    Looks like Flame Box Elder. Beautiful when finished in clear or white (clear) shellac.

    Yea, i took down a few box elders here at the house over the last few years and it seemed like the smaller ones seemed to have more red in them than the larger ones.. Beautiful wood ..

    Such cool looking wood. It would be neat if one day, we could see something built out of some of these amazing slabs by one of your buyers.

    That looks really nice Nathan. This morning I had to call in the big box store to get some lumber but for some reason the prices have gone through the roof!! I just don’t know how they justify the huge hike in prices. I wish I had the room to put a mill!! The cost of the lumber made it three times the price of just buying the item I was going to make. Nice video thank you Nathan. Graham🇬🇧🇬🇧

      Out of the Woods well Nathan, I had to go back this morning to the big box store. I was talking to the guy in the woodyard and we were discussing the price of the lumber. I was telling him what I need and he said come with me. The store was taking down all the display kitchens, he gave me first pickings and I asked how much...FREE, TAKE AS MUCH AS YOU WANT,!!! My Christmas just came early.
      Take care, Graham🇬🇧🇬🇧🌲🌲

      Where are you from? I just milled a 24" dia x 36" Box elder log with some awesome figure, it's got blue stain, redflame & lots of cats paw in it, it was the gnarliest log I've ever milled

    I can't help but wonder what causes the blade to chatter and thus give that ripple effect. In this video at 3:30 or so, you can see that the right side support for the blade spool is vibrating. Is the channel iron not strong enough and could it be reinforced? Is this the cause or is this chattering of the blade frame from the chattering of the blade....hmmmm. Love the vids, calming and fun to see what is inside. Yes, it's like Christmas everyday you cut into a log. Keep it up Nathan!

    Greetings from Vancouver Island, British Columbia
    Long time viewer. Some wonderful slabs coming out of your mill.
    Wondering if you could show us video of you operating the mill ?
    Split screen, watching you operate the controls on one side, while seeing what part that moves on the other.
    I know a lot of the sawing is automatic, but those loading arms, bark cutter, and blade guide arm, don't move
    themselves.
    Enjoy the channel, keeping wowing us with that beautiful timber

    Why is the saw bouncing causing the rippling saw cut? Feeding too fast for the blade?

    Why are you getting saw marks when you are using premium blades?

    • @oliverm5sc
      @oliverm5sc 5 років тому +1

      That's called chatter from a aggressive blade that penates the wood to easy pulling itself into the log.

    • @oliverm5sc
      @oliverm5sc 5 років тому +1

      Also after they ruin quite a few blades with those sharp pointy teeth with not much behind them they will switch back to normal blades. How many sharpening can you get out of those pointy teeth blades, seems like the tooth will go down fast. Just more hype as they're new

    Im an operator of many types of heavy equipment loaders, and there is no way you will not prevent damage to the mill if you can’t see what you are doing, why don’t you put a swing up door so you can see?

    When I was in Thailand there is a tree that really looks like it bleeds, Burmese Padauk (pterocarpus macrocarpus). There is a red sap that comes out of the tree when its cut, really looks like blood and stains the wood (and clothes). dokmaidogma.files.wordpress.com/2016/08/sap-72.jpg?w=584 is an example.

    Have you or do you saw much Locust? I'm just curious because I think it's a very pretty wood but it seems like it'd be hard to saw.

    Not sure what you would use box elder for. Around here it is not even used for firewood as it stinks when it is burned. Stinks even when it is cut. Most gets cut as a weed tree and is left to rot. Don't think you could give it away even as slabs. It is soft and spongy so no good for cabinet work. Sure does suck up water in wet areas though.

    • @wf2v
      @wf2v 5 років тому

      I dont notice it stink when burning in a woodstove. As long as it is dry, it burns fine. It does stink when you cut it though!

    Starting to get annoyed by jump cuts,. Why make a 6min video where you don't speak about the initial cut down to fit the mill or the 180* flip? I know this is minor to anyone who "Knows" but it does make the story more interesting.
