There was another big Amos backstory hint in episode 3x3. Amos saies to Prax, "dying is the only way to get out of Baltimore". Prax "How did you get out". Amos "I died".
I mean he did fake his death, so that explains that
@@ChineduOpara expanse is a great show, that foreshadowing surprising plots for people like me who haven't read the books
When I was watching the episode I was thinking “Baltimore huh? Are they going to make a wire reference?” And sure enough!
Glad I am not the only one. Amos has been giving me Omar vibes from the season 2 - and it's not just because he is from Baltimore.
Wasn't young Amos sexually abused by "Johns"? That'd explain his extreme anger & violence.
Yes, he's said as much. I think it was when he was blinded?
It was even explained by lydia’s partner. Saying that he was only wanted when he was young. When he got too old he was utilised as a thug.
So he was raped and beaten as a kid. Then beat and killed people just to earn a living. Probably before he was even 16.
The guy is barely human. Because there’s certainly no humanity in what he’s experienced.
Hence why Erik was expecting Amos to walk over and rip his jaw from his face.
Because that’s all he knew how to do back when they were kids.
The fact Amos could understand that he was worth more then that and could just ask shocked Erik.
Showing the experiences with Holden and Alex and the rocinante are making him human.
@@jugganaut33 through the series, he has locked on to key people who do selfless things to create the beginnings of right, wrong, and an over all moral compass. he will always live in the grey in between, because sometimes he simply reacts unconsciously, sometimes its all reflex. and he has a good read on people and the level of threat they are likely. hes valuable as muscle, strategy, and someone to get hard jobs done, and if hes found someone to do the impossible along side, i think he bonds to them because it gives him some light in his dark ass world. personally, I love Amos, I would not hesitate to befriend him. ive known people similar to him. that come from war zones, that begin life in the worst places and sheer will moves them to better places. one friend from the Czech Rep. grew up mostly under soviet boots in Ukraine. he was forced to work in the factories. he said he worked in a steel mill, started at 14 when he was tall enough. hes built like a 6' tall vin diesel at his most muscular. even at 43 years old, his apartment has camping chairs and a couple of fold up tables for games or having a friend over to eat, a 50 inch tv on an arm in the main room, and another in his bedroom. the bedroom is a queen size bed, a night stand, a foot locker, and one side is lined with shelves of books in 3 languages, and the wall under and beside his tv is ammunition, his closet has a gun safe in it, and he has the papers for each gun to prove legal purchase. he loves america, he said if it came to war he would fight for america, because they let him in, said work hard, be smart and you can do well. he does. he works two jobs, and drinks a shot of vodka every year for his mother, and another for his father, on their birthdays. his sister is a citizen also, and is incredibly smart. shes got a degree in sports medicine, and shes also a specialized surgeon. shes one of the few women ive met that took me months to feel confident enough to talk with. shes also a heavy reader, and she lives in a large house with these siblings other sister, just in college, and their mothers parents. theyre more patriotic than most americans. they have the flag of their home country on a wall, but they have a game room that is as USA as can be. they have a lazer thing that draws and fills in a multi color american flag on the ceiling. i wish i could go visit them. great people, hard working and loving people. just dont try to hurt them or steal their hard earned anything!
@@jugganaut33 Amos is almost a sociopath. Almost. He understands that he is broken in a very deep and fundamental way so he does not trust himself to know the difference between right and wrong which is why he uses people he considers "good" (Naomi and Holden) as a surrogate for his own conscience. Except when he goes into survival mode. When in survival mode he will do anything to ensure the survival of himself and/or his friends. One thing that is very admirable about Amos is that he is completely 100% non-judgmental. People are who/what they are to him. He does not care why or how. You just are who you are.
@@jugganaut33 "Spoiler for novella "The Churn":***************************
Regarding the age, pretty sure it was mentioned in the novella that he was 15 turning 16, and already tall and muscular for his age, by the time he left Baltimore for good.
"The Churn" refers to the cycle of floating to the top, and sinking to the bottom, then back to the top. This because when you get close to the top, if you don't make it at the top, you sink down to the bottom. The Churn is a metaphor of the view of a person that doesn't make it to the top in the civilian world. its not about cops, its about the actual social structure of Earth. if you don't make it to the top, your stuck in the churn.
@@ChineduOpara This is a meaningless comment, there is no context.
@@ChineduOpara No, you posted no context for the word. yout 'guess what this means game', you can reserve for yourself. I am correct, you provided no context of the single word you posted. The non context word posting you submitted is also a mean to deny what you post. Hypocrite 101 class is in session for your comments to date.
