The sustain on that beast is awesome ! It sounds like it's going to jump right out of your hands ! My shopping is done. I was tring to decide between a J16e a Guild D1512 and a Gibson J45 12. This Martin blows the others out of the water. No comparisons...at all.
I absolutely love Guild 12s, they are the masters of that particular style of guitar, but I do think this Martin has something else in it that the others do not. I played 2 different lower priced Guild 12s before I settled on this and I'm extremely happy. It's an exquisite instrument and the most valuable one I own.
Great video! I love all those songs too! And you play them nicely. Learning to Fly is actually the first song I've ever performed in front of people in 8th grade! Thanks for the awesome video
Good to see you again. You still have the best cover of Downeaster Alex on the internet. I’ll always support you. Been with ya for five years (check your Downeaster Alexa cover comments.)
I appreciate you being there for the long haul! Without an audience this is just no fun haha - I'll be doing more covers in the future. Thanks for support!
Point noted - because I bought this used I went off the usual HD-28 specs which they clearly changed for this 12 string. A typical 6 string HD-28 always stands apart by using forward shifted scalloped bracing. My guess is by keeping the braced non-scalloped in the 12 string model they increase the integrity of the top, especially with twice the string pressure.

You are to young to remember the guitarist who was Tom Petty 12 string hero-Roger McGuinn of The Byrds!!! Peter Asher of the British duo, Peter and Gordon played a Gibson 12. AND THE MAN HIMSELF-John Denver and his Guild 12 string guitars!!
Too young to remember, but not too young to know. I've watched a ton of Petty documentaries where they talk about McGuinn's influence and his Rickenbacker 12s. I was listening to "Turn, Turn, Turn" as a kid on classic rock stations my parents played.
What gauge strings do you recommend for the HD1228, and the D1228. I love the medium strings. Is it ok to tune on E standard? Is this also true for vintage 1977 D1228?
I use .10s, it's pretty much all you should use if tuning to standard. 12 strings also sound really full and nice dropped to Eb, but I can never bring myself to do that. Because of the major tension caused by an extra set of strings pulling on the top and bridge, most suggest the .10 gauge. It's light, but keep in mind every note is doubled so it still sounds full. I'm sure there are heavier gauges to try, but most people would detune those and then capo up for standard E tuning.
When did that make that model? Is it flat braced as opposed to scalloped? They don't offer now, I know that. Maybe you mean the Gilmour model? I never got a chance to play that one, but I really would love an opportunity with that sinker mahogany body.
Love the sound of this guitar! Love the sustain!
It is truly superb

The HD12-28 actually doesn't have forward shifted scalloped bracing. Check out the official Martin specs.

Sounds great but I prefer of a d-12-35
