- An Archaeologist Reacts to Assassin's Creed Odyssey (Complete) | Cincinnati Art Museum
Kathleen Lynch from the University of Cincinnati's Classics Department joins us to look at Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
NOTE: Earlier uploads of parts 1 and 2 of this video were unfortunately cut-off suddenly at the end. This complete version combines both videos and the missing footage.
Part 1: • An Archaeologist React...
Part 2: • An Archaeologist React...
Kathleen was responding to a pre-recorded video that Russell made (before knowing what she would comment on), which is why it seems like he is rushing past things. We won't make that mistake again!
I would love to see more of her commenting the game!
Can hardly notice. This is awesome
Ah, that makes sense. Also, thanks for explaining!
Yeah would really like if she could see more of the game, recorded at a speed that gives her a chance to be more in depth & can really get a good look at everything. This would be a cool series!
Livestream
I really like how excited she gets when seeing certain things. I have a thousand hours into playing this game so far. People laugh when they ask how my day was and I reply "I spent some time visiting ancient Greece". I play games like this because I am disabled and rarely physically leave my small apartment. Thanks for making such a great game that allows me to continue being an adventurer.
When I pitched the game to some friends (during lockdown last year) I said: the game is great for this and this reason but it's also free vacation to Greece!
A thousand?????? Wow. I thought I was up there with 400 hours. This game is truly a dream for Ancient Greece lovers.
@@gold333 Thanks, funny thing is I knew absolutely nothing about Greek history when I started the game. Since then I have watched a ton of documentaries to better understand it. I am still amazed by things I see in the game.
Yeah it's an amazing game and in my opinion it's better than AC Valhalla
1000?!! So impressed!! I’m at 250 now and finishing up the last DLC. Then I’m gonna start over haha
As a ubisoft 3d artist i can confirm, we do a whole lot of research :)
You guys are amazing! Thank you and the team for providing us with such marvelous games!
Great job you guys have done, for bring us a vivid image of Ancient Greece and a wonderful travelling simulator.
It shows, it really does, thanks for all the fun!
Couldn't Ubisoft hire someone like her to go over the detials with the team?
And we LOVE you for it! :)
When I played Odyssey I always had my friend who is a Greek and Latin philologist explain things to me on Discord. He didn't know this game existed and when I told him I was playing a game on Ancient Greece he was SO interested. I showed him the game and he was absolutely amazed. He would ask me every now and then "where are you now?" and then he would tell me stories or myths about the places I was visiting in game. It was a cool experience haha
Whoa that's great! I wish I had that kind of experience, I just wondered about buildings.
God, I so envy that. That would be so awesome. I'm replaying Odyssey right now so I think I'm gonna have to start randomly pausing the game to look up myths and stories from whatever area I'm in at the moment. Still, it would be way cooler to hear it from a professional who knows all the nuances and reasons why some stories are more interesting or special than others and can filter them in that way.
@ The buildings are absolutely exceptional. I love the myths and stories from this era but say what you will about myths and stories, some of the major physical structures from the era still stand today (which is incredible in and of itself,) and still exist in modern life and affect modern people in the region, unlike a lot of the myths and stories-many of which, I'm sure, have been forgotten to time.
*+M M* I'm...jealous now, that sounds like a great experience!
You two could've, should've made a series of this, posted it, monetized it, etc.
@@CNSninja read Pausanias as you visit these places. The game really needs to be played with a tablet and wikipedia next to it
Being an archaeologist myself, and History nerd in general, and having played Assassin's Creed since the very first one, Origins and Odyssey blew me away. The detail is just nuts, and the overall accuracy shows a lot of historical research went into this (Hollywood take a note on how it's done).
I wish they hadn't dropped the ball so hard on weapons and armour, though... it's a pity, especially in those two games and in Valhalla.
@@martinvranovsky7085 I guess these 3 last games do put much more emphasis on fighting than previously on the franchise, rather than stealth. Good point!
