- Kathleen Lynch from the University of Cincinnati's Classics Department is back to look at more of Assasin's Creed Odyssey. Today we check out the Theater of Dionysus and the Athenian Agora. NOTE: Uploads of parts 1 and 2 of this video were unfortunately cut-off suddenly at the end. The complete version combines both videos and the missing footage.
Complete Video: • An Archaeologist React...
How are we doing? Please take a moment and share your thoughts on this brief survey: www.surveymonk...
Kathleen was responding to a pre-recorded video that Russell made (before knowing what she would comment on), which is why it seems like he is rushing past things. We won't make that mistake again!
Please tell her we are extremely grateful for her knowledge.
Part 2 was better then part 1. Yeah it would be a lot better if the game play was done live. Stream it through discord, or some other platform.
Please, redo this the right way.
So how did he stop at 2:45 when she asked? How was it pre-recorded?
@@Jay_Kay666 sure. want to pay for her trip expense?
She should play the game and explained everything, I would watch 50+ hours of it.
Right? I'm surprised archeologists stuck at home haven't done that yet. They could have had hours of material & months to play through everything, so crazy!
I'd be interested to se what she thinks of Delphi, I've heard that it's incredibly accurate in the game, but I am not sure.
Ya, they should also get some archeologists to point out these details that didn't match the timeline.
Yep, I would totally watch craploads of this, its incredible
Yes, make that happen. I really would like to get those game rated by scientists
Archeologist: I just don’t get how they get some things so right but others wrong.
Me, who always waits for the last moment to get things done: ... I have a theory
because they're shitbisoft
Because variety is the spice of life. Sometimes they just choose what they think looks nicer instead of what's most accurate.
They have a historical tour you can go through as a bonus, separate game mode, where you can get more accurate information on the characters in the game and their real roles in life, as well as the places you visit. I don't know if it explains any of the inaccurate elements and why they're fictionalized, probably not, but it's a nice way to get some understanding and culture of ancient Greece if the game's inaccuracies bothered you at all.
@Helios i don't think you know what cringe means
@@2cool0 I didn't want to say this but it's pretty cringe, dude. We're only telling you because we're your bros, and bros are real with each other.
@@2cool0 I mean even Unity had an amazingly detailed Notre-Dam used after the fire in real life and that game was the epitome of gaming glitch disasters prior to Cyberpunk so they're not entirely shitty always
The amount of detail and care that went into these games is why I fell in love with them. There's something remarkable about being able to walk the path of history and get a feel for what life might have been like. My sincerest appreciation goes out to the developers and researchers that put these games together.
the reason everything is so accurate is because they literally went over there with top of the line Kimbal surveying equipment and painstakingly laser scanned the entire area, this did this as well in several other cities in which Ubisoft games have occurred more notably France and they've offered to help with the reconstruction of Notre Dame after the fire because they have the most detailed survey of the buildings because they wanted a 100% copy in game. not all the decorations are 100% accurate though because they did take SOME creative liberties to make it more appealing in game.
That’s really cool I didn’t know that they did that. That might also explain why some details like the switch back leading to the Parthenon was used (the Roman period path) as opposed to the direct hill that would have been there during the Peloponnesian war.
@@TownianScout quite likely since it would have required a bit of extra work to reconstruct rather than simply using the data collected to make it simpler to cut some costs in the games development. i only just started playing Assassin's Creed since Odyssey but now i do plan on playing all the others in the series. another detail in the game they've incorporated is a "history mode" that has a pathed quest to follow and explore as they show you various artifacts and tell you the stories behind a lot of the city. they really went all out and in depth with not just amazing game play but also with history and education. while they're not the only ones to add historical/mythical figures to games another one that stands out is the Final Fantasy series, many of them use Greek/Roman/Norse/Japanese/Middle East gods and accounts throughout in the form of bosses, mobs or locations and many of them are quite intertwined with the accounts from the stories of old. much creative liberties are taken however within the Final Fantasy series but they do try to stay within the bounds of what the characters were depicted like in the stories. it's quite unique and i think highly overlooked by many who play the game simply for the story and never look at it any closer, which i won't argue their story telling is some of the best and it really pulls emotions out of you as you get attached to the characters on their journey.
