- We here at DW are always searching for new and creative ways to offer drummers more sound possibilities from their drums. We know our ever-expanding and customizable menu can get a bit confusing, so John Good brought Thomas Lang into the studio to help explain the differences and technology behind our vast array of drum shell innovations. They compare 3 Collector's Seriers kits, a SSC Maple, Maple/Mahogany, and Cherry.

For anyone who plays guitar and drums will understand that John is the Paul Reed Smith of the drum world.
Bridges Holwell couldn’t agree more
Bridges Holwell so true
@Talon Eric hmmmmm... Brand new account, no content, but I'm sure there's nothing "shady" going on here.
I guess that makes Horst Link the Les Paul of drums…Both brilliant but VERY different sounding drums, I personally can’t stand the sound of DW toms but yet still believe they are some of the best made, Sonor is just different from all other drums in a fundamental way.
It's like the best Samuri meeting his blacksmith for the first time. Both are masters in what they do. But one can't do the other. But need each other, and have the utmost admiration for there fellow bond.
Thomas does the best drum demonstrations I've ever heard. He knows how to let you hear what the whole kit can do.
🥁
I love john's excitement for making drums. I'm not even a drummer but I love watching these videos! Thanks DW!

This is a pretty informative video - LOVE Thomas Lang's playing (10:15, 23:00, 29:00). Huge inspiration.
He is a Fantastic Drummer.
Thank God for John Good and all of the DW crew, I own a 2008 Collector's Series Kit and still to this day when I walk up to my kit weather it's on stage or at the rehearsal space....I get excited because I know what I'm about to experience...and that is sheer drum ecstasy!!!
These guys have sold me DW drums. I just wish that I could afford them.
✊😫😫😗🙍😎
mick griffiths check out the performance series kits, I got one and I am getting a 2nd one. Affordable kits and they are all DW. They sound fantastic
cuznred I agree with you..I own an acrylic and performance dw kit.love them both!!!
mick griffiths they are a great company, you can get stuff that's just as good for half the pirce!
me too
We are so happy to hear you are hearing the differences! This is the point! We will keep going on into the future! Thanks!
We couldn't agree with you more. Such a pleasure to work for people (John and Don included) who are so genuinely passionate about what they do. They live and breath drums and although it seems inevitable, we're glad it shows through. No need to call you names, we love your enthusiasm :)
Looks like you answered your other comment. Just to be clear, we absolutely offer many different wood options other than maple. All-Cherry, All-Birch, Classics (poplar/mahogany), Bamboo/Birch (Eco-X), & more
Glad to hear that. We enjoy making these longer videos and we're thrilled to see that most people enjoy them all the way through. We'll keep it coming!
Good enough! Thanks for chiming in!
I have a Collectors Series Custom Lacquer kit that I purchased in 2001 as my "holy Grail" kit. It cost an arm and a leg, but I sincerely don't regret the purchase. It's the best sounding and playing kit I've ever been behind. I've played a lot of really good kits over the past 35-ish years of playing, and I'm still glad I purchased a DW kit. Their drums truly are second to none IMHO. John and Thomas... thanks for demo of these unique kits!
:-)
Those drums sound amazingly well tuned.
Hats off to whoever did that!
the 1st kit was my fav, so deep and warm, the 8 inch tom sounded the best out of them all, just beautiful,, ps, john good is a class act :)
Awesome feedback thanks! Thanks for watching!
John and Don are so passionate and excited about sharing there experience in making the worlds greatest drums. It is a pleasure to watch and learn from there videos. Thank you for taking the time to make these video clips.
Love that DW and John Good did this video with Thomas Lang...they could not have picked a better drummer to demonstrate these kits. I especially love this particular video because of the demo on the Cherry kit. I just got my custom order DW Collectors Cherry kit, only instead of 3 rack and 2 floor toms, I have 2 rack and 3 floor toms. They sound as fabulous as the ones here. Thanks, DW!
We love you too and we're glad you asked! Before John Good made drums, he was a drum tech for some of the most famous drummers in the world. He became obsessed with what made some kits sound better than others. Bearing edges were a big culprit, and he would re-edge his drummers kits, but when he had those shells without hardware on them, he tapped them and realized that in many cases, a larger drum would have a higher fundamental pitch than the smaller ones in the kit...
Wow! Match made in heaven. The best drummer and the best drum designer in the world combined to make the best drum demo on the greatest name in drums. Maple/Mahogany is the undisputed king of wood drum sound. A very well thought out demo on the current technology used today in DW drum making. A work of art and Thomas Lang only proves the end result. I love my Candy Yellow over Giant Quilt Sapele.