Odyssey feels very Hollywood
Just visit in game Crete, the lack of detail and historical accuracy will blow you right back.
@@martinvranovsky7085 Valhalla is a total shit show when it comes to accuracy from every perspective.
Seeing people talk about things that they're so passionate and excited about makes the happy chemicals in my brain explode
It would be great to have like an archaeologist commentary that you could switch on while playing the game.
Theres the tour mode, though im not sure what its like vs just playing the game
There's tour mode. It drops you in one location, gives you the path to follow with several interactive points along the path where they give you the explanation.
There's probably dozens of tour paths in the game located all over Greece.
It's very much like a virtual museum.
The discovery tour mode blew me away. I kept thinking how I would have loved that in college and what a great time we are living in that today's students have resources like that
@@Gigi-fv9ky When they introduced Discovery Tour Mode in Origins I fell in love with it. Ubisoft could have their research team dedicate to making this kind of virtual tours to make History classes 1000x more interesting
That's what the discovery mode is for. Although you don't get an archeologist, you get a Greek scholar to explain everything all over the map, and the entire map is open from the beginning for fast travel.
I would definitely watch more of her commenting on Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. (Especially if you dropped a note to Russell to not rush by or look away from something she's commenting on. It'd be even better if Kathleen could drive, but I'll understand if she doesn't quite feel comfortable moving with the controller.)
Keyboard and mouse, five minutes to learn, and then she can go on the discovery tour and explain us stuff.
yeah, make her a tour guide... who knows she might know a secret passage!
This was really intresting! But imagine her playing the game, it would take her probably 1000 hours to finish the main story lol
I was a classics major and put 180 hours in exploring before I got bored with repetitive tasks. This makes me want to play again.
Lol - I’ve never been a gamer, but at 45 years old, I just started this today. I’m blown away, I have to say. I have only done the Acropolis tour that they go through in this video, that’s it. But it says it should take 20-25 mins. It took me 95 mins because I wanted to stop and look at everything. Got a feeling the game will take me 180hrs instead of 60 😂
Make more videos with her or other specialists walking through different locations & islands in the game.
I agree, would definitely watch more.
@@andyvale2467 another vote for more Kathleen Lynch
I love how excited she is :) history is her passion that's for sure
Odyssey was the first Assasin's Creed game I played and I LOVED how historically accurate the game is. It would be awesome to have more of these walkthrough videos for different locations with an archaeologist.
@onoma eponimo tell me you don't know how to spell and subsequently make a logical argument without telling me you can't spell and subsequently make a logical argument.
@onoma eponimo Hey man. If you want to argue that the game is not historically accurate at all, that’s fine. Go ahead and tell us why you think so. But don’t get butthurt when someone calls you out for being a troll in the first place. Take care man.
@onoma eponimo lol. How old are you, friend, that you've managed to learn sooo much history but still can't spell for shite? I'll wait ;)
@@matthewsharayko7463 I think he/she was trying to say that it is not historically accurate due to the main character having super powers and some characters that don’t exist but hey this is at least the MOST accurate we can have so I’m not complaining.
@@gray2865 Maybe, lol. But it goes without saying that nothing in this video is reacting to superpowers or fictional characters. It's about the buildings, plants, artwork, clothing-things that would have required historical research to replicate in a video game.
One of the most beautiful games I have ever played!
same here!
Play Witcher 3
I agree, now I thought the same when I played origins (Egypt has always been a fascination of mine, never Greece). But definitely Greece was beautifully recreated.
@@lakhjeetsinghbadesha4654 TW3 doesn't compare, unfortunately.
@@devnull5098 lol I beg to differ, each to their own I guess. Odyssey does do a great job of recreating Ancient Greece and is very well done in terms of being historically accurate (as mentioned in this video), but it lacks depth outside the main story though and doesn't have that same 'atmosphere' as in TW3. But I guess it's down to personal opinion.
Kathleen said that she really needs to see more.
SO SHOW HER MORE!! (and then show it to us)
Thank you very much for the video.
