The guy is a badass! Having only read about Nick in Modern Drummer, l met him in 2000 when SB opened for Dream Theater in Hollywood. Pssshhh, l love Mike Portnoy's playing, but Nick brought things up to a whole new level!
Sonor. German quality. Great drums that sound amazing. I love the older beech series most though (designer kit in the house here, even they don't make 'em like that anymore...). And Nick, what a drummer! Superb, lovely to watch him perform.
Rip it up nick! see you pimpin sweetwater alot, but never seen you fawking killin it onstage with a sweet, amazing double bass SONOR kit, awesome dynamic soloing nick!
I noticed that "S" Hoops are being used on this set. I have used them for years and have found that it really brings out the tone and focus out of the drums that other rims just don't.

Man I absolutely love Sonor kits! Thus far my favorite has been the Designer series with its huge hardware and lovely sounding maple! I love their line of hardware as it’a just sturdy and somewhat massive lol. I know the tom rack on the designer kit is super heavy
i have made my own suspension system , before sonor, to my peals.i didnt like the sst system neither the optmiount. so i took the pearls bt-3 tom bracket, drilled three holes in the shell and i used vidration dumpers between the shell and the bracket .perfect sustain and easy to tune and change heads
Really great video, Sweetwater. Inspiring, healthy dose of fantastic drumming, musicality and production. Sonors sound sweet indeed. Heard a few squeaks from 6:55. Pedals, throne or Nick's squeaky clean playing?
Sound of the kit live during that brief solo was KILLER. Looks of the drums...not so much. Surprised you did not go with one of Sonor's more exotic finishes.
DieselTrucker 2018 He doesn't dumb ass, did you watch the video? He says he doesn't. He plays a double pedal and made a comment about how he doesn't use two bass drums.
I will place an order today if Sonor comes out with some type of sparkle color for the SQ1...Preferably sparkle black but red, blue, yellow etc I will order now.. LOve the SQ1 sound but come on those current color choices are very limited.
I’m wanting to upgrade my Mapex Pro M to a pro level kit... I’ve been looking at the DW exotic woods, sonors designer series along with the SQ1’s, and Yamaha’s live oak kits... i had my heart set on the kit you’re currently playing but obviously wouldn’t need two bass drums and such. But I also saw a clip of Mapex’s Black Panther kit with reinforcement rings (I actually thought it was a Sonor kit at first.) I love how much attack the toms have but they sound so full of life! I was able to find a beautiful Sonor Designer series kit for $2000 but it only comes with a 10in and 12in rack, 16in air floor Tom, and a 22x16 bass drum. I’m trying to stay under 7,500$ which I only need toms and a bass drum as i have plenty of snares, stands, and great set of cymbals... anyone have any suggestions?
Hmm, with that budget you can get pretty much anything except a full blown custom kit, honestly I’d go for a Yamaha Absolute series set, or Tama Star drums
arthur kitchen zildjian is a very basic company because they were the original. They’re the baseline standard of cymbal making that was then improved on by companies like Meinl
I am a Zildjian guy since way back when. I'd go for a Yamaha Recording nowadays, if I had the dogh. These drums are about €1000 less than a YRC kit. Still think they are a bit too expensive, although not at all as expensive as the flagship SQ2. DW is way over rated and way too expensive. But again that is IMO.
I think Nick might be personally responsible for "selling" - or, positively influencing the decision to buy - the most drum kits worldwide, ever. :D Great sounding drums, particularly the floor toms. These weren't for me at this time, but for anyone looking for new sounds these videos continue to be a tremendous resource.
I can tell ya this. His demo video of the Sabian xsr series is what helped me choose to get them. And I have to say I am very pleased with my decision to do so.
I know that he said the kick drums were both the same size, but man do they look 2 inches apart in width. Maybe it's just the different resonant head logos.
Bahasa Drum Mapex and Sonor are owned by the same company so it’s possible Mapex artists can use Sonor and Sonor artists could use Mapex! Which is likely the case here with him using Sonor instead of Mapex.
I was lucky enough to try them out a few weeks back at my local music store and those bass drums are amazing. They do not need any dampening inside to sound astounding.
So, prior to his position at Sweetwater, Nick endorsed Mapex, Aquarian, Vic Firth and Meinl. As a representative of Sweetwater, it would be a conflict of interest to endorse any company. So to avoid favoritism, he has suspended his endorsements. The videos are made to feature the products sold by Sweetwater. Sometimes they send him out to the factories and do features in conjunction with his shows with bands such as this one, Big Big Train, or Spock's Beard (We toured the Pearl Factory in Nashville and they made a kit for the show and ultimately for Sweetwater). So, you will see him behind many kits in an effort to sell drums.
There are drummers then there is Nick. Outstanding!
Neil Aspinall wait.... so you’re saying that he isn’t a drummer?
After watching Nick I no longer consider myself a drummer. :p
Neil Aspinall did you know that he also plays acoustic guitar? Check him out with Spock’s Beard when there playing Snow live.

