Love it! How about a magnet extraction tool for your objectives/plugs? If you use a strong magnet you might be able to stack them as you extract them as well. Nice one Scotty bb
If you embed little magnets in the bottom of the plugs and the objective tokens it will be easier to pop them out with another magnet instead of trying to pry them out each time. Prying them out will probably damage the edges around them over time.
This is pretty similar to the table topper I made for my coffee table! I have a regular coffee table and don't have space in my 1 bedroom apartment for a full length table to play DnD with my friends. So I designed a topper that extended the top of the table by about 5 inches on either side to create an outer lip area that my players could put their drinks and snacks and dice in as well as doubling as a rolling tray. This all left the center area which was the dimensions of my actual coffee table surface free for minis. I also made a 1 inch grid the size of the central surface in photoshop and got it printed with a dry erase coating for DnD purposes. And it only cost me about $150 and a day of work. Super fun project.
me and my friends had done the same thing with my old metal fire pit/table on my back porch, though we had gone with the outer dice/drinks/etc area being raised up so the play area was walled off.
If you want the most out of your static grass applicator, stick the grounding rig into the glue you're applying the grass on ( I've also found a nail attached to the crocodile clip gets in the way less, than the little four leg unit does) and then get the static grass applicator as close to the surface as possible, when you apply it! Get those bad boys standing straight up!
Reminds me of model train layout boards I have make in the past. I would wire lighting to the buildings and hang it on the wall when not in use but I would light everything up to give an art look when on the wall.
I suggest you reinforce those holes that you plan to use to hang the board! Some cut bits of PVC pipe would go a long way. The MDF is, imo, likely go fail over time.
I did this, but made it in two parts, so it snapped together with pins and broke down to 2x4 for storage and transport. Solid oak trim, nice and durable! The foam hides on the inside of the two sides, with a slightly raised lip to prevent the faces from touching :D Game board and table toppers are my favorite type of hobby project!
Love the minivan bit. Being able to haul 4x8 sheets was what sold me on our Caravan. The car salesman was confused at first when I would pop the trunk of each van or SUV he wanted to show us, pull out a tape measure, then a few seconds later, ask to see the next vehicle.
A spray in spots of matte and gloss modpodge mixed with water will give a satin/eggshell finish which may make the board a little more wet looking. Fantastic project! It was a super fun watch
Dude, I can't even concentrate on your work in the table with that amazing outside green space on the background. If that's your garden or your view from home...CONGRATULATIONS MAN!
Short shorts and a kickstarter tease....this video is just one big thirst trap Table topper looks great. I really love the built in objective markers to make setup super easy
Minivans are pickup trucks you can use year round regardless of weather, store your cargo securirely, and drive 7 people in. Plus your friends won't ask you for help moving just cause you have a truck even though your car is great for moving
I recently invested in my own ASOIAF army because of your endorsement! In addition to your custom bases and tabletop, I’d love a tutorial on how to safely and efficiently store all of these minis now!
From experience with model railway baseboards (in the UK it is more common to use solidtop baseboards for model railways, whereas more common to use open frame for us model railroads) it is worth considering ply over mdf if you live in a humid area. Mdf is very prone to warping unless very well supported and treated. Ply is more stable in this regard. My wargaming table will be 2x 3ftx2ft boards of laser cut ply with a ply support frame. It is strong, rigid and lightweight. They were originally ordered for a model railway project, but a house move changed the plans. None of the above takes away anything from the video though.
I go to Menards and buy their “mistint” house paints, just paint that came out the wrong color. They’re usually stupid cheap and are very strong, house paint flows really well too and is self leveling. Perfect for that first coat on terrain boards or to mix with modpodge for terrain pieces.
