At about 12-13 years of age, I was kinda bullied for how obsessed I was with The Strokes. I broke off into other experimental realms of music and Julian was waiting for me there at the end of the road about 10 years later. Feels fucking great.
Thanks, man. Idk, some dumb privileged kids who didn't know how to deal with their own insecurities so they just exploit others' to seem secure in themselves I guess, lol. I still loved The Strokes just as much. Never deterred me.

I haven’t been able to stop listening to this. 13 year old me was so sure that I would love Julian Casablancas forever. 12 years later and so far I was right 😎
I was kinda bullied over how obsessed I was over The Strokes. I broke off into other experimental realms of music and Julian was waiting for me there at the end of the road about 10 years later. Feels fucking great.
SaltyUrs I don’t know what they did to the mixing of wink, but it’s all sorts of fucked up in the studio version. There was a live version released a long time ago that sounds x10 better.
I think the start of the song is kinda stupid. With that strange drum beat ... but I fuckin LOVE the rest of it. (I know the refrain has the same effect on the drums but it kinda fits there)
those lyrics make me wanna do risky shit which is strange for me coz i usually listen to punk/rock to get me pumped to do stupid stuff. also fun fact my grandad died from a crocodile. lyrics are relateable to me at least.
That description of AlienNation is THE MOST DESCRIPTIVE I've heard you say in a long time (granted, I haven't seen most of your reviews in the last two months): "It feels like I'm listening to very sad, sanitized futuristic elevator music. Like I'm riding up the elevator, at my desk job, in the year 2048. And I know that, once I reach the top floor, I'm going to get fired." Like, what! There's a story there
To be honest in the album is kinda unhearable, but live, man that's one of the best tracks. Specially that live version at a Portugal/Brazil night show
Yeah they totally grabbed words he said and made them headlines out of context. I wouldn't even trust the actual interview to be honest. He explained everything justly and it made sense. People trippin over nothing
but it wasnt even that controvesial if you read the whole thing, he even said "sorry im not good at explaining stuff" they just wanted the headline "JULIAN CASABLANCAS SAYS JIMI HENDRIX DIDNT HAVE HITS" which is why he was trending on twitter and people were roasting him, poor guy
The funny thing is they added an addendum to that specific line in the interview basically proving him right by stating that Hendrix songs were normally in the 20’s on the charts. It shows if you hover over the line. That was my point though, he wasnt controversial, that interviewer was just very unaware of reality.
I really enjoy this album. Interestingly my low point is probably Black Hole, as I feel the production doesn't really let the song explode like it could. Pink Ocean also drags a bit, and I am only disappointed in Wink's sudden ending. However, there are so many incredible songs on this. QYURRYUS, Leave It In My Dreams, Permanent High School, Pyramid of Bones, Pointlessness, and All Wordz Are Made Up are the best of the best here. Light 9/10
I also really enjoyed the album, but personally, it kinda bothers me how it seems like they really front-loaded it with all the best tracks so that it seems to really hit that lull around the middle for me.
Definitely agree with most of this review. I actually really like Wink and Pink Ocean though. The only two songs that fell short for me were My Friend the Walls and Black Hole as I feel the experimentation on those is a bit forced and unnecessary. I’ve warmed up to Black Hole but i still can’t stand those verses in My Friend the Walls. Solid 8 to light 9 for me.
This album was the craziest thing I've listened to in a long time!!!! Came here looking for something new to listen to and for the first time in years just closed my eyes and listened to the whole album front to back. Thank you soooooo muuuuuuchhhh!!!!!!
Jason Bezuidenhout Love that you are so open minded enough to listen to the whole album😃. Perhpas you might like Tyranny, The Voidz firwst album. Take it slow-m one song at a time. Maybe watch the Human Sadness video? I think you might enjoy the entire Voidzian Experience😎👽
I actually really liked 'Wink' it was fun and upbeat in a weirdly sad way and the live performance just goes to show how much Julian and the boys are loving making and playing music.
