I made a bunch of stickers that say “Mistakes are only a beauty in making.” Every time I make a horrible mistake of a drawing ✍️ I happily slap the sticker on and flip to the next page and start again.
When I was little I had a fingerprint book signed by Ed Emberly but he misspelt my name so he asked me what my favorite animal was and I told him it was a dragon, so he scribbled over the misspelling with drawn fire and drew a dragon breathing it, then my corrected name below c:
That is exactly what I do. I never tear out a page, I won't remember what mistakes to avoid if I don't keep it. This goes hand in hand to show progress as well.
Sketchbooks are supposed to be messy. I like my sketchbook because it shows my personality and my mistakes. (Your tips are amazing and your sketchbook is absolutely beutiful)
Thank you for watching:) I think sketchbooks can be whatever you want them to be - messy or neat:) I like mine to be both, messy but color coordinated.
I tend to add a sticky note over the area where I messed up so I can still look back at my mistakes later by lifting up the sticky note so I can see my progress, plus it adds a pop of color
I really love these ideas, but I am one of these persons who like to come back after some time... look at the failures and then look at my new artworks to see how much I get better since then.. ^^
There are a few ideas for you today, which did you like best and how do you all fix mistakes or ruined pages? I'd love to hear any tips that you have:)
I love the collage idea with the quote it is very inspirational and helps you when you flick through your sketch book to find it have a fun weekend everyone xoxo
I like to take acrylic paint, best are dark colours but everything works if you make it, and paint over my mistake. Like if I mess up an eye I draw a streak of black paint over it wait till it dries and then draw the eye again with a white marker. I always loved the effect this gives
something i like to do is to doodle over ugly pieces and sort of vandalize it with cute little creatures or patterns, also putting a sticky note over a messed up area and drawing it again over the sticky note connecting it to the real drawing looks really cool.another thing ive done is i’ll take some paint swatch papers with the colors on them, and glue them ove a drawing maybe write or draw something on them.
What I do when I mess up on a page is just work with it, maybe make it part of something a bit more abstract than what I had originally planned, but never cover it up. You did the work, frame it, no matter how bad it looks you can always make it look better.
Windy Iris Art. Heheh when i first watch ur vids ,z only question came across is this.. N i told my fianCe " hey look at these, wouldn't it be beautifull on my table" he said hell ya not again comic markers!! 😝
My favourite of your tips is to cut around it. 😃 Depending on what the mistake is, you could repeat it in several parts of the page, making it look distressed, or abstract. Another idea... is to just redraw the messed up bits, maybe using a different medium in that section. (Only doable in some cases). That would make a different texture, and maybe add interest to the drawing. In the case of the messed up eye, the cover up piece, could have been an eye patch. Lots of things you can do, and you gave good ideas. 😃
Thank you. I was looking for a way to "lock" or "hide" draft work or failed attempts so one could flip through my sketchbook without seeing the mess. But, I have many different alternatives, now, because of this video.
My favorite was the cut around your mistake one. Windy, your art is absouloutely amazing, and you're my far favorite Art-UA-camr. You inspire me so much. I love your style, and you're very unique and creative. Thank you so, so, sooo much. Im a young artist, and I love the tips you tell us. Im definitely trying some of these out. Thank you, Windy.
Loved this!!! I had only thought of going over in a heavier medium (like acrylic over pencil) but, I remove pages to collage & worst cases I've considered recycling the paper (papermaking) - thank you for adding to my options 😃
Most of the time when you were coloring the cut-out zentangle page I was zoning out, because it's just so satisfying to what people color things like that!! Ezpecially in time-lapse.
Could you make more videos like this? Where you give ideas on how to fix mess-ups or inspiration? (because with these ideas on how to FIX stuff, it also gave me ideas on art peices that I could create)
Thank you so much for this! I often get stuck into the idea that my sketchbook has to be “sketches” and I’m learning it’s much more than that! This has really helped!
Thank you for watching Anna - glad the video was helpful! I think sketchbooks can be whatever you make them. Places for random sketching or mountains of collages . . . its up to you:)
I loved ALL of the ideas! I have started my first sketchbook. I am teaching myself to sketch and watercolor just as a creative outlet. As you can imagine, I definitely needed ideas for covering mistakes! Thanks a lot!
