George slowly realizing he actually wanted to be a historian instead of a games journalist
He did actually mention something like that on the dad and sons
Which coincides with another channel I like: KnowledgeHub realized they wanted to be a games journalist instead of a historian.
Thats what happens to most e-celebs, they usually get burned out doing the thing they are passionate about.
It's great how he uses video games to contextualize history lessons though adding to the games his talking about while actually educating you
That’s just being a journalist but with hindsight
Alternate video title: George gets to write off his greece vacation as a business expense.

There's something poetically beautiful about a temple dedicated to the god of blacksmith and craftsmanship being one of a few intacted buildings since ancient times.
true craftsmanship
Nothing is intact. Everything goes through layers of history, habits, visions, destruction, editing...
Actually this is the dna of Heritage.
If only architecture was still this beautiful alongside the white cities visions of the future for advanced civilizations type 2. The grandest in the apex of our glory. A lot better than just living in what can be compared to boxes.
Thats exactly what i thought when i stood in front of it.. by far in the best shape than any other ancient greek temple in athens
I know right. That's all I thought about when he mentioned it was still standing
I'm sure lining up all these shots were equally satisfying and irritating.
Haha

omg hi legend
As a teacher of ancient history, I'm very, very grateful for this video.
You might be interested in the Discovery Tour mode of this game:
ua-cam.com/video/uh4Iy-p943M/v-deo.html
No combat, no story, no quests, just the entire game world to explore with short narrated tours covering landmarks, history and daily life.
It's also available in video form, which is perhaps more suitable for the classroom:
ua-cam.com/video/y8rcx4yuqOQ/v-deo.html
The previous game, set in Ancient Egypt, also has this mode (even as a standalone game). It's absolutely delightful. It not only touches on historical aspects, but also mentions where real-life and game differ.
If you haven't seen the last video George did on History Games, I highly recommend it.
What time periods exactly do you teach?
Unfortunately the ancient history taught in schools is utter horseshit. Its political history, not actual history.
Its laughable that they teach that Rome and Greece are the foundations of European civilisation, when in fact the greeks and romans just inherited slavic cultures. Greeks only been in "Greece" since 800BC.
Serbia, the Serbian language and culture is where all the answers lie.
@@borisfrlic Huh? That's a joke right? Or some alternate history by u? Slavs did not exist in ancient times the only arrived in Europe in Mediaval times around 5th century and later on 9th century they adopted Roman Catholicism and Byzantium Orthodoxy from Greeks.
This is history, what you say about Romans and Greeks inherited slavic cultures they did not even exist at the time and when they did it was the other way around.
Read real history.
The editing in this is immaculate
Born and raised in Athens, when young the school bus would pass through a ring road that gave you direct view of the Acropolis hill. We liked it but, as you do, took the view for granted and got on with our lives. When 18 I visited the actual hill for the first time in my life. Yes I know right? Well, what I didn’t know was that just the scale of things (when passing through the Propylaia to get to the Parthenon) would make my jaw drop. Lesson of that day: never underestimate the beauty of things you would, otherwise, take for granted in your everyday life. I was blessed to have been born as a native to this city and I didn’t even know it.
+1
Wish i was born like you but sadly i was born in a small island surrounded by woods and mostly inhabitant.
Abdul Azmeer being born on a small island sounds awesome
I moved here. The history isnt lost on me. Every day I stand in amazement of exactly where I am.
I was in Athens 3 weeks ago, it was great. We had a view to the Acropolis from our balcony, beautiful....
As a Greek, I'm thoroughly impressed by the amount of work you put into this. Excellent job!
@jorgan Kharn Yes after our revolution what's your point here? Oh you're one of those who claims Greek history without evidence haha bye
@@apostolis07 Don’t all Europeans claim Greek history? We wuz Greeks and shiet brih.

