful :)

Art inspired me to take up photography and I'm really good at that, I knew I had to practice and now I'm professional level. I'm neurodivergent though and that has helped (and hindered) me a lot.

Art is a skill too and I find it astonishing how many people don't realise it's something you can practice, and something you HAVE TO practice to become good at it. If you think artists are born with a brush in hand, painting like the old masters, you're undermining countless hours of hard work and practice they've put into art. Drawing is easy if you do what artists do, copy eachother.
I take 6 different types; Avatar (the Last Airbender), Kipo, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Snailords - for an example.
I take the basic lines; facial outlining, nose, ears, etc. From one style.
Then I get more detailed with things like reshaping the eyes to be more pronounced, lips, nose, etc from another artists.
Better details like the iris and reflecting from another artist.
Shape and style of hair from another.
And I continue combing things until I have a sort of blueprint for really making it my own.
Like, all my characters have different types of fantasy ears.
Mermaid ears, fairy ears, elf ears, etc.
And then the shadowing and shading is all automatically me.
As is coloring.
Then by the end, you can't tell what it's origins are.
Copying artists into something else is what we call inspiration and reimagining.
You can also just take a picture, and draw it, then detail it differently. Like making it look cgi like Final Fantasy or WoW.
Everyone can draw, if they take the time a patience.
True artists don't say "practice makes perfect," we say "practice makes better."
Because we're always striving to be better and improve.
But it does take time and effort, and a lot of self love.

I'm a self-taught artist who loves to draw animals and especially birds. I experiment with all sort of things and of course, not everything turns great bc my drawings can't all be perfect.
I started my journey when I was a little kid, spending my days scribbling with markers instead of playing with dolls. When I was 5 or 6, I started to have a real interest into drawing and drew all kinds of things that were in my mind whenever I had free time. When I was in grade 2, I started to have a real interest in birds and animals and little did I knew my passion would lead me where I am now. I started self-teaching myself the techniques by drawing out of photos. Literally. Now, I only need a little bit of inspiration and a bird photo reference (mainly for the species so I don't mess up the color scheme) to create a masterpiece. That little 80 pages sketchbook that I got for literally CA$10 at my college's store gives me the motivation I need to continue my studies by filling a page every Tuesday between my maths and English classes while I have 3h to kill. After growing up drawing, I truly think it's smth you learn and need to tackle every day in order to get better. Being an artist is like being a musician: practice every day or you won't get better.
I want to give a piece of advice for every artist who doubts themselves: try everything, by doing that, you will find what you like to draw the most as well as your style. See your art as a way to express yourself instead of seeing it as "it always needs to be perfect and please others". It doesn't need to be perfect, nor does it need to even make sense. Your sketchbook is like your little kingdom, no one needs to see it nor does every page needs to be a masterpiece.
TEDx events serve as a reminder that innovation knows no boundaries. I'm continually impressed by the creativity and ingenuity showcased by speakers from diverse backgrounds.

You just had to copy from the book stroke by stroke. With every trial I got better. It's also true that you don't realise you like something until you try it. I started liking art. Till date when someone tells me 'you draw so well, I can't draw at all'. I tell them, "anyone can draw, you just haven't tried it enough".
No artist will say their drawing is the best, because in their eyes they could be better.
They can be satisfied with an artwork, but still think that it could be better.
I drew my profile picture and while most people think it looks good, I think I could have done way better lol

People'd say my artwork looks awesome but I just think "Really? It's just a random doodle it's not THAT great....."
Da Dragon Durp - Yea same, also for me as I've gotten older I've found I have less and less time for all my hobbies, and while I do enjoy drawing and sketching I simply don't have the time that I used to for it. As a result my quality has dropped below even what I know I could do before - it sucks...