I enjoyed the video very much! I especially like two of the fixes you made: The page that you messed up more turned out lovely and second, the packet page.
I really really loved the third one ( make a collage). when you stuck that SHINE sticker, I was like WOW ! . I love your ideas a lot. I will surely try out the 3rd one.
I found this video because my newer spiral sketchbook has micro perforated sheets and they've started tearing from the bottom up to nearly the middle of the pages and I didn't know what to do. Every time I'd turn the pages, they'd bend weirdly at the perforated edges and ultimately compromised the integrity so they just started to tear. About 25% of the beginning of the sketchbook is like this, even on pages I haven't gotten to yet. I didn't want to tear out my existing works because it's a fairly new one. Didn't occur to me to just use washi tape to hold them in place 😅 It's effective, safe for the pages, and cute! Plus side, I stumbled upon these amazing ideas and I love them all. I definitely need to do the pocket idea because I have a bunch of stuff shoved between the last page and the back of my sketchbook.
Wow Thankyou!! My New Years resolution is to not rip out pages of books. And I have this huge empty sketchbook and I love deep thought out or aesthetic drawings so it takes time and there is like SO MANY pages . PS I have two 😂 thanks to you I have been inspired to make a mood journal/ book. When I am bored ( a lot ) I am going to take out the book and either paint, collage, draw and really do any form of art that expresses my feelings . And I know that is going to be messy and abstract so I won't want to cover it up. But I am clumsy and have A LOT of washi tape and it might get in paper and rip or I could spill something so ya.Also whenever I have a school project requiring art I ALWAYS mess up so now I know what to do. Anyways thanks for inspiration ( the collage thing inspired me , I dont know why I get ideas at the weirdest times but thanks anyways) and also thanks for ideas on how to get rid of mistakes
You're very welcome Tara - I'm very glad you found the video helpful! It's my goal not to rip pages out of my sketchbook as well. Love the sound of your mood journal, I think that's a great idea. It's fun to be expressive and messy in sketchbooks:)
I love this video it really helped me and my friend because we mess up alot when we're drawing. A cool thing I thought about when you were talking about the eye being messed up was if you cut out a small leaf drawing and glued it to her eye then drew an eye over the leaf it would make her look like she had a leaf for an eye.
Love this. I’d also like to mention you should take a picture and can fix stuff digitally if you still need the work. As for saving the page these are pretty cool ideas:) thanks
I love your ideas and tips .....I am very new to drawing and some of my attempts at portraits are horrendous so I shall do your ideas to bring my confidence back to keep trying. Thankyou xox
I loved the collage page and the cut page the most since they seem to add a nice feel, and I can do them easily. Thanks for the video! It really helped
These are good ideas, I'll have to use them sometime :) I like to try and make pages where I tested supplies usable again, as I make quite a mess when I do that, so one thing I have done is paint over them with acrylic and then bordered it with washi tape. Then on top of the acrylic you can draw in with colored pencil or marker. I use mixed media paper so this usually works well, but you can probably just gesso it first if it's not very heavy paper.
I either collage over, cover the page with india ink and then use it as a griffiti page with coloured markers, or I do a drawing on a peice of a manufacturers sample paper that I want to try out and I glue this on top (either fully or as a flap), leaving part of the underneath image as a border, depending on the type of 'happy accident'.😋
I did the worst thing to my sketchbook. I got a brand new sketchbook a couple of months ago and at first it seemed perfect and I didn't want to mess it up. With all that pressure my first page didn't turn out as well as I would have liked it ... so I tried to tear it out. I messed it up so bad and also ruined the binding pretty bad. I sort of fixed it but the first page looked absolutely terrible. I went into a lot of art blocks because of it. Today I really wanted to try creating some art and when I saw the sketchbook I just got really unmotivated to do anything. I figured out a way that I can fix the sketchbook if I just cut the pages out that I didn't like....it turned out to be a nightmare! I COMPLETELY ruined the sketchbook and it's binding. I feel bad because the sketchbook was quite expensive and now I'm going to need to buy a new one....well now I know that cutting out pages is a horrible idea :(
Oh I feel your pain, ripping sketchbook pages can completely ruin the binding. I've been there before. If you have to take out a page, you can very carefully use an exato knife and cut out the page, this will help to keep the binding intact.