His work with the late Kevin Gilbert was master class.
That SNARE in the opening performance oh my god that's the best sounding snare I've ever heard
That 18" floor tom sounds flippn thunderous. Wow!! The whole kit is tuned up wonderfully. 🤘
man that must be one of the best sounding kits ive ever heard, and nick should be regarded as one of the best drummers of all time.
I really like Nick’s videos. Great drummer and spokesman. Plus, he makes great faces when he plays. Now, to start saving for a new kit....
A very musical drummer.
man... these drums sound unbelievable.
Sonor is the Best in sound and quality!! Another great video Nick!
I agree there’s nothing like a Sonor kit, imo, and Nick is a phenomenal player, as well.
makes me want a sonor kit even more
Holy sheeeet…THIS is how you demo a world class drum set. @NDV - you could train people on just the ‘how to demo’. Brilliant.
Nick's best sounding kit BY FAR!!!!!
Great playing...Great sounding drums...Continued success Nick, Sonor, and Sweetwater.
Sonor. German quality. Great drums that sound amazing. I love the older beech series most though (designer kit in the house here, even they don't make 'em like that anymore...). And Nick, what a drummer! Superb, lovely to watch him perform.
Most thunderous 18" floor tom in the whole universe (maybe even beyond)! 😲😲😲
Nick's metal mode: ON
Dave Gregory is one of my guitar heroes, and I'm very jealous that you get to play in a band with him! Very cool!

That's more often said of a quality die cast hoop, but favorite sounds are subjective.
Sonors floor toms sound fantastic!
Nick! Monster drummer!
Fabulous drums. Fabulous drummer. Fabulous band.
That 18 floor Tom!! Gut punch!! Badass!!
FUN FACT:
The Sonor's SOUND SUSTAIN SYSTEM was in collaboration with BMW !! :D

arthur kitchen zildjian is a very basic company because they were the original. They’re the baseline standard of cymbal making that was then improved on by companies like Meinl

Hi Nick - Any tips for tuning the 10 and 12 toms? - would love to know your batter and reso head settings (tunebot if poss). Thanks!
Are those cotton balls floating in them floor toms?? I never thought of doing that!!
Wow very cool video!!
nick is a really good drummer !
Those drums along with Drumshotz would be SO RAD
I think they are already awesome as is. It's all subjective to taste anyways man
man you can play!!!!!!!!!

What ride is that? sounds awesome
11:15 Premier drums were doing undersized shells for years
The high end Sonor lines sure are awesome, but I really can't afford them. Great top notch product, though.
GREAT !!!
Nick you rock!!!!! Say hi to Geoff Allen 🤘🏻
That snare is just eargaszmic
What do you have inside the floor toms? Small pillows?
Cotton balls!
I should have known that years ago.
It's SonOr, not SonAr Nick. 😉I have a Sonor Hilite, a high end kit from 1992
Now to save up the money to purchase one😁
Which mic is used for the Kick drum out
Cotton balls in the floor toms???
Slight muffling. It just makes it a tiny bit harder for the reso head to move, so the sustain is shorter.
It works awesome
Christian Ham Peragine works very well
Christian Ham Peragine they work wonders on the studio. Ask sully from Godsmack
Is that a sonor sq1 7 pieces shell pack with 2 kick drum? Yes or no?
Anyone know his cymbals specs in this video with Meinl?
😂😂that nick solo ...what a character....
Anyone happen to know what the sub mics on the kicks are? Not the typical Yamaha or DIY types I'm used to seeing.
Those are Solomon subkicks. :)
That ride is really nice, sounds like my 20" K, what is it?
Late response but it looks like meinl dark ride 20”.
I saw cotton balls in the floor tom am l right👏👏👏👏🥁🥁🇨🇦🇨🇦

G Harrison
D Carey
C Coleman
B Greb
Jojo Mayer

There's something squeaking - mabe is the chair or some of the pedals. But it's too obvious for a studio work.

Kicks were different in volume and attack. Odd
FanaticalDrummer Them both was tuned differently.
It's very difficult to tune both kicks exactly the same for many reasons! The reason of different attack is because both legs are different!
What is this "practice" you speak of?
The guy at the end needs to figure out what his adjectives mean...
No masks worn during spraying
Scary, isn't it?!!
One of these BD pedals needs some oil :-)
You would think they would come from the factory brand new with the proper amount to keep it from squeaking and feeling butter smooth
SonAr 🙄
SonOr !
None of the workers are using masks when applying drum shell finishes or protective coating! Ummm...that's dangerous.
It´s Sonor, not Sonar!!
Still prefer the sound of vintage.
A lot of today’s drums, sound a bit plasticy..
Great playing..