Amazing build. I am a lot less good at building stuff so I asked a friend to build me a gaming furniture - it is a 6x4 table top with an edge to hold cards etc that mounts up and down a wall and can be stoved away quite nicely. I also got 4 bar stools as it it at bar table height. We played quite a few games already, 6x4 fits everything including Bolt Action. I am also interested in the Song of Fire and Ice it will be super cool if you have videos on how to paint that.
Minivans and the like for the win. When it comes to cars, it's most definitely practicality over looks for me. If I can't transport an entire couch in it, or a nice big camping setup, or sleep in it comfortably if need be, what's even the point?
Made a 40k table in 3 bits so it can do the 3 map sizes. Got 9mm MDF cut to size by B&Q cutting service, similar to Matt I used 34mm X 34mm planned wood to under the edges to give it rigity. Covered in sharp sand and PVA, oven dried the sand and should have sieved out the big bits. Between the boards I inserted aluminium pipe and then wood dowels to ensure the board will stay at the right height when joined. Primed, painted black with wall paint, drybrushed and then ronseal matt varnish. Very hard wearing surface. Finally some little toggle latches to keep together when joined.
Scott, this table is amazing! Your passion for the asoiaf miniature game has got me listening to the George Martin books while I paint my own miniatures. Fantastic work man! Can’t wait to see you play a game on that beautiful beast!
Dude! Wow! I didn’t realize that not only did you kick ass at mini painting, but that you could do the big craft stuff too! NICE JOB, and MOST IMPRESSIVE. :)
I always use sheets of plywood and clamps to get my foam from not popping up. The even pressure across the foam from the plywood helps. Hopefully this helps someone down the line.
There's just something about the sound of dice on finished foam tables that's so satisfying and I miss on the table mats, a small thing, but cool to see a foam table being made right now.
5:24 Nah, you made the right choice to carve and then burn, it's far more controlled in the outcome and you're less likely to start a small fire that creates a bubbling crater (which is why my 40k table has a toxic landfill/ green resin pool in the middle)
Power to the mini van owners and driver. ✊🏻🇦🇺 Plus your table topper, awesome. Living here in Japan space is often an issue, so this is defiantly a project for me.
That's great and I like how you considered ease of moving the movement trays. Now that your done if you had made the objective holders have a recess on just under half the width of the token you could have pressed down on that side to pop them up easily without resorting to a hobby knife. Oh well, if it really bugs you you can print an insert and drill them out with a drill the same diameter as the token.
Definitely improvements from your fist build. MDF is so heavy though and i hate how it sand and paints plywood just way better. You can get nice birch ply or even luan style will provide an excellent flat surface
Minivan crews REPRESENT Seriously, the utility is amazing. Easier to open up the whole back for storage than the vast majority of SUVs, enclosed storage rather than open like a truck and also a lot more menouv. . Meneurver.. . Manuvoar. . . . Maneuverable, than a truck with similar storage space.
Hanging the table on a wall is a nice idea but those holes WILL fray and snap with very little force. MDF is bucth cardboard afterall. You may be better off resting it a lip shelf with catches at the top to stop it tipping over.
MORE terrain! Love the way you handle and film it! How about one to add some flair to movement trays while still having the miniatures be able to go in and out?
you could have used screw in eyelets to hang ... i put two in the edge of my boards for hanging.... the best part of hanging is it helps stop your boards warping
This table is SICK! Have you thought about embedding small rare earth magnets in the objective marker plugs to take them out magnetically? I thought of that when you were using the xacto blade to remove them.
Thank you for making the distinction between a table and a table topper. Several other Hobby-tubers lazily call a project like this a "table". Of course it is nothing of the sort, and when corrected, they get real pissy.

I was totally thinking this, and make the back of the objective marker match the board, then you just flip them instead of needing to swap em
Great idea! Thought about it and didn't notice that someone else already mentioned it.
The world needs more abstract terrain.
thought of you while watching this build... I think he did you proud!

Indeed. MDF is bound together with formaldehyde.

Or he can put a divot on one side of the insert, that way it just one push to pop out the other side :)

Those short-shorts scream chick magnet too. Combined with the minivan - damn boss, what lady could resist?
I have been planning something similar for 40k and probably snow-themed for Space Wolves.
