He was a banjo player and singer/songwriter, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1978. He was a featured regular on a TV show that ran for years called "Hee-Haw", which was a staple of American Saturday night entertainment. Roy Clark and Buck Owens were the show's hosts, and they invited some of the greats in Country music and other forms of entertainment. It was a silly yet wholesome bit of Americana that we could use more of today.
Glen was my uncle I used to hang out with him and the family on their home on 4th street in Albuquerque . That is when he was playing on the Dick Bills show I was 8 then I am 69 now. He was and always will be a huge talent .

I admired Glen, even though I was and still am a huge Beatles Fan...I went for melody and harmony [two good lookin' sisters lol].Glen's life story is amazing...he came from humble beginnings to rise above to musical excellence and his voice, wow! what a singer! I still sing some of his songs in senior homes. I was a music teacher in part because of people like Glen inspiring quality and excellence...I took it as far as I could take it. Young people are discovering him on youtube and most are floored by both his musicianship and his voice. These metal head guys often admire his guitar skills technically using the "Shred" factor," but don't get what Glen was all about as an entertainer and singer in all genres. For God sakes he was a member of the Wrecking Crew, played and sing back up many records before fame...Sinatra, The Beach Boys, you name it. They watch a clip and don't even know he hosted his own Variety show, participated in comedy sketches, was in a few movies [True Grit original flick is a classic]. He went through terrible struggles with drugs and came out on top. He played the guitar so melodically, musically, not just a technical show off. I've have seen interviews about playing golf with Allice Cooper regularly 😂, who would have thunk that?

This was Roy and Glen basically playing at 30% throttle, for the audience. Glen did bump up to about 40% throttle around the 4:40 mark, just because his fingers were bored. This little, entertaining snippet is just the tip of the tip of the tip of the talent iceberg, that these two legendary musicians possessed.
I checked this out on Google and found at least two sites confirming the truth of this. It was set up by Alice Cooper who told Van Halen, Campbell lived close to him.

Glen was a member of the "wrecking crew" , the LA studio musicians that were on every album made in the 50's to the 80's in LA before he went on to a solo career. He was such a legit player that EVH actually took a few lessons from him. Roy was probably one of the biggest IYKYK players that ever existed. People think of him as just some guy from Hee Haw but the man was as good as it gets. His picking skills are insane. More people know about Glen's skills than Roy's but they both are top tier players. It is nice to see them getting their due still.

And of course the professionalism of a band that plays with great players all the time, just knows when and how to follow.

Who else can hear the words to this song as you listen to the music? Being born in 1967, my childhood was immersed in this music. My father was the lead singer and guitar player in a gospel group which included a Dobro Master and an award winning fiddle player. It is a past that I will always cherish.

Glen Campbell's acoustic guitar playing of the song is just as good as his playing with an electric guitar. The only difference was that when he performed the song with the electric guitar, he played part of it with the guitar behind his head and didn't miss a note. There's a version of each here on UA-cam. A member of The Wrecking Crew along with Leon Russell.
Glen was an amazing musician & singer. Roy was the best I ever heard. He was a virtuoso on guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin. Roy won the National Banjo Championship in 1947 & 1948, at age 14 & 15. One of the hosts of Hee Haw which was a country version of Laugh In. Laugh In lasted five years- Hee Haw lasted 25 years.
Glen uses a 12 string Ovation guitar. I have a Glen Campbell Ovation six string Signature Series guitar that he released before my time. The sound has more brilliance than most acoustic guitars. The keys are plated with gold, all to making it a collector's item. Came with a custom fitted hardshell case. I saw Roy Clark in person not long before he passed. My impression of him was he was humble; good hearted and laughed at himself at times. Musically the world looks a little dimmer when these great artists leave us.
Roy was hands down amazing. I took my father (who looked like he could be Roy's twin brother) to a concert in Nashville, Indiana in 1995 and to this day is still one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Roy crossed over so many musical boundaries (I'm a dyed in the wool pop/rock musician, who also is a fiddle player) and I was always so entertained by him. He had an awesome stage presence and was as good a comedian as he was a musician. Miss him greatly.

