  • Amos Burton is one of my favorite characters on The Expanse. His penchant for casual violence is gripping and fascinating. In Season 5’s first three episodes, we finally get some glimpses into Amos’ past which paint a picture of how he became the man he is. We learn a little about Lydia and we meet Amos’ old friend Erich but there is clearly a rich backstory that is only hinted at.
In this video, I recap Amos Burton’s full origin story from "The Churn", a novella by James S.A. Corey, author of The Expanse book series. We’ll also talk about how some of these experiences explain Amos’ behavior on the show.
Give it a watch and let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Amos' backstory in The Churn is just heartbreaking. And I found it was essential to understanding his character in The Expanse

Good review but with one mistake.
Amos is still outsourcing his moral compass in season 5. This time to Clarissa who tells him it was wrong to go out of their way to take the cabin and supplies. Amos realize he needs to get back to his crew because he still can't tell right from wrong, he only knows what is necessary to survive.

Definitely agree with your point. I put this video together before that episode came out but if I'd seen it at the time, I would have amended this review to point out that... although Amos is trying his best, he realizes that he still needs Holden & Co to help point him in the right direction.

Just binge-watched all six seasons. Man, this show was better than I'd hoped for.

Thank you for covering this series the way you do. Hopefully it will reach enough "posthumous" recognition that it will lead to the adaptation of the last 3 books. Eventually. In my life time lol

Thanks Alexandra! Lol I know, I'm ecstatic we're getting six seasons but I hate the idea of not finishing it out. If the series doesn't get saved, I may have to switch to making videos covering the book series instead of the show!

@@OneTakeVids I dare say there is justifiable hope that the remaining material will be adapted in some form later on. Alcon that own the rights were always fans of the material. Here is Alcon president saying last year that the series could get spinoffs and movies IF "this show's fanbase continues to accelerate the way we've seen over the last year" screenrant.com/the-expanse-spinoffs-movies/
Plus Ty called S6 a _pause_ not a cancelation. There are 2 recent interviews where he explains why:

      and
      www.polygon.com/platform/amp/2020/12/10/22167489/the-expanse-season-6-canceled-or-season-7-beyond-plans
Fellow youtuber Pete Peppers covered this in a video if you are curious. He did read all the books but there are no spoilers ua-cam.com/video/xXHajjDpA3Y/v-deo.html
VERY MILD SPOILER regarding the last 3 books. I mean, I don't think it's a spoiler but, anyway, it definitely explains part of the pickle they're in:
Between books 6 and 7 there is a 30 years time jump. Ageing the actors alone may cost more than it's worth and it could be w/ unconvincing end results. And doing away with said time jump it's impossible.

Thanks for doing this video. I didn't think I could comfortably read it given that it covers child trafficking and the less of that I read, the better, so I appreciated a summary.

This is my second comment on this video and I like Amos so much that i made a Pathfinder character just like him, including his need for guidance. Whether from "friends" or and enemy that charms him.

I don't think Tim/Amos outsources his moral compass as much as he has a limited capacity as far as creative problem solving goes. He's often presented with 2 bad choices & it never occurs to him to question that there might be more than just 2 options (kill or be killed, comply or die) That's why he is willing to follow & be loyal to people like Naomi, Holden & later Clarissa. They have the Emotional Intelligence he lacks & have more tools in their people skills box than just brute force. He's not stupid by any means. He's actually very logical & can think tactically under pressure, he's just very simple & direct & lives in the moment. Hence the "you're the man with a plan" comment. He's not a Big Picture guy & has no ambitions to be. Amos is loyal & protective & capable of great violence but he isn't malicious & he doesn't hold a grudge.

What Amos ends up becoming still blows my mind... and when you think about the one depicted in the books, well, he's just that regular guy... and OMFG :O
EDIT : read the books :)

I like the video really informative, but have you considered that Timothy is on the autism spectrum. It really makes sense for his character, the hyper logical thinking, quite but with extrema emotional outburst of violence but often for a greater propose to protect that he is loyal to. He takes almost everything in the literal sense, very knowledgeable about subjects of interest theses are all traits of someone of the autism spectrum, Which can also be exacerbated by early childhood trauma and abuse. I never made the connection until I heard the word Expanse and autism together then I was like oh yeah Amos is on the spectrum. I'm not sure if it has been confirmed with cannon in the books, but I believe Wes has said in a interview that he is play Amos as if he is. I think the big reason why it took me so long is that as good as Wes is the Eye contact is off but I understand that being a TV show framing and comp take priority.

I wanna say in Season 2, when dealing with the Protomolucle lone scientist, talking about the medical procedure to the right side of his brain. A large magnetic was applied to wipe out the emotion of Empathy (I thought that might have happened as well around age 5). Then later, Amos/Timothy explains how he knows how to deal think like a Pedophile. Crazy shit, all of it.

Its funny you mentioned earlier that Clorissa kills with impunity so you found her unsympathetic when she was troubled when she killed the engineer that was trying to train her . She was hurt emotionally before she put him in the wall.

I noticed this 'outsourcing of moral compass' with Naomi Nagata and then, as she proved to be dishonest from time to time, to James Holden.
