This had been a real challenge for me until I learned to straighten out my wrist, pull my thumb back a bit toward the nut, which then helped me turn my left hand to be more parallel with the neck of the violin. That really helps the fingers "fall" into place as your video demonstrates- without that foundation, your fingers are reaching and hoping for the best.
Yea, lately I've been angling my thumb towards the nut a little more which has helped the 3rd & 4th finger, but I seem to position it differently for each string sometimes, which makes it hard to get some kind of consistency. 'Fingers fall into place' - oh how I wish that was the case. :)
could be a number of reasons. You are bowing too close to the bridge because you are now concentrating on your fingers now, or there is too much rosin, or you are hitting other strings.
Does the second finger touch the first finger? Whenever I use a tuner, I find that my first and second finger need to be slightly separated, even when the note is not a sharp. I have regular fingers, they aren't particularly thin. Is there something wrong with my strings?
The 2nd touches the 1st when it needs too - for example, on the G string, the 2nd finger would give you a Bb. On the D string, the 2nd finger next to the 1st would give you F natural. On the A, the 2nd would be C natural and on the E, it would be a G natural.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor yes I know, but when I'm using a tuner, I find my first and second finger are not perfectly touching, even when it's supposed to, it's slightly separated even though my fingers aren't too thin. Is there something wrong with my strings?
Ms. Sparrow could you possibly make suggestions for student quality strings as well as how often one should replace the strings. Often I get a scratchy tone even with excellent bowing. It could be my violin but you mentioned in your violin review about certain strings improving tone. By the I have learned to improvise on the piano; I asked a question about that ages ago but I doubt you remember. Again I appreciate your videos they really have brought me from the ground up to earning the solo in
Im going to be offering them very soon - but they will be paid im afraid as they will be outside of my normal teaching hours. Details will be coming soon....
Totally off topic but could you perhaps make a video about good quality student strings. I saw in a previous video about how a student replaced their stings and it improved the tone. I have a luither made violin and I have decent bowing technique but I still get a scratchy tone. I have seen your bowing video but do you reckon strings may have to do it as well. Oh and how often should the strings be changed is there a specific period of time or just until it snaps.

Alright, so is it possible to trade in bows?
All this time I thought the second finger was for driving. You know, like when someone cuts in front of you!
wow ... (Y) for this video. It help me a lot more knowledge about violin string ... well I'm just beginner violinist or soon to be ... lolz !
That is what is frustrating. The average finger is 10mm in width. If you're more than 1mm off,it won't sound right.
