Congrats to Rage Against the Machine. They are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 23 in November. They absolutely deserve it. Boomers are still in power so things haven't changed yet. But one of my friends who lived through the 92 LA uprising said he was encouraged to see young white people part of the 2020 LA uprising. In 92 white people could write the Rodney King beating off like he was resisting arrest but in 2020 with camera phones showing the cold blooded murders of George Floyd, Laquan McDonald, Walter Scott, Ahmaud Arbery, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, and so many other black men at the hand of the police it's not something white people can excuse any more. True, they made the text clear, simple, and narrowed down to just a handful of different lines, and they repeated them because they felt the context and situation required it. Maybe I’m weird but I love watching videos of black folk hearing Rage for the first time because there are two reactions. First is musically, they think “oh this is chewy, this is funkier than I expected.” Second is lyrically where they think “wow, nothing has changed since the 90s.”

My favorite thing about this song: In the live version he alternates the recorded verse lyric with the line "some of those that burn cross, are the same that hold office". My second favorite: In the UK there is a talent show like American Idol called "X Factor" and each year the winner would always release their first single just before Christmas and so you would have this bland sterile pop song at Christmas number 1 in the charts. One year some people started a campaign to beat them by everyone buying this song on digital download which counts and they won! To show their support for the campaign and thank the British public for involving them, Rage played a free gig there the following year. They also donated the proceeds from the digital sales to charity. The following year at least three separate campaigns were run on similar lines but they all proposed different songs so no single protest song had the full backing and thus the x factor winners took over again.
I heard it recently stated that this song's lyrics aren't a "song" they're a protest chant. That's why they repeat and build. Plenty of others have commented about the inspiration of this, the acquittal of the officers in the Rodney King beating.
This song also made the number 1 Christmas song in 2009 as a response to the boy band generic and formulaic stuff being pushing by X factor and the voice sorta shows. They played live for being voted in, and asked not to use any bad language in it, but the live feed cut at the end of the performance
Imagine this. Some months ago I went to my very first ice hockey game in a fully packed arena (19.000 people). I enter the stands, I get blinded by the brightness of the ice rink, I get overwhelmed by the omnipresent victory-thirsty crowds and visual effects...and as I set my first step, this very song started playing and it echoed across the entire arena. At that moment I thought I could fly.
I always sung the song as “those that died, were justified, reppin the badge, and their cloaks of white.” Zack and Tom don’t f*ck around with the lyrics. Check out “Down Rodeo.” That’s fire.

RATM were one of the best bands to come out out the early 1990's and aso possibly one of the most important. Zacharias Manuel de la Rocha sang about serious matters that were way ahead of their time. His words still resonate today. Saw them play loads of times in Ireland 🇮🇪 back in the day and always fantastic. Don't know if you ever heard the legendary story about them playing live on the BBC which was the biggest TV Channel in the UK. The only condition was that they couldn't sing the "F-You" part of the song. Obviously it was all going well..... until it wasn't. And RATM went all out. Their sound was cut and that was it. And that was their Xmas Spectacular 🎄 😂 Here's the link. Link so enjoy. ua-cam.com/users/shortseo34LFFWNPQ?feature=share
Rage is an amazing band, you'll have lots of fun with these guys. 3 albums full of phenomenal music and powerful messages. Never heard a bad song from them, everything requested by them will be great. For example, DOWN RODEO TESTIFY TAKE THE POWER BACK i suck for remembering song names. Watch lyric videos when you can, as most of their songs have far more words, and try to see at least one live video of theirs of you can, as they're really fun to watch. Have fun with the band, it's a great rabbit hole to go down.
I always get a kick out of people reacting to Down Rodeo...It just punches you in the face...but if you stick around you see the depth of the flow and how deep the problem goes...
I was lucky enough too see them live many times and there was nothing like being in a mash pit with this track playing. This sums up the rebellious 90's teenagers and how we all felt about "the system". This track focusses on the "forces" but it really comes from the top (politicians - police - media, etc) but we raged against any narrative that was being told too us and we were all united and loved each other (no matter who what where, you were from) - so we would say F U we wont do what they told us! It is a pity that so many people are caught up with what they hear on CNN / MSNBC etc and think that we are divided when, in reality we are all the same race (the HUMAN RACE). Much love.
As a white guy, I didn’t really understand RATM lyrics as a teenager in ‘96 when I bought “evil empire” on CD. I grew up in a bubble but 30 years later it is terrible that there is still nothing being done to fix this.
I have a UA-cam Hobby. It's looking for videos titled "REACTS to Killing in the Name of" and waiting for the moment when they realize what the song is about. This didn't disappoint. RatM has been speaking truth and putting it to killer tracks since 91. Hell Yeah!
I do the same thing! The look on their faces when they realize what the songs are about is magic. RATM were serious and important... Sad it's still relevant today.
"Killing in the Name" appears on the 1992 self-titled debut album. It features heavy drop-D guitar riffs and lyrics protesting police brutality inspired by the beating of Rodney King and the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
My drivin' music back in the day...still is ,come to think of it! Best music to drive to when your trying to get somewhere AND when your needing to rage against injustice! Still reasonates in these times!
I'm so happy you reacted to this song and I just found you, subscribed and liked the video. I look forward to more of your reactions for sure. Thank you.
Honestly, these are prevelant feelings in the US and UK alternative scene except that straight edge movement in the US. His words are pure truth and he had the passion to show it. We love him for it. Imagine how many reactions he's had since UA-cam was up! I hope he watches them!
It both saddens and angers me that RATM are perhaps even more relevant now than when they first came out 30 years ago. Then again, speaking truth to power will always have a place in society.

