I have a friend whose parents had a country band and were on Hee Haw a couple of times. They said Roy was so friendly and welcoming to the acts that came on their show. I loved to hear his music and still like to hear it. I really miss him a lot.
Later in life, I had a close friend who was a bit of a music snob, having been classically trained on the piano. He looked down on country music until one day when Roy was performing live on TV and broke a string. Without breaking rhythm, Roy changed key and played around the broken string. That day on, my friend told me he took Roy to be a serious musician.
Here's a piece that has an Australian guitarist start a song playing a 5-string guitar (the A-string is broken), rather than take ten seconds to swap to his second guitar. ua-cam.com/video/j01Ho74qRx0/v-deo.html
When I was 17(1981) I took my gf to the county fair to see Roy Clark, she thought I lost my mind both being metal heads, after picking her jaw up off the floor she realized I was quite sane. Roy Clark’s talent and ability defies description, you have to experience it.
These guys are smoking. When I try to tell some of the younger ones, they kinda giggle. I tell them to try and copy it, seriously. Well, they play a different tune after that. I have to admit after seeing Jeff Beck, I'm a Strat guy ever since. When I saw Glen playing a Sunburst Strat on the PBS Special, it warmed my heart. They may be gone from this earth, but they live in our hearts.
Most guitarists would be thinking, “Oh, I hope I don’t make a mistake during this TV show!” Roy was probably thinking about what he’d order for dinner that evening… What a crazy amount of talent In one musician!!!
I think Johnny Cash said it best when introducing Roy on his TV show, "When he talks, he makes you laugh, and and then, when he plays, he makes you listen, 'cause he's one of the best, Mr. Roy Clark!"
If Roy's playing doesn't bring a smile to your face, then nothing will. This dude was at a whole other level. To play at that level of expertise, and still clown around at the same time is astounding. He was a multi instrumentalist and a megatalent. RIP Roy and thank you for the great musical legacy you left us with.
Watching Roy Clark on HeeHaw was a weekly family event when I was a child. He was a virtuoso guitarist, and his facial expressions always had us laughing! Great memories!

With Roy Clark comedic skills it's easy to overlook how good he was at playing his instruments especially on his guitars. As you mention Roy was an all-around entertainer and actor. Many have said Roy was a one man show. 🎸🪕🎻🎤
There's a serious reason why there aren't lots of instructionals on any platform covering Roy's guitar masterpieces. This is the true definition of ORIGINALITY.
On my first visit to the famous Texas honky tonk "Billy Bob's" I saw him and everyone left stunned at his mastery and versatility. Like many, I only knew him from limited TV viewing, and like everyone there our heads were spinning upon really experiencing him. And the biggest smile in the history of show business. Like someone you'd feel was your best and closest friend.
Roy Clark had so much fun when he played that his technical skills were under appreciated it seemed here in the U.S. He had some great duets too over the years on HeeHaw.
When I was growing up, Hee Haw was very popular…I loved Roy Clark because it would be a break from the ho hum skits…I knew even as a child I was watching greatness..
Love Roy Clark's talent & his humor. He made it look so easy but what he did was actually very difficult. He was able to play his instruments with a really fast tempo. Roy Clark was a great entertainer, humble man & super talented. He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary. A lot of musicians & artists today could learn a lot from his style & technique. Glen Campbell & Jerry Reed were also underrated guitarists. But these men paved the way for a lot of musicians today.
Incredible. I can't make my fingers move this fast even if I'm not trying to hit certain strings and play an actual song. And the thing is, he made it look so effortless. RIP, Roy. There will never be anyone to fill your shoes.
"The Lightning Fingers of Roy Clark" was the first I heard of Roy when my dad bought the album. In that time frame, I saw him perform in person at the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Roy's pure love of music .. the encouragement he gave to youngsters coming up. His humor and ability to smile and laugh. His eyes smiled .. his talent took him places but his personality made him a winner.