I need to see the reaction of her friend seeing his dissertation work in a best selling video game, if he doesn't already know.
If you find it, lmk =D
They should redo this with live game play, allowing her to take her time explaining things...
if she has the time, they could make this into a series...there is so much history in this game and I would love to her commentary on it.
Better yet, give her the controller and let her explore at her own pace and explain as she goes along. And if they’re showing her the game on a save that has everything unlocked, maybe let her customize Alexios/Kassandra’s outfit.
@@wontonjon7041 Giving her the controller may not be a good idea. Some people are so disconnected from video games that they can't even walk and look around correctly
This is it
That is live gameplay
The lore of the Assassin's Creed games are that the player is "experiencing" the world via their ancestor's point of view through mitochondria memory accessed by a fictional device call the Animus. I like to think the "Disney" view of the worlds, the inaccuracies and compressed timelines are caused by memory bleed from all the other data stored in our mitochondria through the millennia. It helps with immersion and fills the gaps and supports the presence of some of the fantastical creatures in some of the games etc. Just my humble opinion. I'd be elated if I were a historian to see the ancient world as it might have been, in such detail and care.
For me, however, the whole "blood memory" aspect only kills the immersion, but at least Origins and Odyssey gave up on constantly reminding you that you are not playing a game, but playing a character playing a game... All I want is a holodeck, I need no ancient mystery nonsense.
@@gorazdvahen492 You're the first person who I've seen that says the "present-day Animus sections" are killing the immersion lol. I would assume you prefer the open-world RPGs over the linear storylined AC games from the past? I prefer a little bit of both ngl. Ive also liked games like AC 2 and I've also liked the evolution towards Valhalla type gameplay so it's just the lore that I generally care about in the end anyway.
@@dybiosol I agree with you, a little bit of both would be ideal. But IMO the lore is more important and the identity of AC games, although Odyssey complete threw that out the window
@@dybiosol I'd much prefer that they'd do away with all the futuristic nonsense and just let us, for example, play an Assassins during the crusades or a viking raider during the 800's. I also think that it kills the immersion, but also adds nothing to the overall story or game.
That being said, I still enjoyed Valhalla a lot and I'm currently playing Origins, which seems to be really good as well.
@@dybiosol It is a personal preference, of course. I for one find that playing as Bayek for several hours and then suddenly playing as Layla and finding his grave breaks the immersion somewhat. Still better than in previous games, but still tedious and irrelevant. When I played Horizon Zero Dawn it never switched to another time when another character is experiencing Aloy's story through some "blood memory". But as I said, it is personal preference. Me, I just want the time travel. I bought Unity on sale and ignore the story, I just walk through the revolutionary Paris...
Give 10 hours of this immediately, this was amazing!!
i thought for sure as the colossal athena statue was coming into view she would laugh at how ridiculously exaggerated it was, but no! that thing actually existed. please make more odyssey videos with her
I went to the Archaeological Museum of Kalymnos. One of the exhibits is a bronze foot and leg and I was shocked at its size and detail. Out of hundreds of museums I have been to, it is the one exhibit I remember.
This was amazing. Please call Kathleen again to react to the Atlantis and Elysium DLCs too. We would pick the fantasy fan part of her, and see how she could criticize this imaginative part of the game, too. Very instructional video here. Thanks.
I would love to see her reaction to Atlantis!
those DLCs were freaking terrible sci-fi shit.
@@derek400004 Its a matter of taste, friend. I liked it, so... what if she wants to react to that to? Skip that one video, and move on with your life.
@@derek400004 what a fucking manchiild 😂😂😂

One of my favorite game and an archaelogist is commenting?!
THANK YOU SO MUCH CINCINNATI ART MUSEUM!!
For people that say video games aren't enriching, this game inspired me to go on a massive Greek history trip on UA-cam. I knew next to nothing about Greek history before. That, in turn, inspired me to learn more ancient history, another topic I knew very little about. It's been about a year and I'm still learning tons about the bronze age people's of the world. Thanks AC Odyssey.
