The fact that Porsche made a modern, safe car that barely weighs 3000lbs is an achievement in and of itself.
*looks at Miata*
@@papa_pt it's not really a fair comparison. Miatas don't have flat 6s
@@RyanRoadReaper even if you throw an LS in lol. I'm just been posting this since being shocked to read how little the modern miata weighs. Like 300lbs less than I would've guessed which means they know something other manufacturers don't
Yeah everyone blamed safety and regulations for reasons why sports cars supposedly HAD to get bigger and heavier. Then Mazda proved everyone wrong. But weight and driving dynamics don’t sell cars, big numbers do.
Still heavy as fuck, lotus are the last ones making a properly light car, and mazda
The 911R is a hero car for those of us who felt like Porsche was losing touch with what their customers really wanted. I loved it in 2016 and I still love it now. Great job, Tedward!
I cant remember another car that felt as big of a deal as this when it came out.
Maybe the new gt3 rs ?
nah new RS got some attention but this was MAJOR. I cannot remember another car that was this important and sought after in recent years
The car that opened the gates for the touring(s)
Only thing I can think of is when the 918, P1, and Laferrari came out
@@AV-sf5xq Modern RS products sans the 997.2 4.0 are relatively common in the sports car arena. The R was very special, not only due to limited numbers, but as stated in the video, by having a manual transmission tied to this engine (as well as the heritage touches harking back to the 1970s with the 2.7 Carrera RS).
tedward and a porsche will always be the best combo
The 911R is at/near the top of my list of unattainable dream cars. That black and white interior is so beautiful too! The green backlit gauges are a nice touch. The sound of that engine would never get old. I’m so glad you got to feature such an amazing vehicle on your channel.
Could not have said it better also one of my dreams cars
People say dream car all the time but this is actually the one for me. I don't see how a car could be better. I would just like it in Irish Green. Great video thanks
I feel the exact same way. And the darkest as possible brown leather.
As a convertible guy I have to say that I'd have a 991.2 Speedster over this, but this is damn-near perfect
Honestly, Porsche is the last Germany car maker I respect. Why? Because they cared enough about enthusiasts to not chase the dumb number game and focus on making a car simply fun.
M2 has entered the chat
Yes all the while still making cars the light spec sheets up!
Great company 😊
@@tshiamoseokane2112 The new M2 is a 1.8 ton abomination.
@@tshiamoseokane2112 yes the previous gen not this new gen monstrosity
Too bad they don’t sell affordable enthusiast cars lol, a bunch of people fanboy for them as if they’ll even drive a 911 in their lifetime
I will be 100% completely honest with you. I never even knew that there was 911R. Never seen one, never heard of one. Great story and explanation, thank you for that!
I remember when Jason did an ignition episode on this car. Probably watched it 5x within a few days😂. Absolutely awesome car! Nice to know that this car showed the auto industry that there’s still interest in a manual sports car.
me too, the reason why i fell in love with the car. Shout out to motor trend back in those days, head 2 head and ignition!
Glad you finally got to film one of these. A landmark car that changed the Porsche landscape and, I think, the enthusiast car market as a whole.
I genuinely think that if the 911 R never happened, we would never have seen a manual Supra, or a CT5 V Blackwing manual, or even Gordon Murray’s cars. It was that big of a deal. It told all manufacturers we still cared about manuals and would put our money where our mouth is.
Lol, I don't think that's entirely true. All of those cars you named are one of two things, sitting on a shared platform, or bespoke to the point where 300 models of the car won't effect much in terms of market outlook. that being said, its very possible this car was responsible for the uptick for sure.
Nah, if there's a manual Supra it's because Nissan announced that the last Z would be offered in manual transmission and Toyota didn't want to lose customers to Nissan.
The early CTS V generations with the LS6, LS2, and LSA already had manual options and the ATS V had a manual option as of 2016 and onwards too, I don’t think the 911R is what finally inspired Cadillac to make that option available for the CT5 V Blackwing
flat 6 high revving porsches and manuals are a sublime combo!
That lack of sound deadening is AMAZING! I can listen to the engine soo clearly! That + the lightness + a manual + that MA1.75 engine is what makes this my favorite 911 ever. And my favorite Porsche ever. And one of the very best sports cars I have ever seen, the 911 R is so great I usually swear by it ❤️😩
An interesting fact, redline was limited because of transmission. They were not able to develop one at the time 9k. This was said on TST podcast with the head of GT department.
Came here to write this. Something with the transmission simply not being up to the task.