That's true. Like Mathematics, Communication, Drawing and any other form of arts are skills that can be learned. It's like the saying that we have in our place, "You'll never know how good you are at Math, unless you do more Maths."
Because learning a skill consumes time and effort. The problem is that we easily give up, we lack motivation, or we're uninterested.
What a beautiful session
I was so very depressed today and one friend of mine shared this link. Trust me. It made me smile and giggle like a kid after the traumatizing day
when people say "OMG I CAN'T DRAW A STICKMAN"
I'm like "Bitch, please, you just don't want to."
Like 75% of my friends draw. It's not hard. Nobody gives a shit if you suck, you draw for fun.
Yasuhiro I cant draw it doesnt matter how much i try

Great video! but let's shift our attention to something productive. As we all know, becoming a successful person is not an overnight job, but the secret they use is what the middle class is hesitant to do, like the stock market.
You're right and I think everyone should buy stocks, invest in cryptocurrencies and buy more stocks, this is the future. Anyone determined to live rich should be able to develop an investment mindset.
That's a good point! I think it's obvious that the top three investment vehicles today are cryptocurrencies, stocks, and real estate. To achieve all these achievements, take risks and be patient enough.
That's the reason I've been living the life of financial gain for the past five years, thanks to business genius John Joseph.
I must admit that he is the best. It's a massive gain season because bitcoin has risen so high and my portfolio with him is about to skyrocket

im a teenager who mostly watches gaming channels, how did i end up here lol
It was an eye opener though, kinda like that "Maths is a language" video
+Zorroaster I'm 15, I manage to get from Rainbow 6 Siege to Klein bottles over at Numberphiles videos, then to here. I am lost and I feel afraid about learning :(

I was planning on playing Siege until I realised I had been upp all night and it's 8:30 am in my timezone
Slothyn its 1:30 am here, I'll probably fall asleep watching youtube
Watched this in highschool! Kids were complaining over art projects how they couldn’t draw, this video actually made some kids try after that
Digital artist here, been drawing for 4 years and I'm surprised the level reached, it all started with me grabbing a pen, looking up references and staying sane xD
THE REAL QUESTION IS...
*WHY ARE ALL THE DRAWINGS LOOKING UP*
It's a bird no it's a plane.ohh yea it is a bird
Alright then?
It real estate

let’s be honest, no one searched for this but everyone is happy they found it
Agreed. Now we can keep each other from getting bored during quarantine!
Honestly disappointing, since I thought the drawings would be better
Not me cause I just learned a very easy design wich I cant draw either.
I did!!! I saw this video like 2y ago and I've been searching for it the whole day
Well i did
This was a fun watch. Im an artist, the best advice is be willing to make mistakes. Welcome them, have fun with them. Theyre one of the fastest ways to imrpove.
9:15 im 17 years old and i just started using this trick and it works like magic for me i can understand concepts more clearly than ever before in my entire life. 😅
this video is so pure. i bet all the adults there giggling are remembering what it felt like to draw when they were children. this gives me hope in humanity honestly
I think they are giggling cause they didn't have covid to worry about
I love the way he talks it reminds me of Bob Ross
@@flat_foot9017 Do people really worry about covid though? Did you worry about the flu before 2020? Then why do you now?
@@GrooveisKing do you?
@@smugslider3690 I never worried about the flu, no. And certainly don't now. If the news pointed all their cameras at car crashes and told you if you choose to drive you're choosing to put everyone at risk, people would suddenly be terrified and feel guilty driving. The flu has always killed people, covid hasn't killed any more than any flu has any year before it if you actually look at the data. The number of deaths in the U.S. for instance has gone up within a certain number (around 10-15k more each year I believe) along with population growth and that number hasn't moved even a little. Also, heart disease, pneumonia and diabetes have all dropped (for the first time in 40plus years) at the EXACT rate covid has risen, all while "the flu" as we have known it has... ready? COMPLETELY DISAPPEARED. FLATLINED WHEN COVID "ARRIVED". They merely shined a light on something that has always been there. Covid 19 is simply a new strain of a virus we've dealt with our entire lives. Protect the old and sick, and LEAVE THE REST OF US YOUNG AND HEALTHY ALONE. Not to mention, the last year has marked the biggest transfer of wealth to companies like Amazon ever in history. Makes you think a bit doesn't it? Almost makes you want to USE YOUR BRAIN 🧠🤔 😁
it's not that I think I can't draw
it's just that I don't draw as good as I would like to.
well said that's exactly the true point
FuzzyWuzaCat Anything is Possible, if i can, u can too
Well I'm trying and I have improved a lot, but still not as good as I want. I want to become an animator.