John is such a down to earth man and I will never forget meeting him and sharing the same passion for fine wood and cutting edge drums and hardware
Nice ear bud choice! Thanks for your kind feedback!
This is so amazing that John understands the tone interval between an 8" & 10" to a 12" and beyond. I have always hated tuning those two smaller size toms in comparison to the others because you have to tune them down lower to get the tone right. The fact that he's willing to share with the world and amongst all DW's competitors says how confident he is and the vast knowledge he has when it comes to making drum shells. What a master of his art!
Videos like this are why I love DW. No other company gives as much info on how and why they make their drums the way they do. DW makes it easy to understand the differences between shell orientations and the woods that are used. Plus DW's sound great and their hardware is top notch. That's why I'll be picking up my new collectors ssc kit today!
glad to have ya :)
There's are some great drums out there, but we will never stop striving to make the best and most custom.
We will be here when you are ready! Thanks!
Beautiful shells and great playing Mr. Lang
I'm from Brazil, and I'm absolutely in love with DW drums. Mr. John is a genius, Thomas Lang is a monster that I love too.
My dream to the future is to own a blue DW kit.
I have watched to the video of the tour in the factory, it's amazing.
DW 's the greatest of the world.
We love you, too! Thanks so much for choosing the Performance series! We do not currently offer a 10x13 tom but you can definitely check with your local dealer on the pricing for an add on 18x22 bass drum. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Thanks! We can't wait to make you a kit!
John is such great teacher, too. I feel like I'm at the DW University lecture by Professor Good.
What an absolutely beautiful rendition to the instrument. Everything is great here.
His freestyle is very technical and flows so well....
Our fans and customers are the amazing people! thanks so much though!
Hey. Glad I stumbled across this. I'm 50. I've owned virtually every drum kit my lifetime. Year and half ago I bought a DW jazz kit 18/12/14 w/ matching snare and I have not looked at or thought about another drum kit. Not once. The DW Jazz line is as close as you can get to the vintage Blue Note sound. The tuning range is broad and the drums just sing. Finally I have a true musical instrument.
vinnyrac Thank you for being a part of the DW family! We are glad you love them.
Russ Hall! Thanks for liking the sound of these drums! We hope this comment gets to you!
Indeed it did! Thomas just has a way of making good quality drums sing
We got one for your when you are ready! Thanks for considering us!
Great stuff! I can't say I heard a huge difference between the first two kits but when John thumped that cherry shell the walls started shaking in my house! My Goodness! I really like these videos and I think you're way ahead of the competition in regards to sharing your manufacturing philosophies and processes! Keep up the great work.
I have a set of Design series...and yes...I know they're not the Collector's...but they have the HVLT shells and I've been absolutely stunned by how awesome they sound. You do get a massive sound out of the drums...even the little 8" tom I've got...thanks guys!
John Good is the research! We are very happy your found this useful! There's never enough info about shell making with JG inventing new shell making all the time!
These are by far the most beautiful sounding drums my ears have ever heard... I'm sold...
Passion and love for music, the relationship of the coatings with the sound, all involvement to achieve this, all very true, it showed me. Were 30 minutes video the most inspiring I've ever watched. Congratulations!
Wow! You guys handle some good research! Nothing's more helpful when you can see/hear the real difference between all these things. Cool!
They do know for sure! We are lucky to have them!
Much love to you and your drumming Master Lang.
sorry for any confusion. Indeed, Drum Channel is a completely separate entity, & non-partial to any one drum co. Similarly, Guitar Center, the people who hosted the initial live webinar, are non-partial. That said, DC is owned and run by Don Lombardi, founder/president of DW. & the DC studio is across the street from DW. So it's a convenient place to shoot video, especially live streams (as this initially was). We're sure DC would be happy to host a similar webinar for any other drum co.
These really are amazing sounding drums. As an audio engineer, I always know that when I'm working with a drummer who uses DW Collector's that my life will be that much easier. I also really hope that the next kind of wood that John implement's into DW's Collector's line is Bubinga! The knowledge about wood and drum shell's that John Good has would make for some amazing Bubinga Collector's!!
John's attitude and dedication is one of the main reasons I just ordered a DW drum set. I'm back playing after an extended break and I want good quality drums at a fair price. I'm thinking I made the right choice. Am very excited and hope my kit will be delivered within the week.
Thanks John for all you do.
Awesome. Thanks for the love.
John Good is the Les Paul of drums. I switched to DW almost a year ago and I honestly wish I had made the change sooner. I used a set of 5000 DBP for almost 20 years before I had to replace them. Soon after getting the 9000 DBP I decided to get a set of DW drums. Then soon after that I upgraded all of my hardware with the 9000 series. I am so much happier with my drum sound and set up. Thank you, John!
