The song is actually about how people look at you differently based on how you die. For example if someone died from drug overdose everyone would say that they were a bad person and deserved it. Even if they were actually a great person. The meaning is shown in the line "I cry when angels deserve to die".

Like the other commenter said, it's about the judgement people have to rhose who OD'd or other non typical/self destructive ways to die. So he still cries when a good person (angel) dies even if others say they deserved it. The forsaken bit is a biblical reference to what Jesus said while on the cross and could be interpreted in the song to the OD'd persons perspective of why their life is forever tarneshed (forsaken) of the good and loving things they have done by the one act of dying "wrong".

in your part about "others say they deserved it" to me that's what the "self-righteous sui***e" is about in the song, they're acting morally superior and thus committing "self-righteous sui***e", they're harming their own moral fibre, it's another song that has many layers of meanings even if the writer didn't intend them. great song.

    • @erinj8621

When I first heard this song, because of the part where he's quoting Jesus on the cross I thought the whole song was from the point of view of Jesus... "I don't think you trust in my self-righteous suicide" would refer to him choosing to die on the cross and either people not believing it was real or in him or whatever. "I cry when angels deserve to die" was referring to, like, people who were doomed to hell if he hadn't died for their sins.
But I read later that the angels part referred specifically to sex workers who were killed and then people said they "deserved it" for living a risky lifestyle.

Guitarist Daron Malakian, who wrote it with lead singer Serj Tankian, explained: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'"

The whole middle 8 with the "father, why have you forsaken me?" bit was literally taken from a religious book that was in the studio when they were recording the song, as Serj didn't have any actual lyrics for that section, so he took the book from the shelf, opened it to a random page...and that was that.

The original song title was "Suicide". There's rumors that the label made them change it. Thus the word play with "Chop Suey(cide)". In the beginning of the track you can't faintly hear the singer saying "rolling suicide" which is obviously him saying what song he was recording at the time.

I don't know what your usual taste in music is like, but I love it when people are able to appreciate rock and metal music, especially if it's not normally the type of stuff they listen to. I think System of a Down is especially great for this, because not only is their music incredibly high quality, but it also incorporates a lot of social commentary and makes you think, and I find I tend to gravitate that sort of music. Other bands I like that do this are: The Offspring, Bad Religion, and Rage Against The Machine.

The song should have been titled “Suicide” but because of controversy on that title they were asked to change it, I think by the record studio. So they decided to literally “chop Sui…(cide)” in half. The new title “Chop Suey” also sounds similar to a piece of the rhyme: self righ…”teus-sui”…cide.
In a scene of the music video you can see the lead singer and others in the background actually eating “chop suey” looking sarcastically annoyed.

@antimatter2380 Explained it perfectly. The stigma against people who die from overdosing ss, and such, like its the "wrong" way to die. Like its their own fault and did it to themselves, so people act self righteous and like those angels (you die and become an angel) who die in those ways, somehow deserve to die. "When angels deserve to die" thats what that line means. Very deep lyrics. They have a great catalog but i suggest using the lyrics for a bit because its so hard to understand them lol. Great reaction!

As far as the line about why have your forsaken me, they opened the bible and that was the first line that they read and it was fitting because of how people turn you away when you are struggling with addiction.

The song is about how people are left behind, forgotten, and can barely function. The parts where they their keys on the table to go out, put on makeup, etc., but couldn't but they wanted to.
Then, when they end their lives, they're looked on like they're narcissistic, selfish, but when they asked for help, then when they went quiet but were still here, no one gave a damn.
Then they kill themselves, and they're forsaken by their families, which is even more fucked up because they had been forsaken before that, it's just that no one had realized it.

The fact that the meaning of the song is hard to grasp is because they were forced to change it's title. Basically, Chop Suey! was never meant to be the title. They put that as a title, because their label though the original title touched upon a topic that was far too heavy for the rest of the album. The original title however exposed the meaning of the song.
Another thing about this song is that it has two points of view. One is a narrator of sorts speaking from a neutral POV, and the other is the person who is directly related to the theme of the song. The so called "angel who deserves to die". And that line "Father Into your hands I commend my spirit", is being said by the angel who deserves to die as well. Meanwhile the main part of the song that comes before the chorus is the narrator, or rather it's just the song itself talking about the theme.
Anyway the main theme of the song is about suicide, but not just suicide as a whole but rather about the public perception of suicide. And the different outcomes depending on who is the one to die.

Really enjoyed watching your reactions, new subscribe. This song was originally going to be called Suicide, but the label didn't like it, so half of suicide is sui, or suey. Chop suicide in half, chop sui.
It's supposed to be about how the same person can be perceived completely differently depending on how they die. It's about hypocrisy, too. The explanation is long-winded, but it's about a drug addict committing suicide and people blaming the drugs, even though they take the same drugs. If I understand it right.

The forsaken part: you can kill YOURSELF or die in "peace" whatever happens the choice is YOURS. The song is basically about how it's more sad when someone ""takes their own life" because they are addicted to drugs/alcoholor W/E. it's just sad because you had a "choice" but you "chose" not to firght :( Listen to the lyrics again....

When you're suicidal people don't understand. Some religions will tell you that you're going to hell. It usually takes a long time before your even there. They say you're supposed to care about other people and your suicide would be harmful to them. But the longer you live you realize it just would be inconvenient for your family and friends. There's never help there to stop your pain but there's always people afterwards to tell you how selfish you are or that they would have helped when you know clearly they didn't because you asked for help way before this ever happened.

I feel like it's about the irony of the concepts in our culture that mirror religious Dogma, such as the story of Jesus, whom had the power of God behind him, and elected to not strike back against those who persecuted and killed him, thus making his death a "self righteous suicide". For he loved mankind so and knew of our ignorance "they know not what they do", and he knew that God the father values each human soul as precious treasure. At the end of his cross, just before God took his spirit from Calvary, even Jesus - the only perfect human - cried out to God in anguish in his suffering with "Why has thou forsaken me?", but the Bible says that his PHYSICAL suffering on the cross was miniscule when compared to his SPIRITUAL suffering, where God briefly allowed his only begotten son to truly be alone with Satan, which I feel is what caused him to - just ever so briefly - doubt our fathers' protection.

Their record company wouldn’t let them give the song the title they wanted so they named it “Chopped Suey”. I heard they are talking about the Armenian Genocide and that the perpetrators refused to take responsibility for. The band members are Armenian Americans. This what’s I heard - correct me if I’m wrong.