@@ToeCutter454 I love the mythology and history that is included in this series. It inspires me to do a lot of reading up too!
A lot of it just down to costs. A game still has to ship, and if you can save on data to ship and production time by swapping out detail sculptures and paintings (like the deeds of heracles on the Athens temple that they subbed in), why wouldn't you? A lot of people wouldn't even notice the difference.
It’s almost as if Ubisoft started the fire in order to promote their game...
She is so polite... If I was her I will say. Man can you please let me see, calm down!!!!
Wish he slowed down a bit. He just ran past everything. Just walk up to a landmark and let her talk. Stop climbing everything and slowly walk smh
Would be even better to go into photo mode
Why is he even playing it? You can take photos and zoom in...what a noob
Ditto!
This was edited . Everything she talked about .he was able to view it clearly .
they posted a comment now about what hapenned
:)
Cool videos but why do you edit them to cut off the speaker mid word...? Like... there was also no reason to break it into two videos.
Why did that stop so abruptly? And where is part 3? I love this woman's enthusiasm.
Exactly!! I hope they realised that guy can't edit videos and raw material has been sent to movie department.
I would have watched a walktrough with that woman narrating.
@@Jay_Kay666 I agree. The man talking with her is also a pain in the ass. They should get rid of him.
I could watch a history styled TV show with her talking about all the details in Odyssey and Origins (though I guess it may not be her area of expertise?). Cus these video games are an unreal example of living history and to get context added in is amazing to watch!
Is there a reason why you are running around like a maniac while she's trying to see the details?
felt like a cliffhanger lol
I'm an ancient historian and this is my favourite game because of the huge level of historical detail. Even though not everything is accurate, I have a huge appreciation for the team behind this and how carefully they thought everything through.
Agreed. The parts that are accurate far outweigh the parts that aren't, and honestly most of the inaccuracies are there for gameplay purposes. Spartan naval battles and all that.
It's really quite amazing how much effort was put into reconstructing ancient Greece. Of course, there are the embellishments, and a couple missing details, but on the whole there is and perhaps never will be anything like it. It's too bad that after Origins and Odyssey there is none of the archeological history really offered in Valhalla, although I do find it to be a more fun game in its own ways.
I wish the woman would have the control of the game. This video could last hours and it would be sooo interesting if you just let her talk and show everything what she obviously wanted to.
Please redoit
Why separate the two videos? No need. But these were really nice to see. She's so into it.
More videos = more views = more $$$ from UA-cam.
I like how clean the streets are, Greeks were well known for using everything scrap of material they could until it served no purpose and then they'd still use that for something
2:43 at last, She says : WAIT, lets STOP HERE.. lol.. 😁
The players looks like he is bored so he’s rushing everything. Useless to have this kind of reaction video..better if the archaeologist have her own reaction video, we will appreciate it more.
Yeah, totally, I love and empathize with her passion, she deserves a better space.
ubisoft should do one of these reviews with their own game designer and history experts.
They did, look for NotaBene. It's a french ytb, maybe you can find subtitles. He did it for ac V
Damn, i wish she tried and played through the game, talking about all this, having the time to explain what they got right and what is wrong, would be so interesting.
I could watch someone talking about the historical details in Assassin's creed games for my whole entire life. So fascinating.
I hope this archaeologist has her on youtube channel shes really awesome id watch her video regarding her work
perfectly cut explanations moment
This is a Great video!! Wish there was more.
1:40 haha i just literally watched another archaeologist talk about that as "totally fake, it would be round" xD
The game is so big you could make an entire series of her commentary.
she is one gorgeous professor!
This should have been a 1hr series.
Okay, 40 hrs.