Roy refused to pigeonhole himself into one genre of music, and we are all fortunate for that. I recently dived down a rabbit hole of his non-country work, especially playing with Joe Pass and Clarence Gatemouth Brown. His joy in playing with other talented musicians in a variety of styles was so evident.
As a Johnny Cash fan, you will love him and Roy Clark doing Orange Blossom Special. I've never seen Johnny so relaxed and having so much fun ... he was two-fisting harmonicas!
Two of the greatest of all-time. And when you add in that Glen is one of the best singers of his era, you realize what an unbelievable talent he was. Roy had a less "poppy" voice, and was mostly country. But Glen crossed over into pop -- one of the first musicians to do that successfully.
For those who are too young to know, Glen Campbell was one of The Wrecking Crew, the musicians who were hired to play on countless LA studio recording sessions for practically every top level recording artist of any genre in the 60’s. They were part of so many hit songs. Glen said he could not read music, but he could do whatever was asked anyway. Amazing. Roy Clark was always one of my favorites. Fabulous guitar abilities. I suffered through so many Hee Haw episodes just to listen to him-and watch all the beautiful women on the show except Lulu! Hey, I was a just kid then and fat shaming wasn’t a thing.
I read somewhere that Roy Clark thought Jerry Reed was perhaps the best guitarist he had ever seen. I remember he referred him as a master. Talk about a compliment coming from someone like him! 😮
Chet Atkins did a PBS show with Mark Knopfler many decades ago, and it was one of best guitar shows that I have ever seen. They played all kinds of music and it was quite impressive.

I have enjoyed these two geniuses for many years, was a teenager when Glen Campbell's albums came out and were wonderful, Roy Clark came to the fore when he performed on television on various shows. They were multifaceted in the instruments they had mastered and were a constant source of joy to music lovers. Glen could play just about everything including the bagpipes which I loved. Roy, too, could play so many instruments with true mastery. I am 76 this November so I have had the pleasure of enjoying these two great musicians for many, many years and, yes, they had fun together and the whole band behind them in that performance were having a blast watching and listening to greatness.

As a 60 year old woman, I grew up watching Hee Haw every week. Great show, wholesome family entertainment that exposed everyone my age to incredibly talented people! In my house my father beat into our little heads that Chet Atkins was the best guitar player in the world, Roy Clark was next and then Glen Campbell was right behind them.
You can NEVER go wrong watching any Glen Campbell video! He was an incredibly gifted and generous musician! I got to see probably hundreds of his performances over the years. First met him around 1961 when I was 10 years old. He was a family friend. He was definitely a genius and a really nice man.

The man at the beginning used to feature in the show "Hee Haw" singing as part of a gospel group, among other things (their rendition of the song "I'll Fly Away" is still one of my favourites).
I used to do a lot of stage hand work and worked a Roy Clark show. Crazy talented. And he had a line of instruments he’s easily play. It was awesome!! 🤘

In Roy's words, "it just might scar you up!" 😂 He was basically joking around that he is so good at guitar that any young guitarists who saw him play the song might decide to give up learning guitar! I have watched this video many times in my life; and, I enjoy it every time as though I was watching it for the first time. They blow me away with their talent.
Im not a country music fan but I used to watch Hee Haw just to hear who Roy was playing with and enjoy some of the best guitar playing there is. Glenn Campbell played with a number of bands through his carreer but seemed to settle down to an easy listening style but his great guitar playing was always there. Another great one is when he played with Jerry Reed.

Im not sure if youre aware of this, but for a brief moment in the mid 60s, Glen was a Beach Boy. He replaced Brian Wilson for a moment on bass and falsetto vocals. There are You Tube videos of Glen doing a medley of Beach Boy songs. You need to check it out and react to it.
Starting out seeing Grandpa Jones really put a smile on my face. I haven't thought about him in years. My dad and I used to watch HeeHaw all the time and my dad just passed, so it was good to think about that. Thanks for that.

