Great video, here. Wow! The memories of that decade came flooding in. Becoming a teenager, Watergate, the fall of Saigon, the Bicentennial, polyester, Tommy, the wreck fo the Edmund Fitzgerald, high school graduationd and more. I had an uncle who was a retired Great Lakes freighter captain and knew the captain of the Fitzgerald. This is kind of macabre, but the crew is still down there on the ship, minus one (he was ejected from the ship and is lying on the lake bed) all nearly perfectly preserved due to the fact that the water at that depth rarely goes above freezing. At any reate, the 70s produced some legendary music.
Hey James. Your comment (which is awesome by the way) inspired me to do a deep dive on the history of the wreck and the ship. They even have a recording of the coast guard asking other ships to help out. Very sad. Other stuff that makes me think 70s: trans am with the T top and 18 wheelers. My brother loved trucks and had posters of 18 wheelers on his wall. He loved the song Convoy and the movie...with Kris Kristofferson. I was born in the 70s but I do remember them.....and I have the bad haircut to prove I was there! Thanks again for all of the support! It's appreciated SO MUCH. -Mark
@@8MinuteAxe How could I forget Trans Ams? I had a friend who had a 1974 Trans Am with a 455 cu. in. engine. It had no external door handles. Great selections Dude, love the history as well. I was on my way to southeast Asia when these songs were changing history. I carried my guitar to fourteen different counties and it saved me being so far from home, so young and lonely. like many guys in the Marines, my wife chose to leave me while I was deployed rather than welcome home a flag draped coffin. With so many Great 12 string songs to choose from the 70's. You did them justice with this pick Mark ! It pretty much summed up the genres and sounds of the 12 String from that era. Very pleased to see Gordan Lightfoot made your cut. What a phenomenal singer, song writer, 12 string guitarist ! Thanks Mark for all your time and effort to bring us good content !! Hey Charles. I really appreciate your comment. I've actually been thinking about doing a full cover of Wreck but I'd need to get a strong baritone to sing it. Always wanted a 12 string. I remember playing my friends 12 string whenever I got the chance and played many of these songs! So very long ago this was, the 70s. You hit all my favorites including The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald! Iconic phrasing and melody to me but none of friends were really into that song. Struck me odd back then. I'm a new subscriber but very happy I found your channel. By the way,.. your performances in these videos are excellent! Noticed you have a passion for the 12 string! Like I said, always wanted one but is what it is. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Ralf. I agree. A lot of people in my generation point to Bon Jovi and the older generation points to Mr Tambourine Man. I appreciate you checking out the video and commenting. Have a great day and take care. Mark
Nice list. The Zeppelin songs all deserved to be on the list. That's the Way and Over the Hills and Far Away are to of my favorite songs to play on my 12 String. Thanks.
Excellent choices, Mark. Your videos have inspired me to pick up my 12 string to practice more often. I actually had not played for years, and when I found a great buy on a Martin 12 string at Guitar Center that got me playing again. Now I split my time between the 6 and 12.
Hey Robert. That's so great to hear. If I can inspire even a single person to play more then it's all worth it. I wasn't much of a 12 string player until a couple of years ago. Now it's a huge part of my playing and I even use it for half the songs at live solo shows. The Martin and Taylor entry level 12s are both fabulous guitars. It's hard to justify spending $2500 on a 12-string unless you're Leo Kottke. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. -Mark
Great selection of some 70’s classics! I really liked the video overlays where you play a fill to a song. I find these videos very inspirational to play some songs I have not played before in a while.
I'm thrilled my favorite band YES made the list and your version was spot on. I remember going to concerts in the late 60s where Steve did it on an electric 12-string. I think over the decades they figure out how to mike the guitar, move on to piezo electric guitars, and then most recently he started using Line-6, 12-string guitar emulation.
Well done, sir. The seventies was a target rich environment for the twelve string. Great choices. I always learn something watching your videos. Thanks for that.
