The band that wasn't THE STROKES
The Voidz was a blessing in disguise for The Strokes. It allowed Julian do just try whatever he wanted without sticking to a certain "sound". It helped him progress as a song writer massively!
Agree entirely! I think all of the Strokes’ members branching off and doing side projects led to the greatness that was The New Abnormal. It’s such a focused record at only 9 tracks
Imagine if other bands could’ve been saved due to this approach
What's interesting is that I started with The Voidz's debut before even discovering the Strokes. I totally agree!
Agree 100%. I don’t think the strokes would still be together if the Voidz didn’t happen
SO TRUE. it acted like a vent for his ideas that seemed to be unfit for the strokes image and style.
“Human Sadness” is still one of the most under appreciated songs of the century. It’s redefining, honestly one of my favourites ever :)
If you like Human Sadness, check out the genre "Hypnagogic Pop", it's one of the main genres of The Voidz
@ghost mall it’s understandable, I am personally a long song lover so maybe it’s a little biased
@ghost mall try the original or demo version, it's just as good but under 3 minutes: ua-cam.com/video/GyWmZHus4ZY/v-deo.html
While I like the album version of the song, I will always be amazed with the music video live version. His singing is more lively.
@@harmonyinultraviolet that’s true, it’s great to see them there. I love the way they start playing the bass and the guitar solo section comes out as amusing as it can get. Unbelievable performance
"Did my Best" is genuinely one of the best songs Julian has ever written.
Ong it's so beautiful
Oh my god i was waiting for somebody to remember this one. It's such an amazing and beatifull song and just feel so nostalgic that HURTS.
yesss, its one of their best, I even used to cry how lyrics of this song hit me right in the memories lol
OMG, YES!!!
but tbh this is how i feel everytime i listen to all of his songs
Listening to The New Abnormal right after listening to The Voidz, the influence is MASSIVE especially in songs like "eternal summer" and "Ode to the Mets"
@ghost mall it’s my favourite from them too sometimes. Then I go back and listen to Is This It and just have a stupid smile on my face every time at some parts.
Future Pesent Past, too. Oblivius and Drag Queen are definitely cut from the same cloth as Tyranny, in a way
The Voidz are so underrated, hoping their next album comes out soon
soon: inifinite
The Voidz made me realize what a great song writer Julian really is.
thank you for commenting 4+ times
@@silverlink8805 no problem
''One Way Trigger'' and ''Selfless'' from The Strokes
''Human Sadness'' and ''The Eternal Tao'' from The Voidz
Julian uses the same chord progression on these songs (and there's more that i don't remember right now) and are basically the same song if you pay attention, he knows how to make the same chords unique enough to make them sound like different songs, that's a testament to his songwritting abilities
the guitar in dare i care reminds me a bit of One Way Trigger
The Strokes: Fun, drunken nostalgia, sometimes, emotions.
Julian Casablancas: Sobriety sucks. Relationships…ehhh…could be better
The Voidz: Audible battery acid dipped in malt vinegar, hot Coca Cola with lime juice & pop rocks.
The man is a musical genius and I’m obsessed with everything he does. 🤘🖤
😂you said it like it is
Lol!!!
The fact that Julian's jingle for that French fashion campaign never officially released is a crime (and great video as always with that ETHOS mic)
Seriously, there’s a Frankenstein’d version of that track - “I like the night” - on UA-cam but that’s about it. Even that was great.
human sadness and dare i care r both arguably the best song ever imo. julian just never misses
FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS IT !! I honestly think human sadness is the best song of all time
god
dare i care is so slept on
Virtue is one of the best albums of the last decade IMO. It’s just weird enough to make it experimental, but it’s also just fun as hell.
it's a perfect bridge between The Strokes and Tyranny
Tyranny is better tho. Virtue is alright, QYRUS is the best track of it. But also ALIEN CRIMELORD is a masterpiece and that's straight from TYRANNY. As somebody else put it, Tyranny is like the album you would play for a self aware robot awekening in a post apoclypse .
@@chibiromano5631 alien crime lord sounds a lot more like qyurryus than it does anything off of tyranny. also virtue is a better album tbh
@@rudywilliams6538 Qyurrus is straight from Tyranny tho ..like Dare I Care, Father Electricity, Nintendo Blood.