I can’t stop listening to this fucking album. I love that he makes a lot of the “virtues” very emphasized and that he references back to other songs and repeats things. I love that he mentions being a man from the 11th dimension. The way it’s put together reminds me of Phrazes. Idk man, I just love Jules and the Voidz and I’m always happy to hear your outlook! We’re Where We Were is one of my favorites. Pointlessness kills me but in the best fucking way. 💖
Although I do love Pink Ocean, I love your interest in the weirdness. It’s my fave thing about the Voidz-the not knowing what to expect next. Every song by them is it’s own little experience. Thank you Anthony for investing time in something that is near and dear to my heart. Subscribing today to your channel.👌🏻
I am stunned that as a Radiohead fan you didn’t notice how much of “My Friend the Walls” was lifted from “Paranoid Android.” I also expected Julian to start singing “Please can you stop the noise, I’m trying to get some rest...”
Checking this album out now, and it's so interesting, colorful, and one-of-a-kind. I love it! Thanks for continuing to turn me on to good music, Anthony!
What is it with Strokes members getting my favorite artists to make their album art? First Nick Valensi with Boneface for CRX and now Julian and Felipe Pantone for this!
Wink is actually one of my favorite songs of the record, I get what you mean when you say "you've heard all it has to offer by the halfway point". it is tedious like you said, but I still think its such a fun track to listen to. the Instrumental in particular is what really keeps me coming back to it, I love the heavily distorted guitar paired with the drums that kick the track off.
How is it not album of the year???? I mean it's saving rock and roll all together by killing it first and reviving as this new hybrid genre thats working so much
I am really liking this album as well ! Digging it way more than the last album. I feel like this has some of the best hooks on any of Julians albums since early strokes stuff.
I gave this album a shot. Not really up my alley, but I'm open to new shit. It was an interesting listen. Definitely all over the place. But it put me on to the track AlieNNation, which I'm mildly obsessed with. So thanks for that. You made them $1.29.
great review, thanks for making me discover this band bought it last night really loving it, did you happen to listen to the new Panopticon double album, being thinking if i sould buy it or not, keep up the good work you rule
Its a groundbreaking excellent record. I mean its really excellent. Will have to finish my Casablancas shirine this week-end. He fully deserved it by now.
Jacob Ballance yeah. Anthony just was comparing this to greatness from last time and for Jack White he wasnt all that interested in a lot of the more recent stuff he had come out with so he was realtively more impressed by BHR
Yaayyyyyy anthony!!! This was great! although I don't think Wink is boring at all. Maybe it is a little repetitive but it's so freaking catchy. lol Everyone should listen to this. I don't know if I am being quick to jugde, but so far I think Virtue is the best thing that Julian was ever involved (yes I am considering all the albuns from the strokes which I'm a fan too)
Go see them live and your opinion on wink will change! I’ve seen it 3 times now and it’s always a highlight of the show. I didn’t like the mixing at first but it’s grown on me a lot. Great review!
I just discovered WINK and I'm loving it so I had to check out the review. And shit if wink is the worst song this album is gonna be epic. OH FUCK YEAH!
I'd give it 9/10 but I'm biased and have been listening to this album since it came out so the songs have grown more on me. I still love the unique sounds of My Friends In The Wall and Pink Ocean but I agree they're not perfect and probably the low point of the album. But this album still flies by in an hour for me and most albums from this genre cant do that for me.
I think the only reason they changed the name is because it was supposed to be "The Voidz" in the first place, Casablancas put his name on the first album to make the band more popular... it was a sort of clickbait thing i guess

Virtue>tyranny as a whole.
But human sadness beats every song on this album.
Kairu-kun true. Kinda like room on fire. Same thing, part 2 but better
Kairu-kun i was waiting to a Human Sadness in virtue, the closer was the final track... but human sadness is fucking amazing
Human Sadness was my favorite song of 2014, and it wasn't even that close.
Human Sadness still floors me, even after i've listened to it 50+ times
I think Tyranny > Virtue
"Pink Ocean" was one of my favorites from this album. Loved hearing Julian get a little Tame Impala-y, it was quite a lot of fun.