I loved listening and learning how accurate they was. I am amazed that Ubisoft came so close to getting the game almost exactly as history really was. I am going to play it now. Thanks
Love it! Great to have an expert input into the game
i will never understand cyprus and ionia was cut out of the game but the biggest mistake was that rhodes was not included sad that we never got the chance to climb on the colossus of rhodes
Because Assassins creed odyssey play's in 431 BC and the collossus of rhodes was build 280 BC but yeah would be nice to climb on the collossus of rhodes
(sorry for the bad english ':D)
@@Timo_812 do you rly think people care about historical accuracy? a gr8 missed opportunity a gr8 island just lost also dont forget the acropolis of lindos so sad tbh well to be fair cyprus was not included not even ionia so yeah
This is so good! I love her passion!
I love the historical bits when the game is loading.
Does oddysey not have a camera mode? It would have been useful in this series.
Nice ! Would like another episode where they explore Delphi
Would be amazing if she could comment more at the tour mode. She would be able to see more details there.
Besides the fact that I love archaeology, this video (along with the 1st part) makes me want to play Assasin's Creed 😅
Note to myself. When inviting archaeologists to my house, make sure to have the right pottery.
A lot of the incorrect details are due to reused assets as well, because they needed to have certain designs repeated across the map. It wouldn't be practical on a labor or performance level to create bespoke assets to match all of the details perfectly, hence the less detailed pots and stuff. They also just made some anachronistic changes for the purposes of showing off their idealized version and having cool graphics.
If only he could jt STOP panning around when shes talking and focus on what she is saying. It is distracting and ANNOYING. horribly executed video of an otherwise great idea
Not that it makes a difference but the year this game took place is probably 429 BCE. There are a couple of other event indicators most notably the death of Pericles and the Athenian plague. Though the plague came in 430 BCE the game plays it like it was relatively quick that the plague came and killed Pericles and Kleon took over. Edit: (So after actually continuing to play the game which I just now completed I was surprised to be at the battle of Amphipolis where SPOILER the death of Brasidas and Cleon occurred. This of course took place I believe in 422 BCE so this game pretty much jumps all over condensing the timeline into very brief periods or...traveling takes a lot longer than it seems)
Thanks for this video! It's very interesting, fun and cool. For me this is the best game of all the series, specially for the accurate details that have been taken care of.
So no part 3?
Yooo Ubisoft how bout you hire this woman :') This level of knowledge about the actual architecture and culture of the civilization plus the Ubisoft art budget would make for some insane games. The level of detail she can describe how a simple jar is made tells me they'll no longer need to just fill in the blanks by smearing out pixels until it looks complete enough :p
"Jars" or pottery is actually one of the most important things in ancient archeology so its important to know about them
@@MBM1117727 I mean it really isn't for Ubisoft though but it's still really cool if it's accurate :p
shouldve showed her sokrates :)
Damn.. she sure knows her stuff.. I admire that alot!
He is really irritating me,come on dude !!!give the lady time to talk then you can play later 🏌️
Thanks for this video. It is interesting theme. I was showing my Paris in AC Unity when I was writing the article. But from an architect's point of view. But Origins and Odysey are still the domain of archaeologists
Is there a full video, this is magnificent.
You should do part 3 and add poseidon statue
The funny thing about Assassin's Creed is that they don't have to be historically accurate. The past parts are based on the person's memories. Didn't they use a book to go to the past in Odyssey? That's probably even worst for accuracy than trying to use the person's actual memories.
Are there an Egyptian archeologist expert to discuss AC: Origins? I love hearing expert opinions and like their reactions.
More please.
Other places in Greece and Alexandria in Egypt maybe.
Its a shame they dident use the games history mode or what is was called that was specificly designed to explain the history of this time. I think that was available in Odyssey but maybe that 1 was only in AC Origins.
Where's part three?
Oh my, you guys have to upload in 1080 at least! So much detail is lost at 720p.
100% period correct or not the detail is amazing and you do feel like you're in Ancient Greece.
Part 3?
Awesome awesome awesome.. please tell me there's more..
u cut out alot of stuff we didn't see in the first video
i'm sure whoever put this video together and rendered it was trying their best, but like
i know for a fact that you can do better. c'mon guys you're a major educational facility
Only thing I hate about these videos is how they end.
