  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, is a digestive disorder. It's caused when gastric acid from your stomach flows back up into your food pipe (esophagus).
    Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD.
    Rena Yadlapati, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist who specializes in esophageal diseases.