But Qyyrryus was actually a Jeff Kite song. 85% of it was made by him.. Julian just inserted the lyrics and then more effects came into it. Tyranny i think was also mainly a Jeff Kite thing too, but Human sadneses was a demo from Julian.
Their next album was heavily produced.
@@chibiromano5631 Qyurryus is not straight off of tyranny lol. it's way more dancy than anything on that album. The production on virtue lets the quality of the songs shine through, and the production gets dirty when it needs to on songs like black hole and we're where we were
so glad to see a bigger music channel talking about this absolute gem of a band, i don't think they get enough attention
Thanks for bringing more exposure to them. Favorite band of all time; i started as a strokes fan ended up as a Voidz diehard.
I appreciate music that's so sonically dense and expressive that you can NEVER stop listening to it, much like Tame Impala. I love how every time I revisit Tyranny I have a new favorite track, every single one has so much thought and nuanced sounds that songs line "Nintendo Blood" can go under your radar then you realize its INCREDIBLE. That song paints the picture of trying to hold back a mental breakdown and wanting to be positive but just melts into this spine chilling existential crisis by the end. This band is so special, Julian is so special, I'm so glad this band exists. It's crazy to think they've been around for 8 years!
The Tame Impala -> Voidz comparison is one I have not heard but imo it fits perfectly
First Impressions is 100% underrated imo, so is Phrazes for the Young, both are definitely classics that are slept on. I saw the Strokes a few nights ago, and they played a majority of songs from First Impressions and the New Abnormal, I think some of their best songs are on First Impressions and it’s flows really well, not a miss on the whole thing. It’s my favorite of their albums personally, which I know if a hot take, but I think all their albums are classics except Comedown, just a few skips that didn’t age well for me. Great video!
Completely agree - FIOE is a really great album - their first 3 albums are their best. Jules Solo Album is underated too. I think it is timeless and of course - the Voidz are dope asf!
Was it at Barclays ?
Honestly I feel like Comedown is slept on too. I understand why it might not be fun for a Strokes fan but if you take it in isolation as its own album separate from the rest of their discog it's such a beautiful and artistic album to me. The whole thing has an underlying lo-fi melancholy to it that resurfaces on songs like 80s Comedown Machine, Slow Animals, Chances, Call It Fate etc that I don't really find on other Strokes albums save for Angles (Life Is Simple in the Moonlight for example). I also really love how experimental they got with the production too, that really sets it apart imo
I completely agree! Comedown Machine is actually one of my favorite albums from The Strokes. New Abnormal and then Future Present Past EP.
FIOE is a very significant album, I have discovered the strokes in 2007 when a friend plays Juicebox on an acoustic guitar and straightaway fell in love with the strokes! As a teenager back then, I think the strokes is the coolest band because of Juicebox, Heart in the cage & Reptilia. As time goes on, I started to appreciate and keep on coming back to their older stuffs like Hard to explain & Trying your luck. I can't never move on from those two songs.
Where no Eagles Fly is actually one of my favorite songs from pretty much anything remotely related to The Strokes, the main band included. It's that intense and badass
I don't understand the hate for First Impressions, it's a killer album.
Fioe of earth is absolutely amazing
well, compared to the first two albums, its nowhere close. the vocals is just kinda mixed weird
52 mins long strokes albums is a bit boring given their linear and formulaic songs
@@3xtan327 though i don't mind lengthy albums, I wouldn't disagree that a couple songs could be taken off the album. But the bulk of the album is filled with great songs.
