I’ve been gluten free since the 80’s. I simply went without because there were no gluten free foods at all. 90’s diagnosed celiac by a blood test, because back then, you were celiac or not, no gluten intolerance existed. 2000’s I developed egg and tree nut allergy, tomato intolerance. When I want a gf product, it can’t have any of those ingredients, which leaves me with hardly anything to eat in the way of processed foods. Schar is the only company that make gf products that I can eat. I study ingredients like an investigator, I check each product online while I’m shopping to see if the gf are made in dedicated facilities.

My mother ( not a good mother) didn’t believe me, she stopped making me lunches for school, because I wouldn’t eat them. My mother took me to our family doctor, who referred me to the hospital where I had tests done, the docs saw what they described as “ rocks in my intestines”. In front of me, the doc asks my mother “ do you know what’s causing this?” My mother said no, I said as a 4 yo, “ the bread does this to me”, the doctor laughed at me and said “ don’t be silly, bread can’t do this to you”. I was on a diet of laxatives and prunes every day, for decades, I hated it. I continued not eating anything like bread. It wasn’t until the 1990’s that I heard the word gluten, from another doctor who I had to see after eating a slice of regular pizza. She felt my gut where my intestines are, and said the same thing as the doc in the 70’s, “you have rocks in your intestines”. She asked me if this happened a lot, I replied “yes, all my life” she asked if she could run a blood test. She did, she contacted me 4 days later, to come in. She told me I have celiac. I had never heard that word before, I had never heard of the word gluten mentioned either. She had all the paperwork about celiac disease. Back then, you only had celiac, there was no gluten intolerance, or non celiac gluten intolerance, just celiac. There wasn’t antibody testing either. The doc told me I was lacking a lot of nutrients. I’m having a celiac blood test done at the end of the month, I’m back on gluten for 4-6 weeks and it’s terrible.
I'm sorry you went through all that. I kept getting sick till I stopped eating bread and wheat products. Nobody told me about this. I figured it out over time, noticing when I'd get sick and when I didn't. I wish I too would have learned sooner.
I was diagnosed with Ceiiacs disease and went off glutin and was OK. Gained my weight back, was feeling fine a long time. Then since I was eating that stuff with no problems, I though this isn't as serious as I once believed. I started having an occasional cheeseburger, Subway or pasta, etc. and there was no problem...for months. Then all of a sudden, POW! I've got rashes galore, and stomach issues like crazy. Now I'm off all Glutin products except what I'm now learning by going online do have it in them like Soy Sauce. Man this time it is really kicking my booty! I'm going back to my Doctor but I guess I really do have to eat nothing but Glutin free. I read some labels of a can of soup I just ate...yep, contains wheat. Dang man! Great site Robyn! Thanks.
It because your leaky gut healed when you went off gluten. Gluten causes leaky gut. When you started eating it again it took a little bit of time for your gut to get leaky again, and for your body to again start producing antibodies against the gluten. That's when your symptoms started again.
In Norway, you can eat food labeled “may contain”, cause all products that contain more than 20 ppm have to be labeled with gluten. “May contain” products are celiac safe 😍 (but not extreme allergy safe ofc)

I looked a long time for this information and finally found someone who could simply tell us and got the information from an approved organization. thank you , truly, thank you! I've been so frustrated about the confusing 'comments about gluten or not products. I ended up finding out that my vitamin chews had rice syrup, which may or not have barley in it, though it was considered "gluten free", my probiotic had whey in it (!) with not only a gluten issue, but a severe dairy issue, that was given to me by my insurance company!!! Wow. Anyway, you saved me time, pain, and confusion, even more due to a FB group made it clear that information confusion is truly rapid. (And I mean it that way.). It's almost all too much in some of the groups with the bullying going on. I can't thank you enough for your sanity that you're giving us. I hope you continue on!

