Indeed, the Sonor Signature Special Edition kit…12-ply Maple shells with Bubinga inner and outer plies. The series was introduced in 1992 and was around for only a few years. Todd Sucherman played a Sonor Signature Special Edition kit on the Styx 1996 tour - he still has it.
Eine ganz hervorragende Arbeit! Respekt. Man kann Eure Zuneigung zu SONOR!i deutlich spüren. Ihr habt auch bei vielen meiner Sonor-Restaurationen hervorragende Leistungen gezeigt. Sehr empfehlenswert! Topp Gruss Arne Suter!i
I'm a big fan of "repair/refurbish" and I love what you've done here. End result could be viewed as expensive for a 'used' kit but having just put together a couple of sets without much overall knowledge or expertise, resulting in a lot of incremental trial and error purchases, I'd say the price is worth that standard of refurbishment. Salutes.
Very cool conversion! 🤩👍 And I had several of the Sonor brochures shown in this channel's videos as a teenager and a big poster of the image with the Signature kit at 0:44 on my wall 😊
Cool project and great video! I really love your sense of humour, and the german/english speaking voice with the small but delightful pronunciation problems. Beer/bear
I’m a proud owner of a humble Sonor Force 2001 kit. I customized it a little bit with some additional tom mounts and a floor tom from Pearl. I bought it in early 2002. I still play and record with it to this day.❤
AMA ZING!!!! I have an original 80´s Sonor Lite kit sizes 10", 12", 13", 14" rack toms, 16" floor tom, and 22" bass drum. I had all Signature stands. 2 x double tom stands, snare stand, 3 x semi boom cymbal stands, and 1 x boom cymbal stand. I still have 1 x of the double tom stands, but sold all the others for around 1800€. I still have ALL the drums. They sound amazing. Especially in the recording studio. i´m now a proud Pearl/Zildjian endorser, and own a 7 piece Masters kit, and a 5 piece Crystal Beat kit. :)
I had a set of beech performers. It's kind of cool to think there was a time when sonor's "budget" line was basically the exact same thing as the Phonics but 6 ply instead of 9. And what's even more interesting, in my opinion anyway, is that the performers actually kind of aged better than the phonics as the thinner shells on the toms are closer to a modern sound. Incredible drums if you can find them.
1:50- The Gold Satin, it definitely was a German look and had the same appearance as another German designed Drum company. Gretsch. These Satin Flame covers were found on Gretsch in Blue, white, Aqua, Yellow, Green, etc.
Great video informative. I bought an old teardrop beech 3 piece with the 20 bass drum 13 by7 tom and 16 by 15 floor that was rewrapped years ago in a gold sparkle in France I am told by the session drummer I bought it from.
Veeeerrry loooonnng lol! The late 1980's/early 1990's ha!! I grew up on the drum catalogs from this era (the power Tom era) in middle school through the late 90's after high school.
No sir from now on it is and will be 🍺 ing edges . This decree has been announced by the king of Texas me . Matthew Alan Kitchens who might I add is of German descent on my good side . Cool video cool drums . Great dry german humor and edit was so fluid. Nice. Job to all involved.
I don't know how I got here (from a Ludwig drums artist) but awesome video!! I have a Sonor Force 3005 series kit, the Jungle Kit. I was once heavily considering investing in another Sonor kit. Great info to have
🍺 Prost!
I bought a new Bubinga Heavy 12/13/16/22 kit with hardcases and the 14*8 chrome snare in 1985. Great drums but too high and heavy to take on a gig or for recordings. I traded them for a Designer + Euro in the early 2000s and later got a DW collector although I kept the Signature Snare. DW hardware is cheap in comparison to Sonor and ages fast. But the whole DW kit weighs about the same as just the Signature Heavy 22" kick drum 😂 Currently enjoying a Tama Hyperdrive.
This is a beautiful kit! I've always liked the Signature and Phonics set but the prices that I've seen on some websites have been a bit high for my liking. This would make a great alternative if you want that nice finish and sound of Sonor!
Excellent video! Seriously great stuff, you deserve more subscribers! And don’t feel bad about pronunciation, I know for sure that couldn’t pronounce a lot of German words, and I definitely can’t speak German as well as you can speak English!
I’ve been collecting Phonic and Phonic Plus ‘orphan’ drums for a couple of years and refinishing them all to resemble the ebony finish. Can anyone comment on the sound difference from the Phonic Plus to the Signature Heavy Beech?
Great job, beautiful drums. It would be interesting to hear how historically the 18" became the 16" deep size. Personally, I like the sound of the 18x14", the 18x15" has some extra volume and low end, but the 18x16" ends up being too loud for a bop kit, and too small for a rock set. It's a special sound, but problematic in terms of tuning range and definition. Steve Gadd in Ricky Beato's interview shared some insights about bass drum depth. It's a theme which people don't talk much about.
17:38- It's to bad you couldn't have reproduced these mufflers. Drums today don't have these and in my opinion made a great addition. With a change in music style in a single performance, you could change the sound of the drum using these. For the Gretsch drums they were called tone controls, but were really just muffles for the heads.
thanks for the comment! Many sets on the used market have the mufflers removed because people use them I guess, so if you want to restore a kit with the original mufflers, they can be quite pricey now. As far as I know the original signatures had these external mufflers that were clipped to the hoops and muffled the head from outside. Theoretically they could also be added to this performer set 😁
@@stdrumsgmbh I have heard that Kits were being manufactured without them any more because the hardware supposedly reduced the sound of the drums as well as added rattles as they wore out/loosened. Plus, drummers were finding other ways to muffle the heads that were cheaper even if not as good lookin. Also didn't allow flexibility of different music styles. I will agree, the cost to replace any of them any more is high.
thanks for the comment! Sonic series got great shells aswell, however the hardware is not regarded as so great. We got quite a few emails from customers who asked us for replacement FT-legs and BD-spurs for these Sonic drums. Also the used Performer drums are not expensive in Germany - probably the same price category as Sonic Plus on the used market
@stdrumsgmbh noted. My Sonic Plus are "industrial. strength", overbuolt. I like the bright, aggressive punch with quick decay, slightly harsher sound than warm maple.
we removed the old wraps which decreased the diameter and the veneers are very thin (way thinner than the ply layers on a shell, and even thinner than most drumwrap), so there was no need to compensate really. Sonor shells are a bit smaller anyways, and the lugs got movable inserts, so I would say up to 1mm additional OD should be no problem.
19% sales tax!!! Omg, I almost chocked! The next day someone tells you about countries that have free health care, guaranteed employment, etc… Tell them they will have to pay 19% sales tax
😅 compared to the rest of europe, 19% in Germany is actually on the lower side. If you order from outside of the EU, we will not charge any sales tax though, but it will go through customs in your country
😁thanks for the comment! it's not him though - similar german accent but a different person. But of course we would be open for a Benny Greb appearance in our videos 😂
Are you aware????.... that the rack tom's lower shell edge is right on top of the snare stand and with no lower structural support of that drum's shell (since it's an open concert tom- no hoop/head) will cause that drum shell to warp(even possibly crack or weaken) just from playing it in this position. You claim to have wisdom in buying drums, and from another drummer who's played and collected for nearly a 1/2 Century - I'd think twice about buying it or anything else from you. That's something you'd see someone who's oblivious to maintaining a drum set would engage in, and from anyone who's ever dealt with buying drums that have a warped or weakened shell.......I won't even go there
The video was uploaded 11 months ago and is 24 minutes long - at least give us the timestamp of the drum you are talking about, I am not aware of a concert tom on a snarestand in any of our videos, so please let me know what you mean. Also we don't claim to "have wisdom"... I don't know where you have that sentence from.
Where do you purchase yhe wooden wrap material? I tried to rewrap my teardrop years ago here in the States but could not find a place that sold wood that thin. 1"8" was the thinnest, and I could not find Scandinavian birch like I wanted. Only maple. But 1/8" is quite thick, especially on a teardrop 3-ply shel that is probably less that 1/8". I ended up not wrapping it at all, not wanting to choke the vibration of the shell. Also, what kind of glue do you use to apply the wood wrap?
we actually offer thin wooden veneers like that in our shop: stdrums.com/en/c/wrap/real-wood-veneer they come with a thin nonwoven layer on the back that makes it easier to use them. The ones in the video where made without this nonwoven, but we can't sell them individually unfortunately. If you are looking for a certain type of wood veneer that is not in our shop you can send us a picture of the type of finish you are looking for via email, then we can check if we can source a veneer like that. For the veneers with the nonwoven layer we recommend the same 3M Scotch-weld 30 glue that we recommend for our drumwraps. You can use our contact form on the bottom of the page at stdrums.com thanks!