Thank you! I'm a wildlife artist who does live painting demonstrations at special events for natural science museums and have wanted to have a better response to the folks who say "I can't draw a straight line". I've always believed that art is more of a learned skill than any sort of special talent, but your teaching approach is wonderful! I've got a "Darwin Day" event next Saturday so it will be a perfect venue to demonstrate how people can "evolve" their drawing skills!
From teaching others how to draw to becoming Amazon's ceo

its just that this art resembles boomer art too much.
i don't like it.

This is a game changer for me. As u said, i believed I couldn't draw, but with these simple line n curves n ur instructions, it got me smiling. Ur an inspiration 😍😍. Thank you
Very subjective and really depends on context though. This is like asking someone if they can do Math, them saying no, and you giving them a equation of simple addition.

+Koo Trip - Musiikki its more about "right observing" than it is drawing skill - maybe have a look into betty edwards drawing on the right side of the brain
+Koo Trip - Musiikki i agree.
I couldn't bored watching this man for 3 hours. With this 15 minutes tutor i start sketching some crazy cartoons. He is great.
so sorry that i didn’t see this years ago. Thank you for doing this. What I always get frustrated by is when someone says that they “cannot” or simply “I am not creative”. The reason that humans are top of the food chain is our ability to adapt. Our creativity. We are fairly frail, not the best vision, slow moving, cannot swim.. Our creativity is what makes us what we are.
I am disappointed, not that the art is bad, but that the title was misleading. I expected to actually learn why people think they can't draw and how to teach them that they can, not doodle with a guy and listen to his stories
Yeah, not the worst click bait in the world
I guess some people can't look at anything more than at face value...
youll not get picasso over 10 minutes
It was a deeper meaning, people have beliefs about what they are and they live it without using what they could actually do. When he shows them a normal way to draw some things it breaks the belief that they cant draw and shows anything they simply decide not to do because they believe that they cant can be done with trying it
we have same thought... why do they think they can't draw? we all experience to try to draw since childhood... why do we have thoughts that we CAN'T DRAW?

I led a children's choir when I was younger. And I had all sorts of elementary schoolers and a few middle schoolers and many were not used to hear or use their voice at all, many thinking they couldn't sing. I kind of went along with all the needs kids had, from having them yell and then sing from the front part of a church with fine acoustic to the back to jumping on top of a table in our choir room, to show a boy who would only mumble in a very low voice, he had actually a wide range. I pretended to be a full moon, hence needing to be on that table. He was surprised but agreed to be the wolf howling and growling at me. After that little exercise he was thrilled and dared to actually find higher notes or even manage to sing correct intervals. I had been warned about his "inability" by other adults. I said we would try and if he was enjoying himself he was welcome. I hadn't a single child that could not sing. They got better through practise sure, but this first experience with their own voice doing something outlandish is more like a portal they came through. And you could even notice a shift in their spoken voice, which was now showing a confidence that hadn't been there before. It was one of many very rewarding things I did. It felt kind of therapeutic for me as well as for them. The only person I know who can't sing, is my mother. I am sure, because she does sing with confidence in a way you cannot recognise any melody. Of course I tried training her hearing. But there seems to be a real Amusicality. My father is a very good singer but never did so when he got over 35 years of age. I wish he would have. It's such a joyful thing.
Yay, wholesome stuff! This made me smile and reminded me of a quote from a movie years ago "You only think you can't dance because someone told you that you can't"