Why do you have to be Greek to be impressed by the creators' work? Nobody cares if you're Greek or not. Just appreciate the video and move on.
You must reclaim Constantinople
This was amazing. Really shows how much I underestimate the crazy amount of hard work and research that goes into making a game like this.
So much media coverage of game companies acting sleazy makes you lose sight of the heart and soul developers put into their work.
Also a fantastic piece by George who put a lot of care into this video, as he does most of his work.
ASSASSINS CREED ODYESSEY IS MY FAVORITE 🤣😀
So much hard work they put in to destroy the lore and built the entire game around microtransactions
I feel like there's two sides to the AC series. 1 side is a dev team that is clearly passionate about history and recreating it in video game form. The other is a publisher who wants to push out yearly releases and monetise them as much as possible. I remember thinking it was ridiculous when I first read they were gonna make it annual back in 09. "How can you make such a detailed open world game in a year? AC isn't CoD." But they found a way by making the games as cookie cutter and formulaic as possible. Makes me wonder what would happen if Ubi just let the devs put out a high quality AC a couple times a generation, instead of forcing the annual schedule.
Still though, as repetitive as these games can get I'll buy one every few years when one piques my interest and it's always a solid 6-7/10 experience. I really don't get the hate these games get, they're mediocre, but the use of historical settings makes them a little more interesting than other annual releases. As much controversy as the microtransactions caused in the recent games, they're really a minor issue at best.
@@bigdawg9743 Just as a note - you know that different studios work on each game, so they actually do spend more than a year making them?
@@domantasl Yeah, I know they have a couple of teams working on them that they cycle between like CoD. Still though, the annual pace leads to alot of stagnation.
When I was really young, my dad had to travel to Italy for work purposes. At some point, even I spent a few months living with my parents there (although I don't really remember anything). Because of this, we have a lot of photography albums with pictures from famous cities of Italy like Rome, Venice, Florence, etc. When playing Assassin's Creed 2, my father looked at the TV and quickly said "Hey, I've been there before!" We spent an entire morning comparing places from Florence with the pictures we took there. I'm always really impressed with what Assassin's Creed does with reimagining those cities, it's incredible. Love the video!
Assassin's Creed Odyssey feels like i was time traveling to a live, breathing, beautiful Greece. Great game!

It will get even more prominent when virtual Reality becomes common place.
they will just get more and more realistic. You can nowadays just scan a lot of historical locations and it's possible to just put them in the with unreal5. no optimization required!

As an ancient and classical history nerd, I very much appreciate this
Check the book "The Art of Assassin's Creed Odyssey". No matter what the rest of the game is, the architecture, design and art side of the game was studied through and through with historians and specialists using ancient maps and everything available
they nailed the feeling of living in that world and even though not 100% accurate, the feeling and seeing those places in game was absolute bliss i mean, they went for the detail and i believed that im in greece at that time in history, fantastic thing, i hope that the next game whatever place it might be, will be as great as this was
Exactly what I felt when playing the game. I was constantly daydreaming about how it might have been like that.
Like, imagining the people building those places, and they wouldn't ever think that in 2000 years from then, people would be making interactive journeys/adventures based on their daily surroundings.
@@jorgechavezcolmenares1790 ohhh finally people who enjoyed playing like i did and i still do.

When I play these games, I wonder how would native people would feel to see ancient buildings from their country recreated.
For example, It must have feel awesome for a french to explore Notre Dame on 1700's while he/she walks by the cathedral on their daily life.

incredible video! as a Greek and a big fan of yours i must admit this video really touched me.your knowledge of ancient Greece is mindblowing and very admirable. keep up the excellent work!
AC Odyssey has done a brilliant job with ancient greece , including how it presents ancient personalities such as Sokrates and Perikles.
However , the surroundings are indeed totally off , Delphi being the most obvious since it ruins the atmosphere , which in reality is breathtaking.
The fact ancient greeks decided to set the oracle there was not by accident.
Having visited all those sites , i totally recommened visiting Delphi for its amazing energy ( you have to go there to understand it ) and the Chariot racer statue.
The second best imo is the tomb of Philip in Vergina , because it never got vandalised and you can see literally everything our ancestors placed inside.
Makes you wonder how many more stories and wonderful sites lie hidden beneath the soil , maybe 1 day !
This is by far one of your best work this year George.
Living in a country next to Greece (Albania) I really love this country, especially its history due to a fact that I am a History freak. I love every ancient building there is. I still haven't had the chance to visit Greece, but I do have many relatives that live there.

