  • There probably won't be a PlayStation 6 or successor to the Xbox Series X/S! This may sound shocking, but for the reasons I discuss in this video, it is very likely!

    I think it will definitely become an option for people who have good internet. I've been trying out the Xbox cloud on my Series X and it's amazing. Works amazingly well, it also makes having a Series S or keeping your Xbox One more desirable because one thing you forgot to mention you will or should be getting the best quality there is so technically your be playing Series X quality on a cheaper machine.

    Cloud Gaming won't become the primary method until internet quality WORLD WIDE is much improved. At the moment more than half the world is rocking sub-100 MBit/sec internet speeds.... which is far from adequate to stream all games with max quality to (and from, in the case of multiplayer games) all gamers at the same time.
    Worldwide average internet needs to be in the 10's of gigabytes per second before servers will be capable of handling the load needed to fully take over.... short of reducing graphical fidelity and game depth/computations...
    Right now if all the gamers in the world switched to cloud gaming, it would cause tremendous amounts of lag, visual artifacts, and inconsistencies in portrayed physics to those users.
    Until then, PC gaming will be on top. But admittedly whether it be years or decades, that is probably not going to last forever

    • @Battleneter
      @Battleneter 2 роки тому +2

      Latency is the MUCH bigger issue not just speed of the users internet connection. Not everyone is close to an Azure datacenter as an example, I doubt people in Western Australia or many parts of Asia will want to play with a 200ms latency depending on the game and the closest datacenter, and we are talking latency for single player games as well of course not just competitive first person shooters.

    • @cobalt-snake6125
      @cobalt-snake6125 2 роки тому +2

      @@Battleneter Also imagine what a pain this would be for people on monthly capped data limits. Imagine having to stop half way through your single player game because you ran out of data and now have to wait until the start of next month before you can continue your single player campaign. The entire video game industry better do a lot of in-depth research before they jump on this bandwagon. Otherwise a lot of these companies are going to find themselves losing tons of customers and a lot of money. People don't seem to realise that for some parts of the world an Internet speed of 20mbps download and 10mbps upload is still the norm. And then if you bring wifi into the mix, well that's a whole bag of problems on its own.

    • @Battleneter
      @Battleneter 2 роки тому

      @@cobalt-snake6125 For sure on data caps, sadly a real thing in many countries. Unless the likes of Microsoft or Nvidia put a datacenter in ever large city and town in most countries which is not going to happen, latency is always going to be the largest issue, even if everyone had 1gbps unlimited internet connections :P

    • @cobalt-snake6125
      @cobalt-snake6125 2 роки тому

      @@Battleneter That is true. When it comes to gaming over the Internet it's not just about download speed and upload speed, ping is also very important, and depending on how far your connection needs to go can be rather high. As a general rule for online gaming any ping higher than 50ms is going to cause lag. Higher than 100ms and your game becomes completely unplayable. You also have the input lag of your TV and controller to worry about. Controller lag + TV lag + Internet ping being too high depending on how far away the servers (or other person) is from you is a recipe for disaster. The video game industry needs a massive reality check if they think this is the future of gaming.

    I'm extremely concerned though, wouldn't game streaming go through the same issues as video streaming?
    Right now, Xbox and Playstation are different in specs, size, and catalog. People only decide between the two, but if we include other companies game studios would just be split on which service to partner with.
    Imagine wanting to play COD and Spider-Man 2, but you have to subscribe to two services.
    Or wanting to play some other games, but they're all split across multiple services.
    In my opinion, game streaming should only be optional. Some games get taken away permanently, or older versions deleted, but if we're still allowed to keep physical copies, not only can we trade them, but we can do whatever we want with them.
    Letting gaming companies take complete ownership of all my games is something I don't want.
    We've already seen people reject the idea of an "Always-On" console with the Xbox One, so I don't see people taking it lightly on cloud gaming.

      @@kirillholt2329 Exactly, and all services have to come to an end, or the service provider eventually *_will_* want to remove the hardware needed to run older games.
      Modding would go away forever, game companies would be able to take games away permanently since no-one can just keep a disk or a download of it.
      And the worst part is that maybe eventually you can get banned from an entire service, since your in-game profile is linked to your account.
      Not to mention buying games would just become having permanent access to that game without a subscription, at least until the service/developer decides to randomly remove the game.

    Sony haven't verified the PS6 but Microsoft (the market leaders in cloud gaming) have confirmed that they're already hard at work on new hardware. Which makes sense, because Xbox Cloud Gaming servers run directly off of Series X hardware data centers, so if they upgrade their data centers in the next 5-6 years I also wouldn't be surprised if they release a retail product. Cloud just isn't viable for a lot of people and won't be the norm for the next 10-15 years. It's a great idea, but in practice there's too much latency for most people. On the other hand, when network infrastructure improves more globally and data centers are built more locally, I'm sure Cloud Gaming services will take off. But, Microsoft have confirmed plans to release a smart TV app and Cloud Gaming stick (my guess is $100 for the stick, a controller, and 3 months of Game Pass Ultimate) so it will be somewhat more popular but it still isn't quite there imo.

    We are a decade away from stable cloud gaming.
    Not sure where you got your opinion on the rise of cloud gaming overtaking PC/Consul.
    Most players want full control of their gaming experience.
    Cloud gaming is subject to not owning anything you purchase; rather you’re just essentially “leasing the right to play through purchases”.
    The internet being better isn’t the bigger issue.
    The bigger issue is convincing people to lose control of what they purchase to own; as opposed to just renting your gaming experience.
    It’s not happening anytime soon.

