I start a new sketch book by not starting at the first page! Sometimes somewhere in the middle and when I know exactly what I want to do on the first page of when I'm confident about the sketch book I fill in the first page. My to to thing is handlettering.
When I was younger and I started my very first "sketchbooks" I was fear of first blank page, but not now. Now I ave two different types of "sketchbooks". First ones are very cheap notebooks with blank pages - there are for practise, quick sketches or note the ideas, and second ones are more like notebooks with finish and full drawings, have better and thicker paper etc. I never afraid of drawing in the first ones, because they are always messy and I never show them up. And I never afraid of drawing in the second ones, because if something will go wrong - I always can pull out messy page. But if I was fear of the first blank page, I would glue on them some pictures, which inspire me, art from my favourite artists or beautiful photos from newspapers. And now I must tell somthing about your art- your art is totally amazing! I love all these galaxy effects and little cute Star Wars landscapes.
These tips were not only super helpful, but also delivered in such a sweet and loving way! I just felt warm and fuzzy the whole time I was watching. :) Thank you for inspiring me, and for making this lovely video!
I don't have a problem with the first page but always when I'm about to finish my sketchbook. I like to fill my books til last page and it's super hard when you already have a new one waiting for you so you keep all good ideas for it and there's nothing left for the old one to just finish.
Holy shizzles!! I saw that Reylo fanart on tumblr and I didn't realise it was yours! (I didn't check the OP name) I've been subscribed to you for a really long time and this was such a pleasant surprise! I really love that piece because of the emotions it gave out to me (also because I'm Reylo trash). It was absolutely beautiful, keep up the great work (^ム^)
zyuqingz I try not to ship anyone anymore because it always sets me up for disappointment, but argh, TLJ made it REALLY hard not to ship those two haha XD
Thank you so much for all of these tipps! They helped me a lot, not only when it came to starting a new sketchbook but also when I had no idea what to draw in my already existing sketchbook. (and omg that FIATP symbol you have a great taste in music
This is a really helpful video, as an artist/aspiring one! I might try to use some of these as I start my next sketchbook (once I finish my newest one). Typically for when I start a new sketchbook, I try to draw whatever comes to mind at that point in time. Whether that be a random Pokémon or some character I wanted to get a feel of on paper, since I usually think of a character and write them out first. I feel the best tip I can give for starting a sketchbook, is just do whatever pops in your head! Sometimes it's best to just draw something off the top of your head, or jot down some notes and put a few doodles. Then again, you don't have to follow this idea if you don't want to. As long as you're happy with whatever you draw, that's all that matters!
Wow! Not only are these all very helpful and lovely suggestions, but your art is incredible! Very useful video and made even better with the amazing visuals
Thank you so much for the tips! :) Sometimes I feel really down looking at some of my works, but then as you said, if you've an art piece you like in the beginning of your sketchbook it reminds you you're worth it and gives you motivation! :)
omg i am so impressed and no wonder you have confidance and couradge to show us ur artwork they are more then a good technique, each peace is so different and this diversity in your other videos, omg u don't stick to one medium and thus you are growing and progressing in every direction which is amazing, i wonder what is your approach on character developlment, would love to hear some thought cuz many begginers like me tend to draw "super cool" designs that seems extra and accessories are ofthen useless, even if we draw fantasy it should make sense in it's own way i feel.
When starting a sketchbook I never start on the first page. I go for the second or third, to warm up drawing first before making the one that ""counts"" so I'm already a little in the headspace of drawing or am used to the paper. Unless I just finished one sketchbook and want to keep drawing and am already warmed up -- which is never the case. I definitely have a harder time completing a sketchbook than starting a new one.
I like to start my sketch book by trying something I am not familiar with and I use that as a reference to keep a theme going of practicing that through the book so that by the end of the book I will have another technique to make pieces with. :) :)
Oh I have an idea, you could make a drawing on the left side and a straight line in between with the writing, "How I started" On top and then when you finish the sketchbook you can go back to the first page and redraw your old drawing with the writing "How I finished" On the right side to see how much you've improved.
Wow even your tests and swatches? Right thats what there called? Hopefully anyway even those look really pretty love the art inside your books super double extra super Beautiful and Cool! And thank you so much for the tips definatly keepin them in mind super helpful oh and how I start is I seriously wait for awhile long while and then just force myself to draw something first off because I know ill never touch it if i don't second of all it would just be a waist I always find it difficult sometimes even just to draw but i try actually I have a sketchbook right now that I'm afraid to touch but I'm gonna have to sooner or later hopefully soon And anyways your so so talented Happy Holidays To You And Everybody Keep Up The Amazing Work❤