Who hates that album oml
Some of the best songs Julian has ever written were made for The Voidz! Quite underrated band for people who aren't previously fans of The Strokes
'Did My Best' is one of my most favourite songs and the best song by The Voidz imo
Happy to finally see this video, as I'm a strong advocate for the Voidz, particularly their debut. As much as I love the rock fusions of Virtue, it didn't immediately captivate me to the same degree that Tyranny did. The apocalyptic motiff, distorted vocals and instrumentals, the wide variety of influences. Its such a weird, fascinating piece of experimental noise that blew me away just as much on subsequent relistens as it did that first experience. The run from opener Take Me In Your Army all the way to Father Electricity is one of the most incredible runs of music on any album I've heard the last decade. That said, it isn't necessarily the most consistent record. The tracks Johan Von Bronx and Nintendo Blood don't do it for me as much as the rest. Even if I still like those tracks, they don't compare to what comes before and after them. But the highs are unrivaled for me. Crunch Punch and Where No Eagles Fly are some of the most lyrically rich songs in Julian's discography. M.utually A.ssured D.estruction is the most powerful, even raw depiction of anger and frustration I've heard in a rock song. Father Electricity and Dare I Care have some of the most off-kilter uses of Latin/Afro inspired sounds on the whole album. And of course, Human Sadness, which I honestly could never put to justice here. Julian's best song by a mile. And again, not to desparage or undercut Virtue, as its a fantastic follow-up, and showed that the band was more than just abrasive experimentalism. But I feel like its always overshadowing Tyranny when The Voidz is the topic of discussion. Sure, Tyranny is the far more sonically demanding project, but as a result its the more interesting of the two to me. Plus, it showed me that Julian was more than just the guy that started The Strokes. And as much as I love The Strokes, seeing the experimentalism here pay off is super rewarding. Easily my favorite album from Julian across all his projects, and I'd even argue one of the better albums of the 2010s.
I couldn't agree more about Tyranny! To me, Virtue wasn't quite as special because it was so drastically different from the grandiose, elaborate and thought-out nature of the Tyranny tracks/style. Virtue was just so varied and scattered back and forth (among the really great tunes here and there, like Pointlessness). Tyranny was simply the most definitive of The Voidz, in my opinion. It was especially groundbreaking to me, being the first time I had heard genuine experimental rock (already being a big JC and Strokes fan too). Although I would be curious to see another album from them, I would've preferred to see them following their experimental footsteps in Tyranny.
But I understand it's not for everybody... it's for nobody. 😉
the voidz are by far my favorite band. can’t wait to hopefully see them live one day
Tyranny and Virtue are two of my all time favorite albums. The first three songs off Virtue were so different from each other and so good, I was hooked immediately and didn't look back. I'm so glad to see you giving them the attention they deserve and I can't wait to see what they do next.
Mine too
i literally just started listening to the voidz last week wow
I listen to both bands at least once per week. Sometimes I want to listen to them so much that I stop in the middle of another track and start listening to one of many many masterpieces of theirs.
The Voidz are here to show the older generations there's still good music being created :)
I would really love it if you'd do a video on the other Strokes members' side projects. A lot of impressive songs from the other boys, too!
Honestly I love The Voidz, not like I love them as a die hard fan, but my fave tracks from Julian are from him in The Voidz: Leave It In My Dreams, Pink Ocean, QYURRYUS, Wink, Permanent High School.
Edit: the song that got me to them was QYURRYUS, I remember saying so bad, what the fuck is this cr4p?, then it's like, I mean it's weird?, then like, it's kinda ok? I guess somebody can like it I guess?, then I found myself singing that "I LOST WHATS MINE", all along my day while playing tf2, then I loved The Voidz and Virtue + The live versions of the tracks during the Night Show Tours (Jimmy Fallon, Kimmel, and all that stuff) were so good, specially Leave It In My Dreams.
Such good music, quite unique listening experiences.
Julian and The Voidz came to São Paulo in 2017.
It was a great show. The venue was rather small, perhaps less than 800 people there.
I've seen the Strokes live multiples time, but I think I've never seen Julian so relaxed on stage. He was laughing and touching the audience, looking genuinely happy.
I still can't believe I've seen one of the great personalities in the history of music in such an informal situation.
Anyway, even though I don't think a lot of their songs are great, I believe the Voidz were a nice influence for Julian. They allowed him to relax, to lose the pressure of being a great rock star full of expectations and just to what the hell he wanted.
this videos are so top quality
Totally agree. The Voidz is challenging to listen to at first because it’s so different, even with taking familiar sounds from other genres, because they created something totally new. And deeply beautiful. I found my entry point to the voidz through Virtue, as well, and could then go back to Tyrrany and got into it. Amazing music!
Love your analysis man
Tyranny is probably in my top 3 all time favourite albums, incredible record
Love your vids so much man, so educational but fun! More please!
I fucking love The Voidz
I think I'll be exploring new music throughout your uploads. I have no idea of how or why you never miss in the subjects of your videos, but every time I give a try to something you made a video about o always get an awesome experience.
Just discovered this channel and your making a video about Julian! A dream come true!