I love watching the reaction of people who react to Glen and Roy. I grew up listening and watching them. My parents loved them and we always watched Hee Haw on the television and of course their music was on all the Country music stations. I seen Roy play once when I was very young and unfortunately I do not remember his performance or any of the other performers, but (lol), I do remember Grandpa Jones' old hound dog on stage. I'm so glad that more younger people are finding out about some of these older, highly talented, ground breaking musicians. Their music will continue to live on and on.
The outlaws had the best version about 9 minutes "Ghost Riders In The Sky." I'm a rock and roll player, but even I know about Roy Clark's picking and Glen Campbell's picking. Both of them are of the highest caliber, when it comes to picking a guitar, with Roy Clark it's anything with strings. This is a good song it's hard to mess it up.
Glen and Roy were among the best guitarists of my generation. If you haven't checked them out yet, you should listen to Glen playing the William Tell Overture (any live performance) and Roy playing Malaguena (the Odd Couple episode). You won't be disappointed!

He was said to be the most consistent and repeatable guitarists of all time, capable of playing take after take exactly the same.

Hee Haw was a show we did not miss at my house. I am so glad I grew up watching the greats of country music. I have always thought that Roy Clark was never given the credit due for his playing. He was so talented. Loved watching those two play together, they were having a blast. Hope you will cover more of Roy and get a true appreciaion of the man. Tommy Emmanuel is certainly an excellent guitarist. His style and the other "Masters of the Instrument" cover different ranges of musical styles. Part of that may be related to his Australian background. There's a lot of distance between Australia and Nashville and it's much more than just musical tastes. I don't think there is a meaningful comparison between these different musical backgrounds or the styles of their music. They're both excellent and yet they're quite different from each other...

From what I understand, neither of these men read music. At any rate, they both have to rank pretty high on anybody's list of top guitarists and entertainers.
Musicality is internal, notation is external… it’s a creative boon to NOT rely on printed music, as once you rely on it, you’re using your eyes more than your ears, and less likely to play with the form 🤷🏼♀️🙂

These men were legends and would have been whether they could or couldn't read music. I have a friend that is a pianist and can read music but, rarely does because, he usually plays by ear.
As an incredibly old duffer, I first knew this song by Bing Crosby, then the instrumental version by The Hurricanes, which got some airplay in the early '60s. I guess Vaughan Monroe had a huge hit with it in the late '40s. It's one of the first songs I learned, by ear, in my teens. But THIS! Holy Poo!!! Love both of these incredible artists, but you've given me my first listen to them doing this tune. Doin' it UP! ! ! Thanks for the lift!

There is no telling how many albums Glen played on back in the day. He was the most sought after studio guitarist in his time.
He did some excellent sets on He Haw too.
What Campbell did as as a session guitarist, Page was already doing in England. The rest is history.

Glen Campbell's acoustic guitar playing of the song is just as good as his playing with an electric guitar. The only difference was that when he performed the song with the electric guitar, he played part of it with the guitar behind his head and didn't miss a note. There's a version of each here on UA-cam. A member of The Wrecking Crew along with Leon Russell.

Glen was an amazing musician & singer. Roy was the best I ever heard. He was a virtuoso on guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin. Roy won the National Banjo Championship in 1947 & 1948, at age 14 & 15. One of the hosts of Hee Haw which was a country version of Laugh In. Laugh In lasted five years- Hee Haw lasted 25 years.
Glen uses a 12 string Ovation guitar.
I have a Glen Campbell Ovation six string Signature Series guitar that he released before my time. The sound has more brilliance than most acoustic guitars. The keys are plated with gold, all to making it a collector's item. Came with a custom fitted hardshell case.
I saw Roy Clark in person not long before he passed. My impression of him was he was humble; good hearted and laughed at himself at times.
Musically the world looks a little dimmer when these great artists leave us.

Glen was watching Roy so intently. I loved the smile when he realized this was going to be "one of those performances".
2 of the best of all time. I can't imagine how someone could play that part on a 12 string, but Glenn made it look so easy.
Roy was hands down amazing. I took my father (who looked like he could be Roy's twin brother) to a concert in Nashville, Indiana in 1995 and to this day is still one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Roy crossed over so many musical boundaries (I'm a dyed in the wool pop/rock musician, who also is a fiddle player) and I was always so entertained by him. He had an awesome stage presence and was as good a comedian as he was a musician. Miss him greatly.