This is really cool to have an actually person who has knowledge of what it was actually like in real life. They did a pretty good job by the sounds of it!
I am a gamer first and a very low key history enthusiast. Odyssey and Origins blow my mind, I can’t wait to see what comes next. Thanks for doing this video, I enjoyed it. It seems like you two enjoyed making it too.
You know, if they had someone like her working with the programmers and modelers to make a "game" which was just an accurate model of Athens or Rome or Thebes, and all you did was explore it with her commentary behind it, I'd pay $60 for it.
this is a genuinely brilliant idea for a game mode. i'd pay $60 for just that DLC, lol
That's pretty much what the Discovery Tour mode is, which you can also get separately if you don't care about the rest of the game. ua-cam.com/video/uh4Iy-p943M/v-deo.html
I am obsessed with this. It’s so interesting! I now need a series of archeologists explaining every single assassins creed game to me.
I'd love to watch her play a discovery tour mode session or something. It'd be really nice to see her just wander around and talk about things that appear.
There is a tour mode in the game named Discovery Tour, they should try it in this format and make more videos like this. It would be awesome to see that.
Yes! Scrolled too much for this. Discovery tour is also for Egypt in AC Origins
hearing her talking about the whole thing feels like actually hearing an ancient greek person that was frozen in time and asked to recall her home. respect for these scholars
Assassins Creed is an incredible series. Odyssey really got my into the series, more than any other game. And now I play Valhalla and I'm blown away by it as well. I can't wait for the next!
I want more episodes with her, i really appreciate this kind of video on youtube
I wish I could either watch her play the game or play it with her near me, so she’d point out all historical stuff to me. It’s so interesting. I love Greek mythology
Being a Athenian myself, I was really interested in this. Amazing job has been done, and research, yes. If someone wanted to nit-pick on certain details - or maybe not-so-small details - you could find a lot of errors in the depiction of ancient Athens in the game. Then again, there's some amazing correct details as well, far more than the erroneous ones. Myself I'd say its way more than what I expected in game depicting a historical site/era - I expected more fantasy than actual reality. Instead we got this. Incredible stuff.
Show her the palace of Knossos and the underwater minoan ruins,to see what the woman knows about them!
Nice pp
The woman
Pretty sure, she'd know that no palace would have been visible, due to the polis of Knossos beeing right on top.
I'm sure "the woman" would know more than enough.
They did a very good job in general but not for knossos
Great takes. She should get her own UA-cam channel.
Please more of this. I love history and I've always been fascinated with experts takes on these historical places in video games.
gotta just love her enthusiasm. these videos are rad you guys at the museum should make it into a series.
What a joy to hear such an expert comment on this with such enthusiasm for her subject of expertise and for sharing her knowledge. I would watch a whole series of this. Yes I agree with your comment that it would be preferable to have her comment as you walk through so that you can pause on what she is discussing. It would be easier to learn from and allow her or other experts to really expand on the topics. Wonderful tool for teaching my students. Please consider doing more. Many thanks.
Great video! I just found the original two-parter today and was bummed that it cut off like it did, so this is amazing to see in full. Thank you!
I would be curious to see experts experience the Discovery Mode titles for Origins and Odyssey - both of these were created for the purposes of teaching actual history through gameplay, unlike the main games, which - as you have correctly noticed - get inspired a lot from actual research, but take liberties here and there.
I absolutely LOVED this!! How cool! It’s my favourite game for a billion reasons and it’s great to hear an educated and excited mind speak about these things. I would LOVE to see a longer version. Perhaps a live stream? Thank you for doing this!!
the templars are looking for you lady... you know to much
ahhahahahhhahaanahahahah
'she is dangerous..she will get in our way..she must be a spartan agent..we will send two lvl 99 merchs after her'
So many accurate details that most players just run past as quickly as possible, chasing our quest markers. This video made me re-appreciate all the artwork.