I've clocked 138 hours in this game, and I just finished the main story. I'm *almost* done completing every little objective in the whole map, and I've walked most of it.
At one point I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things I felt I needed to do in the game and quit.
Eventually I came back to it because I felt bad for giving up and my completionist side yelled inside me to finish it. And so I took Kassandra in and adventure again. And what helped me this time was to take my time and enjoy the view, and damn if the view wasn't amazing! Everywhere you look the game feels alive, from the cities crowded with people that mind their own business (the kids playing on one side, the group of people discussing between them, someone painting, another one working with stone, etc) to the fields brimming with flora and fauna, travelers who stop to mourn their friend, who was just killed by a bear... Breathtaking.
Even with the obvious differences compared to the real thing, the astounding work these people put in the game shows everywhere. Thanks for doing this video, helped my wife and me to appreciate more such labor. Kudos to you.
shit, it took me 215 hours (main game, all the dlcs) and I still have 3 little regions left on the main map to complete.
Probably because I play on the max difficulty, which can be a horrible nightmare for most parts of the game :D I still remember the Minotaur fight... I wasnt ready...
A lovely comment and I couldn't agree more!
Antonio Francisco Magaña Gómez the entire game is copied and pasted
@@Sevren_ you're stupid.
Same! I rushed through as Alexios, And now as Kassandra I’m really going slow, taking my time, and choosing where i want my story to go, while really stopping to look at everyplace I’m at. Trying to learn all of Athens so I can walk it like a normal street, etc. So much good about this game. And this video just makes it even more mind blowing
Beautiful camera work both in game and out. Greece is amazing and whether it's from one guy with a camera or from 36 ubisoft studios, it's worth seeing.
The whole time I was playing Odyssey I didn't realize how much I wanted this video.
After playing the game I thought to myself “ wow does greece actually looks like this?” I found out it did and now I decided to move there when I retire
Can we all just sit back and truly appreciate the time it must have taken to get these shots to match up??
Verrrrrrry niiiiiiiice.
Thank you for this! I recently visited Athens, a few months after playing Odyssey and when I was there I was thinking of comparisons of the game's environments to its real life counterparts. The effort put into the architecture and to match it up closely to how it would've been in those times are incredible.
I can't believe they actually turned AC Odyssey into a real country. It goes to show the length these developers will go to make their games truly immersive.
I've been playing this game since the debut of quarantine, I find it to be beautiful and was really impressed with how it looked to be set in Ancient Greece. This video blows my mind! Great work, thanks for making this! :)
Excellent video, just unbelievably informative and beautiful!
I took a trip to Greece with my family several years ago and got to visit all of these sites. It really brought back some great memories seeing them presented like this. Thank you so much!
Love how most of these amazing buildings still have at least some of their old glory, and their restoring some!

One of the things I love most about Assassin's Creed was how we could wander through the past civilization and learn how they lived at that time. It was as like we have a time machine, amazing team of developers who made this game real
this was a relaxing watch. no ranting. the music and editing helped. thanks for this video.
I love this because ive been to the parthenon in Athens many times and the temple of posidon further South.
Gameplay is repetitive but having a really large bright 4k TV and surround sound made this game into a legit experience for me. Seeing all the little torches light up during the night over the Greek islands with the music softly playing is so emotive. Having the meat of the real history to dive into makes it a great piece of edutainment as well.
As a Greek who has visited a lot of ancient sites in the country, I was impressed to see the work done by Ubisoft! Not only that, but the landscape and the language made me feel like I was actually in my home country!
AC Odyssey might not what I would considered a good RPG game or a good "Assassin's Creed" game for that matter, but there is no denying that it has an amazing historical environment & lanscape locations, just like AC Origins.
Tbh I wouldn't consider assassin's creed odyssey a good game but the sheer labour and effort put into the world is awe inspiring
AC Odyssey is the best of the franchise.
1- Odyssey
2 - Origins
3 - AC II
Yeah but just the environment, the rest is so historically inaccurate that really makes me cringe like the warrior women(particularly funny are the Athenian ones) or the ridiculous armors and weapons.
The Loner Odyssey has the weakest and has the most cringy dialogue
Bro this is a 1:1 comparison. The camera angling too is spot on. Great job!
George is going through hardcore history phase, and I'm really digging it.

