One time I posted on this guy’s video that I’m going to go “off road” in my stock Sienna. He not only encouraged me, he sent me a video of him doing it with a Sienna. Legend.
Don’t let people tell you what vehicle you need, just go and explore and bring a manual winch with you. I have taken a Toyota Camry to places people won’t believe.
Good to see someone is using it as intended to be. Overlanding is become the glorified and adult import scene or us folks that grew up during the Fast and Furious era and now have families.
In general you're better off putting a tire on an obstacle (rock, ledge, tree stump, etc) than trying to straddle or sneak by it. You're more likely to hit that low hanging differential skid plate (as you mentioned) straddling it or cut a sidewall on a tire trying sneak by it. Re clangs and bangs, Jeep mentions that those sounds are normal right in the manual. I'm not an overlander. I like off roading more than camping and would rather sleep in my own bed or a hotel room than in a tent. A suspension lift is a handy thing to have to support all the added weight of the rock sliders, skid plates, winch, and bumper.
AMAZING content, what we noobs really need. Bought sliders but don't know how to use them 😅 Didn't realize your approaches are the way. More real world examples would be sweet, searched "how to use rock sliders" and almost nothing...a video showing how you choose your lines would be appreciated 👏 Keep up the educational content, us noobs can learn on screen and apply while on the trail and hope we don't mess anything up during the learning process. Appreciate you!!
@gx.plorer 🙇♂️ ❤️ think of your Toyota as 2 dirt-bikes on either side (driver & passenger)... keyboarders will prattle about lifting and straddling obstacles... in actuality you are _climbing_ obstacles on either the left or right side "dirt bikes" ... generally speaking: ua-cam.com/video/98vTfazSa7Y/v-deo.html
You mean you don't want 52" tires on 8 lug portal axles?! Another great video showcasing real world capabilities, with some good old fashioned English definitions sprinkled in, like bumper.
@caligsi oh the best is when they have all 25 auxiliary lights on during the _daytime_ while on the trail... then find a rock.. put a tire on, take a picture, unfold tent, film themselves making a pot of coffee, then turn around and go back to the rat-race 🐀
I'm ok with glamping, I mean it's comfortable and easy. Sometimes you just want to be immersed in nature and not hit the hard trails. However, if glamping is all you know, you don't have the background to comment on hard trails.
@ThomasKoerber-j4u hello we cannot recommend this brand, they look "kewl" but the quality and fit was subpar and there were issues... get any brand of slider you like... they all work the same ✌️
My Jeep will get that muddy, but then my NCO stripes come out of retirement and I need to clean the frame 🤣 I also live in Illinois and the salt we use this time of year will rust it out in a few winters if I don't clean out the frame regularly.

I appreciate so much about the GX. I have no interest in ever doing trails or offroading like is shown in this video, but I am reassured that the vehicle can handle it. I just wanted a vehicle that could get out of any difficult situation when a totally normal person might encounter adverse situations. Pretty much all I don't like is the gas mileage, and it would be cool if it had 400 horsepower (wish toyota had installed the d4s system on the GX's 1ur like it was on the GS and LS). But! I can live with the mpg because this is a fine truck.
@deanrotering879 I do believe the "A-word" was not used in this video? ... but don't worry some future "A-word" videos are coming... and we will pronounce it with a _"hard A"_ too
Rock sliders and skid plates are more important than a suspension lift. Some people hate it when I tell them that. I'm guessing the same people who get angered by that statement aren't gonna like this video either.
Love the "pin striping." One of my 4yo cavemen made some "cave art" on the side of our GX when it was brand new. I was tempted to pay $$$ to get it touched up, but it's like nope, it's a truck, and now it's been baptised. Like my dad did when I put a dent in his lovely sports car, I just took a deep breath and told him "it's just a car." What sliders are those? (Apologies if you called it out in vid, didn't catch it.) I like those a lot more than the pipe-sytle.