. He was listening RATM &'Korn with me, since he was in my womb.
Lol you got the stank face on until you realized how angry the lyrics were making you feel.
Love me some Rage.
Great reactions bro!
Hell ya, militant metal, what a time to be alive. Saw these guys in concert multiple times, man you're gettin in that mosh pit!
His face when he realizes they're saying F you I won't you what tell me. Priceless!
I love this reaction. I was in high school when this came out and I can honestly say that it affected my attitude. Times havent changed much but I hope that those who grew up this on our playlist keep showing up and showing out. Not.under control!
Maybe the best RATM reaction I've seen yet! Now you have to do "Bulls On Parade". It's required listening.
Maybe I’m weird but I love watching videos of black folk hearing Rage for the first time because there are two reactions. First is musically, they think “oh this is chewy, this is funkier than I expected.” Second is lyrically where they think “wow, nothing has changed since the 90s.”
They were huge in the 90's!
I have been going down the rabbit hole of your reactions today and I am so Happy I found your channel. I love all the genres you do and how you really listen and take in the lyrics and just the Pure Joy and Enthusiasm you have for music❤❤❤
Loved the reaction. Do Bulls on Parade, Wkae Up, and Bullet in your head next. Dudes were way ahead of their time and it sucks that their songs are still relevant. We need to learn
One of my favorite alt rock songs of all time. So glad you loved it, too!
Oh yessssssss! One of the absolute best from My era of folks!! Hell effn Yes!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
I heard it recently stated that this song's lyrics aren't a "song" they're a protest chant. That's why they repeat and build. Plenty of others have commented about the inspiration of this, the acquittal of the officers in the Rodney King beating.
The Man in Black, Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, and Public Enemy...some of the most powerful messages in music history.
This track was in response to Rodney King in the 90s. Rage is amazing.
This song also made the number 1 Christmas song in 2009 as a response to the boy band generic and formulaic stuff being pushing by X factor and the voice sorta shows. They played live for being voted in, and asked not to use any bad language in it, but the live feed cut at the end of the performance
I recorded the live show broadcast on the BBC 😁👌 "we apologise to for the use of bad language that may offend anyone...". Glorious
Check out "Bulls on Parade" and "Testify" RATM was one of the most influential bands ever!! ❤
They speak the truth. God bless 'em for it! Also incredibly great rock!
Amazing band... check out:
Bulls on Parade
Know Your Enemy
Sleep Now in the Fire
Bullet in Your Head
People of the Sun
Down Rodeo
I always sung the song as “those that died, were justified, reppin the badge, and their cloaks of white.” Zack and Tom don’t f*ck around with the lyrics. Check out “Down Rodeo.” That’s fire.
You've unlocked a wonderful decade of musical greatness. Now try out some TOOL, 12 Foot Ninja, Heart covering anything Led Zeppelin, Bjork, Ani DiFranco...... the 80's evolving into the 90's were stellar years. Constant ear therapy. Music is my powerhouse to get through every day. Kudos, man. Keep finding great stuff.
Rage Against The Machine - Fistfull Of Steel - 1993 🔥🔥🔥
YES!!!
~ jumps around all crazily ~
Tom Morello (guitarist) did a live performance of "Ghost of Tom Joad" with Bruce Springsteen- at The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's 25th Anniversary Concert... you outta see THAT performance... Tom is EPIC!
It was so awesome to see and hear this song on television when I was a kid many years ago. They did a live television gig and "promised" to not user curse words and performed this song hahahh lmao.
morelo is a great guitar hero, influent and unique
Welcome to Gen X social injustice rage rock. We're tired and proud of Gen Z for their activism today so we can go find a cave to hermit the rest of our days in.
They don’t do it nearly as well
You are part of the SOLUTION. We tried in my generation. This is my generation. Now you young ones need to keep taking the lead. Keep getting better. We have known about and spoken up through our music for years. We pass the torch to you. ❤ No pun intended.
Yes, Zach has a very commanding voice he lends to his poetry.
Your input is very well spoken as well.
Your channel will grow a lot reacting to their songs.
I love your reaction! Really every time I hear this song I feel the same excitement as you.
Dude! I love your enthusiasm for great music, regardless of the genre! I'm looking forward to watching more of your reactions! I would recommend "Bulls on Parade" by them also.
Thank you man. YOU are killin it! Keep doing what you do, you are really good at it.
Nothing ever changes… this song is still relevant now as it was then and as it was 60 years ago.
we seen at wood stock ''99'' AMAZING!!
there self titled album is deffo in my top 3 all time, all songs are banging
I'm very tired right now, but I remember a Republican member of Congress being a huge RATM fan, and I just thought, 'dude, did you even listen and comprehend the lyrics?' No self-awareness (and this is coming from an almost 60 year old woman). I was lucky to see Tom Morello's band Street Sweeper Social Club open for Nine Inch Nails a few times. At one show, members from all bands passed out water to those of us waiting for seats because it was torturously hot that day. A really nice bunch of guys.
The switch ups are awesome. This song should be a civil rights anthem
3:11 you heard it right brother and understood it perfectly.... and now you understand their name Rage Against The Machine. Amazing reaction and i am glad it didnt flew over your head!
Rage is fire!

