Woodturning - Flaming Box Elder Pedestal Bowl
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 тра 2021
- A strange Ice storm in may, took down a huge branch from our box elder in the yard. I couldn't help but have a look inside as soon as I possibly could. This bowl was twice turned and kiln dried.

it is just LOVELY ... it's the black figuring in amongst all those lovely colours
Thanks for including the broken bowl. It's nice to get an update. That wood is so colorful. I'm looking forward to future projects with it.
A few months ago {About 400 months that is.), as a young Marine I was in Michigan acting as the Best Man at a fellow Marine's wedding when I laid eyes on the Maid of Honor and knew that I was going to be moving to Michigan. I bought some land and set to clearing some of it for a home to be built. I had never heard of this tree called Box Elder and decided the best use for it was to host NUMEROUS Beer and Bonfire Parties. Now, somewhere in my fifties I've settled down just a little bit and taken up some gentler hobbies...like woodturning. I look at this BEAUTIFUL piece and think {brokenheartedly) OH MAN I've burned tons of that! The moral of the story is turn it, don't burn it. Get yourself some Cactus Juice and save the beauty. Be safe and stay healthy kiddo!
My friend and her boyfriend split the cost of some flame box elder to share for turning. Cost them a small fortune and yours just fell off the tree for you 😆
Life is good. Full of surprises.
That's really beautiful. Wow! If anyone can find a solution to repair the broken one, you can. Can't wait to see it. Stay safe.
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for sharing ... the dance was awesome, and I hope your bottle of polish didn't break either ... ACK!!! Be safe Todd & Family.
sometimes ice storms are good. love the bowl (and all your other pieces). you are very talented

Jimmy
Todd the colors are simply amazing. They look as though they are flowing right through the piece. Reminds me of a satellite image you see on the weather channels. Brings a lot of life to it.
I was not sure we even had Box Elder here in Oregon but was recently given a large piece of it that had just been cut. Still waiting to decide what to do with it.
Hope the rest of you ended up with is as pretty as this one.
Take care,
Gary
Thank you so much Gary, it was a little tricky to make sure it finished in the bottom inside of that band of color but it was so worth it. There’s much more from that branch to play with 😊
Beautiful colors very interesting. 🤩🤩🤩
Turned out really beautiful. Nicely done.
Utterly beautiful! Good job.
Great bowl, great wood, great turning! :-)
We enjoy watching your videos! At the beginning of one of your videos.
There was a nice big metal lathe. We
wondered if you were also a machinist! We saw you reworking a breaker bar into a wood turning tool.
My son who is a master machinist said you know how to work metal!
That could point to you having a machinist background! Keep up the good work of turning out beautiful
Items. We also like to see your family appear in cameos in your videos
Looks great. Incredible colour. Nice job...
Great bowl, Todd! The punky parts really turned out well.
Killer piece. Earned a subscription for it!!
Thank you Ryan, welcome aboard!
Really nice job.
Awesome piece, like your videos. I'm waiting next one👍
Box elder gets such a bad rap but it's fun to turn and the color is gorgeous! Lucky you to have it volunteer for your lathe!
Great video 👍
Beautiful piece brother. As usual.
Peace
Buddy
Very beautiful 💜💜💜
Wowza! That's one of the prettiest bowls I have seen yet. Nice work. I am using the abrasive paste and tiny wax you use and I like it.
Thank you very much!
Gorgeous Piece Brother! I Love What You're Doing👍
Love the color 👍
Beautiful wood
Beautiful...love the grain!
Holy cow that thing is beautiful!
Dude that is awesome! Tremendous color!
Beautiful piece.
Looks like fish bonkers in the background on the table! Use them a lot in Alaska on salmon! Nice bowl!