@@ChineduOpara You can keep your 'I'm sorry for you' comment and 'it makes me sad for you' Your claiming you know better for me, is quit hypocritical; and proves my point. your one word 'comment' is a means to deny whatever you say. you can keep your passive/agressive comments to yourself. That is because your comments prove my point. You don't know better and keep your fake and passive/agressive comments to yourself. I cant stand religious and pious people like you with your holier than thou commentary. Oh yes, you will cry as a 'cry bully' does claiming victim. keep your self victimization to yourself.
@@ChineduOpara that was a very strange exchange.
Facts.
In the books Eric’s arm is deformed from a birth defect. He has a habit of opening and closing his “tiny fist” which Amos (Timmy) knows is a tell for inner anxiety and turmoil Eric is feeling.
I just reread The Churn and I was incorrect! Eric was abused so badly that his arm stopped growing.
I wanna see more of storyline where Amos asked the protomolecule infected scientist if people with no remorse or affect can be cured referring to himself while pretending to ask about the scientists
I would recommend The Churn to anyone who likes the show. The tone it sets is very different from anything else in the series, and it really goes above and beyond to show how absolutely fucked Earth is for most of the people living there. The oppressive feeling of despair and hopelessness is cranked up to 11 throughout, and nothing the show does really comes to close to showing just how trapped people are on Earth if they aren't among the lucky few who win the vocational training lottery or are selected for GEI, the governmental higher education program.
The Churn is probably my favourite of the novellas, maybe tied with Strange Dogs, but I like them both for different reasons. The Churn is just a great story all around, but Strange Dogs has the deep lore.
It's a bit disturbing that Timmy keeps souvenirs... Amos's name... Murty's bag... I always wondered about his chest pin...
You missed where Amos got his backpack from.
I loved that detail!
Target?
There was another pretty explicit hint about him being pimped before he got into the Apprentice program. I'm vaguely remembering it was Avarasala's comment commenting about how wearing flats didn't prepare her for zero-G magnetic boots and Amos comments it's not that different he's worn both.
"I didn't always work in space." Was his exact line. That made a strong impression on me.
I binged all the new episodes in one sitting. Great show. Glad it’s still going on.
The churn novella is fucking fantastic. It’s short and totally worth the read
The Only credible sci fi show!
Fact
I watched the first three episodes and I loved them a lot. Spoilers for episode 3 below
The ending for episode 3 made my jaw drop because usually whenever something bad is about to happen to earth in sci-fi, it is usually stopped. But no, earth gets hammered by the stealth asteroids. I was surprised that this happened.
"No pizza, only Khlav Kalash"
"No bowl; stick! Stick!"
Not Baltimore-related, but far and away the best Easter egg in Ep 2!
I always called my northern neighbors Baltimorons, but... That's just me.
Love the series and this video helps me understand more. Thanks!
What if grogu was eventually put in the hands of Admiral Thrawn?
@No U Let's find out.
I’m that Groguy.
I’m surprised that it didn’t get mentioned, but Baltimore has also given us such treasures as Divine and John Waters. Still a great episode, Ben- I finally got Amazon Prime and am currently up to Season 3 Episode 6. Watching it from your recommendation (as well as my older brother’s) and you were not wrong. It’s such a great show! Thanks, and I hope that you’re doing well-
Here's a subtle one:
Avasarala: "How do you know what's to walk in pumps?"
Amos: "I didn't always work in space"
Bring the Expanse content beratna! I've been patiently waiting with my hand on the airlock button...
I had to watch the churn before this video, and I can only do so at work (since my boss has amazon prime and I don't) but I gotta say Amos aka Timmy has always been my favorite character in The Expanse and now even more so
duuuuuuude The Expanse is back OMFG you must be walking on sunshine I'm so happy for you American Ben I Fuggin love The Expanse this series is one of those subjects where you truly shine I can't wait to see your expertise here. Ima watch your video but before I do I wanted to say duuuuude duuuuuuude The Expanse is back OMFG
Just finished the episodes so far and came back to see this. Great video thanks.
You ended with "If I missed anything..." so here we go:
Novels and the Novella notwithstanding, this video glosses over almost a decade of Timmy/Amos' life as inferred by show dialogue and Chatham's acting. Not to get gross, but iirc he explains how kids (like him) of prostitutes are exploited until they're "too old."
He also elaborates on his nightmares and mentions being kept in a basement early in the series. We watch his mind break on Ilus when he goes blind and the literal and metaphorical darkness overtakes him - almost killing Holden out of traumatized instinct.
When he teaches Avasarala to use MagBoots he compares them to wearing pumps. I doubt that happened after, as Charles observed, he started working muscle.
