Charo was NO SLOUCH EITHER...
If you want to see another version of this song that he did then look up Roy Clark Odd Couple on UA-cam and he does it EVEN FASTER !!!
@@reallymysterious4520 I was going to say the same thing. Not sure why but that version on the odd couple sounds a lot better. He uses a different guitar on the odd couple or maybe it was a later video where he has done the song more. And so has more practice.
@@billtmarchi4320Acoustic guitar. Has more of a pure heart.
You need to search for the clip from The Odd Couple tv show in the 1970s where Roy was a guest star and played lots of stringed instruments but saved this piece for the showstopper at the end of the episode. It is very much worth seeing. It’s pure acoustic and you see his hands working all his talent and magic. The bass slap and pluck he does in that one is amazing.
ua-cam.com/video/-xssnp7R51A/v-deo.html
yeah that clip was one shot too if I recall and Jack Klugman was so enthralled with his playing that he was such a fanboy after that.
This is the version that should be watched.
ua-cam.com/video/ilm2qeJndWo/v-deo.html and so many more. He was a comedian. ua-cam.com/video/IR3aVmM5h-w/v-deo.html
How about Stan the man
Roy Clark could absolutely shred. He was in the country music world in terms of popular music but had a massive range. I never understood that when I was young. Still not a country music fan but much respect to this man and others in the genre.
Funny watching all the young bucks discover the old master
I am guessing that this video was made in the early 80s when these types of visual effects were new. The video production company spent a lot of money on them and were determined to use it despite not having a clue to appearance.
Roy Clark was a master of string instruments, fiddle, guitar, banjo and mandolin. Member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and host of the Country Music variety show Hee Haw. Great reaction.
Roy Clark was the OG back in the day. Self taught multi instrumentalist, and a hilarious character.
One of the Top 10 guitarists ever imo
I think at some point in his life he was probably the best in the world.
Roy was a true genius!
A true showman no matter if he was going for laughs/fun or serious performance, just killed it at everything
He was a master. Period. One of the greats.
I used to watch him every Sunday night on 'Hee-Haw' with a whole bunch of other great musicians when I was a little kid 45 years ago. He can play anything with a string. You have to check that old TV show out sometime...it is country western based American. Cheers from Canada :)
I grew up in the innercity and we watched it too, VERY entertaining.
heck ya, it was lawrence welk , then hee haw, followed Mutual of Ohma's Wild kingdom with the Wonderful World of Disney every sunday night at my grandparents.
Heck ya good times! circa 1973 (re runs)
Yay Canada! Hi from your southerly neighbor.
@@bugvswindshield early 80s childhood too, and yeah wildkingdom (rerun first) then to PBS for Lawwrence Welk, then HeeHaw, the Wonderful World of Disney
You could stretch rubber bands around a cigar box and he would produce a masterpiece with it.
Roy got his break paying in Spinal Tap when Nigel Tufnel missed a concert. He traveled to Mexico the country instead of New Mexico to perform at a concert. Roy filled in for him.
Big upgrade from Nigel
Underrated master.
Also he plays rolling base and melodies at the same time
Roy could play the banjo, fiddle, violin and play them well. He is a legend.
Fiddle and violin are the same thing.
You're not wrong, though.
Excellent singer too! So multi-talented!
That video effect was something they used to do on TV back in the 70's. They don't really do that much anymore. I've seen similar effects on Carol Burnetts show
Roy was an amazing musician, and a wonderful man.
The fact that he had such controlled rasgueado and even golpe with the plectrum STILL amazes me. I gave up the pick because I was not able to achieve that level of precision.
It is really interesting to note that he borrows from both Classical and Flamenco traditions in such a way as to honor both but using a completely different technical approach than either.
Your response and commentary were wonderful.
Cheers!
Jone Ruiz, when he did this same song on an old TV show--the Odd Couple--it was incredible!
Prepared to be awed Roy Clark is an extraordinary talent who takes the guitar to new level
I hadn't seen this video before. I have seen perhaps two others of Roy Clark playing this same piece. Same music but on a different guitar with a different sound. I know he was also a comedian, but his music was serious.
roy is damn precise, super spot on most of the time
Roy Clark is just as talented on Banjo, and violin ✌️❤️🇺🇲
He was not just a heehaw country guy. He is one of the best guitarists of all time. Also classically trained. R.I.P. Mr. Clark
Great Reaction. He is a legend . Total control of the guitar. Could you react to.Steve Vai For The Love Of God with the danish orchestra. Thank you
he is the best!
Roy is the best ever! Guitar, fiddle,banjo...40 instrument
I AM old school rocker ....my boys Rush, Zeppelin, Genesis, ELP,
Floyd.
Grew up hearing Roy Clark on Hee Haw...
I always picked up on his skills. That he really did not show his guitar talent.
I am not sure if you have heard of Estas Tonne.... his street performance of the song of the Golden Dragon. Has a spiritual way of playing, touches my soul every listen.