I’ve just found your channel via this video. It looks like it will be beautiful. I can’t wait to see the entire video. I would love to learn how to do woodturning. It looks so calming and rewarding. Im a new subscriber. Thank you for sharing your craft.
Thank you so much!
Truly gorgeous, brother!
I love me some box elder!
Another beautiful piece man, thanks for sharing 😊🍻
Stunning!
Good lookin pedestal bowl Todd!!👍🏻👍🏻
The colors in that box elder bowl are just spectacular.
Frank Howarth had some interesting franken bowl repairs that might work for the first bowl. Love the colors and I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Cheers
Merry Christmas. Looks like you got a great present to play with!
Verry pretty
Fantastic
Dang, tell wife, I loved her little dance, your bowl is way cool
So beautiful, you'd think it was hand-painted!
And to think, it basically fell into your lap.
I like it!
Amazing!
Purdy timber
Nice!
Man, talk about a prize dropping in your lap. That Box Elder is beautiful. I think it looks better as a pedestal bowl than a regular bowl.
Love it.
Nice
Beautiful bowl. Box Elder seems to be more prevalent out your way. Not so much here in Pittsburgh.
As always love your approach and style. Craftsmanship is top notch, beautiful piece.
I have only had one piece of fbe and it is some very awesome wood but real soft awesome job and awesome score
Gorgeous piece, with amazing colors, you have been right to persist after the first crash. I'm eager to see the possible repair of the first bow. 👍
Just another amazing piece!!!! Love working with Box Elder, and you did an excellent job!!!! Keep it up, brother!!!
What a gorgeous piece!
Really lovely colouring! Great the 2nd piece held together!
Love the colour in this piece. Great work Todd, it's a beautiful piece
I love the profile of this piece! The cone shaped base is a real stand out for me as it looks like a separate piece with no colour through it, and it adds to the piece. I have to point out that I’ve never seen a cheerleader in a wood turning video. Love ya, Brother!
I agree. Seeing that I am living so far away (Africa) I think I am going to copy that base (sort of), unless you stop me. NICE BOWL! Kind regards.
I know I mentioned this in the shop update video, but the companion piece that broke-- turn it into a saucer. Sell this and the saucer as a pair.
Really beautiful, Todd. During the video I kept wondering if that was the second piece and then you sprung it on us. Take care.
Bill
G’day from Oz down under.
One of the nicest bowls I have 3ver seen.
Great job and the finish is fantastic.
Love the shape with the small pedestal.
I think I will definitely use that shape myself.
Thankyou thankyou for sharing this wonderful video. And where the hell di I get flaming box elder in Australia. Love it🥰🪵
Thank you 😊 I’ll trade for some rainbow eucalyptus 😉
your wifey is funny
Yes sir she is the best 🤪
a deep crack like that , maybe flood it with CA glue and activator to stabilize?
👍
That broken bowl is a good start of a yarn bowl. Just sayin’.
Canny wait to see what ya gunna do with the "busted bowl" Todd....
Beautiful coloring! I love the reds and contrasting spalting. I like the little inspirational messages around the shop, did Shannon put those up? Having a spouse that supports your passion is a beautiful thing. I can’t wait for next week already! God bless 👍
Never seen soooo pure colors, Todd 😱 (except Your last update). Just marvelous. Will You repair previous bowl?
what kind of kiln is that
awesome piece of work
Love the character in this bowl. Is all box elder like this? Great job keeping it together.
Thank you Jean, I wouldn’t say all box elder has flame coloration in it, but most has at least some.
Hey buddy love the work you do. My name is Tony and i was wandering if you turned the old freezer into a kiln and if so could you send me a link on how to do that? Thanks for your help
That is gorgeous. Will the color hold over time? I have this ugly box elder out by the street.......
👌💯🇧🇷
Had a nice size bowl and u worked it down to almost nothing
Had I worked all the way down I would have cut out all that color. I just read the wood and took it from the bottom instead.
love the bowl, still no Rikon?
Not until July 😒
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯👌👍🤝
Beautiful piece 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
What sort of wood is this please?
Thank you 😊 this is made from box elder maple
oops another 3 seconds and ...... LOL
How did you make your kiln?

That's beautiful! What's P.V.A.?
PVA stands for polyvinyl acetate, aka wood glue 😉