These are all great suggestions! I’ve done versions of all of these in my own journals...I have also glued pop-up elements (as in something you’d see in a pop-up book) on a troublesome page, and then when somebody comes to it, they’re distracted by the pop-up and they don’t notice the mistake at all. X^D Also, once I was in a printmaking class, and one of my classmates was having trouble with a print not turning out how she wanted it, and we were all working on a deadline and the materials were expensive, so she didn’t want to trash the print and start a new one. I suggested she just try random things to it and see how it turned out, because the worst case scenario would be if it ended up being totally unusable for her grade, which wasn’t very likely. She ended up running it through the printing press again (in another color and upside-down), throwing paint balls at it, flicking wet ink onto it with an old toothbrush, rubbing sandpaper on it, adding glitter, and even chewing on the edges! (Don’t worry, we were using 100% cotton paper, hehe.) By the time the class was done, she said it was her favorite print.
I love your ideas❤. But honestly, nobody has to see your sketch book. You don't have to cover up your mistakes. But if they really bother you that much.... Go ahead!😀 Great work, and keep it up😊
Thank you so much I don’t like to rip pages out of my sketch book and this really inspired me to be more creative and turn a bad thing into a good thing
I have this cheap packaging label that I use to cover my drawing and I just draw over it. Another thing I use is paint it all (my sketchbook isn't for painting but it holds it quite well enough) and start a different images in paint instead. Or just cover it up with a post-it and draw over it
+[Maria ] Hi Maria. Labels sound like a good idea - I like to prep my sketchbook pages sometimes with gesso, that helps the paper stand up to the paints😀
Sometimes I just leave them. I think it's nice to get to a place where u aren't embarrassed by ur mistakes. I still might try some of these since they seem fun.
What I really like to do to messed up pages ist work with textures, like glueing down thin strips of different materials or tissue and maybe paint it later. It adds a lot of interest and can even be use on a smaller scale so you don't have to cover up the hole page.
I love these! I always "play it safe" with my sketchbooks and I've come to not like that because it ends up mostly just being pencil sketches and looking bland. So I want to try mixing it up more. I always have loose sheets of paper with color swatches and scrap pieces from cutouts, so I've started pasting them to fill up pages and on the back pages that I never draw on. Some artists also use sticky notes over mistakes and I find that fun to do as well. :3 thanks for the video!
Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching and leaving a comment:) Gluing on the backs of pages would be a useful technique for the backs of marker pages - there always ink showing through in my sketchbooks:)
Those tips are really really helpfull. When I start my sketchbooks I never know what to do with them and I end up making ugly doodles that I really hate and that have no purpose what so ever. Everytime I would turn over to that page I would be reminded of those ugly things that for the most part are at the beginning of my sketchbook and I would start to hate the hole thing and I wouldn't want to draw in it anymore. So thank's a lot for your tips!
I made a bunch of stickers that say “Mistakes are only a beauty in making.” Every time I make a horrible mistake of a drawing ✍️ I happily slap the sticker on and flip to the next page and start again.
Those stickers sound perfect - I think we could all do with some:)
I love that idea!!!
I do that too!( actually i stick notes with some sentences like that)
Kappriii Bro that is a good idea!
You gave me an idea thanks
When I was little I had a fingerprint book signed by Ed Emberly but he misspelt my name so he asked me what my favorite animal was and I told him it was a dragon, so he scribbled over the misspelling with drawn fire and drew a dragon breathing it, then my corrected name below c:
Oh that's a great story - what a lovely memory:)
Windy Iris Art i agree
I love dragons...
Is a dragon an animal
Oh wow!
Even if you can't fix the page, keep it as a learning experience.
Yes a good option too:)
My OCD is too strong for that option
PaperBuddy SAME
That is exactly what I do. I never tear out a page, I won't remember what mistakes to avoid if I don't keep it. This goes hand in hand to show progress as well.