Roy refused to pigeonhole himself into one genre of music, and we are all fortunate for that. I recently dived down a rabbit hole of his non-country work, especially playing with Joe Pass and Clarence Gatemouth Brown. His joy in playing with other talented musicians in a variety of styles was so evident.
As a Johnny Cash fan, you will love him and Roy Clark doing Orange Blossom Special. I've never seen Johnny so relaxed and having so much fun ... he was two-fisting harmonicas!

Two of the greatest of all-time. And when you add in that Glen is one of the best singers of his era, you realize what an unbelievable talent he was. Roy had a less "poppy" voice, and was mostly country. But Glen crossed over into pop -- one of the first musicians to do that successfully.

For those who are too young to know, Glen Campbell was one of The Wrecking Crew, the musicians who were hired to play on countless LA studio recording sessions for practically every top level recording artist of any genre in the 60’s. They were part of so many hit songs. Glen said he could not read music, but he could do whatever was asked anyway. Amazing. Roy Clark was always one of my favorites. Fabulous guitar abilities. I suffered through so many Hee Haw episodes just to listen to him-and watch all the beautiful women on the show except Lulu! Hey, I was a just kid then and fat shaming wasn’t a thing.

Chet Atkins did a PBS show with Mark Knopfler many decades ago, and it was one of best guitar shows that I have ever seen. They played all kinds of music and it was quite impressive.

I have enjoyed these two geniuses for many years, was a teenager when Glen Campbell's albums came out and were wonderful, Roy Clark came to the fore when he performed on television on various shows. They were multifaceted in the instruments they had mastered and were a constant source of joy to music lovers. Glen could play just about everything including the bagpipes which I loved. Roy, too, could play so many instruments with true mastery. I am 76 this November so I have had the pleasure of enjoying these two great musicians for many, many years and, yes, they had fun together and the whole band behind them in that performance were having a blast watching and listening to greatness.

As a 60 year old woman, I grew up watching Hee Haw every week. Great show, wholesome family entertainment that exposed everyone my age to incredibly talented people! In my house my father beat into our little heads that Chet Atkins was the best guitar player in the world, Roy Clark was next and then Glen Campbell was right behind them.
That segment was on Hee Haw. A show that was on about 20 years but Roy Clark was part of the shows every week with different guest
You can NEVER go wrong watching any Glen Campbell video! He was an incredibly gifted and generous musician! I got to see probably hundreds of his performances over the years. First met him around 1961 when I was 10 years old. He was a family friend. He was definitely a genius and a really nice man.

Roy Clark & Glen Campbell (may they both rest in peace) were among the most sought after studio musicians. The man at the beginning used to feature in the show "Hee Haw" singing as part of a gospel group, among other things (their rendition of the song "I'll Fly Away" is still one of my favourites).

Im not a country music fan but I used to watch Hee Haw just to hear who Roy was playing with and enjoy some of the best guitar playing there is. Glenn Campbell played with a number of bands through his carreer but seemed to settle down to an easy listening style but his great guitar playing was always there. Another great one is when he played with Jerry Reed.

Glenn campbell was part of the wrecking crew which was a group that basically did almost all of the recording no matter what the general was in los angeles for a significant amount of time
I just basically put the same thing you did before I read any of the comments, I just finished watching the documentary of The wrecking Crew.
Glenn was also a part of The Beach Boys for awhile. He once commented on how hard it was to play bass/any deep music, while singing high notes.

Im not sure if youre aware of this, but for a brief moment in the mid 60s, Glen was a Beach Boy. He replaced Brian Wilson for a moment on bass and falsetto vocals. There are You Tube videos of Glen doing a medley of Beach Boy songs. You need to check it out and react to it.
Great seeing these two together. Still enjoy their individual hits, such as "Gentle on My Mind" and "Thank God and Greyhound You're Gone".
Starting out seeing Grandpa Jones really put a smile on my face. I haven't thought about him in years. My dad and I used to watch HeeHaw all the time and my dad just passed, so it was good to think about that. Thanks for that.