Flax seeds are not meant to be consumed. Flaxseed oil companies have been without revenue since paint thinners went synthetic. So an aggressive marketing campaign tries to hoodwink us to eat the seeds and drink the oil. Ironically flax is worst for menopausal women, whom it's most marketed to.
OMG yes, in canada when I started asking about gluten free cosmetics, I was laughed at by a sales lady who said "as if gluten in a shampoo would get into your stomach, what are you gonna do, eat it?" then i said "no, but if you had a deathly allergy to seafood would you use lipstick with added seafood?" (she didn't get it)
What a great video.This was my first video for your channel. (I subscribed!) yeah. I am to be tested for Celiac or Gluten intolerance soon, or wheat allergy. I quit eating gluten and have not had any more digestive issues so there is definitely something there. Just need that biopsy for proof to move forward but already have learned they all require gluten free ingredients anyway.. Your video explained the ingredients/ labeling so very well. Shopping for gluten free has been a challenge and wish the US would implement better labeling. it is also expensive to buy some of the "gluten free" products. And just to add: I also got diagnosed with Diabetes, and high cholesterol so I definitely have challenges to meet in my diet. Plus, I am anosmic (no smell nor taste) and in this case is a plus because I can tell from the texture, the gluten free breads are not normal! Again---Great video and thank you so much! Thank you SO MUCH foe this information. My daughter does not have celiac but has EOE Eosinophilic esophagitis, which means No Gluten, Soy, Nuts, Diary, Eggs and Shellfish. I didn't know about the GF label and have been giving her oatmilk that is NOT gluten free. Thanks to your video I have been Educated on WHAT to look out for! I have also read that Amarnath flour is gluten free in addition to sorghum and corn fyi.

The only way I can communiate about celiac at a restauraunt is to say I have a grave allergy for any additives, and can only eat freshly harvested fruits and vegetables that have not touched anything. HAHA now you know why i NEVER eat at restaurants anymore.

Here in the UK food will be labelled ' Gluten Free' but often there will be an additional warning stating that the product may have been processed in a factory that produces products containing gluten. Woah, this can be so confusing. Thank you for clearing up so many points here 🙂
When I was 64 no problems, my old man was the same, my sister and brother. seems its family related. Well I'm sure we all know it is. It's a matter of time it catches up with you. Most time you don't know the problem but always look at this could save you a lot of pain.

My Dr said you still need to read the label because some companies hide it in the ingredients list as something else ever thought the package says gluten free on it
American celiac here. General Mills Cereals that are labeled Gluten Free, even Certified Celiac, I still avoid. I have been glutened after eating 2 of 4 boxes of Cheerios. I stopped eating these cereals at least 4 years ago so things may have changed with regulations (but probably not). I stick to cereal brands whose products are all GF.
While watching this video. I was eating ‘Clancy’ brand Kettle Chips Jalapeño flavor. I read the ingredients, the label stated ‘Gluten Free’ but the ingredients read Yeast Extract, Dextrose,Whey. Of course I got confused. I’m new at this trying to go gluten free. But I certainly appreciate your video😊

66 it's just happened, found out through drinking 12 pints of British bitter. only joking but I have done in the passed. Try to behave myself lately but I'm happy with oats. I have generally got worse through the years. I brew my own whiskey using flavorings this is fine. I use sugar then flavour from Australia they also seem fine but they must be me
Modified food starch can be wheat. I think you may have forgotten that one. Also, as iam allergic to wheat and celiac, if something is listed wheat free it is not safe unless it's listed gluten free as well. I live in the US so I think labels here could improve alot t t
Just found out that up to 25 percent of supplements can contain gluten… does the “gluten free” statement on the bottle a safe reliability because the statements are not regulated by the FDA? Have you done a video on this ?
I'm 65 years old and was just diagnosed with Celiac Disease. It's all so overwhelming and I'm having a hard time with it. The foods I love, I can't have. Gluten free food is awful!
It’s easy I’ve been gluten free so long I can’t tell the difference salmon plain chicken vegetables fruits potatoes sweet potato lots of good food the pastas not as good as normal pasta but there are lots of great gluten free pasta because everyone different you just gotta try them all find what one you like there’s biscuits cakes nuts are gluten free you can buy gluten free cakes online from proper shops which you never ever tell the difference because it’s impossible to lots of other good food
Great video! I wish your channel had existed when I was first diagnosed with celiac. I disagree with your thesis that anything labeled Gluten Free is just as safe as Certified Gluten Free. The Gluten Free label is on the honor system in the US. Certified indicates a third party have reviewed their practices, sources of ingredients, etc. I do still eat many products that aren’t certified, but sometimes someone uneducated puts a trendy label on a can, which makes some “gluten free” products unsafe. I’ve learned to be wary of specific brands.