Jo Bassett A mistake is a happy accident. Dont afraid of making mistake, just do it and see the improvment
I always do the "mess it up more" I thought I was alone!
icon for hire x flyleaf And I thought I was the only one too😉
Windy Iris Art I'm like "welp I already messed up"
icon for hire x flyleaf ggjhfdrhddjfhjk*jhkciyreruwyktf
It’s really fun when you are kind of angry that you messed it up in the first place
You werent

Thank you for watching:) I think sketchbooks can be whatever you want them to be - messy or neat:) I like mine to be both, messy but color coordinated.
Windy Iris Art, Yes, I agree :D
But, what happens if you mess up while you’re trying to fix the mess up? 😁😂
Mess it up even more 😂
#2 mess it up even more
Do something else with the page from there or mess it up completely
Tear up the page 😂
Haha 😂 lol true
I like to make the page full black and then draw on it with white pens! That's quite nice.
That's a great idea- very cool:)
Yeah ! That's a great idea
Omg thats a good idea!! You literally saved me
mess + mess = AMAZING
Exactly:)

Alexa Sweet. Heheh its like father+mother=YOU..😂😂
mess + mess = art
I tend to add a sticky note over the area where I messed up so I can still look back at my mistakes later by lifting up the sticky note so I can see my progress, plus it adds a pop of color
That sounds like a good idea Marilyn - you'll be able to have the before and after on the same page:)
Marilyn Diaz : That's a great idea!! 👍😀
I really love these ideas, but I am one of these persons who like to come back after some time... look at the failures and then look at my new artworks to see how much I get better since then.. ^^
Thank you Ciri:) Leaving some mistakes and then coming back to them later is I agree very beneficial as well:)
"blessing in disguise" girl yes, PREACH. and your style is very different from mine but I really like it.
There are a few ideas for you today, which did you like best and how do you all fix mistakes or ruined pages? I'd love to hear any tips that you have:)
Windy Iris Art I either tear those pages😅 or write something on that page with big handwriting with colourful pens..
I love the collage idea with the quote it is very inspirational and helps you when you flick through your sketch book to find it have a fun weekend everyone xoxo
Lavanya Lulla Handwriting over is a cool idea:)
Nerdy girl 21 Have a fun weekend too:) I like the quote for that reason as well, its fun to find it in the sketchbook.
Windy Iris Art Thank you so much for replying have a great week xoxo
I do the collage one quite often, but I’ll cut pictures out of fashion magazines and try to make a kind of moodboard ish page
That must look really cool. Mood boards are so fun to make:)
Oooooh that's a good idea too :)
That's a nice idea! Thanks
Sunshine Hornick hehe I was ab to comment that same thing
ohhhhhh good idea!
This is a good idea!!! I'm going through a phase that I want to rip out every drawing that went wrong when I ink it. This really helps!!!!!
THANK YOU
I was going through that phase too so I am very happy you found the video helpful!

Yes vandalize ugly pages:) Love that.
Wonderful ideas! The "mess it up more" one was my favorite. :)
Thank you Amy - the mess it up page was my favourite to create:)
I’ve never seen this amount of talent.
Turning a mess into a masterpiece.
All your drawings are amazing
Thank you!
How do you get everything soooooooooo good
yes they're amazing XD
Yours are too i saw your channel
What I do when I mess up on a page is just work with it, maybe make it part of something a bit more abstract than what I had originally planned, but never cover it up. You did the work, frame it, no matter how bad it looks you can always make it look better.
I like that thought, I try to make things work too - when the paper tears however its a bit more tricky and perhaps time to cover it up:)
So creative! But GIRL! How many markers do you have!? 👏😂
Thank you Ginny:) Not sure how many markers there are - I've been collecting them for years, I save up and get a few every six months or so:)
Windy Iris Art. Heheh when i first watch ur vids ,z only question came across is this.. N i told my fianCe " hey look at these, wouldn't it be beautifull on my table" he said hell ya not again comic markers!! 😝
Ginny Bee hi
Not enough. You can never have enough markers.
@@WindyIris Don't the markers dry 😁
My favourite of your tips is to cut around it. 😃
Depending on what the mistake is, you could repeat it in several parts of the page, making it look distressed, or abstract.
"If you mess it up enough, it starts looking nice again." Brilliant! 😃
Keeping your wrapping paper from gifts you’ve opened is such a good idea! 🙌🏼❤️
Thank you for this. I've ripped out so many pages because I've messed it up or just hated the way they turned out.