Hey Woodman. Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. Honestly, I like the research and the factoids even more than the playing. My original goal was to have a channel where I talk about classic rock but that wasn't what the YT gods had in store for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm very grateful for the success I've had. I know that for every channel with 100k subs there are millions with 100 subs. I try to remember that when things are trending down for the channel like they have lately. Anyway, I really do thank you for your time and support. Please take care and be well. -Mark

Excellent choices Mark. Like some of the others, Maggie May makes my list, but then, I’d have to drop something! Bummer, I can’t decide which one to drop! Keep up the excellent work. I look forward to your videos every week!
Hey Jim. Thanks so much. I'm surprised at how many people mentioned Maggie May. That wouldn't have been the next one on my list. I would have put Horse with No Name and Wild Horses above it. I'm actually going to perform it this weekend at a gig. Thanks so much for all of the support. I really do appreciate it so much. Take care. -Mark
Hey Michael. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I spent more time and attention to detail on this one. When I decided to do Yes I thought 'I can't leave out the keyboard part' so I simulated it on guitar with the help of some effects and then when I was doing Wreck I thought 'this is really boring without the lead guitar' so I dubbed that in too. Everybody seems to really appreciate it so I'm glad I took the time. I appreciate your time and comment. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. -Mark
I could play "That's The Way" all day and never get bored. One of my favorite songs of all-time. When I learned how to play, "Over The Hills and Far Away", it was a milestone in my guitar learning days. By the way, I am pretty sure Chris Squire "pats" the strings with his palms on the intro to, "And You and I" 😉.
Thank you for this, Mark. I had that Yes album and would come home from classes, put it on and crank up the volume. One of the great bands of all time in my not so humble opinion.
Hey Ross. For sure. As I mentioned in the video, my brother was a huge Rush fan. While I gravitated towards the Beatles and Clapton, he listened to a ton of Yes, especially The Yes Album and Fragile. I like Close to the Edge the best but I know the other two much better from hearing them 100s of times. I really appreciate all of the support. I hope you're having a great weekend. Take care. -Mark
Hey man. It's funny. I thought I knew the majority of 12 string songs when I started the channel but I didn't know 10% of them. I've received an incredible education over the past 2 years. It's been awesome. I really appreciate your time and comment. I hope you have a great week. Please take care. -Mark
Hey Mark. What a great call.. Over 10k comments and you're the first one to mention Run of the Mill. I know the song well but I totally forgot about it and the fact that it uses a 12 string. All Things Must Pass really is amazing although if George had made it a single album it would be a contender for the best Beatles solo album. It still is, but there is some filler. Band On the Run is near perfect although I don't think anything can trump John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. What would be your pick? I really appreciate you checking out the video and supporting the channel. Have a great weekend and take care. -Mark
@@8MinuteAxe Love All Things Must Pass! Love Band On the Run as well. Favorite McCartney probably Ram. Agree with Plastic Ono Band, with Walls and Bridges a close second. Thanks for sharing your music!
Some tough choices Mark but I wouldn't argue with no's 1 and 2! The Yes tune brought back some memories for me of when I went to visit my kid sister who was studying at Manchester University. When I arrived she told me we're going to see Yes so we hopped on a bus and headed off to somewhere in the middle of nowhere where the band was performing in a huge indoor cattle market! They were just little dots in the distance but the gig was great anyway! I never realised so many great songs were played on a 12-string!
Hey Phillip. What a great story. BY FAR the best part of doing this channel are all of the amazing stories viewers tell me. I'm getting the real history of music that you can't get in a book. A cattle farm. Unbelievable. And yes, this was hard to pare down to 10. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I really appreciate all of the support very much. Take care and stay safe. -Mark

Hey Graham. I really appreciate that. I'm glad you enjoyed it. For some reason, I enjoyed making this one more. I went the extra mile on Wreck and the Yes tune. I even recorded three others that I didn't use including Xanadu by Rush. Anyway, enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. -Mark

The sad thing about More Than A Feeling is that the singing was also exceptional. And yes, I'm old enough that I was working in a music store when this came out.