Loved the deep, raspy tone of that engine. Gorgeous and very unique to most other recent GT cars! A great reminder of why this is still such a special car. Thanks for the video!
RS engines were redline limited because Porsche thought the finger follower issue that plagued the normal 991.1 GT3 was due to excessive wear 'n tear at higher RPM, so they limited the GT3RS and the R. This wasn't exactly true but it is the reason why they limited it, not because of powerband/torque reasons. They redesigned certain internals which is why the 991.2 revs to 9k and commands a significant premium over the 991.1, not just because of the 6MT vs. PDK.
It has a lower rev limit because of the increased crankshaft stroke. The .1 RS has a solid lifter valvetrain which is different than the 3.8
@@garage3022 .1 RS had engine issues as well though with many requiring engine replacements just like the .1 GT3. Wasn't properly fixed until .2 GT3
This feels like an old 911 stuck In a new 911 body, I literally thought of your Porsche right before you said It, the sounds It makes just give off that vibe. Best modern Porsche, single mass all the way!
FINALLY A POV OF THIS. I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR AGES FOR A 911 R, THANK YOU
Thank you for sharing this. There is very little 911R content out there, so every video is a treat!
Tedster, your channel is growing by leaps and bounds. So glad to see that. DOnt change dude. We love ya!
The roads u were on looked rough but the views were amazing, especially out of the 911 R. Awesome video man.
What an amazing car. Also, nobody else can present this car like Tedward. Just a natural - knows exactly what and when to say things without a script is quite amazing.
Such an amazing car, thank you for making this vid!
It's wild, that at the time when the R launched and those prices were through the roof, a CGT could be had for the same or less than a 911 R.
Excellent point!
Would anyone really take a 911 R over a CGT?
Great video and great driver. I knew little about Porsche until today.
Woke up to a tedward upload, what a great way to start a day.
Glad to see you got to make a video on Serio's car. I heard on TST that he was selling that R because he found SC to be more sensible for his use. 👌🏾 fan from the Philippines here. Keep videos coming! Especially the classic/vintage features.
This thing is insane!!! Thanks for sharing!
Big like for You and Your manual choice for review. It was a joy to watch. Greetings from sunny Croatia
The real beauty of the 911 is your girl can drive it and never know what a beast it is lurking underneath....a daily driver /Race car. .One of my bucket list cars...
I absolutely love the sound of Porsche’s and the brand. One of my all time favorites is the 2011 911 GT3 RS 4.0. And let’s not forget the absolute mental of a car the Carrera GT.
This car reminds me of the 911s that I grew up seeing as a kid. Light, nimble, could go all day, with a manual.
Me? Weakened left side so I have no clutch foot. The paddle shifter because it's what I can use. But if you want a manual, you should be able to have it.
This car represents my ethos of car enthusiasm: not going for outright performance but rather the enjoyment and viscerality of a manual transmission.
one of the greatest Porsches ever made, excited for u to hopefully drive the 911 ST!
Dream Porsche for me! Amazing video
Tedward, you’ve driven my absolute dream car. Well done!!!
Loved the green gauges and houndstooth seats in my old Porsche. Nice throwback.
The saddest thing is that since these are limited production, most of these get stuffed in a garage and never get driven.
Saw one of these years ago before I knew the extent of Porsche’s history. Seeing it in action here brings that to life!
Love that interior, such a great car!
This car is my absolute dream car. No other car but this!
The only youtuber I've genuinely been excited about for years :)
Thanks 🙏
As a Porsche Addict, man this video was one I was waiting to see, seen these go up to even the million dollar mark around here in IL, but no one beats on these like they should due to these being more of a collectable
Omg another banger! Fell in love with this car when it was featured in TopGear.
The quality of your b roll in this video is incredible! Gotta love filming on cloudy days 🔥🔥🔥
Clouds are the best possible scenario. So much direct sun most days. It’s brutal
Awesome vid man!! 🔥
I have such a soft spot for this car, it is just lovely!
Incredible car
There's just something so satisfying about Ted ward talking about a Porsche while birds chirp in the background.
IMO this is the greatest modern 911 ever created, this a dream car and a work of automotive engineering/design.
I could listen to that soundtrack all day. Need more of that in the car world
Sounds superb in the introduction. You're a lucky chap to have been able to have driven one.
This was always a bucket list car. Excited that it finally came together
the wheels are STUNNING!
