Moog Source Analog Synthesizer from the year 1981
The Moog Source is a very nice synth and the first and only Moog to replaced the buttons with a membrane panel. And the first Z80 microprocessor-controlled Moog with patch memory.
The sound is fantastic, very deep and powerfull. I love the Sources incredible low end sound like the Moog Taurus 1. The best Taurus 1 emulation I have ever heard. In my ears better than the Taurus 3. The Source is perfect for very nice bass and lead sounds. For me one of the best monophonic analog synths ever.

Looks like an 80's Burger King cash register.
+Patrick Gideon lol
+Patrick Gideon LOL it Does!
lol I love burger King Too!!!
Patrick will be here all week folks! Try the veal!
That's "veally cheap". :P
Beautiful sounding synthesizer. There is nothing like the old Moogs. That bass is incredible. Would love to have one in my studio arsenal. ❤
A wonderful synth
My personal favorite Moog ever made. One of the greatest analog synths of all time. It's the sound, that's all that matters..
ALL the sounds I LOVE!!!
I pulled mine out adfter more than 20 years and it still sounds great! AMazing it has two 88 note real-time sequencers when most modern keyboards have 16 or 32 note step sequencers.
Yes. Fantastic synth.
I have one of these great little synths since 1981. Still works like a charm today. Doesn't get much love on the used market because you can only access one parameter at the time in real time. I used to beat the crap out of the PA back in the day when I used a low bass Taurus type of sound. It killed everything else available then ( and now). Only thing I regret doing is adding a 25Pole connector to it to add a bass pedal ( Rush fan :-) ) it worked but now I wish I had kept it in it's original state. I've started to use it again more lately and am thinking about adding an encore midi kit to it so I can control the filter ( I now use a Novation Bass station Rack as midi-CV translator).
I love my Moog source!
Great demo!
FYI this synth has been used for the bassline in Blue Monday
God I love that sound at 2:48 Internal Sequencer. I remember when it all become about the ability to sequence and edit wave forms.
VCO sync is killer!
+Dustin Cassidy :)
2:47 To me it's synth heaven, the sound, the arp, the sweep, mmmmmmm!!!
Sweet VCF/Sample hold, man. That's what a Moog will do for you.
Beautiful synth
+nep808 indeed
Great Demo. I normally watch your videos all the way through because I enjoy the playing regardless of the synth!
Always loved the modern look at the time it came out. I recall DM using one. Great stuff great synth. must be rare now. Thank you for sharing.
Fletch used to make rudimentary bass and funny sounds
I think it's one of the best ever
:)
Great Sound !
+tonytears1 :))
Sounds very awesome! Great demo as usual.
A lot of bands used this in the early '80s as a Minimoog substitute on the road.
yes
For which it was designed.
so, the mini was too big? heavy?
I think it would have probably been more for the patch memory than anything else.
Beautiful little machine there. Love these old synths. So much you can do with them still. Really open your mind to adventure of sound and music.
🙌
RetroSound question I wanted to ask? When you turn that knob, I see a white digit counter go up and down in numbers. Is that a digital display or analog?. Just seeing white digits don’t fit the time scale.
awesome! one of my favorite moog synths!
Another great demo of a classic synth !!! ;D
Hope you are keeping well mate ;D
Has to be my favorite MOOG
The membrane panel makes this thing look so rad.
Once again, nice demo.
Hard 80’s
That bass is blowing my speakers Marko thanks!:):)
One more moog baby, i had in the eighties. The times that never come back.
Nowadays this cute machines are not affordable anymore.
Great demo again Marko.
Wow, what a beast. You can sure get some insane bass out of that thing, hey?
Wow, lots of great sounds there - it seems pretty versatile.
Love the look and sound of this synth. Reminds me of early DM video clips.
Amazing filters!!!
this thing sounds so smooth omg
👍
Very nice again. Powerful sound!
what a beautiful machine....love it
Great again, i look forward to these 8 minutes every week, thanks :o) *****
love the raw sounds just like the mini :)
I remember a friend of mine had one of these YEARS ago, maybe late 80s, it sounded sooooooo good back then and I used to mess around on it, I really had no idea about Moog or Mini Moogs, it just sounded great. I would love to get my hands on one for my synth collection now.
A wonderful synth 👍
He is a genius. The large knobs of the voyager is dialing in those acid leads. Tb-303.
thank you
Ouaahh, celui là, il sonne grave! Great great sound.
excelente video ! muy buenos todos los ejemplos. Thanks you for all
RIP Matthew Seligman (Bowie/Dolby) who played one of these
Very nice! Thanks for the tip, I did not know about that, much appreciated!
KRAFTWERK!!!!!!!!!!Kocham te dzwieki.
Nice Demo.!!..I love my Source too, along with my Mini-Moog.
Awe dude this is awesome!