Those are good ideas, thank you. I find it harder to start a sketch book than finish it. I simply leave the first page blank. This is maybe not the best solution, but it works for me.
What i did to fill my sketchbook, was on the very first page, i had my friends pitch in and draw on the first three pages. We call them the “friend’s page”. It motivates me every time i open the sketchbook
of course, it is a sketchbook and not an exam. there are no rules and it is YOUR sketchbook, you can do whatever you want in it. no pressure to complete a drawing.
I like drawing myself. Sounds kinda narcissistic but if you draw yourself (I've always exaggerated the features that I hate about myself to familiarise myself with them and learn to love them) every time you get a new sketchbook, you can see how much you've grown. Same for the last page really :)
I like to make my sketch book like an adventure book,So for example if I went on a walk and found a feather on the ground I would take it and glue it to a page in my sketchbook
I just start a sketchbook without caring too much about the first page because I have the knowledge that no matter what it's not the worst thing I've ever drawn and if by some chance it is then it can only go uphill from here.
Laura van berlo I totally get it :D I'm always kind of hesitant when I start a new sketchbook... there is just something a little scary about it, haha.
I just do really fancy writing of a fun quote like: "I'm a giggly bitch by nature" on my first page! I helps me loosen up with the book [I usually draw in really nice books with material covers] so I can draw properly and not be afraid of the paper ':D
I don't have any particular way I start a sketchbook. I just draw the first thing that comes to mind or whatever thing I have been really wanting to draw recently. I personally find it harder to finish a sketchbook than start one and it's probably because I constantly jump between sketchbooks XD
yes, I also usually have a harder time finishing my sketchbooks than starting them. Drawing whatever you have on your mind at the time is a wonderful idea, that is usually how I go about it as well :). I used to jump between sketchbooks, too, but now I don't allow myself to buy a new one until I finish the old one :).
Make a calligraphy in the first page of your sketch book for introduction, you can design it with whatever you like( Doodles,nature,anime,etc)...be creative about it.
I love these videos even if I don't do sketchbooks for art. Love how calming they are. Only suggestion is don't use autofocus as it's jolty, but otherwise love
Do you have any tips that you would like to share? How do you usually start your sketchbooks?
palestblue I love your channel I love your art and its amazing it gave me many ideas for my sketch book
palestblue hi!! In my first sketchbook i drew a face portrait and im going to draw this again in the last page!
I start a new sketch book by not starting at the first page! Sometimes somewhere in the middle and when I know exactly what I want to do on the first page of when I'm confident about the sketch book I fill in the first page. My to to thing is handlettering.
The first page I put a rubber stamp of the start date, and then I do searches of my tombo markets and watercolor to test the page :)
I never afraid of drawing in the first ones, because they are always messy and I never show them up. thank you so much!
Those are good ideas, thank you. I find it harder to start a sketch book than finish it.
I simply leave the first page blank. This is maybe not the best solution, but it works for me.
well if it works for you I'd say it is a perfect solution! :) I actually used to do that, too! :) thank you so much for watching!
What i did to fill my sketchbook, was on the very first page, i had my friends pitch in and draw on the first three pages. We call them the “friend’s page”. It motivates me every time i open the sketchbook
that's a wonderful idea!!
Thanks! ^^
Your galaxy is so beautiful
and today on... spot the fellow frank iero fan:
Samantha Sauro ahahaha 💕💕💕
Your sketxhbooks are awesome. 💯✨
thank you!!! :)
I love your sketchbook
Step 1: Have a sketchbook
Step 2: Be a good artist
Yes I always use the mix media sketchbooks by canson!
I totally get it now - I have seen so many people use and love it, I honestly don't know why it took me this long to try it - it's AMAZING!!
Ya they really are and the paper is heavy weight so you can draw on both sides plus they are pretty easy to pack around and carry
Another thing you can do is draw yourself and the date you started and at the end draw yourself again and end date to show you progress!
When drawing in a sketchbook, is it okay if you never finish some of your drawings?
of course, it is a sketchbook and not an exam. there are no rules and it is YOUR sketchbook, you can do whatever you want in it. no pressure to complete a drawing.
I totally agree, you can do whatever you want in your sketchbook :)
you had me at watercolor Star Wars art
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Ah, two of my favorite things, how wonderful to meet a fellow Star Wars and watercolor art lover!!
Amazing video! Thanks a lot for making it )

