julian's so awkward & upfront sometimes that i feel like it comes off as rude, but i don't think he means it that way
Passive aggressive a bit maybe. You can't always tell people what you really really wanna say because people get offended and you try to be nice but somewhere deep down the aggression is still there hiding.. and gets out from time to time in subtle ways or not so subtle.. like out of the blue...😈. Truth and honesty are often served with ice so people avoid them. No one really want the cruel truth they want to hear what they want to hear. Anyway we like weird people don't we?
After one of his shows in 2014, me and a ton of other people waited to meet him. He was just so full of life and kind. It almost seemed like he thrives when interacting with his fans. He was just so amazingly nice and up beat. His manager was trying to cut things short with him meeting all his fans, and Julian just wanted it to keep going.

thank you Julian for normalising the fact that one doesn't need to portray themselves as artificially upbeat, energetic if they don't feel like it. A bit against fake high energy positivity and bro culture.
It's for sure anxiety. I know the feeling he has during the interview. Like every family get together I have.
@@kyleharry6758 For myself, anxiety makes me feel like I have to BE more; to act more upbeat than I naturally am or comfortable with, which makes me more anxious--a vicious circle. Seeing Julian be this way is actually helpful in learning to accept myself. There's a predominant vibe in the modern world that extroverted is better. This causes more anxiety to those who are naturally quiet and introverted--it makes us feel not enough.

a few second later mumbles "well, I've actually written most of The Strokes stuff." lol which is true. The guy wrote the first album and all the freakin' guitar parts, bass, drums, lyrics, etc. I don't call too many people geniuses but this guy is a songwriting genius. IMO
P I didn’t think he played guitar? I might be wrong I’m just interested to know
Second thoughts he plays guitar, yeah. he isn’t like Albert or Nick, but he plays.
@@secondthoughts0 He plays, he just didn't want to. Probably like Gerard Way where early on had trouble strumming and singing at the same time, so opted to do what he valued more with his time in singing.
@@secondthoughts0 Yes him and Albert took lessons together when they lived in the "dumbbell" apartment together. He was originally supposed to play guitar in The Strokes but chose not to and they brought in Albert.
From my understanding, Casablancas was so sick of writing everything that he forced the band to go into the studio without him to write music for "Angles". They hated it, he hated it, and it was a miserable experience for all, but I'll be damned if it isn't my second favorite Strokes album.
Huge props to the interviewer for being articulate, witty, and most importantly just a really genuine and decent human being.

I’d be so intimidated to talk to him. Julian reminds me of that lyric in the Growlers song casual acquaintances “People love to talk until they’re finally sure I’m somewhat interested. I spend my time wondering how they can’t tell I’m not listening” this is so him in this interview l. Still interesting though

The strokes are a force of talent. From the lyrics, the awesome solos/breakdowns different instruments have to the way he’s progressed his singing. I can definitely see why you said this. This is the first interview of Juilan I see and from what it seems I’m glad he’s not a dick or full of himself. You can tell he likes the topics that are being talked about.
About the growlers, great band. They seem heavily influenced by the strokes but not trying to be them. They’re definitely more surf, ska,.......has like a beach vibe. Nothing wrong with it, that’s where they’re from.

13:30 so absolutely fucking true. More people need to realize this; artists mostly. We all need to boycott the Grammys. Like Julian said in Permanent High School: "Just because something's popular don't mean it's good."
boycott? Just don't watch them, don't pay attention to them, don't care about them, don't buy the music they promote... Respect the others who do listen to that and enjoy the performances.
@@blairlane5493 You literally just described boycotting. Please go troll somewhere else.
@@Arian259 what? I did not try to troll you... I just shared what I thought. Well, appologies if you took the other way.
Artist have to pay to enter to be nominated, the labels cover that cost but I think artist shouldn't feel forced to enter
I think people would benefit from abandoning this idea that their use of a thing is the only valid use. Music is something that people use differently, and if it's good to them, it's good. If it's good to a lot of people, it's popular. That's it. Yes there are deeper levels of enjoyment to be had but that doesn't mean the surface doesn't matter.
If you don't wanna watch the grammys, don't. Nobody "needs" to uphold your preferences or standards.

I think that the Julian's perspective about music and how it is like an intermedium thing between the physical real world and a trascendal world is very accurate. I have felt sometimes, just listening to music, something spiritual like a conection and I am not talking about religious songs or something like that, it can be rock, jazz, reggae, the musical genre doesn't really matters, but music sometimes make me feel that life is just a moment which will finish in the same place for everybody, like returning to a place were we all belong, is such a complex thing, a little weird maybe😂 I don't know if anybody has feel that too, is such a soul thing. 😆
I hope I have expressed proper, English is not my mother tongue.
I resonated with his thoughts on music, too! I never imagined it in the way that he said it, but it made perfect sense to me after hearing it! I really think it is related to the soul, as you said.
I think virtually everyone experiences this.. music is so much deeper and important for humanity than it is commonly given today.

All he wanted was for people to hear his music and feel the art within it and kind of bond with those moments that to them is their entire musical livelihood. It's so much more personal and then you get people just making comments on his looks and he's so hot and comparing them to other bands.