Love this video game appreciation thing thats going on. You could never make enough videos that truly recognises the amount of work that goes into making a video game, let alone a triple A one. Good work.
13:30 That was absolutely the best part of going to Greece! You can immediately understand why it became a sacred location when you get that amazing view.
Now that's its been a while, do you feel often people are too hard on the Assassin's Creed franchise?
Assassin's creed has definitely lost its touch, but I do think people are too hard on it, sure the new ones aren't as good the old ones but the amount of effort ubisoft put to make these places thrive is absolutely great, love exploring assassin's creed just to take in the sights haha
Greece is holy ground! So much history on every rock and specks of dirt. The best of humanity sprang forth from mother Greece.
I haven't played too many games, but visually this was one of my favorite open worlds to explore.
Here I am studying for my Greek exam and then I see George upload this, thank you for the unintended review session.
Chill, historical and informitive.
So nice seeing my history loved and researched with such respect, amazing work George!
My God! Did I just stumble on the greatest video in UA-cam or what? Incredible comparisons. I mean I imagined AC Odyssey was shrunk, but I didn't imagine someone can accurately describe by how much and where exactly, I am absolutely mind blown. Amazing work, thank you very much for this video!
Athens is one of the best cities I ever visited. Great food for the stomach, great knowledge for the mind, great walks for the body. I might have to play this game for a holiday in 2020.
This aged badly
As someone who STUDIED ARCHEOLOGY in university and also loved this game (I spent a few hundreds hours in the game) I have to say: I LOVE YOU, GEORGE! Thanks for this video
Hmmm, seems like a clever way to travel to different countries. Nice
I can’t believe all that architecture and magnificent monuments are gone just like that, tell me it wouldn’t be amazing to go up a huge staircase and get to the amazing Temple of Athena
The stadium of Delphi, in the game, has a new temple construction ocurring by the Cult.
This is genuinely the best comparison video that I've seen on this game. Not only do you show damned glorious angles from both reality and the game, but the fact that you discuss the history and the scenery. Honestly, you should do all of their games - based on your ability to travel. Hell, I'd totally donate a 'Send Super Bunnyhop On A World-Game/Present-History Assassin's Creed Comparison Tour.' Incredible footage, also! Subscribed!
George, i'm finally watching this video as I am nearing the end of my journey in Assassin's Creed Odyssey. I gotta say, you called the shot you have gotten "breathtaking" and I wholeheartedly agree. This was an amazing extension of my journey through the game, and I sincerely thank you for making this video.
Andrew Mowbray I’m also watching this as I am near the end of the journey in game! I would actually like to visit Greece in a few years time and have a look at some of these locations. Pretty cool
also there is a hill next to acropolis called vrahakia where everyone drinks and smokes, you can find that place in the game
Did you go to Greece this year, SuperBunnyHop? We might have been in Greece at the same time. Don’t think i saw you though.
He just went a few weeks ago.
I don't know if somebody has already mentioned it in the comments but here you go: Athenians built The Long Walls (Makra Teixi) which were 6km long in order to connect the city of Athens with the harbour of Peiraus.
Of course in the game they are not that "long" but I didn't expect them to include them in the game.
Fun fact:
When Spartans invaded Athens, Athenians that lived in the city were able to hear the screams and pain of their brothers and sisters while they were being slaughtered by the Spartans in the harbour. Just imagine...
This isn't MGS content. Are you okay george?
Im surprised he didnt touch dat much about death stranding...
This seriously took effort and time, job very well done sir!