Hey BB. You mean sad because of the tragic end of Delps life? I recently watched the local news report where they interviewed a couple of his neighbors that had no idea that he was famous. Amazing vocals for sure. One other interesting thing I recently found out. The story about just about every record company passing is a fallacy. Right from Tom's mouth: he put "about 30" cassettes in an envelope and heard back from 8! The fact that ANY of the 30 didnt just throw the package away is a miracle. I bet the 8 that responded were the 8 that listened. And I believe 3 were interested. To me its quite the opposite if the myth. Anybody that heard it may not have wanted to sign them right away but they knew it was good! Have a great weekend. Mark
Thanks Mal. I went the extra mile on this one with the guitar simulating the portamento keys on Yes and the guitar on Wreck. This one was more fun to make than some of the others. I really appreciate it. I hope you're well. Take care and have a great weekend. Mark
I like the list and when you talked and played the Edmund Fitzgerald intro...love the story telling in that song. Tragic yes yet the ship and crew live on. Awesome
Hey Andy. I really appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I cut it out of the final edit, but Suite was one of the first songs I ever learned on guitar. I'm self taught and I remember listening to it on a little GE tape recorder and trying to figure it out. I didn't know the bm chord so I was playing each note individually, hopping all over the fretboard. LOL. It was a good work out. Thats for sure. Thanks so much for all of the support. It really is appreciated very much. Take care. -Mark

Great stuff..Totally agree with number one...Glad to see Yes in the mix...Many thanks....😁
Hey Mark! Thanks so much for taking the time to check it out and comment. I almost left the guitar doing the portamento keyboard part out as it's a bit sloppy but I'm glad I left it in. It give the part more authenticity...I think. LOL. I hope you're having a great weekend. Take care and be well. -Mark
All great songs! And real nice and suttel effects
Hey Fausto. Thanks so much. I tried to go the extra mile with these and I'm glad I did. A lot of people have appreciated it. Please enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. -Mark
Amazing video dude. You really went the extra mile on getting these songs down like the original. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS ONE!
Hey brother. Thanks so much. I really appreciate that. I worked hard on this one and I'm happy with the way it came out! Have a great weekend. Mark
Stairway to heaven and more than a feeling...
The untimative 12 string songs
Hey Ralf. I agree. A lot of people in my generation point to Bon Jovi and the older generation points to Mr Tambourine Man. I appreciate you checking out the video and commenting. Have a great day and take care. Mark
Agree. In the 70s the 12 string was heard everywhere. Not as much today unfortunately.
Great list Mark! 38 years young but grew up listening to all these classic 70's greats!!
Nice list. The Zeppelin songs all deserved to be on the list. That's the Way and Over the Hills and Far Away are to of my favorite songs to play on my 12 String. Thanks.
Great selection. I'd have to agree. The 70's ruled for the 12 string.
First of all, you were lookin' sharp in that powder blue suit my friend. Secondly, love And You and I. Thanks for including that!
I even simulated the portamento keyboard part on the guitar. LOL
got extremely lucky to be the heir of a 1980s japanese 12 string guitar, so happy that i found this channel 😁😁
-Mark
"Don and his henchmen" Haha, undoubtably one of the hardest songs to cover on UA-cam.
Felder borrowed the Hotel riff
@@knowmusicman157from who?
@@chenelisha1053 The chord progression. Jethro Tull. Tune called We used to know. Eagles opened for Tull on an early tour. Probably when Don got the riff.

@@knowmusicman157 I can actually hear it, you’re right bud. Although there are “worst” rip-offs, I can definitely see where you’re coming from. Sounds too similar to be a coincidence
well done, I always find at least one stand out song to learn each time I watch your song lists. ....nomatter howmwny times i view your video's I always find a song that just catch my attention , and there is my next project song,-- thank you
Thanks again Brian!
Good selection
I love this songs
Hey David. Great to hear from you. I'm glad you liked it and I appreciate your time and comment. I hope you're having a great weekend. Take care and be well. -Mark
Awesome list! Another great video Mark!
Hey brother. I really appreciate all of your support. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you're having a great weekend. Take care my friend. -Mark
#2 will always be my #1! Goosebumps every time.
Another great video! Can hardly wait to get the tab! Thanks again!
Hey Jim. The tabs are in your inbox. Let me know if you need help with anything. Mark
Love the 70's. Great list!