The crazy part is this is just a fraction of the amount of detail and cities. Would love to see more of other locations.
It must be such a tender experience to see the subject of your work brought to life in such incredible detail, and to be able to run around through it like a giant sandbox. I wonder if it would make you feel closer to the subject matter to get to experience it that way.
I was a classics major and Odyssey blew me away from that perspective. Also, the water is gorgeous as is the other scenery. I loved that they have a discovery feature outside the game. I appreciate this video because after playing the game for 180 hours , I had gotten so bored with the repetitive tasks, every tomb/fort being similar, that I forgot just how amazing everything else was. Hopefully she got to see more of it, maybe on her own, as ther is so much to see, including Knossos, etc.
You need to show them Olympia, one of the best cities in the game imo.
This video is wholesome. Love this. Muchos respect to the Devs and artists of Odyssey. The hidden geniuses
I want more of this! I love hearing about the historical accuracies and inaccuracies of games. It's cool to think we can explore a place as it existed thousands of years ago.
This game is three years old, and I still play it. I don't care that most of the live-service game is just weekly fetch quests post-main story. I just love living in Classical Greece. The ocean is gorgeous, Athens is stunning, Sparta is mind-blowing, and the temple of Artemis takes me beyond tears (Artemis is my girl). I could ramble for hours about everything I love about this game, but I'll stop this comment now. Look on the bright side, you now have another point in the UA-cam algorithm. lol
you got it :)
this is the coolest video I've ever seen I could watch her talk about this virtual world and pick it apart for hours PLEASE MAKE ANOTHER LONGER ONE
For me Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a piece of art. Absolutely gorgeous landscape. The amount of effort the developers do to put in the details, you can never appreciate them enough. I haven't had the chance to play AC Valhalla, I'm sure it must be equally gorgeous if not better. While playing Odyssey I wonder what happened to all these huge statues and buildings and weapons. Why have most of them disappeared without a trace!?
Experts critique historical games. Brilliant! She was fab and so informative. I'm also pleased to know that when playing these games I'm also learning history.
say whatever you want to Odyssey but this is a work of art
I'm really loving this game. I been in Greece two times for holidays, love the country and people, they are fantastic. And the greek history is really great and important.
So i am playing this game recently and..wow.. unbelievable.
Great video thanks!
now i want to play back Odyssey just to really looks into all those arts & scuptures!
Great premise for a video! Hope you do more like this, she was awesome! I don't remember if Odessy had the option but origins has the museum/exploration option. Seeing experts go into more detail or summarize those or confirm it would be fun to watch. Thanks again to both of you for doing this!
I’m playing the game for the first time right now. This sort of content is awesome. I can’t believe the went through the work to add so much detail!
They did, but as she points out much of if it inaccurate, or put in the wrong places.
The best part of this video is not her knowledge on ancient Greek archaeology, but the energy and pure joy when she shows.
This was the first of the series I played and I got it because I've studied so much about ancient Greece. It really helped visualize what that world could have looked like. It also sort of hit home how Classical Greece was built on the ruins of another mega-building civilization, the Mycenaeans, as you could see ruins everywhere you went in the game.
This is what it looks like when someone loves the job that they do. The world would have been a better place if more people were genuinely excited about their profession like she is. Very much enjoyed this video.
AC Odissey brought me and my family visiting Greece a few times. I loved the effort the developers put in the constrution of this huge open world game. No matter how precise are the details of the architecture, from the visual part is the best game ever. It is an amazing journey to ancient greece.
Things learned: Greek ampitheaters were polygonal & wood seated not rounded. Athena statue acted as a bank. Alexander turned the religious buildings into a triumphal arch of sorts, possibly inspiring Romans. Pots had paintings not simple repetitive decorations. Kickwheels were in common use. Paintings were on wooden panels not on stone, and none survived, and would have had multiple ground lines like medieval tapestry. Meat may have been only from sacrifice up until near this period. Romans put swirltchback ramps in to replace Greek straight ramps. Modern Greek has more "e" less "oi" sounds. Athena's bronze helmet acted as a lighthouse of sorts.