As a Sonor owner, so glad you did this.
My first set was a Sonor "Swinger" in 1972. I have only the 16" tom. Now I most use three Sonor Steel snares.

I've purchased a lot of stuff from ST drums! I have always been satisfied. Great work on the Sonor drums!
Love Sonor , iv got a Prolite in Tribal Red , superb kit 👌
Oh man that's so tasty. Truly shows how passionate you are about this. Can't wait to order some stuff from you!
thanks a lot for the nice comments! We are looking forward to the order :)

A pleasure to watch this clip from my favorite drum parts seller. And especially as Sonorlite and Phonic owner, this was very interesting

yes, these satin colors are really cool! We also sold quite a few of these wraps in the 90s, however they are scratched pretty easily unfortunately
Great video informative.
I bought an old teardrop beech 3 piece with the 20 bass drum 13 by7 tom and 16 by 15 floor that was rewrapped years ago in a gold sparkle in France I am told by the session drummer I bought it from.
All with internal dampers. No matching snare yet!
My first kit was a beech shell Performer-great set! I now own an original Signature kit and I’d never sell it! Great video guys

I remember those drums from the 80's. I am a Yamaha guy but if I wasn't, that was the set I would want.
Sonorlites were one the best drumkit lines ever created. And the bass drums legs are a masterpiece of design.

amazing work!!
❤ danke 🙏🥁🔥
The Horst link sounds great, but who will use it hard on stage with all the live dings and dongs ?
Should have stayed with both 22 bass drums for a Steve Smith vibe 🥁
Hell Sonic Plus drums shells sound as good as those costing thousands more, without the bling. I'm all in.

haha, Prost!
Not sure why someone would pay that much for cheap poplar drums, no matter how nice they look.
well actually these are 6ply beechwood shells - only the 10" and 14" were poplar in this kit
Guudes Englisch fer än Pälzer - Reschpekt!

Sonor drums are for German millionaires and not even possible for an American drummer’s budget.
I am an American and an original Signature bubinga owner.
I'm American, and I own a Sonor kit. 😊