Hey brother. I really appreciate it. I hope you're having a great weekend. Take care and stay safe. -Mark
I like your choices a lot! Thanks for doing this.
Thank you DC. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. I hope you're having a great weekend. Take care and be well. -Mark
Great memories! Great playing!
Thanks so much Burton. I really appreciate it. There were a lot to choose from and it was painful to cut some. Here's a more comprehensive video I did 25 FAMOUS 12 STRING RIFFS ua-cam.com/video/8Eteg4fqQ-E/v-deo.html. Thanks so much for your time and comment. Have a great evening and take care. -Mark
Wow, those are some sweet sounds !
Thanks. Does the club you're at now allow youtube? 😂🤣
Take care. -Mark
I really enjoyed the content.
Hey Nino. Thanks so much. I really appreciate your support. I hope you're having a great weekend. Take care and stay safe. -Mark
Really enjoyed your selections and in particular your performance!
-Mark
Excellent as usual !! Thanks for that
This really may have been the best of this series yet. Bravo my friend !
Great video I enjoyed it immensely thank you very much sir
Fantastic choices! Hotel California (on vinyl) was the first song I remember hearing as a child around 4 or 5 years old and sparked my love for music.
What a great video, and I really like your hat. Keep rocking. ❤🎸😇
Some of my favorite bands in this one...Yes! Styx! Rush! And Zep has so many bangers!!
Take care. -Mark
As always, immaculate stuff.
Great picks! I've owned a number of 12-strings since I was about 15. You have me a few more songs to learn!
Hey man. It's funny. I thought I knew the majority of 12 string songs when I started the channel but I didn't know 10% of them. I've received an incredible education over the past 2 years. It's been awesome. I really appreciate your time and comment. I hope you have a great week. Please take care. -Mark
Enjoyed the video.
Have you heard George Harrison's Run of the Mill?
-Mark
Great video!
:)
mark I can listen to you play all night. another great video. I am a YES fan and was happy to hear that tune. stairway at the end playing that harley benton with your buddy was a real treat.
LOL. Thanks Bob. Band of 1. :)
Amazing playing!
-Mark
Thanks for the memories. I was 16 in 1976 and Styx was one of my favorite bands. Yours playing is Awesome.
Hey David. Thanks so much. I really appreciate your time and comment. I was only 5 in 76 but Styx was a big part of my childhood. Tommy Shaw still looks like he's 30 years old today. LOL. Please have a great week and take care. -Mark
Great list and great riffs! Happy to see plenty of Zep! : )
Hey Brett. You know I always go heavy on the Zep. I've almost done as much Zep as I have Beatles.
Floyd is my favorite. So many loved ones gone now, so many i miss. RIP Dusty Hill
You are quite the guitarist!!
Hey Jeffery. I really appreciate that. Whatever ability I have didn't come easy. Lots of practice. Lots of crappy practice but I finally got it together in my 40s. LOL. Take care and have a great weekend. Mark
Mark
Nice one Axe. You sure put a lot of work on these buddy.
Thanks Mal. I went the extra mile on this one with the guitar simulating the portamento keys on Yes and the guitar on Wreck. This one was more fun to make than some of the others. I really appreciate it. I hope you're well. Take care and have a great weekend. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe thanks Buddy...
I like the list and when you talked and played the Edmund Fitzgerald intro...love the story telling in that song. Tragic yes yet the ship and crew live on. Awesome
They are all still fully intact, all 29 quite literally frozen in time. Terrible way to go but I would love to be preserved like that for eons.
I have thesame guitar Vangoa 12 string excellent guitar cant beat the price for sure.
Really like the nod to Styx very under rated. Really doing great job with these videos. Keep it going!
Take care. -Mark
Great list Mark, that was awesome man 😀🤘🎵🔥🔥🔥
Hey Adam. I REALLY appreciate the amazing support and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Please have a good evening and take care. -Mark
Thanks for all the great videos! "The Wizard" by Uriah Heep is another great 12 string song.
Hey James. I LOVE The Wizard. "So spoke the wizard in his mountain home". I had to be the only kid listening to Uriah Heep in college in the mid-90s. LOL. take care and be well. Mark