I'm guessing this was all omitted as an editorial choice motivated by maximized viewing, but his CPTSD is a cornerstone of his character.
His life didn't start at 9.
To be clear, I watched this to see if there was anything I missed.
If you're reading this, it's because you're as enthusiastic about the lore as I am.
Wes interpreted the character of Amos as not only traumatized, but on the autism spectrum and worked with behavioral psychologists to help his performance.
I encourage you to search for more, there's a terrific essay out there about visibility and representation.
Nice to learn more about this. I take it, info like Lydia sleeping with Amos was in the book as well as stuff on Eric?
Yep, all in the novella "The Churn" that Ben mentions
The one time i visited Baltimore a drunk as fuck, mostly toothless, homeless man got super pissed when i didnt give him change.
I'm late to the party, but this was great. You did your research
Wow! Regent Park, Toronto looks great in the future!
I guess they finially decided to save a few of the old bits.
I like how today's irl gentrification buildings comprised amos' Baltimore's slums
Thanks great stuff.
Hey American Ben for future Generation Films you’re should a Disney video. Discussion on a tragic character and explained backstory from from Wreck-It Ralph. That character is Sergeant. Her story tragic and twisted that changed her life.
Damn this clears up so much for real!
I feel like Amazon should have dropped these 3 episodes on the 21st instead of the day before Mandalorian season finale. I constantly promote this series to nerd friends and the one who watch it LOVE the show but getting them to watch is the struggle
Sounds like a real churn.
I know what you mean! I have had the same experience
I'm glad someone finally talked about Amos being molested by his mother. Maybe I wasn't paying attention but I don't remember Amos being used in the sex trade and it didn't seem like Amos had been a gangster for long.
He was used in a very disturbing, I mean EXTREMELY/ABSURDELY/HORRYFICLLY/BRUTALLY disturbing, sex trade thing, called "puppy knocking".
Amos describes it, when he explained why he beated the f*¢k out of the hacker that was trading canned chicken for the info on Prax's daughter, both in the show and in the book.
And, in that description, you realize that Amos's biological mother was, at the oldest, a PRE-TEEN.
Just let that sink in for a minute.
@@carloshenriquezimmer7543 I'm not surprised and they described sex as just a action and it doesn't involve love
There's nothing in the books or show that suggest Amos was molested by his mother. Lydia was not his mom, and Amos/Timothy was born into the sex trade and used by pedophiles starting when he was 5 or younger. Read The Churn.
Amos and American Ben a bromance across fictional time!
Nice! I'm looking forward to seeing more of these :) That stuff about Baltimore is kind of true. There are parts of it that are not so bad, and other parts that are better avoided. Honestly the comments were right, the worst part, in my opinion, is the traffic. It's hellish.
This episode was great but I'll admit I was expecting more flashbacks to Amos' childhood than we got. Perhaps we'll get more later on in the season.
Minor spoilers for the next few episodes below...
Maybe when Amos and Clarissa get trapped in the underground prison following the asteroid impact, we'll get flashbacks to Amos/Timmy being trapped in that basement he referenced last season, which was obviously a traumatic memory for him and might get triggered by being trapped again
Well, maybe Amos does decide to go off planet via Baltimore for some reason and that brings back more? (no spoilers)
❤️Murder Snuggles❤️
"So let me get this straight... Timmy would hang around the crap game, wait until the pot got big enough, then rip and run? Every time"
"When we'd catch him we'd beat his ass don't get me wrong but it never went further than that."
"If he did this every time, why'd you let him play?"
"Got to man, it's [THE UNITED NATIONS NORTH AMERICAN PROTECTORATE - BALTIMORE COMMERCE HUB]"
Kills one mob boss and assumes one identity and instead of handing him a tissue he's Amos Burton for life.
Sounds like he grew up on The Block....
If Baltimore was a beautiful city like New York in the expanse then it wouldn’t be Baltimore anymore
Please make top 5 bruh moments in science fiction
Did you see the cricket protein holographic advert on the building?
Amos is my favorite of the entire series, love everyone else but Amos is the best in my opinion
I love Amos. Didn't like him at first, as the spy said " knuckledragger" I assumed as well. But the reality, is that Amos really is the most clear headed " in the NOW" moment character. ( which, reminds me of Gust Avrakrados, in Charlie Wilsons War, about the " we'll see" story telling.) But, as far as Amos is concerned the most emotional I have seen him is during Prax.. " this is Amos, he is my best friend!" Amos, later repeats this. And Charles. He becomes most human with Charles. Thing is, I see Amos, very similar to Drummer. Hardened by the system, but not inhuman. And you see the self " re-wiring", not to become softer, just more...human. Gotta give credit to his actor as well. ( forgot his name. :( ) such a cool guy, and really has gone through great lengths to understand/become Amos. Much respect, with both actor, and character.