I love watching the reaction of people who react to Glen and Roy. I grew up listening and watching them. My parents loved them and we always watched Hee Haw on the television and of course their music was on all the Country music stations. I seen Roy play once when I was very young and unfortunately I do not remember his performance or any of the other performers, but (lol), I do remember Grandpa Jones' old hound dog on stage. I'm so glad that more younger people are finding out about some of these older, highly talented, ground breaking musicians. Their music will continue to live on and on.
The outlaws had the best version about 9 minutes "Ghost Riders In The Sky." I'm a rock and roll player, but even I know about Roy Clark's picking and Glen Campbell's picking. Both of them are of the highest caliber, when it comes to picking a guitar, with Roy Clark it's anything with strings. This is a good song it's hard to mess it up.
I saw Roy play a few times. Once during halftime at a Shriners game. He was genuinely a happy guy, and extremely talented.
Glen and Roy were among the best guitarists of my generation. If you haven't checked them out yet, you should listen to Glen playing the William Tell Overture (any live performance) and Roy playing Malaguena (the Odd Couple episode). You won't be disappointed!

Glen Campbell was part of the Wrecking Crew. For nearly 10 years he was one of the most in-demand session guitarists on earth. He never learned to read music well enough to play by it. He was said to be the most consistent and repeatable guitarists of all time, capable of playing take after take exactly the same.

Hee Haw was a show we did not miss at my house. I am so glad I grew up watching the greats of country music. I have always thought that Roy Clark was never given the credit due for his playing. He was so talented. Loved watching those two play together, they were having a blast. Hope you will cover more of Roy and get a true appreciaion of the man. As for the man in the beginnjng, 'Grandpa' on Hee Haw, was a hell of a banjo player. There was a ton of talent throughout the years of that show.

Tommy Emmanuel is certainly an excellent guitarist. His style and the other "Masters of the Instrument" cover different ranges of musical styles. Part of that may be related to his Australian background. There's a lot of distance between Australia and Nashville and it's much more than just musical tastes. I don't think there is a meaningful comparison between these different musical backgrounds or the styles of their music. They're both excellent and yet they're quite different from each other...
I grew up listening to these two. I was never a big fan of Roy Clark until I was literally dragged to one of his concerts. OMG! He could and did play all stringed instruments. He was Amazing!

This live William Tell he did with an orchestra, and he started tremolo picking with it behind his head and it is super clean...made me want to just turn my guitar into a coffee table.
I've always loved hard rock but I saw Roy Clark at a rodeo in Oklahoma a long time ago and it's still one of the best performances I've ever seen and heard.
That's "Grandpaw", one of the recurring characters on the show "Hee-Haw", which was just as goofy and rednecky as it sounds, but it brought us some amazing music.

Louis Marshall Jones, known professionally as Grandpa Jones, was a singer, songwriter, and banjo player whose career spanned from 1932 until his death in 1998 at the age of 84. He suffered 2 strokes after performing at the Grand Old Opry and died the next day.

From what I understand, neither of these men read music. At any rate, they both have to rank pretty high on anybody's list of top guitarists and entertainers.
Musicality is internal, notation is external… it’s a creative boon to NOT rely on printed music, as once you rely on it, you’re using your eyes more than your ears, and less likely to play with the form 🤷🏼♀️🙂
@katiee263 I can read music (not as well as I used to, due to lack of practice). I always envied people that could play by ear. These men were legends and would have been whether they could or couldn't read music. I have a friend that is a pianist and can read music but, rarely does because, he usually plays by ear.
As an incredibly old duffer, I first knew this song by Bing Crosby, then the instrumental version by The Hurricanes, which got some airplay in the early '60s. I guess Vaughan Monroe had a huge hit with it in the late '40s. It's one of the first songs I learned, by ear, in my teens. But THIS! Holy Poo!!! Love both of these incredible artists, but you've given me my first listen to them doing this tune. Doin' it UP! ! ! Thanks for the lift!