The traffic stops people all stop. Just a musical gift.
Cheers
Chet Atkins gave out a guitar achievement award. I think he only gave it to four or five people.
Of course he never gave one to André Segovia, he didn't have to. He never gave one to Roy Clark, but he always played with Roy. And Chet was always smiling when he played with Roy.
Roy Clark could play anything with strings guitar, banjo, fiddle very well. Country music Hall of Famer siger.
He was a musical genius he could play any instrument known to man
Roy was the master at anything with strings. Thanks for doing this one!
He’s a real badass on the Banjo as well!
6:30 When Roy starts to slap his guitar, he is actually mimicking a flamingo dancers (male) foot stomps!!
Truely one of the greatest to ever strum a string.
Flamenco NOT flamingo.
Country & Western artists didn't get many chances to stray from their chosen style, the way Brad Paisley could in recent times. Roy was one exception, along with Glen Campbell, and the master - Chet Atkins.
Chey Atkins ... he lulled you into thinking what he did was nothing. He was extraordinary.
You should check Roy on the 12 string Spanish guitar and on a 6 string acoustic. He can play any stringed ineterment.
True story: Eddie Van Halen asked Alice Cooper if he could set up a lesson with Roy Clark -- Van Halen wanted to learn some of Roy's techniques. Roy was a boss!
Roy is one of the Masters of stringed instruments.
He was humble and kind.
The weirdness in the video was what was thought cool at the time. They were trying for the psychedelic look. This was long before TV and movie producers learned or care that graphics like that’s any kind of strobing can trigger seizures in people with epilepsy and other disorders.
It was also before they got the reaction from the public about how incredibly annoying it was. Like when the made the picture a tiny portion of the screen, I was like “You idiots, this is a live performance by a virtuoso musician of a difficult, beautiful piece. The whole point is his playing, his picking, his chord work.!”
Wow , Roy Clark was amazing.....wow !
Roy Clark is an excellent Banjo player as well.
Listen to the acoustic version, you can see it on the old Odd Couple show!!
Jone,
I discovered you through your reactions to Rush, my favourite group since I was introduced to their music at the age of 12.
I love Roy Clark. Like many country music stars long ago, he played many instruments, but he played all of them very, very well (guitar, banjo, "fiddle", violin, mandolin, piano, harmonica, others I can't remember).
Whether you react to the video I'm sending you or not, I KNOW you will enjoy seeing him play this on an acoustic steel guitar. It's a clip ftom The Odd Couple which was a sit-com ~ 1968. The really cool thing to see is the reaction of the 2 stars of the show.
It's obvious that they had never heard him play this. As the song progresses they stop "acting" and become mesmerized with Roy Clark's skill. The smiles leave their faces and is replaced with AWE! It is really cool to see.
They weren't expecting what they got😂
As I said, if you don't make a video at least watch this!
Link will follow in a replay.
Respectfully,
Lorenzo

Guitar, Banjo, and Mandolin - as well as violin... Roy Clarke was an amazingly talented musician.
You will correct me, but I think Flaminco is played with finger picks and nylon strings. Roy plays with one pick and steel strings. It floored me 40 years ago and still does today
try iron maiden hallowed be thy name live in toronto. amazing singer, 3 guitars and a bass and drummer.yes the singer is running around the stage while he sings and the guitars and bass and playing while they jump and down.the band has it all.
Roy Clark is a mutant. lol
He won the national banjo championship at age 14 and 15. From the reactions I've seen on here I would recommend Tuck and Patti's cover of Hendrix's Castles Made of Sand/Little Wing. It's quite the interpretation through his guitar playing and her vocal.
Anyone who hasn't heard it should give it a listen. Need to listen to the full studio version (6 minutes). One track guitar and one track vocal.
The reason for the video affect you see is because of the decade that the video was filmed.
The 1970’s, when TV was learning to play with affects like this, and it got way worse before it got better.
Haven't listened to this yet.. don't have to.. I know Roy is going to be amazing.. Banjo playing..... now I will listen.. and I'm sure I'll be blown away. because this man can pic a banjo
Try Tommy Emmanuel Initiation. The man is amazing
3:46 Roy Clark was a master of ANYTHING with strings! Banjo, Fiddle, Guitar, etc. Check out his version of Fulsom Prison Blues! So much talent and a truly nice man!
Roy was one of kind. Anything with strings, piano, and harmonica. He had fast hands. Not bad for the son of a Virginia tobacco farmer.