Good details of Amos' background. Thanks. American Band, ummmm, what is your real name?
American "Ben" 😁👋
please explain the tattoos on Amos's arm. Please explain the devil symbol, and the hebrew on his forearm. Is it explained in the books?
It's the actor's tattoos. I don't think it's a devil symbol but masonic.
@@louiscachet7681 No, it's not the actors tat, it's the characters. It's also a patch on uniforms and he has a pin of it on his own jumpsuit.
@@qontoh2s872 you're right, the devil tattoo and the pin are from the character
Already read The Churn.
And Lydia explains getting flirty with Christian
Just admit Ben...Your "Man Crush" for Amos goes way beyond the show....(It's Ok, we don't judge you)
I do worry for you Ben when they make a (porn) Parody of the Expanse. You'll rub yourself raw.
Take care....12 X's a week thinking about Amos should keep the chafing to a minimum. Grin<
I do appreciate your enthusiasm for the Expanse...(I can't afford A.Prime)... I live vicariously through you. (You do a Great Job)
Thank You
COVID TIME NOT WITHSTANDING, bALTIMORE HAS ITS GOOD SECTIONS AND BAD JUST LIKE ANY CITY. Federal Hill, Canton, Power Plant Live and Phells Point are scenic party sections. East Baltimore,West Baltimore, Morrel Park, Leakin Park are areas best left alone unless you want drugs or ilive there. The inner harbour could use a remodel as well, but Ive spent many incredible weekends at my ex's house in fed hill going to ravens/orioles games . Im just a white boy from the suburbs(glen burnie) but I love Baltimore and the Expanse!

Why does Eric have 2 motorcycles and only one hand?
He certainly has enough money. Why not get a prosthetic arm, it was the first thing that came to me🤨🤨
@@makisekurisu4674 Exactly!
@@brndesk So why anyone know, did the churn say anything??
A police state because of a single drone? Seriously? What was Eros? Or Ceres?
There was nothing shocking or surprising about Amos’ trip to earth so far.
It's just good back story. Hope he gets off Earth before another rock lands. I think the biggest shock is for Eric, who was expecting the worst from Amos, but recognizes that he's really changed.
@@artboymoy I haven’t read the books and I have Amos figured out (he’s kinda like the Jayne character of firefly) but yes seeing Eric’s face was a good scene. I was hoping they’d flashback to why he only had one hand thou
@@TheSkinnyMechanic Eric's been through alot. I don't need to know why he only has one hand. It looks like he was born that way, but still managed to make it to where he is without it. Nuff said.
@@TheSkinnyMechanic I love Jayne, but his life was a walk in the park to what Amos/Timmy went through. Amos/Timmy deserves all the good things.

The Necrons are on to something too.
Can you please do some videos on Raised By Wolves? Would be awesome to have you guys delve into it and provide your insights/wit on it
Cool.
Cool
Just saying Baltimore is not terrible. It's an American city. You can choose to see shit, greatness, or something in between. I choose to lean towards seeing its greatness in every neighborhood.
“Raised” isn’t exactly accurate.
Optics matter. Directionality is a false perspective rationalized by people who think that life is top or bottom, ruler or subject. The 'actual' truth is that life is about objectives. One can always find new emotional or economic lows, and new emotional and economic highs. One can be at their peak and feel miserable, or at their bottom and feel elation. The Churn is about Amos's personal rising and falling in relation to his objectives. The economics are a distraction, as they've always been. Overall a mediocre side story as Amos consistently fails to display objective goals, this explains his unending frustration and anger issues. Equally tragic is that I know a lot of people just like him, and they're Millennials.
Whoooooooooooooo!!!! Idk hello there
Really Baltimore is that bad go down to Detroit you'll see some real issues

Terrible video, lazy writing (going on many tangents), poor research (Amos literally says what "the churn" refers to in the episode and somehow this guy gets it wrong), and not insightful at all.
Ben you need to learn to get to the point of the video, dont need 1-2min of nonsense >:
You are too long winded .... get to the point
If your going to explain something do that ...dont spaz out .. dont try to sell me something !!

I believe...at this point..Amos and Camina Drummer are the only interesting characters in this series.
Amos backstory seem a lot more interesting than almost everything happening around it.
i wonder if british ben is going to bite the bullet and do a review of lower decks?