I have no doubt Roy practiced millions of hours to get to play like this, but TBH I also think he's got that "born with it" talent that just takes it to the next level(s). I really like the analysis. I'm not a guitarist so it gave me a whole new appreciation of how incredible this performance really is.
A truly one of a kind performer. If Roy was just a singer, he would have had a nice career. If he were just a guitar player, he would have been a huge star. Add in his comedy and all the other instruments (banjo, fiddle, mandolin, etc.) and he is LEGENDARY!
I had the good fortune to see Roy Clark perform live at his theater in Branson. I had seen every Hee Haw episode as that show was my Dad's favorite all time TV show. I'm a huge fan of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Page, & Jimi Hendrix. Roy was as good as any of those genius players. I would wager that Roy could have learned to play any of their songs in minutes, while they would need to practice to master his technique.
As you mentioned frame rate-- speed of right hand was literally a blur in ending runs. The display of coordination with speed was dazzling. Analysis w/guitar was needed guide.
My great-uncle was a railroad depot clerk and a multi-instrumentalist on guitar, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer (which he used to make), autoharp, squeezebox (concertina), jaw harp, harmonica and fiddle. He learnt it all playing with the family, his grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles, cousins just letting it rip for fun. I feel sure Roy probably learnt the same way when he was young. At any rate, Uncle Willard would whack you if you dared to make noise while Roy was playing anything on the TV or radio. He said that he had never heard anyone have so much music inside him just waiting to pour out. He's been gone since 1984, but every time I hear Roy Clark I can see the rapt look on Uncle Willard's face as he listened.
Many years ago I had the pleasure to hear Roy Clark in a small dinner theatre. I can’t tell you how amazing he was. I will never forget that evening. What an honor. Roy didn’t just play music he felt it, Roy was the music
Incredible entertainer, on all levels! Glen once said Roy and he had an agreement-- Glen stayed away from Malaguena if Roy stayed away from Wm. Tell Overture!
My dad and I had the best time ever at the 1964 Del Mar Fair when we saw Roy Clark, (while my mom and sister were off at the exhibits) and we just smiled from ear to ear for the rest of the day! He played guitar and banjo and clowned around and won our hearts!! 💜🎶✨

Fil, I saw Roy and his band perform in the '80s. Tremendous musician and comedian. His band was first rate as well. He didn't mind letting his band do some comedy as well. The bass player did a little funny bit too. Fun show.
You're a brave man, Fil, taking this on. You did well, considering you're trying to imitate the inimitable. Lol. The thing that made Roy so beloved is that he obviously took the music very seriously, but he didn't take himself seriously at all.
I saw Roy Clark on the Ed Sullivan show where he performed that very same song . At the end of the song he apologized to mister Sullivan telling him that he got the eleven and a half rag instead of the twelveth

Being born in the late 1970's...Roy Clark was definitely part of my Childhood...HeHaw was on every week in our house. Mr. Clark just seemed like a nice guy, and a fun guy. As I am now much older...I am just constantly amazed by what a true multi-instrumentalist he was. He wasn't just okay at guitar or just okay on violin.. like he was gifted. I can only imagine how much he practiced all of the things. Thanks for highlighting these old school musicians.
I got to see Roy at a small lounge here in Las Vegas about 12 years ago. He was such a treat and he played and sang all his hits, especially Yesterday When I Was Young. I was weeping, he was such a performer as well as a talent. He will always be missed.
Country boy's like Roy Clark Glen Campbell Chet Atkins Jerry Reed Merle Travis ect... made it look pretty easy. Those guys were humble and never arrogant. They set the bar pretty high. Once in a while you may get a person who feels kind of lofty about his playing and if you do, bring em' back to Earth with stuff like this. Thanks Fil. 👍✌❤
Thanks Fil.. great analysis, as always. I grew up watching Roy, and many of the other country greats, most of whom have now left us. Never missed watching HeeHaw, and had the joy of seeing him live several times too. A gift for sure.. but I’m quite sure there were hours and hours and hours of practice involved, in order for it to ‘appear’ effortless.