You're welcome, and I thank all of you at DW for being there!
All three of these kits look and sound the best!
WOW every time I here him play I say that was his best clip yet and then I hear another it’s unreal and you can see johns love and enthusiasm about designing drums I personally own PDP not quite DW but someday
You are welcome! So happy the explanation came through for you!
Thanks for your feedback! We'll be here when you are ready!
Great video John Good explains everything so well!!!
This is Outrageous...So informative! Thank you and greetings to John wood & Thomas Lang. I am soo in the right era with this guys!.. It sounds Amazing!
John Wood hahaha !
Philippe Pouliot LOL:D Good Wood
My passion for DW Drums just got higher after this...
Thomas lang is an amazing drummer. Honestly he would make any kit sound great. Its nice to see john so exited about their products. I think people like john are the reason dw make such great instruments. Nice informative video
Thank you Dw for making such beautiful drums, you always put a smile on my face, and I finally just got my first Dw kit, Its a Performance, im proud to play this amazing companies drums, and hardware!
Always with the quick wit!
We love him, too! He passion comes through and it's pure! He's an honest scientist of wood!
What an amazing sounding woods.
Great conversation! The M/M's will have a smaller amount of sustain which in a lot of cases engineers appreciate in a recording situation. Although the SSC will have a shorter amount sustain because of the lower tones compared to our standard maple. Both kits are all round performers for sure! Now it's just up to you!
I wish that a guitar company could broadcast those "webinars" (or something similar). This is so informative and absolutely awesome to see how wood works in order to get great tones and to hear the difference between grains etc.
Nice to see how the work is done on the drum shells, im a cymbalholic and not so long ago i've became intrested on how drum shells are made and how the diferent . DW by far has the best shell options and a awesome sound. Im huge fan for a long time and that won't change. Some day i will be a proud owner of a DW SSC kit with a 14" x 8" Colectors series Black nickel over Brass snare. The best metal snare sound i've ever listen thank you for making such awesome drums.
Always loved DW drums, and I always will! You guys are amazing! :D
Man I could hear the difference between each kit! I love this video. John Good thanks for being so dag-on detail! "Let the drums breathe!"
Favourite : Cherry
2nd Favourite: Maple Mahogany
3rd Favourite: Maple
Try to check out the Cherry/Mahoganny, best kit I've owned
Future projects are implemented and installed every day but the sound world. For these questions give an optimal result for this great passion famous construction of drums. I love them.
We appreciate your enthusiasm!
Awesome thanks! We are very happy that you are liking the sound of the drums here. :)
Wow!----I wish I could afford such amazing instruments!!---truly amazing.
Eco-X is made right here in our factory just like the Collector's Series and the Performance Series! We'll keep that mind for a video piece!
Thanks so much for your honest feedback! We are happy that you have trusted our judgement on shell making. We are ready to make you a kit when you are ready for one!
Definitely could hear the different tones and can’t wait to make my next kit a DW! That was a fascinating video!!
Thank you
The middle kit wins hands down for me. What a sound!! Excellent film. Thank you. All the best.

These are hopefully the last set i own . Im saving for them now. These are every drummers dream. . Ive never had the opportunity to own a real high end kit these are my dream. God bless dw.
Beautiful!
This is actually so interesting. I didn't know just how much the construction of the shells plays a part in the sound. I love drums :D!
Another reason to be proud of my great state Michigan!!
It's always satisfying when you become closer to understand what exactly you want from the drums and kit in general and how to achieve it. I bet you had experienced a lot of cases "i want don't know what and don't know how" :) So you're damn right - There's never enough info :) Once again thank you for this video - now we know more about how it works!
Amazing. Thanks for this very informative video.
Unbelievable technique of drum shells making!!! Great innovation! 👍👍
🙏
Glad you are liking it! Thanks so much!
Thank the Big Guy for you our fine customer! We are very happy to hear your kit is going well for you!
SSC Is my favorite right now. DW is by far my favorite drum company! One day i will have a DW kit! One day! Thank you DW for doing what you do i love you guys!
The sound is simply Incredible!
John Good is the sweetest dude ever.
Thanks! Glad you are loving it. You have the sizes correct but the shell configurations are a HVLT (Vertical Low Timbre™ with a horizontal outer ply).
The mahogany set is so beautiful.. Love that wood!
We appreciate your comment! This would go well with guitar making for sure!
Great stuff. Still working towards my first DW kit.
no offense, but i scrolled through the video to Thomas Lang's solos, your drums sound magical, i have a pair of high quality head phones, and the resonant, warm tones of the drums shine through, well done DW !