Can we have more of this?
An actual expert reviewing, it's a welcome breeze compared to Buzzfeed ( or another similar scam media ).
Very interesting
Odyssey is one of the most beautiful AC games aesthetic wise imo but because the gameplay is such a grind I never really got around to finishing it. It really sucks that it was such a pain in the ass though because I'm a huge fan of ancient Greece and the history of Spartans. One of these days I might force myself to completing it but for now I'm more focused on AC Valhalla and AC Origins.
Have you thought about the assassin's creed tour game of greece?
@@hutt1936 No but thanks for the idea. I'll have to look into it.
That's how history must be taught.
Run by prerecorded at breakneck speed, broken in two and cut off any enthusiasm mid sentence. Sound like a proper public education yeah👌🏻
this game is amazing and this makes me want to play it again lol.
Part 1 and part 2 end abruptly. Does anyone know if they've ever released a part 3, 4 and so on?
Didn't show her any dialogue with Socrates or Pericles? Didn't show Leonidas nor the Persians? Part 3 when?
she's totally here to talk about architecture but is diluted with gameplay dynamics.
I could imagine the pottery here were frequently used and not well preserved therefore could have existed but no proof of it.
Kathleen you are great! Good for you that you excavate my city (Athens) as you know better, it’s full of ancient stuff all over, I hope this summer coming, you will be in Athens again. Would love to meet you in real life and have a talk. You look like you know so many things that are in Athens and about my ancestors 😊
I would rather see her do the tour and go through the cities. Because she would know what would and should be were. There would obviously be some mistakes as AC games do add their touches.
More more please
This was such an interesting video - get her back on!
Why is this in so many parts?
Man developers worked so hard but they failed to emphasis the importance of work to gamers . Would have loved to learn about this details, while playing .
I've played this game through and this is great! You should do a playthrough on twitch
what happened to part 3?
No doubt , odyssey is very very well detailed AC ever. I haven't play the valhalla yet.
I love how these videos end😂
everything beautiful, but...now? it's finish?
Where is part 3?
The pots is probably to give CPU's a chance to catch there breath. and save money on prop designers.
Love this
this guy just destroy the mood
I can‘t get over the fact that Americans pronounce those Ancient Greek names in American .
Can someone mod her into the game ??! Please 🙏
Pots - shapes vs decorations - I think it's kind of a... organic creative decision? Or maybe even unconscious?
Like, the artists were shown the reference images, and they noticed the shapes, of course, but the decorations probably weren't that clear on those reference images, and the artists didn't realize there's cathegories of those decorations and pairings of which are appropriate to what shapes, so they just drew on one big uncathegorized pool of "this is the style of decorations greeks used".
Or now that I think about it a bit more and saw the picture you shown, more likely a budget decision. Copypasting some generic already-made decorations into the texture is much quicker, simpler and cheaper than trying to source and/or recreate and/or arrange an actual painting-like scene for each and every one of those.
And having just a few scenes repeating a lot would become very obvious to players very fast.
hey you who edited these videos please stop with the weird abrupt cuts. In part 1 and 2 I thought I misclicked and went to the end of the video by mistake until I realised it's just poor editing. And some things shown in "previously" in this video just wasn't there in part 1, what happened?
Can she pleaseee start a youtube channel where she plays this and just talks?
Those pots were actually cheap knockoffs from Java. That's why the patterning was wrong.
Please give this woman the game so she can play it herself and explain at her own pace
I wish she was playing it
Imagine if you are watching movie about ancient Greece, and beside you is that lady. LOL 😒
I could listen to this lady for hours. Too bad the video was made so poorly.
Although i get what shes saying about the pottery but what if she didnt know some of those pots that she thought was wrong could actually be true. And just none of it survived.
The guy should have just told her that you get more variety with simple reusable textures since you can't have million different motifs handpainted by artists like real pottery had.
He was ass at showing her what she wanted to see, he didn’t even use the camera mode
Didas kime phoreti
