    This video tutorial was requested by one of my subscribers! I will show you how to create glass using Arnold's aiStandardSurface in Maya 2018. We will go over shaders, transmission, opacity, and more.
    *Edit: water has a refractive index of about 1.3333*

      I agree with you. I learned more from UA-cam than I ever did at University, but that has a lot to do with independent learning and the fact a tutor can't really compare with an endless sea of online resources. Kudos to content creators like this though :D

      Get used to it, Its how I earned my degree, I learned more through youTube and Books, the teachers and assistants were fairly useless.

    Thanku for the opaque option
    As my materials inside the glass get darks render output and I was trying everything I think it was due to some colour defect in material but it was the glass . Just close the opaque and done 👍👍

      That's a common problem, alpha. Opacity is used to not see anything, versus transmission is for glass. I'm happy this was helpful!

    Tutorial is great, I just wish the volume would be louder by default. Had to crank it up a lot to match my normal volume settings.

    Outstanding video as always Monica, two things, however:
    1. Your link to the 3D file leads to your website front page, not to the video of glass. ;)
    2. It would be really nice to know your lighting setup for the videos, since trying this ourselves in our scenes we've absolutely no chance to mimic the lighting :(

    Hi ! Great tutorial, I've learned a lot from your channel ! Thank you. Just one question... I tried to do the same on a simple glass, just to experiment, and the tip of the glass is grey. No matter the hdri or the things that I put around the glass, it doesn't change... how can I fix it? Thank you again!!!

    for what do i need to use the "weight" option in "base"? at first of the tutorial i thought it was because all glasses must be with weight, but then you used it to help the scratches texture to be white, im a ,little bit confused hehe

    Bottom of the glass is so dark, finding solution for(changing ray depth didn't helps )

      There are multiple reasons... could be that its reflecting the shadow, or the glass model isn't accurate to real life. Accuracy makes a difference in Arnold!

      The age old problem, Thomas. I recommend you export a separate AOV for transmission and composite that in. :)

    I still can't get my glass models to cast shadows. I think it's due to the arnold lights I set up (to make a more low key 3 point light setup). Using a skydome light it does a little bit better job but not as good as this video. Just weird limitations I guess.

    How can you get the alpha to render out? It´s opaque, doesn´t work for post compositing.

    One question, why in the bottom of the cup of glass it´s so dark?

      Hi Jhonatan, thank you for your comment. The glass appears to be dark because it's refracting the shadow at the bottom of the glass. It could also be that the mesh is not perfect in comparison to real life, so it could be warping the refractions a bit. Another reason could be the values for the render are no high enough.
      Sorry that it's an eye sore, but I hope the tutorial helped you understand a glass shader.

    Most glasses have Blue or Green tints around the edges. How do you add those tints while keeping the main glass surfaces clear?
