    Bought a new D-18 for $325 in October 1969 the day I was discharged from military service. It aged like a Stradivarius. Plays and sounds better than many vintage 28s, 35s, and 45s I played in several different body styles. The tone is warm and the volume and bass response are very close to the D-28. Gave it to my son last year and got a 000-28, which is more suited to string bending for blues. There is no rational reason not to buy a D-18. I taught my grandson that you can never own too many guitars.

I've been to the Martin Factory many times having the privilege of living in PA and out of all their models, expensive and cheap, my two absolute favorites are the D-18 and then the D-15M after that. So beautiful in their simplicity and so soulful in their tones. No need for the flashy looks, all tone!

And that Triple Ought and the NEW D-18 (Reason#0) will sound better than any of them after 25 or 30 years, as their brightness tones down to fat, full, thick, sweet honey ... Course, you might not have 25 or 30 years ... Make sure you know Jesus before you go to the store ...

  • @herbiesnerd
    @herbiesnerd Рік тому

    Geez. I’m not worthy of your list, but I have a HD-35 and a 000-15M, but…….my first guitar I ever owned was given to me by my dad. He bought it brand new, recorded albums and travelled around the world with it.
    A 1959 00-18G. Martin does not make it anymore.
    It was stolen and my heart went with it. The HD-35 was to fill the emptiness my home felt without a Martin in it.
    I’m on the fence now for a 000-18. I don’t need another dreadnaught. I beyond love the 000-15M, but I want to see and hear that beautiful mahogany and spruce combo again.

  • @valbastiancontraio2795
    @valbastiancontraio2795 5 років тому +2

    Reason number 1 _you don't play the guitar - 2-you can't afford it 3-you prefer another brand 4-you are in jail 5-you don't like dreadnoughts 6 you can afford a better one 7 you don't want anyone to know you got rich 8 you prefer to buy it when you are a better guitar player 9 you don't want your young children to touchit 10 you already own one ....these are real reasons

  • @mojoefelix
    @mojoefelix 4 роки тому +2

    Honestly, my reason is that I already owned a Martin D-18 in the 1970's. I didn't like it and so I sold it. Decades later I decided I would never buy another Martin. Since realized it is just dreads that I disdain. So I have an Martin OM and a Martin 000 12-fret now and really do like them quite a lot.

    • @davidburch4165
      @davidburch4165 2 роки тому

      In the past I went through four dreadnoughts, including a Gibson, that soured me on the type. But I sat down at the local shop and played a D-18 and a Collings D-1 (pretty much the same guitar, but nearly twice the cost). The D-18 sustained longer and had less of that dreadnought muddle in the overtones. Now there is a new D-18 on the rack next to the OM and OO Martins I liked from the start. I just hope I live long enough and retain my hearing long enough to "play in" the D-18.

  • @Bluelightcheaphotel
    @Bluelightcheaphotel 3 роки тому +1

    Those are all good reasons 😆. I tell myself (and my wife tells me) the 28 is all I need too. But then there’s the matter of the Duesenberg Alamo lap steep with hand benders, a telecaster with sweet pedals, a couple amps, the upright bass and a new Collings mandolin. Plus European mics and necessary components on the signal chain.
    Stringed obsessions are no laughing matter. Good luck to you sir, and I appreciate the love for Garcia

      Been at this for 57 years and one of the best sounding guitars I have ever heard, was a really old Martin D-18 ... they have the ability to get thick-sounding, while retaining their highs, which maple and rosewood will not always do.

    Many prize pre-war Martin dreads for good reason. The benchmark for me is the 1st CSN album. Stills is holding one on the cover. The LP was released in 69. Martin sales went through the roof. In order to keep the lifetime warranty they had to thicken the bracing. The pre-CSN Martins sound much better. For about 10 years the quality just wasn't there.

