Big Black Racer Snakes COME RIGHT AT ME! (to Escape) | KNOW #40

- These snakes have a funny way of escaping! And you won't believe the size of the hole both of these big northern black racer snakes fit into.
I'm just chilling in a creek, recounting this fun encounter with the northern black racers (Coluber constrictor constrictor) from last month. I'll put a video into the works for how to find snakes in Virginia.
And most of the time these snakes will not strike unless you corner them and/or pick them up. They aren't venomous but any open-wound inflicted should be washed immediately and monitored for infection.

FYI - Black racers will often go for the closest cover when they are trying to escape. I just said it is "unusual" because it seems counterproductive to come at what may be a potential predator.
Awesome video! Can’t wait to see what’s next
Thank you Josue!
It's possible that you were close to its den....maybe the log was home.
I do believe you are right.
I walked into a nest once, the racer chased me agressivly, I could not walk backwards fast enough.
Yeah, they do have serious speed when they get moving.
I found this video because I had a black racer run across the yard straight at me and rare up like a cobra when he got about 6’ away. I’m looking for a video of that behavior.
Hmm...that's very cool. I had one specimen interaction like that with a black racer. Not sure if I have it on film.
Ive seen one of these snakes that was easily 16 feet long and 12 inches thick with head bigger than my hand (Im 6-4 tall). I saw it 16 years ago next to lake Allatoona in N Georgia. Jet black, very fast, very agressive when it realized I was close. It coiled up and its head was above knee height. It eventually hauled ass under a huge rotting tree. This was at Blankets Creek Bike trail. I still ride there and IM terrified when I go through that section of trail.
16 feet?! Well...I've never heard of a black racer getting so large. That would have been cool to see...though I do understand being a bit 'terrified' when you go back there.
Let's Go! can't wait for more. Enjoy your Evening :d
Thanks much!
omg this is the same snake that i have in my yard!!! it just goes into my AC vent outside! 🐍😳🤯
Nice! That's pretty cool you have one right at your home!
The boys and I spend hours trying to find snakes, we rarely find them, help!
lol the kids were excited you talked about them here
Haha, will do. Just got back from the woods today. Found some northern watersnakes, eastern wormsnakes and I accidentally stepped on a black racer! Dekay's will be tricky to find in this heat; I looked everywhere today for you guys! But I have some ideas. They are primarily nocturnal so during the day they are hiding. Oh, and FYI, I found a bunch of yellow bullheads in the creek between Lake Anne and Lake Fairfax. So I guess there probably are catfish in Lake Anne..just no carp.
What trail was that?
I'm not sure the trail there has a name. I just follow the creek from Lake Anne to Lake Fairfax. You can park at the Lake Anne Garden plot and there is a trail-head into the woods.
What would happen if one of the snakes got you? I know they aren’t venomous. Do they have teeth?
Black racers usually won't bite unless they are picked up. Then they bite repeatedly but the damage would really just be like rubbing your arm against a small thorny bush. They do have small curved teeth.
I got bit by one today it doesnt even draw blood
@@conner7004 Wait until u get popped by one about 6 feet long....lol
they nest in hollow logs....you were probably right on top of their nest
That's a great point Jeffrey. This was filmed when this species has clutches in N. Virignia.
@@KoawNature we have a lot of them up here in Ct. too and i only know that because i was reading a guide to snakes put out by the state of Ct. and they said to avoid hollow logs during certain times of the year because they nest in them