While I was growing up we had maybe five albums to our name. Hank Williams, the too fat polka, and Roy Clark. My dad played violin, accordion, harmonica, piano, guitar, and banjo. It seems if it had strings he could play it and all by ear. Even without a little finger that he lost her in World War II he still played today. This brings back a lot of memories of watching he haw while he was slowly leaving us from emphysema. They brought a lot of joy to his later years. I was 16 when he died so it’s extremely important for me to remember some of those childhood memories.
Phenomenal ✨ he's like the victor Borge of the guitar. I can't think of any other guitarist, or musician for that matter, who was more accomplished and fun to watch🤘 I wasnt much of a hee haw fan but I'd watch it just to see Roy and Buck Owens.
Good analysis of Roy Clark. Just finished watching your live stream from yesterday. Missed it due to poor connections. Loved your red lights love the color red. It’s very strong positive and strength and good luck. To bad that you didn’t keep them up. 🎃🧛♀️🎸
There are a few genuine giants in all of guitar playing......Mr Roy Clark is is the rare few who are among them. Your reverence of the greats is wonderful to watch.....as you are clearly a very accomplished guitarist this adds to my absolute enjoyment of your analysis......thank you for your wonderful work 🙏
All I can say is.. it never gets old watching Roy Clark play... And the look of amazement on your face.. as well as everybody watching probably.. is priceless..🎸🎻🪕🎶🤗
What an incredibly talented performer.....not just in musical ways...he KNEW how to play an audience...he KNEW how to entertain... Much like Glen Campbell....there won't be another like him.
What an awesome channel this is! I subscribed fairly recently, and the content is fabulous. My wife goes to bed early, and over the course of the last week I have spent the rest of the evening watching 2-3 of Fil’s videos. I have a long way to go!
Roy wasn’t the only guitar player who could play this well, but the only one who could grin and make jokes at the same time. Brave and good spirited of you to do a playing analysis of Roy. Kudos to you. Well done.
I grew up watching him and loving him on Hee Haw. I enjoyed both his comedy and his music. But it wasn't until UA-cam came along and I starting watching old clips that it hit me what an incredible musician he really was. I just took it for granted that he could do the things he did!
He seems so incredibly comfortable with the entire fretboard and his picking hand as well, that it seems like he's just teasing the audience... I think he actually has to pretend it is difficult and he's trying hard! I don't know what makes me smile more, Roy being so incredibly happy, or Fil being so incredibly happy! How can I watch this video and not be forced to be incredibly happy as well??? GLORIOUS!!!
Phil, don't waste your time, just bow , like the rest of us, and get on to some 'lesser' picker. The man was incomparable, except maybe Tommy Emmanuel. Different level than us humans.
Impossible to watch him without smiling. So much talent and such a fun, sweet man. There will never be another Roy Clark.
I was in awe and smiling the entire time!
He was a fun, sweet man.......
On stage, off stage... not so much.

Your reverence of the greats is wonderful to watch.....as you are clearly a very accomplished guitarist this adds to my absolute enjoyment of your analysis......thank you for your wonderful work 🙏
The presenter of the show, where he performed this was definitely right to call them "Lightning Fingers." What an incredible Guitarist.
Jazzmaster this time. Last time, the Jaguar. But every time, Roy Clark blows everyone away.
I used to watch him when I was real young and he made it so fun. His humor got my attention and his playing made it all even better.
Roy Clark and Glen campbell are my favorite musicians thanks Fil for showing this video of roy he was a talented person on many instruments
Watching Roy in 2023 still makes me smile -- I'm 55 and got to see a lot of these guys in my day. ❤❤❤
Roy is freakin phenomenal! Another cool analysis Fil
The great Roy Clark. A truly amazing talent, and so humble. A true musician.
Every time I watch this I’m more impressed.
Thanks!
Loved Roy, one of the best and he was even better on the banjo!