I love listening to music and always want to know more about it and hear more about the artists that I like. Middle 8 is the first and only youtube channel that I turn on the notifications for the new video releases.
The Voidz are my favorite band on the planet right now, nothing else out there excites me as much as what they are doing. Also doesn’t hurt that being in The Voidz seems to have given Julian new perspective and interest with The Strokes, FPP and New Abnormal are the coolest things they’ve ever released imo.
I love this channel cause the music you guys upload is exactly what i listen to🙏 keep up the great work!
Yess I've been waiting for this video to come out for ages
I remember the first time I heard pink ocean. I was at work and literally stopped what I was doing. Like just dropped whatever I had in my hands and I just listened to the song.
Nice video! Would love to see a video where you list your favorite albums, i like your taste
YES I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS! Amazing video, man! Keep up the great work. Human Sadness is definitely the Voidz’ magnum opus and I hope that more people can understand the beauty of it and how great this masterpiece is. And Julian’s songwriting has definitely improved over the years and I think it really does shine through with “The New Abnormal”.
Very well put
I was really glad to see that you made this video. The Voidz are my favorite band, and I'm always excited to see people talking about them. Keep up the great content. Also I like the Django Django album on your wall
I have waited a long time for this and I didn't even know that before I saw the notification!
I love Virtue! Jules is a genius, Pointlessness is an amazing track, And it's very cool to see Julian doing his adlibs and jams with The Strokes recently too, Im very excited for what's about to come next to these two bands! ❤️
Fascinating analysis. Thanks for making this. I wish I had your voice.
Leave it in my dreams is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard
You’re correct, they are The Voidz.
Your videos are awesome dude keep it up!
Thank you 🙏
I was literally hoping for you to make a The Voidz video, thank you....
Both albums they released are masterpieces. Tyranny blew my mind and drastically changed my views on music and what you can do with it. Liberating.
did my best, permanent high school, leave it in my dreams & aliennation are all great tracks
Honestly all of the Strokes' side music is really good, I've yet to get into Fab and Nikolai's music a lot but what I've heard from, especially machinegum and summer moon, is really cool. And Albert's solo stuff and CRX are amazing, Francis Trouble and New Skin are Honestly one of two of my favourite albums, they so good. I feel like The Voidz overshadows these guys too much, I'd love to see this become a series or smth on all their side projects.
Francis Trouble was some great work. I’ve tried to get into CRX, but only came back to a song or two
Definitely try Fab's work. Other than the voidz, it's my favorite of the offshoots
Machinegum is shockingly sick af
I saw the Voidz at their Brooklyn residency when Virtue was released. To this day my favorite concert I've ever been to. Idk if I could ever see The Strokes with the giant crowds they pull in... Also agree with TNA sometimes being the best Strokes album.
I'm so glad you mentioned "I Like The Night" because even though it wasn't finished, I love what's there. Another little gem from The Strokes is "Clear Skies."
But yeah, The Voidz are amazing, and both bands are among my favorites. Awesome video as always.
Listening to The Voidz is the most unique experience I’ve had in terms of how I process music. A lot of other music I can pretty quickly decide in one or two replays whether I’ll like it or not in the long run, but with The Voidz I always listen at least four or five times even if I don’t like it at first, and by the end I love it.
Incredible vid
Hey just wanted to say that im loving these new video styles and this video in particular was great, however, a certain LP on your wall caught my attention, I absolutely love Django Django’s first album. If you could do a breakdown of it or even if their full discography it would be great!
Love your vids bro keep it up 👍
i love that album
One of the best music youtuber. This channel is so underrated.
Thank you!
i love everything julian casablancas has done. i think the strokes album i like the most was the 3rd first impressions of earth though i still love the others. And phrazes for the young was a big part of my childhood. but the voidz is on another level, i cant wait for another album
I'm obsessed with their music. Julian and the rest of the band are so talented.
i love your videos! would you consider doing something on Kings of Leon at some point? their my favorite band!