Wow, great-great-GREAT sounds!!!
@4darin5
Since the parameter buttons are single function and not menu driven, it is very quick and easy to edit by hitting a button then twirling the weighted knob.
Analog Best Sound ever ....i love it..
oh love that sound at 1.33 my fav one :)
Best demo on youtube!!! :)
Damn, that opening was sick! 😎
this is amusing sound. love it
Well, it looks much easier as it is to bring this little beast to shine that way !
Sounds very very huge . Plenty of bottom end meat in there too. Great little demo wish it was longer ;-)
thank you
Kick ass sounds!
It has a great sample and hold
You owe me a new T-shirt, because I drooled all over mine watching this! Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!!!
Holy crap this thing sounds amazing!!!
Damn! That thing kills!
Hört sich sehr gut an, einfach FETT!
I love this machine!!!! :-)
It's an excellent synth just like The Mini Moog and The Moog Prodigy. Jeremy Schmidt of Black Mountain uses one and the sounds he gets are amazing, for sure...
Agreed.
That is one of the best synths I have heard. Don't know why a voyager doesn't sound like that.
Großartiges Video! Wie immer! Ich verstehe nie ganz wie die Leute den Jupiter 4 als hässligsten Synth bezeichnen können. Ich finde der ist eine wahre Augenweide im Vergleich zum Source :)
Cheers
Dennis
This was used for the bass in Blue Monday!
yes
And I think it can do very well those Madonna bass lines, like Holiday, Papa don’t preach, etc.
What a sound!
I want one pretty please well done
New Order used these wonderful machines quite prominently, the bass from 'Face Up' is a particular favourite of mine.
A Moog with only two knobs? Now I've seen everything.
Great demo
Correction one as the large one is a alpha dial
OMG ! What a bass !!!
:)
Jean Michel Jarre from the eighties..not a comparison, it´s that it reminds me of that...
Can´t stop listening till the end...Your vids are great, not sound charging the listener, that´s very good to catch the differences between the sounds...they´re lot of them!!
And they´re like a vogaye in time...=)
I love it! :D
It's interesting how you have a certain way you like to play and demo the Moogs.
Mann, der klingt ja auch richtig geil. Schon der Anfang hat mich überzeugt
wirklich schöner allrounder!
Mein zweitliebster Moog
dat glob ick dir
Baloran The River is modelled after The Source!
yes
Would love to see Moog re-issue the Source; but a knob stricken version, with patch memory, it would be the ultimate monosynth. Also, it would obliterate the LP. Source had a chasis design far ahead of its time. Too bad it had to follow the knobless design trend. Wish I had one! Great playing Marko!
Sounds good...
Great sounds.R
Nice and squelchy!
@retrosound72 yours sounds stable !
Wow those sounds betweens 1m53 and 2m remind me of old Albator stuff or other animated form the 80s...
I miss my source. membrane froze up. the best synth i ever owned.
🙌🎹
Someone eBay is selling replacement membrane/controllers for $247.
enjoy this it real raw and gutsy and sweet too :) love it
These things are notorious for having problems with the membrane switch panel. But it was the first Moog synthesizer to have microprocessor control.
Delicious Bass
@metabog Oh, I can imagine. still looks very nice.
i hear 'Do you wanna Funk' by Sylvester in there..... these sounds you have crackin out this crackbox are amazing...
Nice REZ sweeps ;-)
+monsterjazzlicks :)
wish i had one of those
If Moog remade this synth tomorrow, I would go buy one...
@4:23 the oscillator sync sound is what this synth is really great at. :)

Sounds familiar (Autobahn-ish).
Was thinking the same, myself.. :)
And starting around 5:40 reminds me of Donna Summer, lol.
1:10 I always knew you could use keyboard tracking to play the filter resonance like an oscillator, but I never tried hard enough to do it right.
Around the 7 minute mark I'm hearing some sounds off of the 1983 Styx album "Kilroy Was Here," particularly the last couple of seconds of its lead single, "Mr. Roboto."
It's not even fair how much better analog sounds than digital.
Different. Not better or worster. I love digital and hybrid synths too.
@@retrosound72
I suppose a true musician knows when to use any sound and will use it when it fits a piece, but personally that full sound of analog just resonates with me.
No pun intended lol
@@zacharyteibel8580 Its a matter of taste like the most things
@@retrosound72
I use a combination of the deluge, mininova (my first synth), and this cool vector synthesizer that you’ll see red means recording use. One day I’m saving up for a moog
@destituteillusion - I love him! Totally underrated...
@KaslarProductions
It is almost as fast as having dedicated knobs...because the membrane buttons are single function buttons...no menus!!
I had a moog source and I never got it to sound as good as you did this one...mine mustve been a lemon or maybe it was user headspace and timing
In my favorite dream, I got this synth ...