This was really enjoyable, I adore the details in these games and it's great to learn about the work that went into them.
How infectious is Kathleen Lynchs enthusiasm, I loved this, thank you.
She was so excited, and this video was so much fun to watch, and learn at the same time. Nice work guys, and thank you for that
"where we begin does not define who we will become" - a life lesson if there ever was one.
This should be a live stream. Could listen to this lady for hours. Love it!
I just finished Odyssey and can attest to everything they are talking about. But before playing Odyssey I played AC-Valhalla. I have a Masters in Computer Science (so I get the video game part), but I have a minor in history so playing games like this is my fun wheel house. Plus I also visited Athens, Rhodes, Crete and Santorini (Thera) back in 2005 so it was amazing to see places I've actually walked before.
Also my wife and I had just finished watching all the seasons of The Last Kingdom and Valhalla did an amazing job tying history into that game and the 9th century early England. These games are truly amazing and a great way to experience history.
Agree and I don't understand the criticism towards Valhalla the only thing I found lacking in that game was the protagonist didn't have a proper viking armor.
OMG I didn't know I have been waiting to see the hard work of the designers being validated. SO so so happy.
As a historian can I love this 10,000,000,000 times? Even if I don’t agree with everything?
I love the excitement she’s exhibiting seeing all of this reconstruction of the places she knows so well. It’s part of the reason I love the Assassin’s Creed franchises, I get to visit historic places and see it animated as it might have really happened. He joy pulls us in. To have a someone that knows the period and places says it’s really accurate and cool. Someone did some major research for all theses games to get it and we the fans appreciate it. Thanks for the video.
Please make more! This was fascinating - her passion is contagious!
More of this sort of thing please. Seeing non-video game people reacting joyfully to the unique things they can bring to the wider culture - mmwaa, chef's kiss!
It would have been great to have her comment on other locations, like Olympia, Mykonos and, of course, *Knossos.*
It is unbelievable tho
The detail put into this game
The hours and hours of detail, hard work and yet people STILL complain
This game is INCREDIBLE and there’s always something new to see
It’ll take a while to completely explore everything in the game
This is what a game should be
Worth every penny
so true there are always people who say bs about anything and most of the times they know nothing about what they are talking about. yes this game is fantastic.

This is such a cool video! I really appreciate y'all putting this together. I was a history major in college (found out about classical studies too late to get a degree in it) and the amount of detail they put into Odyssey's game environment is honestly my favorite part of this whole game. ❤️
This was really interesting, I would love to see a whole series of these videos. 👍
Fantastic. If you keep doing more Archaeologist reacts to Assassin Creed (do all games because they have amazing historical views) this channel WILL GROW.
I'd suggest having historians react to video games set in history, like a new series as such.
Heck, you guys should do an Archaeologist/Historian reacts to Total War and its newest titles - especially historical - like Total War Troy or Thrones of Britannia, Attila or Rome II
These video games make history popular. Your channel can serve as an intermediary with that by asking these experts in the historical field to react because these video game companies hire these exact experts for consultation on the historical accuracy for their games!
The fall into leaves (or flowers) is a staple of the AC games, the "Leap of Faith".
I'd love to have her as a guide while playing Odyssey again. My favorite AC so far and the input from her gives even more insight into the world.
Thank you so much for welcoming her to provide her scholarly and experiential insights. Assassin‘s Creed: Odyssey is my favorite open-world, RPG, and storyline game. It is immersive, so colorful, with superb characters, plot, arcs, and its influences my desire to visit and tour Greece!
Could've just uploaded this in the first place.
Yes, the part breaks in the two-part version are terrible.
Agree
most of the mistakes can be blamed on the process, so the confusion she has for objects being the right form but with the wrong color or surface or painting, those are entirely different steps during the development and are done by different people, add your usual communication problems and you get your mistakes.