Dude is spitting facts at the end, I was about to comment the same thing. What Julian is doing with The Voidz is so much more exciting than the Strokes. And that isn't a diss to the strokes at all I absolutely adore them and go to there shows whenever I get the chance
Comeback machine is one of my favorite albums, actually
I've been so much fun listening to The Voidz, I found them in the recommended songs of my favourite songs playlist on spotify and at first I didn't even realise Julian Casablancas was singing. The strokes had just become my favourite band due to comedown machine solely and thinking back I have no idea how I didn't recognize his voice. I instantly became in love with human sadness and slowly listened to the whole album. Now I most fondly remember crunch punch from tyranny. Then I started listening to virtue and at first I couldn't really get into it. Slowly I found myself repeating random numbers from the album in my head and everytime I listened back to them I instantly loved each song. At this point I don't think there is a single song from The Voidz that I actually dislike. The Voidz and The Strokes have become a gigantic part of my life now and I am incredibly excited to say that there is a good chance I'll be seeing the latter at best kept secret in a month. Don't really know where I'm going with this, just very happy you made this video. Thanks Middle 8!
Human sadness is a masterpiece
Yeah, The Voidz. My favorite band atm. I was hooked the second I heard QYURRYUS for the first time. Still one of my favorites together with Human Sadness and Dare I Care. Hope they drop Voidz 3 soon but I guess this won’t happen any time soon as Julian is touring with The Strokes over the summer.
I need a voidz tour with one set being music and the other set Julian talking about life and philosophy
You should definitely do a video on the band strfker. Really interesting group.
So the Voidz are my favourite artist, Virtue my favourite album and a strong contender for my 2nd favourite artist and album. Yves Tumour who you have also got in the background. You’ve got a new subscriber man
'Leave It In My Dreams' is one of my fav songs of all time. Love it
Truly a perfect song
Virtue is an incredible album...its so forward thinking yet pop accessible. It is an actual work of art.
I couldn't stop looking at Vincent Vega and Jules Winfield in the background but I listened to the Voidz and I really enjoyed their music. I love Qyurrus
I know everything about everything about the strokes and the voidz but I still love watching stuff like this
The Strokes were my favorite band until I heard the Voidz
i LOVE your videos and would love to see a video on whitey hes a criminally underrated musician and he makes great music. anyway keep up the good work
Accurate! thanks
Coal as a ghoul is like heroine in the form of sound
Their improv jams is also worth to see
Love the Voidz, and Julian’s solo record is also really quality
Just saw them wednesday and they added a bunch of cool voidz styling adlibs!!!
This was great to watch! Thanks for doing this analysis on the two groups. I also choose chaos and now prefer the voidz to the strokes, even though I started listening to them as a sophomore back in 2001.
I think I need to try the new abnormal for the third time because I hear a lot of people say it’s one of the Strokes best, but last time I check First impressions of earth murders it.
God I love Julian
I love The Voidz so much
im glad Julian had another project to be able to experiment! the voidz are great , imo they could never compare to the strokes, nobody can for me, but i think he got to do some different types of stuff he wanted!
I love both the voidz and the strokes 🌞
I was worried for The Strokes when I heard Virtue was such a kick ass album… and then The new abnormal came up and I went phewwwwww
I’m so happy a larger channel is talking about the voidz. They’re so underrated, it’s a breath of fresh air.

I still have more strokes and voidz than anything in my playlist. I don't know many people who know Julian. I wear merch
liked already 'cus i know this won't disappoint
please make a video about interpol discography
HELL YES, I love The Voidz and everything that Julian Casablancas does so much
Also something I find very interesting, on Julians solo album Phrases For The Young, he intentionally held himself back in fear of the album being something that people listened to once, and likely wouldn't take it seriously, so he instead sought to bridge the gap between the traditional and the overly weird music. Later he stated he wished he'd gone further with its weirdness, and (of course) a few years later was able to go more all out with The Voidz, which fell for what he was originally afraid of, with it just not being taken very seriously at all, even compared to his solo album.
I very regularly listen to a playlist of every fully released song Julian Casablancas has worked on (that i can also find on spotify) and with 132 songs, I have no idea how he does it but every single one is just such a banger
The cover art for their album virtue (thumbnail) is an original painting by felipe pantone (in case anyone was interested idk). great artist
5:55 AMEN TO THAT, MY BROTHER IN CHRIST !!
Leve it in my dreams is probably one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard in my life.
pyramid of bones is what got me into the voidz. the rest of their discography did not disappoint
I love the strokes, but I’d murder for the voidz
Ali and Frank are my favourite productivity UA-camrs! Hell yeah