Glad you found the video helpful:)
I love this!
Sometimes I actually sew a piece of fabric over the mistake. It looks so cute!
Sounds like a great idea:)
Windy Iris Art oh my you replied! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this!!!! I'm always ripping pages out
Thanks for watching Holly. I used to rip pages out alot and I'm trying really hard at the moment to keep all the pages in my sketchbook:)
Ur ideas are amazing!! I’m gone try alll of them soon!!
Ah such good ideas, usually I just paint white acrylic over drawings I don't like hahaa Mistakes can make good art sometimes for sure!
I like to see mistakes as new drawing opportunities:) I like the acrylic paint idea, I sometimes use gesso like that:)
It is better to make something out of it like you have done here with the girl and the leaves, but sometimes I'm like nooo I cant haha
The way you are adding colours to the pictures is so REAL...!
Your choice of picking colour is very nice.. 👍👏
Thank you - picking colours is my favourite part🎨
You are the art magician because you always make anything into art that is super beautiful!!!
Thank you. I was looking for a way to "lock" or "hide" draft work or failed attempts so one could flip through my sketchbook without seeing the mess. But, I have many different alternatives, now, because of this video.

Edit: I love the last one so much!! And your ideas are great ! I almost threw my sketchbook out.
Thank you Chelsea and please don't even think about throwing away your sketchbook. I'm sure it can be saved:)
I loved all of your fixes, great ideas. I am going to try #1. Thank you so much Windy.
Thank you Joetta for watching:)
Windy Iris Art your welcome
I really loved the second idea. I think I might try it out. I have some art in my sketch book so far that I really just hate.
Hope you do try it out:) Feel free to tag me on Instagram if you post a picture I'd love to see:)

I love this video but can you do a tips for beginners video thanks xoxo
Sketchbook tips or general art tips?

My absolute favorite one was when you just slapped a bunch of random medium's on the paper.
It was pretty relaxing to create that page😀
Wow I never thought about doing stuff like this. Thanks :)
Thank you for watching:)
The pocket idea is really helpful for me. Thanks! :)
I love your ideas❤. But honestly, nobody has to see your sketch book. You don't have to cover up your mistakes. But if they really bother you that much....
Go ahead!😀
Great work, and keep it up😊
Actually, I enjoyed all the pages!!! I learned so much!
The collage is so helpful! Sometimes at school people think it’s ok to draw in MY sketchbook.... I get so annoyed when someone draws in my sketchbook.
I can't pick a favourite, I love them all!
Your ideas are AMAZING
I love them
Will definitely be trying some myself
Thanks Josie - hope you try the ideas out:)
No mistakes. Just happy little accidents.
Yes indeed:)
Thank you so much I don’t like to rip pages out of my sketch book and this really inspired me to be more creative and turn a bad thing into a good thing
I don't like ripping out pages either:)
I liked all of these ideas....now I have some really great ideas to fix messed up pages in my sketchbooks :D
Thank you - glad you liked the video:)
Some great ideas here. These could be very useful for me. Thank you.
You have really gaved the best ideas I have ever thought ❤️❤️😀👍🏻👍🏻
Sometimes I just leave them. I think it's nice to get to a place where u aren't embarrassed by ur mistakes. I still might try some of these since they seem fun.
Leaving them in is good too, these are just some ideas if you want to change it:)
I've got the same pencils as you when you messed the page up more. They can blend quite well even though they are very cheap
the collage page is so beautiful im in love!!!
Thank you Frida:)
It might sound weird, but you talk really nice :) I mean, the way you pronounce the words it's just beautiful.
What I really like to do to messed up pages ist work with textures, like glueing down thin strips of different materials or tissue and maybe paint it later. It adds a lot of interest and can even be use on a smaller scale so you don't have to cover up the hole page.
What great ideas! I liked them all but my favorite was Cutting the edge of the page. Thanks
Thank you Irene:)
OMG YOU SOO CREATIF I DIDN'T THINK ABOUT THAT BEFORE!!!😍
Glad you enjoyed the video:)
Glad you found the video useful:) Thanks for watching!
