I really enjoyed this video. I'm a karate man, (Okinawan), and many of these "old style" training methods that you demonstrate are common to us as well. I admire your devotion to your art and I'm impressed with anyone who can crack a coconut with their bare hand. I've recently taken an interest in iron palm conditioning with the bags and jow. I've spent a lot of time punching a makiwara, but I've never conditioned my hands in any other way. Please continue to post these great videos.

    Hello
I do iron palm mung beans. So heard from this kung fu instructor that he trains in only iron palm mung beans. He says that doing gravel or steel shots can cause injury and is unncessary . For external iron body do you recommend just stay on mung bean canvas bag stick ? or advance to gravel and then steel shots?

Yes, the makiwara is a formidable opponent, but a very useful tool of used properly. Is there any certain type of jow that you would recommend? I've found in my research that a type called Chan Ning Tong is a good jow. Is there a different type of jow that would be used for say arm or leg conditioning, or is a jow just a jow?

@duchampscomb Yah always been interested in learning the actual art. It didnt take long to see the tricks involved in the general breaking we see today in most martial arts (in this case the Shotokan school I was in). I felt like a faker knowing the spacers were doing most of the work. Prob is in my area theres no specialists in this area. Any good reading you guys would suggest for basic intro training in Iron Palm?

I commend your skills. VERY, very impressive. Job well done to both of you.
You both have a good grasp on meditation, chi kung, conditioning, application, and breaking.
In the grand scheme of things, mastering something like iron palm paves the way for you to master your forms and fighting, and ultimately to master your own life.
Excellent job! Keep up the good work!
I hope you are teaching and passing on what you have learned.

As a karate man, I can respect and appreciate this type of training. Especially the Bloodsport reference :)
Don't know if you're familiar with a UA-camr named garrylever06, but he is a Goju-Ryu karate stylist. Many of his conditioning exercises mirrored yours, such as the palm and forearm training, and the hand grip w/the jar. It's funny how so much of karate has been adapted by the Chinese arts, yet we have the eternal karate vs. kung fu debate. Each art has something to offer IMHO.

  • @asianbuffalo

I have a question: So to acquire iron palm, you'll just keep training regularly with hard objects like bag of steels, till you attain extraordinary breaking skill, or does it have sth to do with "Ki" energy as well, which some people say helps you break the brick? I personally dont believe in the Ki thing, but I could be wrong.
Btw, can I train with other hard material than steel bag? How about hitting against trees or boulder? is it less effective than traing with steel? Thanks!

Do you guys do Wing Lam's Iron skills training program he has?
I'm mostly concerned about arthritis when I get old.. even when you train properly, will conditioning the fingers give you arthritis when you're old?
Also, do you need to work your way up to the steel shot before you can break bricks? Or can you right after 3 months of mung beans?
3rd - Is there a Qigong program too? E.g. See Ku Yu Cheung, 90 pounds breaking 16 bricks. Is it all external conditioning or is there more?
    Thanks :)

On the roller bar, your elbow moves up , which will cause the pipe to roll down the forearm. This is specific to develop punching power and toughness of the inner forearm. It looked like you were raising and lowering your forearm on a fulcrum, and not moving the elbow up or flat.

Your Kung Fu is real good brother, very nice video. Just one question: Do you use separators in between the cinder blocks? I know at my school that I used to attend they used popsicle sticks to space out the blocks, I never asked my Sifu what they were for. I assume they were to space out the blocks so you're hitting a bunch of individual blocks with the blow and not one giant block made up from 5-7 blocks.
