  • I harvested this log about 5 years ago and it has been cut in 1/2 and end sealed. It has been sitting in a cubby hole in my shop for years. I have been cleaning the shop and that means turning some of this wood I have laying around.
This bowl turned out amazing. The colors and flare was cool and the spalting really add to the bowl. So check out this turning video and let me know what you think.

Just found your channel today. Finding 5 year dry bowl blanks in the shop is a great motivator for cleanup I'm thinking. Very nice bowl, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for finding me and watching. I am trying to clean up the shop a bit and move it soon. I also have log blanks, roughed out bowls, and roughed out coring sets stashed all over the house, so there are plenty more to turn. Thanks, Ian

Beautiful bowl. Just a thought on the sleeves of the sweater. Put a rubber band on each arm and they should keep the sleeves from dropping down. Lloyd

Thanks for watching and the tip. I will soon, have a space that I can heat more effective than my current garage. But for now I am playing in the cold garage.

Was wondering how you keep the red color in the box elder, after turning it. Like cedar, I believe it turns brown after exposure to UV rays.

I have no reall answer for that. I have thought about this and I know it fades over the years. I have also seen the wood turn from a nice light wood color to a YELLOW color. very different form what it was in the beginning a nice light wood grain color. I have thought about researching UV protection finishes for bowls, but haven't had a chance yet. Food safe is such a big deal, I gasp to think asking about UV protection. Thanks for watching.

I may have missed it, and this is a late comment but what was the size of that finished bowl. Lovely by the way!

It is about 11 inches acroos the top, or 11 inches in Diameter.