Congrats, nice work. Very good documentary and comparison. I have visited Greece countless times and played the game to the fullest. I was also shocked by how they have represented Epidaurus, Corinth and, especially, Thera (Santorini), how it should have been in a time closer to the huge explosion that blown the island causing the extinction of a whole civilization. You remove all new constructions from the island, add a few more ruins, and very likely, it could have been like how it is depicted in the game 2400 years ago. Especial mention to the Thermophile Pass when the sea was closer to the mountains, narrowing the pass.
I love Greek history, loved Greece when I visited it, love AC Odyssey.
Greek history isnt even Greek, its slavic, the Austro-Hungary just re-wrote it and handed it to the greeks because they needed to have the slavic people's regarded as "not native" to the balkans so they would have a historical right to colonise us and germanise us.
Greeks took on slavic culture to a tee. Even their alphabet comes from ours.
Care to explain how the Battle of Marathon, the Pelopenisan War, Periclean democracy are all really Slavic history?

It's always interesting to think about how such grand ancient civilizations like Greece and Rome are much more advanced than some later ones like the Vikings or Anglo Saxons.
Modern society is still at an infancy when compared to the thousands of years that other civilizations endured. Who's to say how long this one lasts before another takes its place?
Vikings should've used stone for their buildings :D Though you do need a lot of infrastructure to build large temples like these

ODYSSEY is my favorite and damn! I didn't know there were so much attention to detail in the game! Ubisoft Quebec were crazy about this! Huge props to them!
What made me feel the "phantom familiarity" the most, was riding through the countryside between settlements. The colours, the vegetation, the shade of the sky and most importantly the background sounds, like crickets and chirping birds, made me feel like I left the house to go for a walk. From the mountainous forrests of Phokis and Makedonia to the dry golden grass on Crete, it is amazing how the managed to make the environment of a game make me feel like home.
Cities and temples might not look exactly the same after the centuries, but the in-game nature looks like the real thing.
As a greek, I wanted to add that NPC dialogue ,for wich they noticeably used greek voice actors, and understanding the things being said, even if the language is different from today, added so much detail to the game. The (sometimes hilarious) comments or responses to things happening around them, added another perspective to the game.
My favorite phrase was from AC Origins: "ηλιθιότης ανθρώπων, ουκ πέρας έχει" (human stupidity has no limits). It sounds funny because of the difference in ancient and modern greek.
Long have I waited for this moment and now the gathering of Greek culture and civilization shall bring me entertainment.
well considering UBIsoft pretty much went over there with a few $100k worth of survey equipment and literally laser mapped everything in detail as they did in France and various other historical locations with their other games it's no surprise how accurate it is with a few artistic liberties taken here and there.
I'm presently in Athens this week and it's the second time I visit a location where the games I've played take places.
The first time it was in Venice, after playing AC II and now it's Athens. Same as Venice, when I'm walking on some places, especially with the San Marco Square for Venice and the Acropolis for Athens, I'm telling myself:
"Shit it's just like the game was! Like I've been here before."
Sometimes you just recognize a type of wall or statut, or column for example, but sometimes I don't know how to describe that, but it's just like if you recognize the vibration and a peculiar ambiance.
Very strange feeling, but amazing to live!

At last! A video in youtube where people KNOW what they are talking about. As young boy, whenever upset for whatever reason, I used to take a 15 minutes climb, running to the top of Lycabetus hill to look at the Parthenon, a view that had me instantly get calm, cheerful, strong, and ready again for anything. The experience of the Parthenon? A massive building with near colossal dimensioned columns which yet feels so ethereal and light that makes you think that it would rise up to the skies at any moment now. Do visit Athens to see the Parthenon, as a real compliment by Athens to the unpretentious Dorian Spartan aesthetics, it is really much, much more than the healing experience I describe here, a vision beyond any description.
