With modern technology you can see that he is playing faster than the T.V. Cameras can record. His strum hand is just a blur. The Odd Couple video is my favourite version of this.

Back in the 1960s and 70s I was a radio disk jockey in Albuquerque. Roy was on the bill for one of country road shows my station sponsored. I was there when he played "Malaguena" live onstate with the flu and a 102 degree temperature. Sweating like a stevedore, he played it FLAWLESSLY. Wonderfully nice guy and a towering talent!

Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona wrote Malagueña in 1933. It originally part of a larger piece (Suite Andalucía). He based it on a solo piano piece by Louis Gottschalk called "Souvenirs d'Andalousie" ("Memories of Andalucia").
You can find lots of classical guitar performances of Malagueña on UA-cam. One good version is by Pepe Romero. There are also lots of versions of "Souvenirs d'Andalousie."

This music is not just a guitar player but he is playing a song that was inspired by the flamenco and Spanish composers who highlighted the great music traditions of classical
Spain. This is a composition that only an expert could ever come close to trying. Roy Clark was a country music star in his day and appeared regularly on the 70s tv show Hee Haw. He made the beautiful song Yesterday When I Was Young. For the fiddle check out Orange Blossom Special. Also check out Ghost Riders in the Sky.

I loved watching your reactions to this. You both went from peaceful grooving, to intense listening as the music became more intricate and complex. Roy did that to people with his jaw-dropping performances.
If you want some more virtuoso guitar playing, find the video with Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins playing together. They are also superior guitarists from 2 different genres (rock and country) that show off their immense skills together. It’s a blessing to watch masters in performance.

Roy Clark was a true artist on many instruments! When it's just Roy and a guitar and there is just so much music coming out, it's incredible! The version on acoustic guitar on The Odd Couple shows his hands really well. The version on the 12-string guitar is great, too. Really, most anything with Roy Clark is good.

The song you just reacted to was also featured on an episode of the odd couple. In that episode he played this on an acoustic guitar and I personally think it sounded even better, if you can imagine it being better. Roy Clark was an all round entertainer. He could play any string instrument, he could sing, and he was a good comedian. He co hosted a TV show in the 70’s called Hee Haw. It was a comedy country music show. On that platform you could marvel at his musical side as well as his goofy comical side. He was a truly gifted performer.

Roy Clark was the co-host, along with fellow country singer Buck Owens, of a comedy variety show called Hee Haw for years. I was just a little kid when it was on and it was all really goofy stuff, but whenever Roy played and sang duets with other artists I really understood even as a child how great he was. He could play anything with strings mesh together with every other artist he performed with. He was funny too, always with a sly twinkle in his eye when he told his corny jokes.

Yesterday When I Was Young is a beautiful ballad, then there's his humorous side in Thank God and Greyhound You're Gone. He was one of the hosts on a long running country variety show called Hee Haw. There are several clips from there that show his ability with the violin and the banjo, along with the guitar. Another clip that shows Roy using a traditional acoustic guitar to play Malaguena is when he appeared on the Odd Couple tv show.

    Greetings Jay and Amber
This instrumental rendition is of the song "Malagueña Salerosa". Originating from Spain, the song possesses a strong influence from Flamenco music. It tells a heartfelt story that resonates with the emotions of longing, desire, and love. However, its composition was first composed by Mexicans Nicandro Castillo and Elpidio Ramirez in a Huasteca or Huapango style of the state / region of Hildalgo, Mexico.
It sounds "western" because it is an electric guitar NOT acoustic. Yes, Roy Clark is a great guitarist. He does a marvelous electric guitar version of the song. However, there are Spanish and Mexican guitarists who have done renditions that would make Roy Clark's jaw drop, at least with acoustic guitars. There are probably some electric as well, but personally, I haven't heard or know of any. That doesn't mean there are not any great ones.
The 2 best known versions are from Miguel Aceves Mejia and Javier Solis. In a more Flamenco Bolero style. you can try listening to Los Tres Ases "(Three Aces) or Los Panchos (The Franks). You can also listen to Placido Domingo's Spanish Tenor version. it amazing!!

Used to drive by his home in Tulsa almost every day. Yeah, that Tulsa.
Glad to see y'all react to it. He was an incredible talent.

Roy Clark excelled at so many instruments! If you are looking for more guitarists, you should check out anything by Chet Atkins, generally recognized as one of the greats and probably influenced Roy Clark.
