I've been drawing in sketchbooks for 8 and a half years straight and I enjoy looking through them to see what I was thinking about at different times in my life, so I like my sketchbooks more chronological and journal like. I'm also really dedicated with dating my sketches for this reason and because my mum used to always remind me to sign and date my art since I was really small ❤

Yeah I like to date my pages and write where I am (coffee shop, library, etc) to kinda help me remember context of what I was making and how I was feeling

I highly recommend Minnie's 30 Day Sketchbook. It's helped me get out of an art slump with a nice variety of ideas that aren't too difficult (nor simplistic) but creative and fun to ignite that creative spark again 👍👍

other than one piece I pushed myself for and am very happy with, I always start with a swatch page, it's easy and gets the fear over and done with 🥰

I do not paint or draw, but I love to collect blank books. I use them to plan craft projects such as quilts and as journals.

Great Video thank you! I love your book "The 30-Day Sketchbook Project" I have a dedicated sketchbook just for those projects. Also I love having multiple sketchbooks. This video has inspired me to start using some of my blank ones. What am I waiting for :)

😊 Thank you for the inspiring video. Great ideas and insights as usual.
I too have a variety of sketchbooks, and each is for a different reason and/or art medium.
To start, I still love to use cheap copy paper that I clip on to a clipboard. Simple as that!
I have that sitting on my art desk in my dedicated studio room, so I can just grab it and sketch while I am inspired!
Plus, I will add notes on the page for projects and never be inhibited about not having a pretty page when I use copy paper. ❤
Then later I can add the notes to any of six lined paper 3-ring binders I have for specific types of projects/products that I will be creating to use my art my for.
I have a couple inexpensive, smooth surface, spiral-bound 9"x12" sketchbooks that are best for dry media Like graphite and color pencils, pens, etc.
Those are made from recycled materials (guessing paper) and acid-free. The paper is not white, but off-white/natural.
I use these primarily for sketching art and layout ideas for any art that I plan to turn into a product itself, or printed, embroidered, screen printed, sublimated, etc. onto a product I am creating to sell.
Then I have several sketchbooks that are for specific types of mediums, like markers, or made to hold up better with wet media, (or mixed), but isn't actually watercolor paper.
And a couple toned-paper sketchbooks for use with dry media such as color pencils mostly.
I also use the toned-paper sketchbooks for what I like to call semi-wet media, which is like a brush pen filked with India ink, or a brush with white opaque paint that I'd mostly use to accent the black pen or brush pen artwork.
I don't use markers in the above types of sketchbooks because I don't like them bleeding through to the other side.
There is paper and sketchbooks that are made to handle marker, so I have one for that.
I think it's a great idea to put the month/year on the page, especially if you don't put a year on the sketchbook (I don't).
    I usually forget. 😂
I guess I consider my toned-paper, mixed-media and marker sketchbooks just for fun and exploration, so I really enjoy using them just to try new things and do something that is more "finished" looking.
My 9"x12" spiral-bound sketchbooks (and the cheap copy paper on the clip boards), is what I consider my "working" sketchbooks, but I like to use those inexpensive things because I don't feel inhibited by trying to make it ever look "nice". 😊
I think one of the keys to success with making your art your living, is to not add any additional stress on yourself to make each piece "perfect".
But that can be hard to do. 😂
That's why I love my copy paper on the clipboard to put down that frenzy of ideas when the muse hits, and then develop them in more detail in the recycled paper spiral bound sketchbooks. 🥰

Such a good video! I’ve been following you for ages and started using your random page tip probably 5+ years ago and still do it. Makes such a difference!! I’m falling back in love with my sketchbook after a while of doing oil paintings on canvas, and it feels so freeing to mix things up inbetween the larger pieces. Super inspiring, thank you for sharing💜 have a great day everyone

My 3 main inspirations for drawing/painting, are: Pinterest (drawing/sketches there are endless and cool!). The sights around my city, mostly old statues, old buildings etc. and lastly, any drawings/sketches, I see on the internet.

I need a tip for finishing sketchbooks, lol. I always end up buying a new one before I finish the previous. And now I have sketches from 2016 and 2024 shoved up side by side as I backtrack, and I hate it 😅

I will also start a sketchbook somewhere in the middle. Actually, I intentionally make it a mess. A smear or splotch, then write a note indicating this was done on purpose. It's to get away from the idea that everything needs to be a masterpiece.