    • @davidburch4165
      @davidburch4165 2 роки тому

      I have heard that 1970s Martins are to be avoided. There was a rumor that they had suffered a fire in their wood warehouse. I have always heard that story about the warranty relative to Gibson guitars, and I had a 1971 J-50 that proved it true. What an overweight, over-everything that old clunker was!

    This piece caught my eye because I just traded a carload of less-played guitars, basses & other stuff for a brand new D-18. My only regret is that I didn't do it 50 years ago.

    OK, that's too funny. I own a 1972 000-18, 1972 D35, and a 1987 Taylor 555 Jumbo 12-string. The best material investments ever and the prettiest sounds!

    Initially was offended by the title, thought "who could ever... must be a die hard Taylor fan"
    Finding myself coming back to laugh, absolutely hilarious. 👌grade A dad comedy

    His number one reason TO buy one should be the photo on the counter behind him. Jerry loved the D-18.

    Based on your playing I could heard some Garica infulence and I wasnt wrong, Jerry's photo in the back.

    Man oh man what I would give to be able to have any single one of your guitars. Just an intermediate "beginner " but how sweet it would be to hear myself strike a chord on something besides a cheap Epiphone and a crappy Takamine. It would be very motivational to say the least.

    Love the pic of Jerry in the background. And, as a true friend let me be the voice of reason… ‘go on, get it. You deserve it! It’s a whole other pallet of colors, it could be ‘The One’! You can never have too many guitars. She’ll never know. Tell her it’s mine and I’m hiding it from the IRS. You can say it’s actually a cheap Chinese knock-off , but a really good one.. it was a steal….plus, everyone knows the optimal number of Martins to own is : Optimus primus guittarus = n(martins currently owned) + 1

    Have had a love/hate relationship with Martin. Owned an HJ-28 that sounded like a wet cardboard box and a 000-16C bought "new" from Mandolin Bros. that required more warranty work than most Martin repair shops were willing to do. But I did have a nice 70 D-28 and an 82 OM-28. Became a Collings fan for a long while until Bill passed away. Now fixated on Bourgeois.

    I had one of them D-18s, hated it, the belly swelled so much that the truss rod couldn't deal with it so I traded it in for a Harmony Sovereign (this was in the seventies) which I didn't like so I traded that in for a hand-built Yamaha, which I still have, over forty years later, it plays beautifully, sounds great and I have never played a Martin that I thought was better.

      I own a Yamaha rosewood dreadnaught to replace a D35 that got stolen, and it’s perfectly satisfactory. Yamahas were good enough for Bert Jansch, so,they’re good enough for me.

    Oh my! Made my morning to watch this. There is so much serious debate (even in the comments) about which guitar blah blah blah. Thanks for the comic relief to the beginning of my long work day! And your guitars are beautiful... look forward to seeing your D-18! Have a great day.

    Hell yeah !!!! lol, I just started playing 6 months ago, bought 2000 Martin DM 4 months ago, the cravings grew and grew. And my appetite for more martins, taylors Gibsons, fender, etc., keeps me drooling over very nice guitar I see, maybe it's just a noob phase, but it sure feels like commitment to me

    Lemme see, got a used D-18 in 69, lost in fire; 1929 0-28 in 78; Lo Prinzi (like D-41 w/abalone) in 78; new D-45 in 89; 1952 00-18- rough condition, repaired by John Zeidler before his passing; mint 000-28 in 88; 1969 D-28S Brazilian rosewood; 1995 D-15S (much nicer playing then D-28S); 2007 HD-28, vast improvement; and finally, had to try one, a Blueridge BR-5060 John Jorgeson Signature Dreadnought. Need to look it up!!!
    I sold off four of the Martins 2 years ago.
    At 73 I’ve given up thinking I’ll ever be a great guitarist but I’m happy to see Martin making guitars better then ever and are better investments then the stock market. The 1929 0-28 sold for $10,000!

    Only reason I ever found was because a Gibson Advanced Jumbo was for sale next to it lol. I generally don't care for Gibson's but the AJ is a totally different animal