Killing in the name of

For wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
You justify those that died
By wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
Some of those that work forces

Motherfucker!
Uh!
And that was their Xmas Spectacular 🎄 😂
Here's the link. Link so enjoy.

2:08 Your head was bobbin' then you started noddin'.
Very clear message in this song.
Another amazing reaction dude!!!!
Rage is an amazing band, you'll have lots of fun with these guys. 3 albums full of phenomenal music and powerful messages. Never heard a bad song from them, everything requested by them will be great. For example,
DOWN RODEO
TESTIFY
TAKE THE POWER BACK
i suck for remembering song names.
Great positivity brother. Infectious attitude and smile. Love it.
My man kead off with firefighters lololok
I love when people get as pumped up about this song. It is a great protest anthem.
Much love.
I'm always surprised when people haven't heard this song. BTW, you aren't supposed to feel down, your supposed to RAGE ;)
One of my favorite bands since they came out when I was growing up in the 90’s
Fuck yeah!
🤘🧙♂️🤘
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast, Veteran of The Battle of Oakland.
When you said im not getting into that because im having a good day... i love it ❤
"Killing in the Name" appears on the 1992 self-titled debut album. It features heavy drop-D guitar riffs and lyrics protesting police brutality inspired by the beating of Rodney King and the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
You nailed your interpretation.
Love your reactions! Found you through REN reactions. REN has said he has been very influenced by RATM. Everything by them is 🔥🔥
This video has the best reactions on the internet, and you blew them out of the water! Instant subscriber❤ love it man keep it up!
My drivin' music back in the day...still is ,come to think of it! Best music to drive to when your trying to get somewhere AND when your needing to rage against injustice! Still reasonates in these times!
Listen to the entire record without stopping. It's one of my favs! Enjoy!
They were soooou amazing ❤loves this band this song was in filme of Matrix
I'm so happy you reacted to this song and I just found you, subscribed and liked the video. I look forward to more of your reactions for sure. Thank you.
Honestly, these are prevelant feelings in the US and UK alternative scene except that straight edge movement in the US. His words are pure truth and he had the passion to show it. We love him for it. Imagine how many reactions he's had since UA-cam was up! I hope he watches them!
I love that you loved this!
I got goosebumps when "Fuck you! I won't do what you tell me!!" dropped and I have heard this song 1000 times.
It both saddens and angers me that RATM are perhaps even more relevant now than when they first came out 30 years ago. Then again, speaking truth to power will always have a place in society.
"I wish the solution was that simple". Words. Must be found, somehow and soon.
Keep up the RATM reacts brother ✊
This came out the same year as Rodney King. Look at the lyrics: Killing in the name of