It's great. I thought the performances with the acoustic were even better. He's great
Him and Glen Campbell two of the best
there are so many awesome guitarist coming from country music in the states
Was so hoping that you'd get to this reaction. Clark was the typical Country Star - a pure performer who also happened to be an incredible musician. To be honest, I can't claim to be a huge fan of the genre... but there is no denying the sheer number of incredibly talented guitarists and musicians. To be honest, and to my great surprise, I doubt that there is any greater concentration of guitar-playing talent anywhere in the world than currently resides in Nashville, TN. Looking ahead, there are a number of virtuoso recordings you might enjoy... I'd start with the 2012 Austin City Limits performance of Erik Johnson's 'Cliffs of Dover' (search 'Eric Johnson - Cliffs Of Dover - Live')
The little screen thing was a 70s affectation.😊
That performance of Cliffs of Dover is one of my favorites of all time. I have a sentimental attachment to the song, and it's nice to see that somebody else knows that performance of it.
My favorite string master is Roy
When you can't really see what he's doing he's doing the bass-slap thing
The wavy effect you found annoying was a product of what was cutting edge digital video effects in the 1970's. We had one of those machines in the studio I worked in in '88. You loaded the software on an 8 inch floppy disk.
Ever hear Chet Atkins or Tommy Emmanuel? Both worthy of any guitarist's attention!
Roy Clark was a world class guitar player who could play country pop or classical at will
Roy Clark is, hands down, the best guitar player that's ever graced the surface of this earth.
Ridiculous statement, great player though
God put his blessings on Roy Clark
Roy Clark G.O.A.T.
Bangor his favorite
I have really been enjoying this journey with you. Thanks for the great reactions. I hope you will consider reacting to the guitarist duo Rodrigo y Gabriella soon. You would probably enjoy their performances
I thought I was doing good to get Lennon's triplets down on 'All My Loving'. I see this and I have a ways to go. His right hand is one of the best I've ever seen,
What he was doing was "plucking", for a much better view and understanding, watch his appearance on "The Odd Couple" TV show where he did an even better version.
Thanks, dude!
TY
A lot of people thought that Roy Clark was just some hick because of the TV show HeeHaw, but he was actually among the best guitarists in the world.
That video "thing" was probably from the mid 60s to the early 70s. With new electronics they were finding out new ways to use video and its effects.
His 12 string version is awesome.
He also plays this on a 12 string
Peace, Love!!
He could play any stringed instrument and do it well.
Clark's nickname when he was starting out was Lightning Fingers.
May have already been stated in another comment, but Charo also does an impressive version of this song.
Very different from Clark's version, too. Most in the USA remember Charo from her appearances on Hollywood Squares (game show). Her guitar talent went unmentioned, sadly. She's a gifted player in her own right!
@@raygunsforronnie847 Didn't she study with Segovia?
@B C yes, she did. Her introduction to America was when she performed with Segovia at Carnegie Hall.
Watch him play the banjo and the violin (fiddle) also. Roy Clark was multi talented!
“What’s happening with the video” that would be called the 70’s
I'm glad I finally found someone who can pronounce the title of the song correctly. And it's obvious why that is. However I find it very frustrating when one of us D__b Americans mangle words from other cultures.
If you want to put yourself out on UA-cam, learn how to say it right.
Thank you for this reaction, it's very sad there are so many great artists from the 60s, 70s & 80s, are nlonger with us. Reaction videos like this presents really great performances to a younger generation that have not seen them.
You've heard of After Effects. So far as what was happening with the video with the overlapping oval pattern, that was Before Effects. 🤠
Look him up playing it on a 12string Spanish guitar. If you listen very close it sometimes sounds like 2 guitars
That video style is from the gee whiz days of video editing and "whats this button do?" special effects
That was state of the art graphics for the time. Be grateful it was in color!
amazing
I always like to compare Roy Clark's version of this piece with Charo's from around the same time.
You're right about the video. Someone decided to be "artsy."
Roy could play any instrument with strings, awesome talent..just my opinion, but I find Roy's version of this song much more impressive...and sounds more natural 😬
That screen movement was considered "special effects" at the time
Like this version over the Odd Couple version
Someone once asked Jimi Hendrix how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world. His response? "I wouldn't know, ask Roy Clark."
My brothers and I watched HeeHaw and waited for Roy to play. He was funny. And beyond belief. I had a middle finger that was permanently dis figured, but my brother Don was very good.
Roy Clark was an amazing guitarist, no credit really, do to the fact he didn't play blues or rock.
Not only is he a master on guitar, but also the banjo. Do yourself a favor and watch a few videos of his banjo playing.
They do that with the videos to avoid copyright
I believe that Roy is playing Carlos Montoya's Version of this Classical Guitar Version..🎸🤔
I love Roy Clark dearly as a musician, but for this song, I like Charo's version better. You should also check out Jesse Cook, my favorite guitarist! He's fabulous! Check out Luna Llena. There's a concert online called One Night at The Metropolis that is a classic in which they perform my favorite version of this original song. He switches between flatpick and fingerstyle in the same song! The orignal release was guitar only on his Gravity album, but the concert version adds violin and the conversation between lead guitar and violin is divine!
As for the video effects... welcome to the 70's!
