    You said a magical phrase (for me) in this video, Ohn Mar! You said "keep your sketchbook private" and a HUGE level of anxiety around making art just lifted from me. Every time I open my sketchbook I conciously or unconsiouly start to think about what others will think if they see it. Giving me permission to keep it for just myself is a game changer for me. Than you so much!

      I think in today’s age of social media, we are pushed into the notion that everything in our lives have to be shared. When you’re trying to explore your personal creativity, it takes courage and time to gain confidence.

    I have to constantly remind myself that my sketchbook is just for me and that it is a tool to express myself and learn. The pressure to create a masterpiece every single time takes the fun out of the creating process. Thank you so much for being so honest and straight forward.

      When you think it has to be a masterpiece you're always setting yourself up for a painful or challenging experience rather than a fun experience - so let's move away from that mindset. Sketchbooks are pressure and for pleasure.

      You're very welcome Alyssa. Social media can be such a helpful tool. Put the flipside is it really ramps up the comparison and frustrations? What people show all the highlights rather than behind the scenes, which is messy. Even a quick sketchbook piece is not created by tapping your paintbrush on the page.

    I love your artwork and I really liked what you said about starting sketchbook and the stuff about Van Gogh , my approach is leaving the first page and going straight to the second page and sometimes the 4th then once I’ve filled sone pages up and boost my confidence, I go back and do it . And since I have the approach that I can always cover it with acrylics helps or I could glue a nice piece of artwork onto the first page helps restricted because my and then I had to remind myself that it’s more of a waste, not using it and brings me a massive amount of joy more joy the more I work in it . Also when I’m having a good art day I might sketch out like 10 pages so I’ve always got something to paint or colour in in my journal I love this approach.

      I was going to include more reasons that trip us up when pursuing a sketchbook practice. However, there are probably a myriad of reasons and so it's best reserved for a completely separate video. Creative blocks, self-doubt, Perfectionism, or time constraints are common obstacles that can prevent artists from producing work or progressing in their practice. I think I am really confused by how I want to approach things. I want to focus on composing the page but also have really messy drawings in charcoal and then I want to do some watercolour.........this means I need different books and I guess I'm grappling with not working consistently in one book at a time. sometimes that makes me confused.

      I do want to create another video where we look at reasons for not pursuing a sketchbook practice. Maintaining a sketchbook practice requires discipline and consistency, so there may be procrastination, distractions, or perfectionism. Even fear of being judged for their skill level - there are many ways we trip ourselves up. Let me know if you'd like a video exploring this.

  • @caitlinneill
    @caitlinneill Рік тому +2

    My issue with sketchbooks is that I'm scared to start. So, instead of dedicating my practice to one, I try to find the perfect paint and the perfect sketchbook and along the way, I end up starting with 4-8 sketchbooks without choosing one.

    • @OhnMarWinArt
      @OhnMarWinArt  Рік тому +2

      There are various reasons why some people find it difficult to start a sketchbook practice. Firstly, self-doubt and a fear of failure can be major factors. Many individuals may feel apprehensive about their artistic abilities or worry that their initial sketches won't meet their own expectations. This fear of not being "good enough" can prevent them from taking that crucial first step of putting pen to paper. There are many other reasons. Let me know if you would like a video where I explore this theme further.

      Yes pls to more on this subject of keeping a sketchbook & how to start/ideas… I relate a lot with above comments from Caity Learns to Paint - basically I’ve been excited to collect lots of paints & swatching, looking for/buying the perfect paper/sketchbook & brushes & just supplies in general & then that’s sadly where it ends! I guess I struggle with perfectionism, procrastination/discipline & a bit overwhelmed with what to start painting especially if I’ve paid lot for the paper/sketchbook not wanting to ‘ruin it’! Plus my drawing skills aren’t great & so I’m afraid to start! I find your comments encouraging, relatable & inspiring! A lil while back I especially bought myself a small A6 Hahnemuhle w/c book like you use & squeeze tube masking fluid to try out some painting like you did in your ‘masking fluid experiment book’ - I’ve never used masking fluid before, but really loved what you did on those pages! 💛💚💙