But! 🤷🏼♂️ But!🤷🏼♂️ But!🤷🏼♂️ What's the point of this vehicular behavior? 🙄 This is what hiking boots and mountain bicycles are built for, which will assist in keeping one's backside small.
I'll admit it. I own the same vehicle but I'm not as extreme as you. I do take it off road in your area a couple times a year though. Been to Mojave, frequent wheeling near 29 Palms and some trips up to the Sierra Nevadas in central California.
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD : It's worse than that. Keyboard off-roaders hear the noise on UA-cam, never experienced A-TRAC themselves, and then type away to criticize A-TRAC. How many people online criticized A-TRAC when they didn't even own a Toyota/Lexus?
I understand, that some people even prefer there to be obstacles to be overcome. I admire that, and I respect the stance. It is your car and you should do whatever you like to it. In my case, I do overlanding (not a rock crawling to overcome rocks on purpose) so if I stumble upon a stone such as 0:30, I simply depart my vehicle and move it to the side. If it is too large, I have mechanical tools for the job. I understand, that my GX might beat it, but someone else might not be able to do so. Roads are for getting to and from places. If you can "fix" them, you are free to do so. not all the people who go out in nature rock Humvees. Again, I understand, that in some parts of the world, roads are deemed as challenges and people do want obstacles on them. Then of course my logic does not apply.
Seems pretty selfish to destroy a trail obstacles because they are inconvenient for you (that's where stones at 0:30 tend to exist). Why don't you just 'overland' on paved roads and groomed/grooved trails?
@@oni-one574 Hi mate! again, to reiterate, I am not talking about "trails" as you say. I don't know where you live, but in my country, rural roads are used by people to get from point A to point B. Depending on location, you might find a fallen log, rock, or even a full dead tree in the middle of them, because the local government has no means to maintain communications properly. I don't know how to express it more clearly, but the selfish or even lazy thing in my case, is to leave the obstacle without cleaning the road. I mentioned that it will help individuals who go in nature with less capable vehicles, but to be fair, it is helping locals who gather firewood, harvest crops, or hunt (for actual food) much more as 99.9% of the time, these roads are used by them. So I would rather make the road more passable for 1000 locals and deprive the excitement of unexpected rock to some bloke with 4Runner TRD Off Road who might not even visit the place. Places that are nicer to visit are places that are rarely disturbed by locals, hence it correlates with poorer quality roads. From my point of view, I visit them because they are untouched, unique, beautiful, and far away from civilizations, not because the roads to access them are crappy.
@JavierCR25 the thing already came stock "mildly lifted"... it's a Landcruiser Prado not a Lotus Elise 😆 it's very common to see lifted vehicles _not_ on the sketchy trails due to their botched articulation unintended consequences 😉 ✌️
I own a 19 GX that is mildly built with an inch and a half Dobinsons lift with 265 70 17 tires and sliders. I'm usually on USFS roads or BLM roads when I venture off road. I also tow a 17 ft Casita RV trailer occasionally which is another reason for the heavier springs. My main reason for off roading is exploring and being in nature. You could call me one of these "Glampers" I guess. If my main reason was rock crawling I'd get something other than a GX. I enjoy your videos but lately it seems you've been harping on how other people spend their money. I do see people with overbuilt rigs that never see a dirt road but who cares? If that's how they want to spend their money and get enjoyment from who am I to say otherwise? I've owned several older Landcruisers and my favorite was a 95 FZJ80 that was factory triple locked. That was a much better off road truck than my GX. But it was awful towing my trailer. I also own a 98 Tacoma TRD Offroad. It has many "battle scars" from off road use. You are unique in that you bought a 60 or 70k dollar truck to use the way you do. Most people cant do that or would want to spend that kind of money on a vehicle and use it the way you feel it should be used that also has to do normal duties and are concerned with resale value.
@corralescruiser8957 is this video about how others spend their money or about rock sliders? Are the overglaming topic videos about how others spend their money or are they about what's truly necessary to overland?