I miss mass so much I had to move away from it a year ago im hoping to return in the future I’ve enjoyed your vids even more since my move
The manual just feels special...
very nice job you have sir
Love it absolutely love it
Much love from Pittsburgh! ❤
Porsche at it's best
Epic, probably my favorite water cooled 911. It’s 997 cousins the GT3 RS 4.0 and GT2 RS being right up there.
I fiddled with the 911R shifter in the Porsche museum, what an amazing shift
I own a 996, I couldn’t afford to buy one of these but boy do they look perfect in their simplicity.
Love this car so much
I love the seats!!!!
This is the creme de la creme - only the 959 surpasses this for my personal unobtanium ranking...I can only hope you appreciated driving this as much as I would have.
I love driving my 911R !
On assetto corsa
I vividly remember when the 911R came out, reading about it in a car magazine at the beach, and thinking that this was THE perfect Porsche, and if I ever won the lottery, this would be the one to get...
beautiful.
wow that sound
Audio snob comment here, you might wanna give the 8-16Khz range a boost. Makes your voice so much clearer. But my god what a car 😍
Lovely car. I totally agree with the rear wheel steering with the 991 (ones equipped with one.)
I miss those East Cost back roads with real rivers, streams, and forests...minus the occasional deer.
I felt the 911R buyers at the time got swindled thinking this was the last 911 to come in a manual but man...this thing is special.
The ones who bought new at msrp got a sweet deal. 184k base price i think
A wonderful thing!
Very beautiful car! I have a 2018 991.2 GT3 Touring with manual gear❤❤❤❤
I like how sleek it is compared to the GT cars. Love an "unassuming" car
Sensational.
I remember watching Jason Camissa saying Porsche are surprise that these 911R sold out before it even hit the production letting them know manual transmission isn’t going out (at least) anytime soon
Great car. Shocking road surfaces.
This is straight crazy. I wanna get a 992 gts. I’ll be good with that
Sucks for people who paid top dollar for a 911R just for Porsche to come out with the 911 GT3 Touring a year in change later.
Those are the few. I'm glad Porsche screwed over all the 911 R speculators 😂 few things irk me more than someone sitting on a limited edition car just to sell it
Waltham Massachusetts?!! That's where I am! That's sick!
For side mirrors, I watch people saying to adjust them so they point outward.
But then how would you see the cars behind you on the lanes next to yours?
I get that you can use the rear view mirror, but oftentimes, the car in the rear blocks you view of the cars on approaching on the lanes on both sides.
Definitely a Porsche I would love 2 own this one’s a gentleman’s fast bus
Ferrari missing out on all that cash by not making a manual transmission in their modern cars.
Ferrari hates fun
somehow I don't think ferrari of all companies is missing any cash
Same with Lambo
Does it have the sport design package because I thought the front locked more special?
Today is the day!
I want to see you driving your own cars more often.
Is this Steve Serio's personal car? Definitely a bucket list drive for me!
Man the green/red stripes are really part of this car but are missing here... :( Still, love this car since it was launched!
Kinda love it without stripes. Those were just stickers anyway
My holy grail
Around 9:27 @tedward didn’t lift and showed he clearly knows what he’s doing with 911’s
I've got a 2016 981 with a six-speed manual and I absolutely love it. How many people actually track their cars? Percentage wise, the number of 911 owners that track their cars is what? It's not a sports car if it's a manual
A timely video, since the pdk-only spyder rs just announced. Even more than the 4RS or gt3, it’s ethos is the MT. Will there be a second round of the spyder rs (or another gt3-engined spyder variant) with a MT? Everyone says “no,” but of all their cars, it screams for it the loudest.
That doesn't sound like any other modern 911. It sounds more like an air cooled 911 than the synthetic scream of the typical modern 911.

*991.1 GT3 with a 991.1 GT3 RS engine, a 6 spd manual, and some different body panel materials. Body not based on an RS. Didn't know about the flywheel options, neat!
2:52 look at that smile
Stunning car, absolutely love it. However, this 911 is the poster child for how incredibly silly the 911 crowds are.
The value of this car is not justified despite the "low production" numbers. You can get the manual GT3 experience in an actual GT3 priced a couple hundred grand below the market value of these 911 R's.
Amazing car, asinine market 😅
I want to hear your opinion do you think prosche cars are beautiful
this car is so rare that people don't drive it....
they limited the RPM's on these because Porsche assumed the finger follower issue was an issue due to high RPM so they limited these below 8500. They redesigned the engine for the 991.2 GT3 so that it could rev out to 9k
This gen looks so much better than the new one
