      Same. I noticed hardware acceleration messes everything up years ago, but overtime you tend to forget to shut it off after clean installing your pc and whatnot. Glad I found the answer to why it messes everything up. I have a tv as one of my monitors that runs in 60hz and my other to monitors run in 144hz so that explains it.

    I’d be careful doing this, depending on your CPU this could make things worse as this adds a significant load to your CPU to play video as it does it without any decoding help from the gpu

      I can't imagine working with just one monitor, and thing its also so dirt cheap. You don't need a expensive monitor as a second screen

  • @storage9578
    @storage9578 Рік тому +24

    Since there are still people commenting here's a solution:
    You don't have to match 1:1, you only need to make sure main monitor hz is divisible by side monitor hz clean.
    I.E. New monitors at 240hz works with 60hz since 4*60hz=240hz so the gpu can update them together. If you have something like 144hz or 165hz + 60hz they will always be on different cycles and that seems to be the issue. Some games will stutter immensely unless you use bandaid solution and set your 165hz monitor down to 120hz so it matches with the old 60hz monitor. Then it runs perfectly fine. Weirdly this is not a universal issue and occurs only with some games. I personally tested this with the surge 2.

    • @DarkenedCyrus
      @DarkenedCyrus  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for the input. I also tested halving the frame rate between 120 and 60 and still noticed stuttering specifically with OBS and any windowed borderless game. Might be a special case for me, but it didn’t work well when I was troubleshooting before this video came oht

    • @storage9578
      @storage9578 Рік тому

      @@DarkenedCyrus I should have communicated it better. You are right. The situation i tried to describe is another problem where its way worse, surge 2 was completely unplayable stuttering like it ran on 10fps until i reduced main monitor to 120hz to match 60hz side screen at which point it ran normal.(This was even without something on side screen) Its the only case i had where it made a massive difference but i found it worth mentioning in case anybody else encounters same problem and doesn't consider this.
      Btw this is an old issue. Hardware acceleration + mismatched monitor refresh rates was a discussion topic on win7 already with 144hz. Quick search here shows 6 year old video "144Hz 60Hz multi-monitor bug in Chrome".

      I want to point out hardware accelerated event scheduling also effects this, you can run hardware acceleration on your browser and discord with that disabled.
      hardware acceleration basically uses more of your GPU for running the programs vs more of your CPU. HA off = more CPU load vs HA on = more GPU load. It's really going to depend on what you need when and where.
      However, back on the scheduler note if you use DLSS 3 in games (not 2 but 3) it requires the scheduler to be enabled.

Another thing I gained by doing that was getting rid of some crazy game window scaling, even tho I use native resolution and exclusive fullscreen mode. With my second monitor off, that got away too. Maybe it's something to do with my 3440x1440 ultrawide resolution since not every single game supports it.

    While the fix works, it's NOT because of what you think. Video encode/decode on all major brand gous run off the encoding/decoding silicon, NOT the rendering pipeline used for gaming. The reason stutters can occur is because A. Your PC isnt built correctly IE fast gpu with slow cpu or slow gpu with fast cpu. Building a PC is a balancing act. And B. Windows issues mixed with poor app coding issues causes apps to fight each other, hence turning off said setting in discord and chrome.
    My 7800x3d and 7900xtx has no issue with my multi-monitor setup. 175hz oled main and 60hz ips secondary. Didnt change discord settings, didn't change chrome settings. No stutters. Side note, I do use madvr with mpc-hc which DOES use gpu shaders to render video instead of using the basic video processing silicon, so that for me CAN cause issues.

    If you have a decent video card with a dedicated video decoder and a low-mid end CPU, you might be better off leaving hardware acceleration on! When you turn it off, all of that gets offloaded to your CPU and you'll end up bottlenecking there.
    So keep that in mind too.

Run them in windowed fullscreen as it still counts as a window and shouldn't impact refresh rate issues. Make sure to disable hardware acceleration on the items you plan to use on the second monitor and turn off your preview window for your streaming software.

    G'day from Australia.
    Just stumbled across this video by accident, and thought it'd fix my stuttering issue while gaming. I use FireFox, and turned off Hardware Acceleration as you suggested, and UFO Test Refresh Rate shows it actually worse when I run something like a UA-cam video on my other monitor. Going to turn it back on and see what happens.
    My Monitors are a Phantom Gaming 165Hz 1440P 32" and a Phillips 75Hz 1080P 27".
    I've subbed to your channel, and looking forward to checking out some more of your videos.

    When it comes to using a secondary display alongside a laptop, can you set the main laptop to use the main GPU and have the onboard Intel GPU handle the secondary monitor? If so how do you set that up?

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz Рік тому

      If there are crossbar ICs which select the source for each output, you can configure them from BIOS set up. The crossbars are configured once by the POST process during boot, and from then on the displays are connected where they are.
      Most laptops do not have crossbar ICs and are hard configured using internal solder jumpers. The built-in display in these is always connected to the main processor's iGPU. The external output is generally connected exclusively to the dedicated GPU if the GPU chip is installed. In variants of the same laptop without dedicated GPU, it's rewired to the iGPU.
      Beware of logic paths. If you have a browser on external display (connected to dGPU) which uses GPU acceleration, it will perform rendering on the iGPU since the dGPU is not selected for the browser process and then capture and bus copy the result over to the dGPU, which is as silly as it sounds. But if the dGPU is displaying only a game anyway, don't worry.
      Laptops and heterogeneous GPU systems in general are a special kind of hell.

    Hello, i play on triple screen simracing ( 3 identical 240hz monitors ) plugged in displayport and use a fourth screen ( in reality a 60hz hd tv ) plugged in hdmi. The 4 screens are pluged into my rtx3090. I use the fourth screen to monitor obs and read the chat. As soon as i start a live i have this kind of fps loss. Sometimes they are real..i know the games i play are a lot demanding for my gpu..i can see the drop on the steam fps counter but sometimes fps are high and i have this feeling of fps drop. I changed my cpu because he seemed overloaded but now the new one is half utilized and i still have this kind of fps drop ( some call this stutter or microstutter ). So i did the modifications you said and i thank you for that. I did a test with UFO..Strange thing is that he always tells me potential browser stutter occurs while all my apps are closed, only UFO is opened in chrome. Other strange thing is that if i move the UFO window opened in chrome to my 60hz tv monitor..he still indicates 240hz..I hope the modifications will stop the stutters..Thanks again

    • @dylsensei
      @dylsensei 4 місяці тому

      Also something to keep in mind, is that to get the steam fps counter, you have to activate the steam overlay, and any overlay, even the nvidia game capture shit, will cause fps problems. I noticed a difference when I disabled steam overlay. I can’t check fps now, but there is a performance boost when its not on.
