    John Mellencamp just captures the American zeitgeist so well. Try "Check it out" or "Rain on the Scarecrow" or "Small Town" if you haven't heard those. It's Americana at it's finest.

    John Mellencamp has a huge catalog. He's been making music since the 80's, singing about America, though he does have more political songs, like "The Authority Song" and "Scarecrow." He has been organizing the benefit Farm Aid since 1986, to support American Farmers. A lot of good tunes in his backlog.

    John Cougar Mellencamp is an American cultural treasure. He captured the dichotomy of a land of abundance and freedom vs how unevenly those gifts are distributed and those who fall through the cracks like no other artist did imo. For something a bit more recent, try Grandview, a song he did with Martina McBride on his 2017 album Sad Clowns & Hillbillies. It's more country than rock and a fun song.

      @@neilcarter5466 You're correct about the no filler. I heard an interview with Melloncamp shortly after the release of the album. In the interview he was talking about how they cut the whole thing in one day for the producer. They got in a groove, and just jammed from one song to the next. When they were standing around discussing how to make it ready for release, the producer said, there's nothing else left to do, let's release just the way you guys sang it, and played it, no mixing, no nothing.
      That's why Melloncamp always sounded so good live on his Scarecrow tour. Actually he sounded good on all his concerts. At least the two I attended.

    In this episode of Brad & Lex, acoustic guitar strumming supplies an instant smile upon Lex before identifying Brad as the protagonist in Mr Cougar's 1983 top ten billboard hit. Brad returns the characterization condescendingly but to no avail as Lex accepts the part with celebratory shouts and "roof raises" untill muscle and skin tissue are added to the song's body which creates smiles and childlike playfulness as the beat summons Lex's physical form to perform a plethora of "bops" such as "piano flat hands", the "shoulder shimmy" and "benchwarmer bobble". Brad interrupts and enthusiasticly salutes the "American" sound before returning to his "sway" while Lex gives the band an emphatic cheer of "OK!", some "soul face", "fan hands", "overhead claps", "cart pushes" and a one woman applause before canceling out Brad's pink house story with the big picture of it all.

    Rain on the scarecrow. Official video interviews farmers and shows why the song was made for too. Hats off to farmers and ranchers. We couldn't make it raising sheep for profit on a small farm because the overhead was so high.

    The imagery in the official video for this song is pretty cool. Without this song saying anything overtly political, I personally consider it to be a patriotic classic.

    • @kjmorley
      @kjmorley 2 роки тому +8

      His songs are sometimes misinterpreted as patriotic anthems, when a deeper listen reveals lyrics that deal with the challenges of living in America as well as the triumphs. Mellencamp has expressed his love for his country, but has also criticized the US government for going to war in Iraq, developing a dependency on foreign oil, and not doing more to support the working class.
      "It's really an anti-American song," Mellencamp told Rolling Stone about "Pink Houses." "The American dream had pretty much proven itself as not working anymore. It was another way for me to sneak something in."
      Springsteen has a few like this as well. “Born in the U.S.A." is often misinterpreted as a patriotic song.

    • @jennifertierney9076
      @jennifertierney9076 2 роки тому +5

      Mellencamp stated this was not written as patriotic, but as a statement on how the American dream was never realized by many Americans. Reagan, in all his wisdom, tried using Pink Houses for his reelection stops (unauthorized use of the song to boot). He didn't get that Mellencamp was criticizing life in America for the many.

    Like Cheryl Crow said "It's not about having what you want, it's about wanting what you have". I wonder what the "pills that kill" lyric means. This song was released in 1983. The morning after pill was first available in 1999.

      "It's really an anti-American song," Mellencamp told Rolling Stone about "Pink Houses." "The American dream had pretty much proven itself as not working anymore. He's from my home state of Indiana and he pretty much portrays another song called "Small Town". Check it out if you get a chance. Despite his success over the years he's absolutely REFUSED to leave the area he grew up around and still lives there to this day. In fact, he has married the likes of supermodel Elaine Irwin and dated Meg Ryan for a while, and had them move to his house in Indiana rather than move to LA. I believe he does own properties elsewhere as many successful people do, but his mainstay is still beautiful Bloomington, Indiana.

    I missed this been traveling for work I know y'all are in Florida. But I'm here in Indiana. 20 min from where john grew up he lives in Bloomington now by lake monroe Indiana largest lake. I've seem John mellencamp 6 times his first arena show here in Indiana was market square arena he opened up for heart. They let him play extra long because he was a home town boy. Pretty dope they acknowledge him at the end of there . Show first time he headlined at market square arena. We camp out there for 2 days we were 14 15 &16 in line they stamped are hand an you had to be there every couple hours when they called your number or you lost your place in line. They told us we had to leave. For a while because the Indiana Pacers had a game. An they didn't want everyone out front during the game. So we bought tickets to the game an it was so empty in there I could have set on the beach. It was before reggie Miller. Came in an the pacers got really good. But just so stupid trivia for you guys love ya both. Stay safe 😎✌

    Edit: Jack and Diane was running through my head, and I remembered there being a Tastee-Freez in my hometown (where they were suckin' down a chili dog). I looked up on Wikipedia, and I NEVER knew it originated in my hometown! (Joliet, Il). I knew Dairy Queen was founded there, but I never knew about Tastee-Freez. Anyway...
    I was born in the early 70's in a little pink house in the midwest (like Mellencamp, but he was born in the early 50's). Pink houses definitely had a popular phase back in the 50's, 60's (and was phasing out when I was born). I was positive you'd love this song, and "Small Town" will be the next that will make you feel just like you do with "Pink Houses" and "Jack and Diane". I'm so happy Lex mentioned her love of the break down part of the song where sang about the "Gulf of Mexico"! Mellencamp does that kinda thing so well.

    It's a good tune about how we're so fooled into thinking we have it better here, that we are better. He captures the disappointment that is America, especially as those few "good" decades between WW2 and when Reagan broke the Unions and aspirations that you'd do better than your parents ended. I'm on the cusp of being a Boomer and a Gen X'er and this came out when I was in college and things just shifted in this country... let's just say that my political beliefs haven't changed all that much since then and though I've always been a Democrat my beliefs put me far to the Left, where I guess you'd even find Reagan and Eisenhower (Nixon too maybe, the EPA started during his tenure, afterall) were they alive today too.