Thanks so much for watching and for your comment! 🤩🙏 My goal with my information-based videos is to give the facts presented from official sources (such as the Celiac Disease Foundation & Canadian Celiac Association). I do agree that it's great that products that are certified gluten-free have to be tested. Still, on rare occasions, there have been recalls on items that were certified gluten-free (as well as those just marked gluten-free). The overall point is that "gluten-free" is a legally binding statement. If anyone has a reaction, it must be reported-as any 'gluten-free' products are required to be 'less than 20ppm'. All this said, I know many people who prefer to just buy certified gluten-free products, and that's totally fine-whatever makes you most comfortable. 😄

You can find gluten free soy sauce, but yes, the cheap soy sauce usually has wheat as a filler.

Quest bars are certified gluten free and come with a warning saying processed in a facility that processes wheat.

Please don't get confused. There are different types of gluten, but they are NOT the gluten in BROW that the UA-camr is talking about.
Rice, quinoa and corn are completely GLUTEN FREE.

66 it's just happened, found out through drinking 12 pints of British bitter. only joking but I have done in the passed. Try to behave myself lately but I'm happy with oats. I have generally got worse through the years. I brew my own whiskey using flavorings this is fine. I use sugar then flavour from Australia they also seem fine but they must be me

Are nuts a high risk food for cross contamination? I’m in the US and always wondered if I’ll get a reaction from nuts that don’t say gluten free.
Nuts are not considered high risk! As long as there’s no “May Contain” you should be good. 😊

Modified food starch can be wheat. I think you may have forgotten that one.
Also, as iam allergic to wheat and celiac, if something is listed wheat free it is not safe unless it's listed gluten free as well. I live in the US so I think labels here could improve alot t t

I'm 65 years old and was just diagnosed with Celiac Disease. It's all so overwhelming and I'm having a hard time with it. The foods I love, I can't have. Gluten free food is awful!
It’s easy I’ve been gluten free so long I can’t tell the difference salmon plain chicken vegetables fruits potatoes sweet potato lots of good food the pastas not as good as normal pasta but there are lots of great gluten free pasta because everyone different you just gotta try them all find what one you like there’s biscuits cakes nuts are gluten free you can buy gluten free cakes online from proper shops which you never ever tell the difference because it’s impossible to lots of other good food

I disagree with your thesis that anything labeled Gluten Free is just as safe as Certified Gluten Free. The Gluten Free label is on the honor system in the US. Certified indicates a third party have reviewed their practices, sources of ingredients, etc. I do still eat many products that aren’t certified, but sometimes someone uneducated puts a trendy label on a can, which makes some “gluten free” products unsafe. I’ve learned to be wary of specific brands.

My goal with my information-based videos is to give the facts presented from official sources (such as the Celiac Disease Foundation & Canadian Celiac Association). I do agree that it's great that products that are certified gluten-free have to be tested. Still, on rare occasions, there have been recalls on items that were certified gluten-free (as well as those just marked gluten-free).
The overall point is that "gluten-free" is a legally binding statement. If anyone has a reaction, it must be reported-as any 'gluten-free' products are required to be 'less than 20ppm'.
All this said, I know many people who prefer to just buy certified gluten-free products, and that's totally fine-whatever makes you most comfortable. 😄