palestblue :)
I like drawing myself. Sounds kinda narcissistic but if you draw yourself (I've always exaggerated the features that I hate about myself to familiarise myself with them and learn to love them) every time you get a new sketchbook, you can see how much you've grown. Same for the last page really :)
wow this is really helpful thanks for you tips😊

Tooooooo beautiful 😍
Reylo for life💗, by the way, I just found your channel and I am totally in love 🙈❤
thank you so much!
I start a sketchbook by using that page to practice something. In my current sketchbook I am filling that page with hands.
that's a wonderful idea. Ah yes, hands, I need to practice painting hands as well! :)
the last Jedi was the first star wars movie I've seen and omg now i need to watch every single one of them back to back omg it was so good

YESSS REYLO SHIPPER RIGHT HERE❤️
I like to make my sketch book like an adventure book,So for example if I went on a walk and found a feather on the ground I would take it and glue it to a page in my sketchbook
I just start a sketchbook without caring too much about the first page because I have the knowledge that no matter what it's not the worst thing I've ever drawn and if by some chance it is then it can only go uphill from here.
that is a wonderful way to look at it
Thank you for these amazing tips, this will be helpful!!
VivifyArt thank you so much for watching
amazing as always! I try not to be freaked out when starting a new sketchbook, but most of the time I can't keep it up XD
Laura van berlo I totally get it :D I'm always kind of hesitant when I start a new sketchbook... there is just something a little scary about it, haha.
she is brilliant! o-o
thank you so much
I just do really fancy writing of a fun quote like: "I'm a giggly bitch by nature" on my first page! I helps me loosen up with the book [I usually draw in really nice books with material covers] so I can draw properly and not be afraid of the paper ':D
I love the Frank Iero sticker
Sometimes I start a sketchbook with a quote on the first page, to practice calligraphy. The quote usually is either inspirational or a funny one
Alejandra Erazo that's a great idea, thank you so much for sharing!!
I don't have any particular way I start a sketchbook. I just draw the first thing that comes to mind or whatever thing I have been really wanting to draw recently. I personally find it harder to finish a sketchbook than start one and it's probably because I constantly jump between sketchbooks XD

I love these videos even if I don't do sketchbooks for art. Love how calming they are. Only suggestion is don't use autofocus as it's jolty, but otherwise love
thank you so much! :) And thank you for your feedback, I will try to use the manual focus next time!
this is my first time watching one of your videos and i think you should do a video on the femal and mail face and body
Reylo yes!!!

that's a great idea! :)
AAAAAAH SERIOUSLY I WANT TO STEAL YOURSKETCH BOOK

Honestly Reylo fanart is the best to start off your sketchbook with
I though so, too :D :D :D
The first page of my sketchbooks are always the trial page for my markers, color pencils, paints, etc.
i usually use my first page of my sketchbook for doodles ive done on loose sheets of paper and i just tape them in
that's a great idea, thank you for sharing! :)
