  • San Zhan is the most important form in the Fujian Five Ancestor Styles, and our Tiger Crane Combination is no different. Our method of development is based on our first ancestor, Bodhidharma, and his Yi Jin Jing process. The San Zhan forms, of which we have five in our system, are the vehicle for this profound work.
The San Zhan ('Three Wars') forms are an incredibly in-depth set of principles that completely transform the body and mind of the practitioner from day one. However, they must be taught correctly, as there are many facets that can easily be misunderstood.
Within the first three years of daily practice, the practitioner learns to become acquainted with their body, stretching and opening the joints and tendons. The practitioner learns to abandon unnecessary movements and muscle use, and to find and develop the 'strings' or jin pathways that connect up the body. The mind slowly saturates the body and is sunk and grounded, causing a strong stable root and an internal sinking that creates more space in the body and the joints.
This space and the rubbery development of the white tissues give the famous bouncy body effect renowned for absorbing significant impacts and even redirecting an opponent’s force. At this stage, the practitioner should be able to transmit power up from the earth in a clean, unrestricted path.
By year three, the bodywork, San Zhan catching, hard Qi Gong, and unique breathing methods should have developed a strong, robust body that has transformed to a great degree. From here, we move on to working with the lower Dan Tian, which should be the main focus of the practitioner's awareness at this point. The hard Qi Gong softens, and the field of sensation in the lower abdomen, which can often feel like a pool of magma bubbling away, can be put into different body circulations and begin to consolidate inside the body. Martially, we add the wooden staff to help awaken the Dan Tian and connect it to the tip of an unyielding wooden stave. This helps develop great power and strong, robust paths to carry this power. This process can take us up to 6 to 7 years of daily practice.
The practitioner then spends the next three to four years building their energy systems and allowing this to transform their whole body. At this stage, you will see practitioners become solid and full, often referred to as 'iron wrapped in cotton.'
The San Zhan form has so much depth that all that I have described above can be found in the first of the three wars. The other two wars come later and take us deeper into the nature of Mind & Being. But that path takes one through the heart, and purification of the heart is necessary to achieve higher levels of progress.
The keywords in all of this are 'Daily Practice.

Hey from across the pond. :) Nicely presented. Don't know your form, but your explanation and presentation is admirable. Isn't this the form that san chin of karate also uses?