Great video idea! Thanks for doing this. Cincinnati museum rocks!
Set around 431-422 BC during the Peloponnesian War. OK soo... @10:30 the "expert" states the painted pots wouldn't have looked like that, acting as if she was living in those exact times, she wasn't, she has studied some surviving artifacts and texts. Many historical texts only highlighted what he or she may have wanted to at the time, it's as if to say that she knows that only a limited amount of designs were used on pots as a fact, it's not, as a designer you just know that there's diversity, be it for pottery or painting a wall. Agreed that I also think that the game designers have done such an amazing job, and have captured the beauty of ancient Greece for this game, which was the main reason I purchased a PS4.
Awesome video and very informative. I think one of the main comments is that the design of the world is very accurate in some places and less so in others, especially when it comes to the many details. I believe that those are often conscious decisions by the design team to either make the world more colourful / lively, to present something the way the players would expect it or for various other reasons related to game design. For example the design on the outside of the amphora; most people have a fixed idea of what that would be and they don't know that they would have looked like in the specific period. Same for the sculptures outside at the top of the Parthenon(?). Here I believe it might have been a decision based on visuals. Making them "bronze" also makes them stand out more than if they had been marble and white which is similar to the background / rest of the building. So, just like in movies the designers sometimes make these decisions for game design purposes and other also other factors (like not breaking immersion, shock effect, storytelling purpose, etc).
as an artist I'm a big fan of AC Odyssey and AC Origins, I actually started to play Origins because of pyramid construction theories like the famous one of J-P Houdin (they actually incorporated some ideas of these into the game). Of course often scales are just not right or many details but it works as a game..eg in Odyssey, at Samos, the famous Heraion is great, huge, there you actually get a good glimpse of the monumental size of its real proportions. Today at the Heraion there is only ONE giant 10m column standing, and it is only HALF the original height, amazing. No wonder this is the blueprint for one of the seven wonders of the World ( temple of Artemis in Ephesos)...but again, all the islands are much to small (of course it must be walkable/playable)
The images applied on everything (texture images) take a lot of space and memory, so they have a limitation on how many you can use. That's why you see repeating patterns, paintings and motifs used on multiple assets. They often prefer abstract, geometric motives because they can reuse them on a variety of things.
Absolutely my favorite game. I have replayed more than any other game.
This was awesome!! I’ve never played Odyssey, but listening to Kathleen was incredibly informative and fun.
I'm just now seeing this video, but I want to beg you to do more with her and other experts in different historical fields. I could have watched her for two hours without being bored. Please consider bringing her and others back for gaming videos like this and make them as long as you can! Great job!
6:35 I bet, amongst other compromises with reality, one thought was "this is a real piece of a real art depicting some kind of a story in quite a detail... but its original placement is one that NO PLAYER EVER will even notice that it exists. Let's put it somewhere else, into more constrained space that the player needs to go through more slowly, so we give the piece of art a chance to be noticed and examined."
Would love to see her do some sort of playthrough of the tour mode or react to it, it's without combat so she can just walk around and look at historical sites or even do guided tours.
Man this is such a great idea! i loved it! please bring us more of her commenting the game or who knows other "experts commenting other installments of assassinscreed. They are all so much fun to play and a big part of it surely is the awe we all experience when seeing these buildings and details from another time in front of us.
Odyssey is definitely my favourite AC game.
Really really interesting video - thanks for creating and sharing this. More Odyssey content please!!
The devs actually explained the changes for example for the trails going to the Acropolis. It's a way to give more ways of exploiting parkour for the players and keep that aspect of the Assassin's Creed "universe". That's also why they kinda added a lot of mountains here and there depending on the geography. It's a way of keeping some aspects of the gameplay dynamic. These are not "mistakes", these are delibarate choices from the devs.
This is the kind of video I've been looking for.
Please get Kathleen to come back to look at more of Odyssey! I could literally watch this content for hours
Thank you for posting the whole video. i have been searching for it!