    • @cobalt-snake6125
      @cobalt-snake6125 2 роки тому

      Precisely. Console gamers are still very sceptical and hesitant about digital game purchases. People on console still largely prefer buying their games on physical media. Convincing them to switch over to cloud gaming is not going to happen any time soon. And like I said in a previous post, one thing that instantly pisses a console gamer off is if they need an Internet connection to play single player. Remember, gaming on PC is very different than gaming on console. On PC you are at the mercy of your Internet connection no matter what you are doing. On console single player games are still a completely offline experience, even on the newest consoles today. Suddenly changing that out of the blue is for sure going to open up several cans of worms. Most likely, (for console gaming at least), cloud gaming is something that will come gradually and very slowly over time. It will be a while before we are in a situation where we see "the last consoles ever". If I'm not mistaken there were people back +/-10 years ago predicting that the PS4 and Xbox One would be the last consoles ever, and they were proven wrong.

    Due to the insurmountable latency issue where not everyone is close to a applicable datacenter, this is not going to happen at least on PC where gamers demand high FPS low latency/input lag especially for first person shooters in particular. PC's are also a "PC" where many gamers use them for productivity especially these days with Covid, so they are not "just" buying an expensive high end gaming where by streaming would save a lot of $$ . Console players tend to be a lot more tolerant of lower performance/fps and high input lag, so that's a maybe.

Sony will bring out the ps5 pro followed by the ps6. Why because they have invested too much to abandon the projects. Will there be a ps7? Who knows. I've personally never been attracted to cloud services, I dont even have a pS plus sub. I prefer to buy my games and store them on a 6tb external drive. Cloud Gaming is and will stay an option and a part of the market, however it will never push local hardware out of the industry.
    The simple fact is that latency will forever be the bane of streaming, also so will bandwidth. There is nothing to be done about it, its simply limited by physics, atleast the former.
    The servers literally have to be within a few dozen miles for latency to even have a chance to compete with local hardware, even if giving it the benefit of the doubt and saying all other elements of this technology are literally executed to their perfection. So unless you live inside a big city or in its outskirts youre out of luck, atleast if you want almost imperceivable latency differences compared to local hardware.
    Second is bandwidth, sorry but decent quality streaming in 4K for games needs *atleast* something like 1-2Gbit/s for 60fps using H.265 low latency encoding and thats still very far away from lossless, thats just not practical for atleast the next 2-3 decades.
    Until then you get "4K" 30fps streaming at like 20-50Mbit/s that has barely enough bandwidth to even be competive with a lossless 720p video source.

Sony has allowed the PlayStation to be it's ultimate moneymaker and it's main focus, they are not going to leave billions on the table so you could pay a few bucks for a cloud game. And were Sony to try and do that, another company would pick up where they left off. Consoles aren't going anywhere for generations. It doesn't make financial sense for Sony or the consumer. Look no further on fuel prices when it comes to how the framework of capitalism (profit at all costs) is driven into everything, including gaming. Do you really think that this would decrease costs? Nay, they are charging more now than ever and this is demonstrable with both physical and digital versions of games. There is nothing to suggest that cloud gaming would actually decrease in price over time especially when it comes to historical pricing. If I had to clarify even further, look at Netflix and how they increased the price for their service.
    But ultimately, it depends how hundreds of millions of customers react to cloud gaming in the future and we just don't know that if we don't look at some data first. I would refer to the huge rise in mobile gaming as an example of how gaming can be bought by groups of people that would have never thought about picking up a home console before. I, for one, know that cloud gaming would never work. It would take an entirely new generation of people to adopt that and my prediction is that this is decades away.

    totally bs.
    Even the PS7 will laugh at this.
    Cloud game service? It won't be better than any powerful console that sits right next to you. Less lag, which can give players a better single player gaming experience.
    I know what you want to say. Cloud gaming is much more powerful and can provide better graphics and everything else. It's true, but not necessary to the majority of gamers. Less lag and less system interruption by ignoring the higher complexity of the network will always be preferred. Also, the graphics are already good enough by today's standards. What more do you want? The story is more important than the graphics. After all, who needs to see the atomic details from 1000 miles away?
    The Internet won't be stable ever until the end of the universe, as long as there are any bigger uncertainties such as a catastrophic mother nature event which will render the internet useless. That's where the console has become a more reliable device, unlike the streaming device.
    Even if the future console stops getting more powerful in Flops, other new designs and technology will creep in and make it even better.
    Haven't you ever wished for a console that can integrate with your body and mind directly, and do more than just a regular video game, by making your bedtime dream "playable"? If you thought an independent and self-powered console would stop coming to humans in the future, this dream device won't happen.
    If Sony is going to continue its brand naming for the video game console, it will even go to PlayStation 1000! based on this logic.
    Hardware grows old, and technology can be renewed and evolved. New items and changes are desirable to humans.
    The future console will still exist; hybrids. It will be powered by local systems and by clouds for online interaction, and as help for more complex calculations, such as physics and other stuff.

    Sony will never stop making PlayStation consoles. There will always be a market for them. You underestimate the craziness of PS fans lol a gaming computer could cost 100 dollars and have 10 times better graphics and id still shell out a thousand dollars for a playstation. Dumb, yes, I know but when you've had the ps 1-5 and its been there since you were born, you're gonna want the 6
